Note 2 Powermat Wireless Charging mod - Galaxy Note II Original Android Development

Hi peeps.....after the success of my Origami Wireless Charging mod for Note 2 : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1986016 which was based on Ryan_G's original Palm Touchstone Mod, I was quite unhappy because I was limited to Bumper and very thin cases due to the limitation of the Palm Touchstone. This is why I looked for other cheaper alternatives... and here comes Powermat to the rescue.....
Both Palm and Powermat wireless chargers pump out 5V and 1amp, but the main advantage of the Powermat is it allows a little bit of a gap/space between the wireless charger and the wireless receiver... or in other words, you can use a normal thickness case with your phone while charging.....
I used the following:
1. Powermat receiver for Blackberry Pearl 8110/8120/8130
2. Powermat Wireless charging dock
3. Flexible PCB - copper clad laminate (pyralux)
4. Soldering iron
5. Kapton tape
Items 3 and 5 are optional... I'm sure you can use copper wire or copper foil tape, and electrical tape. I already have those items so I just utilized them.
My UNscientific measurement for charging rate 14% per hour
Technique is again a bit or origami and a bit of soldering.....

- please forgive the crappy video quality..
You can see sometimes, it looks like the charging does not work, but it was because I was not aligning the phone to the charging mat properly. I was looking through the video cam while putting the phone into the mat...
Happy modding guys and gals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see, so item #3 is just straight copper and you origami/solder as necessary and then cover with the kapton tape? Can you get that stuff much smaller, say like micro usb pin width small? -Off to Radio Shack (for my sd card mod) thanks!

hi nm8, i have followed your instruction on the first post,
i'm using blackberry 8900 powermat receiver instead of 8100's, and i cannot fit down the flip cover,
did you sand down the bulge on the back cover, or maybe the 8100 receiver is smaller than 8900's?
Thanks.

no I never sanded anything, I think the one I used is the thinnest we can get, that is why I have used it. Also be carefull with what you use, as different receivers have different output voltages. I did some reading last night trying to find other alternatives and some of the blackberry versions I have read will output 18v... our phone only needs 5v...

I found 8900 receiver case for $2.50 in thrift store, and the output is 5v. Before I buy powermat charger, i would like to know if you found out charging percentage per hour? Which one is better, using powermat or touchstone? Thanks.

If I were to use 8100 receiver and instead of going for Powermat charger, will the device after mod work with touchstone charger? I mean combo of the mod which goes into battery door is of 8100 receiver instead of Palm Pre Touchstone back cove receiver and Palm touchstone dock with wall charger instead of Powermat charger.
As I already have touchstone dock with charger...would like to use that.
Thanks.

Wireless charging

Hey guys figured I would pop in and show you my wireless charging system for the EVO. I did this before with the 3D but now with combination of nfc, tanker and higher quality audio through bluetooth I hope to achieve what I wanted to do with the 3D. Get in the car, set the phone down, it starts to charge and hooks up to my stereo and starts pandora.
Anyways this is the same old wireless charging system out of the palm pre from back in the day just thought I would try it in a tpu case. This one is somewhat transparent and I will more than likely change to a different case at some point but I had this.
Edit: add video link

Edit : link to touchstone charging kit: http://www.amazon.com/Palm-Touchstone-Kit-Pre/dp/B002CMEIWU
Added: Car docking with NFC
I would like to be able to get in the car set my phone down and then have it pair with the stereo for audio and phone calls. As well as charge no wires allowed lol so I think this should do it I have to play some more with NFC and maybe tasker.

The PALM Touchstone charging kit. You need the base and the phone shell. The 4 magnets and the copper doughnut looking thing need to go in your new phone. Either rig up a micro usb connector or you have to solder the 2 leads to your mainboard in the phone.
What did you use to etch the case so that the wireloop and board would fit flush?
That's pretty awesome. You could clean that up a little and name your price and probably quit your job!
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Cool, nice work!
]Yes it is the palm touchstone and back case which you can find pretty cheap. Ill find a link and put it in the OP
Powermat did cases like this in the past for other phones but the problem is there always has to be a bulge where the plug is for mass production you cant modify the standard micro usb cable to give it the nice flush look like I did. You can see in the picture that it doesn't stick out past the case at all. When i did this last time on my evo3d i used an otterbox commuter case which is opaque and has a rubber cover for the usb port so you could not even tell that the wireless charging system was even there
I used a dremel tool to remove the material from the case to get everything to sit nice and flush

Updated OP with info about the NFC car dock with wireless charging that I am making.
How fast does this method charge?
Ahh that depends in order to get the htc phones to charge at the "AC" rate you need to short the d+ and d- pins together in either the cable or the charger. Or you need to have something like the "force AC toggle widget for root".... although you need a kernel that supports that feature.
I did not make my plug with the two shorted pins because I messed one up while trying it and wanted to get one working. But I did test it to see if the hardware can take the full charge rate and it does handle the full ac charge rate ( tested with the cable mocked up and plugged in to the phone with d+ and d- shorted)

Do the magnets affect the phone's compass?

