[Q] T-mobile SGS2 Hercules weird problem - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a SGH T989 and got it unlocked for use in India..worked great for 2 months and then i rooted, flashed AOKP jellybean using CWM....after that, worked great for 1 month... Now the problem is that.....
My phone shows full signal and in the "about phone" menu, the signal strength is -100dBm BUT i cannot make calls and i'm out of coverage area for others.. The weird thing is that this happens only at certain spots (unfortunately, my workplace)...the device works just fine in other places...i ruled out a network issue coz my sim is good in other phones at the problem zones.
I tried another network's sim and it had call drop issues....the call would get disconnected after a few minutes and the duration of the call wasn't constant....this was also when the phone showed signal strength of around -100dBm. I had used this network before and it was working good with the phone..
I tried a master reset, complete system format in CWM recovery, reverted back to stock rom using odin, changed radios (UVLE1,UVLH1 and UVLI1)....nothing has worked so far.
There was no external injury or water damage to the phone, i didn't install any app outside of the play store and i use genuine charger for my phone.
I love my phone too much to let go....please gimme a solution
Thanks!!

You need to ask the network if they are having problems .
Have you checked /remade your network settings ??
Could be a rom problem a modem problem a sim card problem or even a CSC problem with wrong settings .
Check settings clean sim card that does not help put your phone back to a warranty state flash stock rom and clear rom counter . Test if faulty take to a service centre .

Im on 3 also i have had a few times the same problem mate, lets say maybe 4 or 5 times, it usually happens if i lose my internet connection it still shows me having signal but cant make a call or sms. i got no answer from 3 either
Check the status screen. I get this and when it happens where it should say T-Mobile it says Emergency Calls Only. I figured my SIM card was at fault so wedged some paper behind it to hold it in place and the problem has almost completely stopped.

Rub the terminals on the sim card with a rubber to remove any static build up

Are you guys running an I-9100T from 3? All modems from any rom you install won't work with the T. You'll need your stock KF4 modem.
Get it here:

I had a similar problem. Read more about it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1225849
tried going back to kf4 still no luck its only in certain places in me house where it does it everywhere else i have 1 or 2 or none at all bars of signal
3 customer service rang me up told them i wanted cancel the contract bcus of it. they knocked the contract price down from £30 to £25.75 for the text 500 plan with them. bit annoyed that i can only get signal in certain places of me house but cant argue on the price as well as gettin the phone for free
because 3 dont have a 2g network in the UK so if you dont have 3g coverage it will show a network signal but you cant make calls or sms
I'm having the same problem but with o2. I lose signal regularly at home as I live on the perimeter, but when I get signal bars back againwhen i go into town, it tells me that the network is unavailable. I have to switch off and on again to re register and then it works fine again until the next time the signal is dropped... It's annoying in the morning because i can wake up and see full signal on the phone all morning, but people are trying to contact me and not getting through because in reality, the network is not connected! I'm sure o2 have a 2g network, so I would presume it's a phone issue...
Hi all,
I live in France using SFR network and I get the same issue here using KI3 but I had the same problem with KH3.
the behavior on the phone is network seems to be good everytime/everywhere but sometimes people who try to reach me go directly to my voicemail and I receive sms with some delays.
When network works again, I mean I don't see it but I know it because I receive a couple of sms at the same time and a call from my voicemail
it means that my phone seems to be connected to the gsm network but is not, It loose the gsm network...
If you can give me your experience.
thx
I've got the same issue. (tacticman), I'm also on SFR network, i had this since KH3, never before. Now i'm on KI3, it's still here.
I always use CF-Root kernel, i tried to wipe, restore old backups, it does not change anything. I also tried GS II repair tools, nothing too...
The only thing I found to solve (temporarly) the problem, switch to offline mode (mode Hors ligne in FR) and then disable it.
But the problem occurs very often, it's very disturbing.
My IMEI number is still here.

