[Q] Gah! Head hurts, want to root my GT-7510 ICS - Please help! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been reading forums and searching forums all day, but can't seem to find a definitive answer to whether I'll be able to root my specific version of tablet or not, there's so many different types, build numbers, UK versions/US versions my head is close to blowing! Any advice would be soo much appreciated.
I bought a tablet off Ebay, a GT-7510 (US version I think, although I live in the UK) which came with Honeycomb installed. I then updated OTA to ICS 4.0.4, but it seems pretty laggy in general compared to the other Galaxy tabs I've seen, now I'm at the point where I'd like to root it and try some custom roms to see if they're any better than the stock ICS rom.
Here is the info for my tab which I think is relevant:-
Android Version 4.0.4
Kernel version 3.1.10
Build number IMM76D.UELPL
I've found so many different methods of how to root certain variations, but can't be certain if one of them applies to my tablet, whether I'd have to flash it back to Honeycomb, whether it only works for UK or US versions etc etc, that I've given up searching and thought I'd start my own post, and hope that somebody could tell me whether I can definitely root my device, and which would be the best method to do it? I have no warranty on my device as it's a refurb, so rooting doesn't bother me, but I'm worried about using the wrong method and bricking it.
Really hope somebody can help me, thanks very much in advance for any advice.

For the P7510, rooting it is dead easy - just download a recovery and flash it using ODIN. See the rooting guides here. Honeycomb doesn't complicate things at all.

Thanks k1mu, when you say honeycomb doesn't complicate it at all, some of the guides I've read specify that they're for honeycomb installations only, I have the stock ICS rom which was installed OTA, is Android version not an issue anymore, and the guides will work no matter which version you have installed? Also, my tablet is a GT-7510, not a P7510, not sure what the difference is, if any? Sorry if I seem dumb, just want to be sure before I go ahead.
Thanks very much for your help.

Just to update for anybody searching who is as confused as I was, I got root access using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029664 from user Jovimon.

[Q] New to S2/Android... coming from WebOS

Hi guys,
I plan to buy on June 14th the Galaxy S2 on Bell Canada network, it will replace my Pre2.
I was wondering if you can recommend me a specific ROM that will get rid of TouchWiz and allow me to run Gingerbread stock. I'm not familiar at all with Android, as I never use it before. That is the main reason why I rather ask the question here instead of searching, as I would not know what to search for.
A little about myself: I'm a Linux head (Redhat advanced + Ubuntu).
Thank you for your your help.
If you realy want to delete touch wiz, you'll have to root your phone otherwise you can't get rid of touch wiz, however you can run a different launcher and having touch wiz on your phone.
Hi Viletung. In WebOS, it takes me about 30 seconds to root the phone.
Yet that retains all the phone settings unchanged, while allowing me to install packages, manipulate data, etc. Is it the same thing with SGS2?
I guess my question is: is it recommended to root the phone? I'm curious if most of Android users root their phone. I know I rooted my Palm Pre/Pre2 phones 5min after I got them. I read on the Internet that certain ROM's are built on stock Gingerbread (without TouchWiz), allowing the phone to save on battery and run much smoother with less used resources. Obviously, if you install a new ROM it will void the warranty.
I'm at a point where I'm learning the basics, so any advice is appreciated.
Hello!
I've installed Lite'ning rom 1.5, which has root access. And to flash it takes about one minute!
When I got this phone, I knew it was possible to root my phone, but I was scared that I would screw something up and break the device.
Now, it's about one month after I got this phone and I must say after rooting the device, deleting some standard Samsung **** (Social Hubs etc..), my SGSII isn't draining battery as it used to do before I deleted some stuff. (Including TouchWiz)
But I have also a JIG, to reset the custom kernel counter, just incase I need my warranty back.
So my final conclusion is; I can't life without root! I like to edit the system icons (battery-, wifi icon and much more).
If you have any questions, I'll try to help you
Rooting, yes do it. It's easy, does no harm, and opens up neat options.
Just get Villainrom which is updated to version 2.0. It's built on android 2.3.4, fixing the 2.3.3 battery drain bug (which occured on all phones running 2.3.3).
If you want your stock gingerbread experience, there is a rom out there which tries to replicate this, but I recommend using a 'better' rom with a custom launcher mimicking Gingerbread. Since there's not a lot of difference than just a different launcher (home-menu).
Most dont root but most are not on XDA and dont know anything bar stock . I would guess most XDA users root .
I'm at a point where I'm learning the basics, so any advice is appreciated.
To a certain extent its been a learning curve for the devs as SGS 2 is different to SGS1 .Expect even more development as the days go by .