Just tested with a compass app in airplane mode it seams to slightly affect it when the bottom of the phone is pointed north it seams to throw it off a bit

Gotcha... I thought it might (Palm Pre didn't have a compass because of that). I wonder where the compass is located in our Evo, and if the magnets could be placed far enough away to not affect it.

You are my hero
I was probably the 2nd person to do it on the original evo. But it was pretty easy on that one. Ran that sucker right up to a few weeks ago when I got the lte. All the times I dropped it and the back cover and battery popped out, I'm amazed my solid (not stranded) wires never broke and needed to be re-done.
I hate cases, but you make a compelling case, and a compelling case for cases, in this case.
I have to say though that as much as I hate the ugly oversized boat shaped official car dock, It's *such* a relief that my phone no longer flies like a projectile right off the touchstone every time I step on it or hit a bump or let off the clutch etc, and it would usually dive right between the seat and drive train tunnel like it was a guided missile aiming itself. A 300hp turbo manual Saturn Sky Redline is just too violent for a heavy phone with extended battery only held in place by those magnets.
I got some strong magnets to try to make a stronger custom base but never got around to doing it. My idea was to hide the charger inside the dash, so there would be an invisible magic charger spot on the dash. Nothing showing on the outside, but the phone would stick to one spot. How sweet would that be!?

I like the hidden charger idea but i took a different approach i even decided to skip the sticky pad idea from before ..... check out the pictures this works very well for me and the tpu case seams to help it stay in place..

Thanks
I'll take some pictures when I get home I ordered another palm touchstone kit to.get the charger base to use in my car and I'm gonna make a New case with it so ill take some detailed pictures as I go
How did you make the USB port part? You said you "cant modify the standard micro usb cable". I see in the first post you had a USB end and in the last photos the cable looks like it is made in to the port on the phone or maybe it is the way the photo was taking.
I did find this on Amazon Powermat Receiver Door for HTC EVO 4G and was think about getting it and using the usb part.(Would put a link but need more post)

[MOD] Note 2 Wireless Charging [Origami style][No Solder]

Powermat wireless charging is now available to view here:

======================================================================================================================
First let me say big thanks to Ryan_G for creating the Note 2 Wireless charging mod - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951493
The style/technique I am going to show you is an improvement of my version on page 18 in the above thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33655816&postcount=171
It's very simple, cheap, clean, and easy to do. No soldering required... just folding strips of copper foil tape, and since this is the age of gangnam style, I will call it
Origami Style

You need:
1. Palm Pre Touchstone back cover = http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200650663739?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

3. Palm touchstone dock with wall charger - you can use an old charger with a 5v with a minimum 1amp and a mini usb plug - http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8474/8138632678_b0959be5ac_c.jpg

Stick the charging unit on the back cover so that it will sit approximately on top of the battery.
Cut about 3-4 inches of 6mm copper foil tape then cut it lentghwise.

I'll let the pics do the talking....
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. You need to remove the rubber sticker (see inside green circle) from the touchstone case, and put it on top of the contact points (rolled copper). This will put presure on the contacts as you fit the Note 2's back cover.
7. Below pic, green arrows show the approximate location of the copper on the back cover. The copper contacts on the back cover don't need to be perfectly aligned with rolled copper contacts on the phone, but this is your choice to make... (look at the green arrows again, and pic no. 10 below) Click link just below the picture for bigger image.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8065/8176857101_c857bec63b_k.jpg
8. On the back of the phone, on the right side of the battery are the terminals, stick another copper tape with rolled ends on each. Please note the top contact is the Positive, and the bottom is Negative, don't panic if the bottom copper tape comes in contact with the little screw as they are both negative.
9. You can see in pic below the rubber sticker I mentioned earlier in picture no. 6
bigger pic here: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8489/8176892024_b5f1333d95_k.jpg
10. This is how they will line up... don't forget to insulate the other exposed parts of the copper tape. I use Kapton tape, but you can use anything like electrical tape.
#############################################################
I have successfully used this mod with a Rock case. I had to sand the inner side of the case though.
##############################################################
Mod versions:
V1 = "Z" connector, needs etching and most expensive and time consuming
video
V2 = Origami
V3 = modified V1. Does not require etching so saves time and dosh.
video below.
Please NOTE, the mod below causes S-Pens problems. The only reson is that the receiver is a little too high. Once I replaced the contacts to the original "Z" design, the problem with S-Pen was gone.
I was also hoping to do this mod to a powermat wireless charging unit, but I was disappointed to find out the powermat receiver unit is so thick. See pictures below:
image below shows the actual innards of the powermat universal receiver which is charging my wife's Desire HD phone. Look at the light on the left from the powermat dock, and the green light on the phone.
image below shows the palm toughstone front alongside the powermat
and below shows the back sides ;-}
palm/powermat porn:
here we can clearly see the thickness on the powermat.
Only hope we have to be able to utilize the powermat is if there are Note 2 back cases that have more room inside to accommodate the thickness of the powermat, or if there is a thinner powermat receiver.
Confirmed works on the following variants:

