3d launchers - HTC One X+

Anyone using one of the 3d launchers (TSF, Next, SPB) as their main launcher app on their HOX phones?
Obviously with the expense of them, most seem to be around £10 ($14usd) which is very expensive, it isn't really an option to try it for free for 15 minutes. I have tried both Next 3d and TSF Shell, played around for an hour or so then removed them as the apps were from a naughty source.
They certainly look cool enough, but us there really any advantage to them over the usual launchers such as Nova, Apex, Holo etc.
I found TSF shell the nicest and smoothest but had a bit of a learning curve, no fixed dock etc.
Apologies for the crappy topic, just wanted to get some thoughts on these launchers, gimmicky or not?

I love SPB, very polished and even nicer in tablet mode. But... way to much monies.

It's a lot of money for eye candy!
We androiders are a strange breed that like control. We also are restless types that change our launchers every six months or so.
So if you have the money Go for it but be aware that in a few months you will go back to an old favourite or move on to the next flashy launcher.

Beta testers wanted for SPB Mobile Shell 5.0′s 3D UI

I believe this belongs in this section because it potentially involves a whole new UI not only for the Vibrant but for Andoid as a whole.. if im mistaken my apologies and please move to the right section..
per AndoidSpin
http://androidspin.com/2010/11/18/full-3d-ui-coming-to-android-sorry-adw-i-might-just-switch/
"We all love eye candy when it comes to how our devices looks and feels when we are using it. HTC Sense UI has been one of the most visually appealing UIs to date in my opinion. Some have loved Motoblur and even Touch Wiz. If none of those appealed to you then you probably moved on to Launcher Pro, ADWLauncher, Home++ or one a few others that do exist. I think any of us with a higher end device are ready to unleash its true graphical power. Why not also make it useful and extremely customizable right?
SPB Mobile Shell 5.0 is on the horizon. If you are unfamiliar with SPB Mobile Shell, then you may not have ever owned a powerful Windows Mobile device. Previous versions of this software were religiously used by users of the HD2. Not only was it a more functional UI for the device but it also solved oodles of freezing and lag issues that people were experiencing.
You may have already seen the demo of the this software. As we all know though, new Android users are added daily and deserve a look into what is coming. Here is a short video of the new SPB Mobile Shell 5.0. I still can’t locate a launch date unfortunately. As soon as I find out I will be sure announce it for everyone. I am really looking forward to this software.
Do you think this will replace your current launcher?"

Already threw my hat (and my Vibrant) into the ring. Looks fairly interesting. Can't wait to see how its features compare to ADW.

Besides the childish references to unfortunate birth defects and Christian divinity; $30. 00 is crazy high for this platform. For $3.99 I get launcher pro, for $1 got SwiftKey after beta. I used SBP on PPC to Win Mo. It was very good.
This better be better than God.

That is how much I paid for mine when I had windows mobile phone. For their work, it is worth it. They take their time to design the best mobile UI in my opinion. Do we say futuristic??? I love this new UI, can't wait for it.
this UI has always been this price.
I remember back in WinMo.
one of the highest selling apps too.
I would love to test this out, my main concern on it is battery life. I am currently going through issues with Launcher Pro sucking the life out of my phone. I can only imagine what this will do.

SPB 3.5 is listed at $29.95
I don't think this app would go anywhere if they intend to charge more than $4
So finaly got to try the beta SPB Mobile Shell and it looks very very cool. It's going to get some getting used to, as it's quite different from any other launcher... I'm going to test it in more detail tomorrow morning and then email SPB my feedback!

I had this on my older phones it was a great UI but still not worth the cash, signed up for the beta just to see how nice it is on Andriod
Ok so I've been running SPB mobile shell over nero3 with black froyo and I like it very much. It'd be nice to discuss it more here with other beta testers but I'm not sure how the devs would take to that so I won't. But I will say that this a great home alt and I am excited to partake in beta testing it.

I didn't make the cut for the beta apparently. But to be honest, I'm not all that worried about it if it's gonna cost anywhere near $30. That's the biggest mistake they'll make. Not only will their sales be far lower than they could be, but they could pack that .apk full of DRM and defensive measures but it would be cracked in no time. Then everyone will just download it for free. You gotta be realistic in this market, I don't care how innovative your UI is.