Signal problems - standard Orange SII

I'm having problems with my Galaxy SII, on Orange in the UK. There are huge problems with the signal. Bear in mind I have recently bricked the phone, but resurrected it with a short stay in the airing cupboard.
With the SIM in, I can get a decent signal at first, but this then drops away to nothing, pretty quickly. Sometimes, I don't even get the signal.
However. with the SIM out, I get a full signal for emergency calls. At this point, it looks like a network issue, with patchy signal.
However, I then swap the SIM over to my HTC Desire, and get a reasonable signal sitting at 2 bars now. Same is true outside where I had 4 bars on the HTC, and nothing on the Galaxy.
Any thoughts on this one? I am a bit frightened of calling Orange as I no longer have my insurance with them, and their repair department is a bit unprofessional - last time I called them, they started making an insurance claim on what was a warranty issue without even telling me, until they told me about the excess I would pay.
I'm running Gingerbread.BVKI3, version 2.3.4.
Thanks.

flash another modem , i recomand xxki4 , via CWM . use search button and type : modem , click on first link and you will find a lot of modems.
OK, got to the next stage of things - I can't flash a new modem using Odin, as my phone isn't recognising. Not even without Odin. I am getting the MTP connection come up on my phone, and it is charging perfectly well, but I can't get any access to it on the computer, not even as an external drive. Is this potentially a phone problem, or is this a software/drivers/hardware problem? I don't recall any permanent problems before it got bogwashed (occasional connection issues, but easily solved by disconnecting and reconnecting). If it is a phone problem, are there any fixes? I just want to flash the modem, not do a whole system reflash. The external and internal SD cards are still working fine.
And I will need step by step instructions to achieve this. Whilst I am good with computers, I tend to leave my phones alone to avoid invalidating warranties and the like.

[Q] Phone Calls do not connect

Hi All,
I've been a visitor to XDA for couple years now and greatly appreciate the people who post here who have helped me to custom my Galaxy SI, SII & SIII with generally no issues. I've had my SIII for about a year and a half now running CWM & CF root with either Darky's ROM or a Nightly build of Cyanogen Mod.
Since moving to a new house (few weeks ago) the signal on my handset drops as I make/receive calls. I assumed initially it was just the signal in the area and as I had been running a non-stable build I flashed a full release to be certain. I chose Delta ROM initially but have since flashed Darky's, Delta (again), Cyanogenmod (Nightly, stable, unofficial 11), multiple different Modems when running CM (area specific, model specific & the emergency one for EFSv2) and followed the guide to reset to stock (unroot, official recovery, reset counter & stock ROM) none of which has helped.
To be specific, I can use the Wi-Fi, 3G, send texts and use apps which use 3G to send texts (MightText); which to me (Novice at this stuff) seems to indicate that the 2G & 3G functions of the phone work. Yet still as I make a call, or receive one, I do not hear ringing, person speaking or any form of buzzing; this applies if I use the phone as normal, the speaker phone or a handsfree set.
Roughly 30 seconds into the call the network drops (signal bars go empty), the phone call displays 'Out of Network Area' or some such, the call ends and the phone returns to the home screen where roughly a minute later the network reconnects and I can use 3G again, send texts etc. as above, except still cannot make calls.
I don't know if it has any bearings but on Cyanogenmod the time before the network drops is around the 45-60 seconds mark, all other ROMs disconnect at around the 30 second mark and my GF has an S4, on O2 as well, and the signal on her phone has been temperamental lately, but has not shown the same problem, she is running Stock firmware without root etc.
If I had to replace a component instead of sending off to service centre, how difficult would that be?
Thank you in advanced,
Martin
If it still has the same issue with full stock rom then it's hardware, motherboard/antenna etc. Unless you often dismantle and successfully reassemble mobile phones it isn't recommended to try yourself.
Samsung give two year limited warranty, worth trying with service centre after resetting counter.

Yeee I had a look around alot of forums for similar issues but could only find posts where there was no signal at all or playing up due to modem etc.
In desperation I opened dialogue with an O2 Guru who said hardware, but just seemed very coincidental to have happened when we moved =/
Thank you for confirming though worth a shot!
Martin
You moved so you may not have the same signal strength .
You need to work out if it is the network or the phone .
Try another phone in your location with your sim .
Test your phone next to an O2 mast .
Wipe phone flash stock rom for your network and test .