Thanks a lot guys for the info.

Thanks for the info. I want to have the latest version of Android, I don't really care about Gingerbread. How do updates work on Android (i.e. updating to Ice Cream Sandwich eventually)? On WebOS, updates are done automatically from your carrier or Palm/HP (if you had an unlocked phone like myself). Even if I rooted my phone, I would be able to update the phone firmware with a simple download and retain the rooted aspect of the phone.
About rooting, what did you used? I'm looking at Odin and SuperOneClick... is there something better/safer? One more time, thank you.
Official updates via Kies over PC only .
Rooting is usually lost on update .

Why don't you use it for a least a few seconds before ditching it, there's no aosp gingerbread anyway so you're stuck with it until cm7 comes along.
I want to root the phone and replace the ROM mainly because I heard that TouchWiz is running on top of current OS. I could disable TouchWiz, indeed. The issue is: I do not know how upgrades are performed into phone. From the above posts, I have to do it myself is not an automated download/install like WebOS does it.
So, if a new Android version is released, I have to download it myself? For example, my phone comes with 2.3.3 installed but 2.3.4 is released already. Will my phone ask me to download the latest version automatically upon release? I presume not, I have to download and install it myself. Using logic, that is done by either installing a ROM or getting the upgrade from mobile provider.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's correct, and is one of the main reasons people root their Androids so that when a new version comes out we can download it straight away and don't have to wait for the carrier to officially release it, which usually takes a lot longer than it does for the devs here to put something together. E.g. there are a few ROMs already in the dev forum based on 2.3.4, but there is not yet any official update.
Thanks guys much appreciated. I will probably have more questions, once I have the phone on hand.

Android phones get new updates over the air when available, just like web os. Only Samsung does their own thing which is different on the sgs2 than on normal android devices. .
Which is, providing updates through an unnecessary software suite called KIES. You won't see an update available message on your phone.

Just install a launcher fromthe Android Store. There's plenty of good ones like LauncherPro, GX Launcher, 7 launcher. Their all relatively good and fully functional.
OK, I got the phone (16GB model) today from FutureShop and played with it a bit. It is a great phone indeed...
Phone Info (might be useful for devs)
Network: Bell Canada
Model: GT-I9100M
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100MUGKG2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100MUGKG2-CL371789 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UGKG2
Now, on with the usual:
Bell bundled the phone with several crap apps like Self Serve, TeleNav GPS (how stupid is that on an Android), Remote PVR, etc.
I will follow your advice and use the phone for now as is, without any fancy stuff done to it (like a new ROM). I would like to get rid of the Bell proprietary apps (physical delete), let me know if is possible. I guess if the phone is rooted it should be easy, the trick is to know how to delete the apps from the phone.
Another question: How do I install the Samsung drivers, without installing the blotted KIES?
I looked for a clean package with SGS2 drivers only but I could not find anything... All I want is to go to Device Manager and point a directory.
I must admit that Android is a totally new experience, coming from WebOS. I'm pretty much lost, heh. I know I sound like a noob, so please forgive me if I ask some simple questions that I can get the answer with a search or just by reading the phone instructions (haven't had the time to read the documentation).

[Q] Full 100% Noob looking for a helpful person to explain things

Hello i know the title seems an awful lot like a dating website info but basically i have been researching androids and stuff for hours on ends and i do not understand the jargon!! i need some simple answers please
I have a Galaxy Ace and i hope someone can answer questions such as
what is rooting and what can it do?
what is updating firmware because i fink i should update to 2.3.5 but does this mean i cant root if i update?
what is custom ROMs and what can they do?
At what stage do i back up my phone e.g. before i root or after i root? before i update or after i update?
I will be very very grateful and plz dont direct me to other links because i have read hundreds of them and all of them explain in too much detail.
Thank You.
See here: http://droidlessons.com/what-is-rooting-on-android-the-advantages-and-disadvantages/ and here: http://www.androidauthority.com/roo...e-to-root-your-android-phone-or-tablet-10915/. Sorry , too long to explain.
Rooting is forcing the phone to allow you access to the internal files of the phone (like the root directory of a hard drive)
Once you have access to the root you can do things that neither android / your service provider wanted you to play with.
Change fonts, modify the teeny system images, allow programs to do (dangerous) system changes to your phone.
Changing the firmware is not something I've played with but, say your phone comes to you with version 1 on it, and version 2 is released in Japan. Well some of the cleverer out there pick and poke and make working versions and then put them up, sometime months before people like o2 orange vodafone have put them into testing / marketing / production / helplines etc.
I'm pretty sure that rooting can affect warranty.
Changing the firmware definately will.
IMO rooting was needed on my x10i before 2.3.3 came out as the Sony Ericsson stuff was eating battery life. Now, its massively sorted out. No need to root.
But I'm not much of a tinkerer