Don't forget to put some insulating tape over all that exposed copper... You just want the ends exposed.

Nope it doesn't affect any of the S-Pen function or even the compass, and NFC work normal aswell. The magnets are not strong plus the battery seems to shield it from the rest of the phone. The ngroove snap will work as its a metalish sticket you either put on your phone or inside the case or battery cover. Though, it will kill Qi. I returned mine on my last device due to this. Never tested NFC as I never use it. If you dont care about Qi and possibly NFC, then its a great buy. There is also http://www.kenu.com/products/airframe-plus that just came out. I will be ordering this in the near future.
Hmm my parents will be using QI so that is a no go..
Does the Tmobile version come with QI preinstalled?
Also my dad doesn't want a vent one most likely, he likes the window shield car mount or what ever you would call that.

No accessories these days are made for specific phones. No company will limit themselves to a specific model when they can cater to everyone with a universal model. It will work with iPhones, Androids and tablets. Don't judge by the images they post.

The Air Dock is the best right now. Magnetic mounts are great - very easy to quickly place and pick up your phone, and it has qi charging. It's expensive though.
I´ll try my "old" one witch I have used with the mi2, very strong magnetic connection, but I have to wait to get a back cover to fix the metal plate (the original back cover is too tight)

I saw the video and I like that it attaches to the dash. But I have a few concerns..
1. The suction cup is sticky...does it get linty from dust and stuff?
2. Any marks on dash (if you have it on there) due to the sun and the suction on there? Like a discoloration?

I have the InfiniApps Magnetic stand and it works great. I'd be keeping it if I didn't want qi charging.
This is the one I used since Nexus. Still the best one on market.

I put the mount on my dash and have yet to take it off. I don't know if there is lint and if there is any discoloration. What I do know is the the mount is as sturdy as you can get. I had an oem Samsung mount that I would stick on the window, it is so hot down here in Florida that just about everyday, it would fall off and I would need to stick it to windshield again and again. This dock has yet to lose suction. Every other dock I have used would never stick to my dash without a 3m sticky plate that then the dock would sit on. Hth

I just took mine off after having it on for 2 years in Virginia - so it had to deal with a lot of flex in temperatures and a ton of humidity, etc. There was a ring imprint on the dash (it's leather wrapped) for a few days but then it disappeared. I have no discoloration, but that is not mount dependent - the material of your dash is what matters as a lot of plastic ones will fade over time, and the part hidden from the sun won't. You also can simply rinse the suction cup in the faucet and then mount it somewhere else - just make sure to clean the dust off of the dash very well first.
I ordered the air dock because there is nothing else that is as fast and convenient as the InfinniApps magnet mounting dock with Qi charging. I tried opening up one of those circle Powerbots and adding magnets as a DIY but the entire thing was a coil - no wonder why it was impossible to not place the phone right - and there was no place to put the magnets where they'd work without stopping the charging.

I don't suppose you have seen anyone using this with a G3 and the NFC/Qi sticker yet? I would be worried that the back is too textured to work on its own, and the sticker not fitting over both antennae. If it does work, I will put it on my short list; I am going to wait and see how much the Tylt Vu Car Charger ends up being before I commit to anything else since I have had such good luck with my desktop charger from them.

I'll let you know when mine comes in. But I'm using my InfinniApps mount right now and taped the metal plate over the qi/nfc sticker on the back cover and it sticks fine, and still charges on my Powerbot.