The O2 Guru I spoke with said the signal at my home address should be OK, my GF has an S4 on O2 and although a bit crackly, her phone functions works and I have my SIM in a temp phone, a Galaxy Ace, which has also been working fine in the area.
It's a good idea to test closer to a mast, I don't know where the nearest one is to be honest, is there anywhere I can find this out?
My phone is currently flashed back to stock, that's recovery, ROM, counter, modem (I believe) etc. followed this guide to do so:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323847
What boggles me is that the phone is able to send texts, use 3g and search for different networks to 'register' etc. but the phone call disconnects. I would have thought that the same component which connects to network to send texts would connect to make calls? Is it possible that where I am in a weak signal area, the phone has damaged the component by increasing the gain by too much/for too long? If so is that because there was custom software or would the settings for this component be the same as stock?
Bit concerned about sending it off and the possible questions/costs associated with this sort of thing. This is the first time I've had a phone which has a hardware fault, all the other times a phone has played up its usually due to the software which can be flashed using any number of methods found on this site.
What a frustration, sorry to ask so many questions, just at a bit of a loss as to what to do with it now!
Thanks,
Martin
In a weak signal area your phone has to output 10x the signal strength to maintain voice call, which it probably didn't have to before. Data and text use much less power, hence why they still work. To test just find somewhere with full bars strength, maximum ASU value in settings, about, status.
It sounds like a high resistance gap somewhere, it gets hotter during use until it breaks the connection - then cools to join again.
Just make sure you describe the fault correctly and it should be repaired.

Signal loss sim

Hello everybody, I'm literally going crazy, I have a s3 with the firmware and modem I9300XXUGND5 MG4 the imei is right but I can not in any way to let him take the signal from the sim. I tried several times to put the firmware with odin the sim on another cell works perfectly.
I state that one occasionally takes and you can not make calls, but only in rare cases, the only time the reception lasted more than usual after the modem is installed MG4 and I did a restore sopo but some have returned to lose the signal. I'm really going crazy because I do not understand what's the catch
If it works for a while then stops it is probably a hardware fault.
yes but I do not have the icon of the signal there are notches gray not white and it seems that you want to connect and tramtti seems that receives
Before he went perfectly :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Emergency Calls Only / No Data SIM - Three UK

Hello all,
I am having an intermittent but a strange signal problem with my wife's OnePlus X and I suspect that this is some sort of software issue with the modem firmware and not a hardware fault.
Basically if you reboot the phone, 9 times out of 10 there will be absolutely no signal whatsoever on the 3 UK network, the phone will just state emergency calls only. This happens on both 3G and 4G, but we usually have 4G turned off as there are not many areas within our region that support 4G yet. If you search Available Networks 3 doesn't show up.
Usually leaving the phone for hours the signal will come back, but sometimes it can be fixed by going into the Test Menu by putting *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer and going to Phone Information -> Toggling the Radio off and On a few times, but this doesn’t work every time. My phone is also on the Three network, so I have tried putting both SIMS's in the OnePlus X at the same time and the same issue occurs in both SIM Slots. If I put a Vodafone SIM in as well as the Three SIM, the Vodafone SIM works absolutely fine, regardless of the SIM slot it goes in, but it maintains a signal each time. The problem isn’t signal in the area as we have full signal in our house. If I put my wife's SIM into my LG G4 it works absolutely fine 100% of the time.
Three will not help us as the phone isn’t supplied by them, this is getting to the point now where this phone is becoming unreliable to use because if you have to reboot, chances are you won't have any signal for hours on end.
This happens on OOS and CM13 and has done for months.
Has anyone come across this issue before?
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?

I have the same problem and solution is nowhere to be found...
Did you find any solution to this? I've got this problem with my OPX.

My wife ended up getting rid of the phone a few months ago, she couldnt put up with it any longer as it was just the same. I don't think it was a hardware fault with the phone as it worked fine on any other network but Three. The phone supported all the frequencies that Three offers, so I have no idea why it didnt work right but certainly something wasn't right.

When I had recently visited the UK, I had trouble connecting to the Three as well(through my home SIM as International Roaming). It didn't work so I ended up buying an O2 SIM that worked just fine.
I fixed it by putting some scotch tape over the back of the sim card, My OPX is almost 2 years old and the sim card is not in good contact with the phone inside I think.