Just rooting alone WILL void your warranty. No flashing of roms is required.

You backup your device after you root but before you install a custom rom. To root your device, see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034145.
Warning: Do not attempt this until you fully understand the risks and you know exactly what you are doing.
thanx for da links and simple explanations
it helped me understand rooting alot more however custom ROM is still a grey area.. and when should i update to gingerbread.. before or after rooting?
i ask this because i'm seeing rooting similar as chipping a psp where you need the right official firmware before you chip it.. so i'm thinking i will need a certain firmware for a certain root.
also.. i was wondering which is the best overall firmware i should go to ; 2.3.3, 2.3.4, 2.3.5? i am thinking the 2.3.5 as it is the latest but new doesn't always mean best as it could have untested bugs etc.
Thank You

You should update to Gingerbread after rooting (with a custom rom). Custom roms are simply roms made unofficially (not from manufacturers or service providers) by developers. You could update to 2.3.7 with this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1263292. After you root and install a custom recovery, then you can start flashing roms.
google is your friend..use him
he wont hurt u
I am also curious about the new updates, i suppose it all depends on if the rom you have can handle it? I'm using coredroid on my HTC Sensation

[Q] Rooting My Samsung S WiFi Player 5.0

Hi Guys,
I'm running Windows XP 32-bit, and I'm thinking of rooting my Samsung Galaxy S Player 5.0.
Here is the Model:
YP-G70CW/TPA
It has a hardware middle button, so I assume it's international.
I would have liked to have posted this in the Dev section, but the forum won't allow me, so I'm posting here.
Just wondering, is it painless to do, 'cause I don't want to brick my machine...
I have Kies installed, as well as SuperClickOne 2.3.3. As I just got it today, maybe I should tinker around with it a bit, before I root it, eh?
Please let me know! Thanks! If there's anything cool I should look at with this thing, please let me know as well!
Thanks sooo much in advance!
Scheherez
Have you read through this thread? LOTS of information/experience there.
For me, I used superoneclick (on Froyo) and DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit (on Gingerbread).
Since your device is new, may be you can check your firmware version first and let us know if you have a very new firmware. As there is short supply of clean stock firmware . Go to Settings->About device and see what version you have. This is also an important piece of information when something goes wrong.
It is new....Gingerbread 2.3.6
Is it true that there isn't a root for this yet? I heard that an exploit was patched up...
Cha...wouldn't mind trying to root it. I'll check the other threads and see what I can dig up.

Check out the Dev section for custom roms... they come pre-rooted and so far, they seem quite solid. The one I am using (see my signature) is GB2.3.6.
Help!?!?!
I was wondering after search google, bing, and yahoo all I can seem is how to root too 2.3.5 on the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0. I was wondering has anyone worked on getting Android 4.0 or Android 3.0 OS for the Galaxy Player.
Just fyi this would not have belonged in the developers section

[Q] Need help

Hi, I have a Galaxy S3 GT i9300. I ordered it online, probably came from Germany since it came with a bunch of paper in German.
Anyway, I live in Portugal, and my carrier is TMN, and I'm really confused on how to root it, and unlocking the bootloader, which I don't know if it's really necessary or not, and then the ROM, which I'll bring up in a moment.
I updated all the way up to 4.1.2 now this is what I want to know:
1. The easiest way to root, I have questions about this cause there are so many ways, and I don't know which one is the best, or the right one cause I don't know if it's unlocked or not, but I'm guessing it is since I'm using a TMN (portuguese carrier) Sim card.
2. Do I need to unlock bootloader? If so, what's the easiest way?
3. Now I'd like to know of a stable ROM, preferably with 4.2.1, or 4.1.2, also I'd like to know if there is any way I could keep the Samsung Apps, and if not, if there is a way to get them back. All in all, I want a clean, fast and stable ROM.
Thank you all.