Just got the TYLT and very impressed by how fast it picks up the phone and charges even through my Unicorn Beatle case. Little on the higher priced but if it lasts a reasonable amount of time will definitely be worth it. I don't like using the USB port to charge seams to shorten the life of the port a little

not seen an app for this, but I've been extremely impressed with the Choetech redesigned one. Search Amazon for B00C40OG22 as I can't post outside links.
A whole lot cheaper than most the other ones but has worked perfectly so far, easy to position about 1/3 bottom of the phone.
I just got the Choetech Stadium 3 coil and it works great so far.
Wow, I guess it's been a while since I looked at qi chargers because these are all < half the price I remember.
Yea, no kidding. Last time I looked the prices were to much for me to bother. lol

I use the Choe and a Nilikin. Had them for a while. The Nilikin doesn't charge sideways if the phone has a thick case and it will not line up the coils. Friend has a huge case and mine is not so big. Don't know about the in between sizes.
Got my Choe Stadium yesterday. Working great so far, even with two wraps and a Ringke Fusion case. At first I thought it was charging slower than it was draining, but decided to leave on while I slept to see. Charged to full np. Not hot or anything.
I don't seem to get almost any variation in charge speed by placement according to Ampere.
Did yours come in a box labeled "UPGRADED" on it? Didn't see a mention of it on the page (might have just missed it), and was just curious.
I just received this today. It works great and you can charge wirelessly on the go or with usb.

The CHOE upgraded and CHOE stadium are different models. I ordered from amazon and they sent me the wrong one so I'm returning it. The CHOE upgraded is a square and has only 1 coil. While the CHOE stadium is a rectangle and has 3 coils.

I actually looked it up after I posted that. Forgot to update.
It is the Stadium, but apparently a newer version. (T511 was the old one I think, from a few years ago)
"T513 QI Compliance UPGRADED VERSION" is what's on the box, as well as the CHOE Stadium stuff on the back sticker/back of the (rectangle)charger.

That is a very good charger for the money. My wife has been using one for a few months and I recently picked one up to modify it for use on my ProClip car mount. Works great. I removed the case and mounted the PCB directly to the mount with 4 small bolts that go through 4 convenient holes in the circuit board then cut the lower portion of the rear case off so the remaining bit attaches to the top to cover the back of the PCB. I have only been using it for a few days but so far it has worked as expected. Looks pretty 'factory' too.

Dock options

I'm coming from a dying N5, which I "dock" on my nightstand and office desk with the Nexus (4) Orb wireless charger. Fantastic setup since the N4.
I see a few USB-C docks out there, but of course none have been designed for the Pixel (not to say they won't work). For those that do use a dock and will want one for the Pixel, I'm interested to see what people will choose to use or if any manufacturer will make a dock for the Pixel.
Making this thread for discussion and reviews/tests of any docks once we receive our phones. Cheers!
I need one too

It's cheap but seems to be made pretty well, i tried it with my lg g5, seems to work well. It has an attached usb cable but deos not come with a ac adapter, which is good because you can use a good quick charge block with it.

Did that work okay for the Pixel? Seems like an unobtrusive dock, but I'm wondering if the back supports the Pixel or if it'll just be held up by the USB-C connector (clearly not ideal).

The little back piece actually holds it up, I think it would be better if it was a little higher but it did work.
UNBELIEVABLE (read: very believable) that there is a not a SINGLE dock out there that supports USB C fast charging and actually has the proper resistor as to not damage your phone (according to the hardware approved by Benson and Nathan K at Google).
For me, fast charging was a mediocre substitute for wireless charging and now I have neither in a dock.

FYI guys this is *probably* (a lot of these docks are just rebranded, the specific link he reviewed is no longer there, but the dock looks the same) the DEMOM dock Benson reviewed here. Use at your own risk.

There's no way that'll provide quick charging. The other end of the cable is USB Type-A which cannot support the Pixel's fastest charging (18W Power Delivery) nor can it even support the Nexus 6P's fast charging (which is slower than the Pixel's).
Anyone try the https://www.seidioonline.com/product/seidio-desktop-charging-cradle-type-c/ ? It seems to take type c input as well.
That Seidio looks nice, I might pick one up as I'm a sucker for docks...
-Edit- just ordered one, I'll follow up next week when I get to use it.
Found an Apple style dock
I prefer this for about $6. You can't put the phone vertical, but its simple, stable and will accommodate cases. It folds easily into a pocketable piece and it won't over stress your USB C connector on your phone.

I got a couple of these and they're nice. I use my stock charger to plug into the dock. Drop the phone straight downward onto the connector then it hinges on a spring when you lean the phone back. It's a pretty stable dock if you need/want one. I'm using it with a diztronic TPU case and it could take larger too.

How would the Seidio do with a naked phone? I don't use a case, just a skin and wet-apply screen protector. I'd really love to find a good dock that's USBC on both ends, but don't want to stress the connector.

It should work fine. Well, even with my slim tpu the phone really rests on the connector, but I'm not worried about damage. It's a stable dock and I like it as it's straight USB-C.