spb shell 3d

Anyone try this yet 15 bucks is steeeep for a launcher, however its not showing up in my market
Works on my vibrant, no go on nook, though it was stated it'd wouldn't work on tablets. Painfully slow start up (even after reboot). Otherwise it's really smooth with a bit of eye candy. That price doesn't justify it though and I still feel as if nothing much changed from bet.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA Premium App
Tryed it on my dell streak, nook no go to, however eye candy was there but wasent as smooth as adw pro so got a refund, def not worth 15 bucks there loss
I tried it while it was beta and was not impressed. Although it looks great I found the UI to be counterintuitive. The only thing I really found neat about SPB 3d is the morphing widgets. Although the 2-state morphing widgets look cool they do not really add any functionality (in fact they kind of defeat the purpose of widgets as they hide important info until you interact/open them).
In my opinion SPB is all eye-candy with no killer features. Even if it was really good I don't think I could justify $15 when there are plenty of great launchers out there for little to no cost.
Love it on my phone - hate it on my Nook.
It does not scale up well at all to the 7'' form factor. Save your $15 and buy ADW EX or LP+ instead.
RexxDominus
ok... i'm running MiUi.us Build Number 1.7.22 on my nook color. i took the risk and i paid for the SPB Shell 3D. and i'm very happy to say that it work's great. very few issues, smooth and very responsive. i know there really isn't a fully working tablet operating system out there yet. or at least none that i have came across on yet. but this launcher with the new tablet setting they added make's it feel way more like a tablet and not a clone operating phone system. only thing i would (REALLY) like to see is if someone could put one of these operating system's together (without) all the phone things it brings. other then that i say if you like to give this a try i don't think you would be disappointed.
I agree. I have been using it on my droid x and now for my rooted nook. The new "experimental" tablet view is perfect for the noon. Just saw a notice from the company (spb.com) that there is a UI Builder to allow devs to customize it. Not sure if this is just for WM or android OS as it doesn't clarify. Would allow for some nice widget and skin customization. Any devs out there want to give it a go if so?
Tablet mode does work quite well, but it's not nearly as smooth as launcher pro and all processes combined it needs close to 150 MB of RAM, which even with 512 MB of RAM is quite a lot.

I actually dig it. Works well, although the transitions are just a bit choppy, but not that bad. For a honeycomb looking UI, I'll take it.

It's pricey so I bought it to test it. Refunded shortly after to play with some other launchers. Low ans behold, I went back to rebuy it. Lol. It's pretty unique and really damn smooth. Never thought I would pay that much for an app, but its pretty sweet

I purchased it and got rid of it after about a week. Not worth the price in my eyes especially since I'm not using it. Regardless, still not worth the price. It really made the phone lag in my opinion and you don't have access to a lot of the stock widgets. It's unique but too buggy for me.

I'm not opposed to buying apps, I almost always get the paid version of ANY app just to support the developers.
I made an exception in this case however, the price is so out of line on this app I decided to try a cracked version first. After using it for one day I deleted it and decided the price was ridiculous.
give it time to be worked on. go launcher was great until ICS came. good alternative with similar widgets is adw ex with android perfect widgets. my only problem with spb is no scrollable widgets. once that's available it'll be my default launcher unless that new tsf project can out compete spb which I.doubt since spb was superior back in the winmo days

The last time I checked it took SPB Shell 3d a long time to load. I don't know if this is the case anymore but on my Droid with only 256mb ram it couldn't handle it lol
works pretty well on the rezound. Phone definitely has the muscle to handle it. I was using it for about the last week when it started having errors and wanting to start in safe mode. Decided to just go back to sense.

For $10 its way over priced. The amount of widgets is so small that it doesn't justify the cost.
10 bucks, what is that?? All those overpricing comments makes me wonder, who are writing these comments..?
Who that can afford a prime, but not an app with the price of a frozen pizza?
Well I can honestly say that its worth it, yes the app is still going through its teething phase, its just come out of beta, but there's been some huge improvements since the beginning and their support has been top notch. I backed the project via Kick starter, hence I've been playing with it since the first beta release. A whole lot of new widgets are inbound very soon and I particularly like the "Make a widget" widget, it allows you to specify a particular URL to keep track of a particular website, this is excluding the browser specific widget that should be coming soon.
$10 might seem costly for an app, especially one that is still hasn't got all of its features yet, but definitely worth looking at in the near future when they've worked out all the kinks and added some more useful widgets

It's not about being able to afford $10 bucks, but what you're getting for that $10 bucks. If an app isn't worth $10 bucks then it's not worth $10 bucks. The reviews speak for themselves about the quality of the experience you're getting for that $10 bucks. Like I said before it has potential to be worth that amount but currently it just isn't at this point. Barely cracking a 3 out of a 5 start rating when I can easily see many of the other launchers are offering a better experience (nova launcher, go launcher, apex launcher, etc) at a much lower price. Granted, none of those launcher are being as ambitious as the chameleon launcher is trying to be, but it's not an excuse to say this launcher is worth $10 at this level. I actually really liked the idea of chameleon launcher and still do. It's just not ready for prime time yet.

Feel free to send me $10 then if its nothing to you. But seriously would you spend ten bucks to have all the widgets you already have for free? For my purposes I'm not going to spend 10 bucks for 1. a complete launcher replacement that doesnt have 3/4 of the widgets I currently use. 2. An incomplete product. If this was final and it had all the bells and whistles...fine, 10 bucks...take my money. But its not there yet.
Seriously you'd pay $10 for a frozen pizza? You sir do not know good pizza.
I think that a lot of the bad reviews are from when the app was initially put up on Play. It was available to the public, but it would only authenticate for people who had supported the project on Kickstarter. A lot of other people downloaded it and were pissed that they couldn't get it to work, even though it was clearly stated that it was only for the Kickstarter supporters.
Personally, I think it's got a bit of distance to cover before it is perfect, but it's totally usable at this point. I've been using it as my daily driver launcher for the past few days, and it's working great. The new widgets should be coming soon, and there are several developers working on additional widgets that will be available outside of the normal Chameleon pantheon.