i would have thought you would root it exactly the same as you would with all other i9300 devices, with cf auto root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273) however it doesnt install a custom recovery which you need to install roms. for that a good option is phillz touch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953) which is based on cwm after rooting while on android 4.1.2 there is normally a red exclamation mark in the top left corner on boot. this is due to a new bootloader which sammy introduced to help them find phones that have been rooted and sent in for repair. the way arround this is to download the old ice cream sandwich bootloader (i dont have the link but im sure you can find it, i forgot where i downloaded it from sorry ) you may not need this or not be bothered about this so its your choice as for rom it depends on weather your looking for vanilla android or a samsung based rom. however there are no perfect rom it is purely based on your own opinion although a widely used and stable vanilla rom is cyanogen mod (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779426) and most sammy roms are stable as they are not really altered much from stock however i use android revolution and have had no issues with it (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334). hope i helped in some way and i hope that what i said isnt too confusing thank you for reading
why does everyone want being spoonfed? what happened to good ol' searching? you're asking the most basic questions, do you really think they haven't been answered?
and asking for a clran/stable/good rom is against the rules

Help with this awesome tablet

Greetings everyone
I have this awesome tablet for my young son who loves to watch YouTube kids
The current FW which is an OFW will not permit the DL of YouTube kids I think due to compatibility issues etc.
I ask anyone to advise on how to load a CFW or something to allow me to run YTK and other items. Obviously I would need android 5 or higher.
Where could I find step by step instructions to do this? I am not sure of the detailed ways so I am needing patience from you.
I would appreciate all the help, so will my son
Thank you
Have you tried rooting it? What model is your tablet - 10.1?

Try the 7.1.2 Nougat Rom
I prefer Nougat without gapps and overclock the CPU to 1400 MHz.
https://www.google.nl/amp/s/forum.x...elopment/rom-android-7-0-nougat-t3471350/amp/
Good luck
I have the 10.1 GT-P 7510 I had XDA root it for me through their 1 click root system because I didn't want to take the chance on messing anything up because you read so much online about people bricking devices trying to root them. I also have kind of the same question, I have an old version of Netflix on mine that runs perfect but would like to go to a newer version, and I would also like to install kodi or xbmc on this tablet so I can take it with me on trips and be able to watch movies. after extensive searching I was able to find out that supposedly kodi 14.2 helix will work on this tablet, but trying to find it is essentially impossible, and when you do find the file it always seems to be broken in some way and wont work, supposedly there is a program called SBMC which is a fork of kodi for this device, but can't find that one anywhere. so my question is this because I am so new to this rooting thing. My tablet is already rooted with Super SU and I would like to know where I could look to get instructions how to install the nougat 7.1 rom or even a different rom to be able to go to some newer apps at this point I have been a little timid about doing too much because at least Netflix is working, and the xda tech told me not to factory reset it update it and a few other things, and a few other things because then it won't be rooted. any help in this will be very much appreciated and please feel free to move this post if it is in the wrong area and I apologize it is my first time posting. I will say this though it was well worth the 40.00 to have xda root it for me because it can be a bigger process than people think depending on the device the guys are awesome.
Rick
I also have a 10.1 GT-P 7510(wifi) 32g. The P7500 and the P7510 are basically the same and use the same firmware. I've had mine rooted for a long time. I use Kingoroot because it's easily replaced with Supersu. As far as ROMs go I've had only difficulties. What I can tell you is that for myself this has been a little difficult up til possibly just recently. There are many ROMs available here at XDA, most of them were unstable. The 7.1 Nougat, https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-10-1/development/rom-android-7-0-nougat-t3471350, looks promising but I haven't got CWM recovery to flash the zip without giving me a "No File_Contexts warning. If I could get a tar.md5 ROM I would use Odin3 in a heartbeat. Version 1.85 is the one I use most and thats just to undo the softbricks, by flashing in the original firmware. If you live in the US its this, https://www.androidlegend.com/update-samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-wi-fi-p7510-with-ics-4-0-4-uelpl/. Run that through Odin if you ever get stuck in bootloop crash the tab, pretty much anything but a hardbrick. The 8.0 Rom I'm waiting for the developers to complete.
