[Q] Accessing Internal Storage on Ubuntu Phone? - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As a Nexus 4 user, I take into note that I do not have expandable memory. When it comes to roms and backups, I tend to copy my backups and store them into Google Drive and delete them off f my device to save memory Well I've had my fun with Ubuntu for now and now I'd like to return back to Android, but because my nand is not on my device I cannot restore it. I've tried to connect my phone to my computer so I can put my nand back into my TWRP folder so I can recover back to Android but it seems that I cannot access my internal storage from neither Ubuntu not TWRP.. any suggestions?

There is a universal nexus Linux toolkit in nexus 7 android development, works for all nexus devices. You can flash your backup with that, or another ROM.

I can access my internal storage from TWRP, in fact it didn't touch my sdcard. That's weird.

Right now I am using the Nexus Root Toolkit, and I did make a backup through the program before hand, but I cannot perform the steps as it asks for. I've tried flashing stock through the program as well and I currently have no luck doing so. I have yet however to try ODIN, I may download it and see if I can get somewhere.

I may have worded it wrong, I meant as in accessing my internal storage through my computer so I can move my nandroid into my phone so I can recover from there.

I will go ahead and download ODIN and give that a try, I will post my results.

derp.. I only thought of ODIN since that was one of the suggestions the Nexus Root Toolkit said. Thanks for the suggestion. Will this work for folders as well?

I have Samsung Galaxy Nexus, flashing with ubuntu touch/phone. on my gentoo linux after running adb as root you can push any ROM in zip file format to /sdcard
Code:
adb push NameOfRomFile.zip /sdcard/
boot into TWRP/CWM ... flash rom (presumed android rom). ubuntu phone/touch is on developer preview stage. But Canonical said ubuntu device phone will be release in October 2013 ... I doubt the phone will be something better, ubuntu does not make something new ... unless it is ubuntu ... LOL. What I wonder, it is ubuntu, but to access the phone via PC still using ADB and NOT UDB .... ubuntu debug bridge

Lol, Ubuntu Debug Bridge on Ubuntu Touch connected to an Ubuntu desktop while watching an Ubuntu TV. I think the world would explode from too much awesome.

Is it possible to run a "BootCD" from android?

Hi, I have made a Multiboot USB-stick witch contains Win 7 install, Ubuntu Live, Hiren's and many other distros. But is it possible to some how move the files from the external SD-card on my android phone and make the computers boot directly from the phone?
Can you in that case force the phone to use the right usb-mode so that the computer recognizes it as a ordinary bootable USB-stick?
I saw some old post from 2009 where some user managed to get a computer too boot BCD from the phone. But the catch was that he had to click the "mount usb" on the phone directly after the PC started booting. And many computers may have passed the booting point before the USB-mode had finished mounting.
I tried booting Damn Small Linux from my Supersonic earlier with no luck. Android requires certain drivers to mount and the BIOS typically has the bare minimum to boot from USB, DVD, and HDD.

I'm sorry if this isn't what you are looking for as I don't have an answer to your specific question. But if you're just looking for a way to boot other OS's check out this thread:

Ah I'm sorry. Needed to sleep some more.. it sounds like that would be difficult to do though. You would need the phone to be mounted as USB before the computer even started booting. That's way beyond me though, good luck.

It seems feasible. Never tried it..
But, i would start by looking for an app called unetbootin. Its a free app that allows you to build a bootable flash drive. I've used is several times with actual flash drives. As long as your device is setup to allow the pc to mount it as a disk, in theory it should work.
As far as android accessing the disk after its been formatted, i have no idea.
I boot in with dual sd and yumi. But I think my boot file configuration is wrong or what..cus I'm trying to boot spotmau 2011. Which is unlisted iso. Anyone can provide a small bootable file so I can try boot it..

Put your unlock.bin into toolkit folder, and just follow other steps in order, also copy supersu to your sd card and flash from within recovery. hasoon has made our lives easier with AIO
Sent from my HTC One XL
also make sure the path to your AIO folder has nothing but single words. If you dropped in it the desktop and your name is two words, it might have trouble. Move the folder to your c drive and try from there instead.
I used AIO on win8 pro with no trouble

a sorry didnt see that you are using mac... well then you need to add your adb command to your path variable so bash can find it... should be the same principle on mac as for other operating systems. just google that or execute the command directly from within it's directory so bash can find it.
edit: ah ok then good that it's fixed