As an early backer I am pleased to see someone has finally seen some sense. IMO this is a fine launcher and totally unique in that it fully utilizes the real estate available to tablets like ours. It has big potential too in the way the widgets have been opened up to to community development.
Unfortunately, someone high up in their organization got greedy and launched a semi-finished product at a ridiculous price that was only ever going to generate negative feedback and few sales.
Let's hope it's not too late to rescue what is a very fine project.
PS a myth that really needs knocking on the head is the one that says it only works with its own widgets. This is just not true. For some time now Android widgets work just fine within the Chameleon framework :good:.

I bought this launcher at the new price to support the project as well.

It looks great.. Much work to do..
Both the Twitter and Facebook widget should be improved. In the Twitter widget the tweets sometimes doesn't show (some does) before many seconds later. The text sometimes doubble up.
And in both those widgets it should be a option to post a tweet/meesage without starting, for me TweetCaster and the browser. It should also be able to see comments etc.
The Calender widget doesn't work for me??
And Android widget do work, but not properly as mention above..
Apart from this, it works fine. Get more widgets and improve those allready there..

JUST My opinion
Chameleon videos where shown when they where trying to get people to donate to the project. Man I thought they where the bomb. I was really wanting to get my hands on it. Then we got what we paid for I couldn't believe it was so lamb! I felt like I had been taken! With all the updates that have been sent I have been hopeful every time and every time I have been disappointed. This is still one of the worst launchers on the market. I agree it has potential but now the update and changes have all but stopped. This app takes away the freedom to make the prime what you want and is only allowed to be what the developers want it to be. I know some will not like what I say but I paid the money and feel I have the right to speak on my experiences. So sorry if I offend you with my lame review but fact it they need to do ALLOT of work to make this thing passable. So bottom line don't buy it until you look at ALL reviews of it not just one.
Does the team still plan on updating? If so any hopes that it will live up to it's potential and hype?
for s4 I think I'll give it a go
after aboout two days i came to the realization that i just wasted 10 bucks. I uninstalled it. Hopefully their next project will be better since they have all our money to fund it.

This Will Be My First Android Tablet - Tips to Get Started

So I've owned Android phones for years. Droid X, S3, and now the One M8. I even had a brief stint with an Android Tablet, the HP Touchpad after the firesale, but it's been years and I barely used it anyway.
So I'm very new to the Android Tablet world, and I'm looking for input on how to get started.
What are the best tablet-optimized apps? (this is the biggest one I'm looking for)
What are the best tablet-optimized games?
What is the best productivity suite for tablets? (I've asked this in several threads and gotten some good feedback, but I'm always looking for more)
Where is a good place to get ideas for creative homescreen setups for tablets? (I'm one of the crazy people who's really into that)
Any other awesome tablet-specific tips anyone has?
Thanks so much. Can't wait to get this baby!

I dont know the answers to most of your questions since my app use and games tend to be limited to just the few types of games I enjoy these days, but as for homescreens I am sure we will see some awesome homescreen setups in a thread here soon enough. That would be the best place to get ideas I think because it will be from other users of this tablet. I love to customize the homescreen with new designs often too, but I generally stay with a similar feel. Which is minimal icons and widgets on screen, just a handful of shortcuts to launch the most common things, and double tap to get to the app drawer which I organize and filter to only show the specific apps I would ever use and not all the random ones. Here are a couple I did on my Nexus 10 from a couple years back:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36978577#post36978577
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36270187#post36270187
IMO, it should be the other way around. You should buy a tablet for a reason/purpose, not find a reason/purpose to buy a tablet. Otherwise, it'll end up sitting in a drawer just like the previous one.
You say you've used Android phones before. The tablet experience isn't much different besides the bigger screen. The same advantages and disadvantages are present. It's pretty much universally agreed upon that Android is still pretty weak for tablet-optimized apps and games. It all comes down to your preference for screen sizes.
The reason I use a tablet is because sometimes I wish my smartphone had a bigger screen. It's nice to surf the web, watch Youtube, and read e-books. I run the pretty much the same apps on both my Tab S and my Nexus 5.

Clash of Clans should work well on Android tablets. It's a game that really needs a bigger screen. If you like city building games, try the new SimCIty buildit game which EA touts as being tablet optimized. Also, i read somewhere that Hearthstone will be release by the end of the year for Android tablets specifically (phone releases won't be available until later).
My two favorite customization apps are Zooper Widget and Nova Launcher. You should give them a try on the tablet. Checkout the XDA forum section for Themer and Zooper to get ideas: http://forum.xda-developers.com/themer

I'd definitely recommend using Google Apps (Keep, Drive, Slides, etc.) these sync across your Google account which makes them extremely useful when you use a PC. You could use Microsoft's version of apps of this if that is more your style. I'd get a controller if you're planning on some heavy gaming as well; there are tons of bluetooth ones that work great. I definitely recommend rooted this tablet as there will tons and tons of development for it! Good luck!