HELP! No ROM Installed/No External SD Recognized

I think I've made a huge mistake.
I just wiped my device in TWRP because the last CM Nightly I installed was acting up.
I went into TWRP, wiped and factory reset. I then rebooted and went into TWRP again.
I wanted to install CM 9.1, which I copied onto my 64GB SanDisk Ultra, and I was thinking to just flash it from the external sd.
I read somewhere on xda that I needed to maybe use a smaller SD card and have the format in FAT32, which I did, but TWRP still does not recognize them.
I am currently stuck with TWRP v2.3.1.0, no way to flash a new rom from a blank internal memory or an external memory.
I tried updating SDK and the most updated drivers for the device through the Device Manager and use "adb push" or "adb sideload" but the device is not recognized.
Can someone give me some kind of suggestion to solve this situation.
I’d suggest using a linux install to do the adb stuff if you’re not doing so already, no need for crazy windows drivers to see a connected device.

Windows 8 is a bugger to get drivers working properly.
Try and use a windows 7 machine or a friends laptop or try the following instructions.
Windows 8 Instructions
How to Disable Driver Signature Enforcement in Windows 8:
From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon).
Click ‘More PC Settings’.
Click ‘General’.
Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.
Wait a bit.
Click ‘Troubleshoot’.
Click ‘Advanced Options’
Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’
Click Restart.
Ubuntu is a linux based Operating System, and can be used to do most things Windows 8 does, sometimes worse, sometimes better. So in this case, it's less trouble to connect an android device to a linux OS such as Ubuntu, as it can recognize a telephone without having to install drivers.
If you want to give it a go, you can install Ubuntu alongside Windows 8.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/tired-of-windows-8-how-to-dual-boot-windows-ubuntu/
And then install Fastboot and ADB:
http://putokaz.wordpress.com/2012/08/29/install-adb-and-fastboot-android-tools-in-ubuntu-via-ppa/
But, I'd stick to Windows and follow the advice of Flumpster if you're not too confident installing a second operating system.
I can and have knowledge of installing another OS to run alongside Windows.
I use VirtualBox to run Mac OSX and Android. Can I run Linux on VirtualBox and do the process through that?
I am not quite sure what I should do after disabling Driver Signature Enforcement on Windows 8...
Yes, you can install Linux in a virtual machine - give it a try. If the device is still not recognized via OS running in the virtual machine, you can then always install to your hard disk and try that route.
The other option is to run Ubuntu as a live cd eg from the disk in memory (not install) and do it that way. I first unlocked and rooted my mobile this way. I can give more info on this if you like.

I think I'll give a multi-boot option a try. I've been wanting to install a different OS anyway since upgrading to Windows 8. Now I just have incentive.

Just a quick thought after re-reading your first post, I'd try a smaller sd card (16 or 32GB). I have heard of the larger faster cards giving some people problems.
Solved!
After trying to install Linux using Ubuntu 13.04 and getting more errors (something with the UEFI vs Legacy Boot installation), I decided to retry and find the original Windows drivers for the TF201.
I found one through Softpedia, downloaded it, used the "Have Disk" option when installing the yielded "Transformer" device in the Device Manager and sideloading the new CM 10.1 Nightly onto it.
Works like a charm!
Thanks everyone for the support!

Mac unable to see M9 as a Hard Drive

It had it ask me what to do with the USB connection when I plugged it in, which I don't mind. I choose File Transfer. My Mac isn't recognizing it as a hard drive, like it did. Gonna have to figure this one out... Any ideas? (I never use HTC Sync...)
Update: I did the online chat with HTC and tried almost everything from clearing the Cache partition to reinstalling Sync Manager for the drivers. Still not working. Funny enough it is working on my Windows 10 laptop....

Are you using the android file transfer app on your mac?
My experience is that it will only mount the extsd as a drive...internal sd needs that app, who knows why

Up until I updated to Marshmallow, I've been able to plug into my Mac and use both internal and SD card as hard drives. I've never used HTC Sync.... It still works like normal on my Windows 10 laptop.

You got lucky that it worked as a drive before, but according to google this is the standard way to transfer via mac:
https://www.android.com/filetransfer/
"To transfer files, Android File Transfer must be installed on your computer"

I used the program, and yes it worked. I really don't think I was "lucky " before. Its worked from the second I got my Mac a year ago. Even HTC and Apple thinks it should recognize it. I think it might be a bug with this version of M. I'm betting they fix it.

Honestly, I'm not even sure if I have a twrp installed. I can see both on my Windows 10 machine... I can see it on the Mac using Android File Transfer. I could plug directly into the Mac before the M update and could see both as HD's...and of course drag and drop files.
I assumed you were rooted. If you aren't, you wouldn't have twrp.
But I believe if you put the phone in download mode, you should be able to sideload files.
