Twitter/Facebook clients with custom columns? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok. So up until now I have been using TweetDeck (or rather TweakDeck -- it's improved counterpart) and I guess I can still use it for a bit but Twitter has announced that the Adobe Air, Android, and iOS versions will be discontinued and will be removed from their app stores by May. There isn't a chance that just keeping the apk around will suffice though because apparently the app relies on depreciated APIs as well. What I'm looking for is a Twitter/Facebook client that will support custom columns to be added. I had 3 on mine. One for a work feed with very little activity (they post very specific updates) and a couple of other people that I want to watch that would of gotten lost in the noise of my news feed otherwise. I'm not finding any clients other than TweetDeck/TweakDeck that provide this. Can anyone provide me with any suggestions?
Thanks.
Source (app being discontinued): http://tweetdeck.posterous.com/an-update-on-tweetdeck
P.S. - I'm willing to take a Twitter only client with the custom columns since I only used it on that end but it becomes a pain since I've already gotten into a trend of reposting some twitter items onto my facebook profile for visibility and having just one app makes it easier.

Plume is worth checking out

You could try Ubersocial for Twitter.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twidroid&hl=en
It has the ability to cross post to facebook as well.
This is a very good app, and is my go-to app for the twittersphere.

Trying Plume and Scope right now, and I believe I've tried Ubersocial in the past
Any app that lets you have one unified timeline that displays both Twitter AND Facebook posts at the same time? Plume wants them to be separate columns, and Scope wants to add additional 'social content' from places like Reddit, The Verge, and ThinkGeek into my timeline

All horrible
I've tried the following:
HootSuite
Plume
Scope
and they are all terrible. They contain much too much crap, they all want me to register with THEIR service (I need more accounts like I need a hole in the head), but worst of all, they don't allow me a single-column view of both Facebook and Twitter. Arguably the best feature of TweetDeck/TweakDeck. Also, they all have ads, and they're all annoying.
I honestly don't know what to do. I've been searching for a client ever since the original announcement, but I haven't been able to find anything. At this point I'm considering just writing my own. I'm not going to say "how hard can it be?", but as a software developer by trade, it's not just idle speculation. I think the hardest would be getting the Twitter and Facebook APIs in line. No ads, no registration, no bull****.
Edited to add: Mind you I don't *want* to have to do this, so any suggestions would be preferable.

Yeah, Plume seems like the best alternative, and it lacks significant features. I can't see every column status all at once, can't customize individual column notifications, and can't add users to their own column. May have to add requests to their support page. But I'm just using TweakDeck until it stops functioning. Apparently Facebook has already stopped working, so I haven't even seen Facebook updates for awhile. Lol. Hate when there's not that one perfect solution.

I still see facebook updates in TweakDeck. Occasionally, on the desktop version (0.38.2), the facebook updates won't come in, but a restart or two (of the application) usually solves that.

Bump. Anyone find any good clients that allow custom columns? The next best thing I've found so far is Scope Beta.

So Tweetdeck stopped working for everyone, right? Want to make sure, cause I don't want to let go. Lol. Thought it was supposed to end in May, so at least I got a couple more months out of it. Will have to try Seesmic. Didn't stack up when I tried it a couple years ago. Hootsuite looks good, but still can't find one that adds a single user's timeline *and* per-column updates.

I'm looking for this exact same thing too! After TweetDeck stopped working, I immediately Googled and found TweakDeck, which is basically the exact same thing. Worked great, until the past week or so. Guessing it's dead again, but this time I didn't have any luck finding a good copy.
So yeah, I'll try that Scope Beta out, is it on PC too perhaps?

Unfortunately there's no desktop version. But I think TweetDeck for desktop is still up. I think only the Android version is dead. I don't think the desktop version of TweetDeck allows for custom Facebook columns though.

Ah yes my bad, Desktop version still works, very nice. I was just using a very outdated version.
Haven't tried Scope yet on Android, all I want is the lists tbh, I don't use facebook colums or so. I just want a much better overview of all the people I follow, and I'm currently doing that with lists.

If you want just Twitter lists then Plume is your best bet. It's what I've been using. It works like a dream and allows you to have columns for your lists. It's also got a nice clean modern UI.

Wondering if anyone discovered anything new since the last post? Looking for custom columns for Facebook specifically that allows for custom updates.

[APP] FBM - The best Faceboook client I've used

I wanted to share an app I found. It's free on the market (there's also a donate version). It's an incredibly smooth Facebook client. It has a nice UI and notifications (with a wide range of refresh intervals). Best of all, it seems really light on battery. In my opinion, it's worlds ahead of anything else available. Let me know what you think.

Hmmm... I don't allow "anything" permissions to do anything on or with my Facebook. If you choose "Allow None" it puts you in a loop consistently asking you for the same permissions. Just not going to happen with me. I'll stick with the standard one.
Why does this app look so close to the official app? I mean REALLY close.

Haha after googling the package name this is the first thing that popped up. This is actually my app so thanks!
The app FBM is just a wrapper for "touch.facebook.com" that has been tweaked and had a few additional features added. I've actually just published an update which will hopefully fix the notifications bug (which have been a bit intermittent for some users). I still have a fair bit of work to do with the photo uploading and sharing but unfortunantly due to work I don't get to devote nearly as much time as I would like to towards it.
@Cozmo1 - the permissions thing is a little annoying and one day I'll get round to tidying it up. I added that loop in when I added the "Upload Photo" feature so that I didn't have to deal with different permission sets between users. Some of the permissions are not even used such as the access data 24/7 one but when I first wrote it I thought I might use it.
Anyway, thanks for the mini-review Simba501 If anyone has any issues just PM me.
I suppose I'll give it a go. Thanks for sharing

Kind of a [Q] / A better twitter app.

Okay I use twitter a lot and have around 39,000 followers and it makes it hard to keep up with everything. So I use listing to track important things, on iOS I used an app called Twitbird, and it keeps track of lists and searches in a similar way to an rss reader, and shows the number of updates per list along with mentions etc. Also when you enter the list it starts at the exact point you left off at so there's no wasted time scrolling through hundreds of updates just to scroll back up.
Now I have not been able to find an app like this for Android anywhere! So is there any that exist? How hard would it be to create one? Or am I pretty out of luck and will have to keep whipping out the old Iphone?
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum I'm rather new here.
Did you try tweetdeck? It does support lists.

Yes I did try tweetdeck but it doesn't support lists in the same manner of tracking how many tweets have been added to the list and it doesn't start you where you left off reading. It's very frustrating not being able to keep track of my twitter without the old Iphone, its inferior in every other way. There are is also another app that I used to use called "echofon" which didn't have the features I loved from Twitbird but it informed you of any mentions when your tweets where re-tweeted or favorited so when I paired the two together it was great.
I've tried adding my lists to a rss like Google Reader but twitter makes sure that's close to impossible -_-
Ok. I tried some apps, but none of them supports the functions you are looking for. Lists yes, but nothing else.
But since I read your first post...I have to say that I would like to have those features too as Im using twitter mainly for news.
So if you find something, please come back here and tell me about

Hovernote: Floating notepad for Tablets!

Hey guys, just found a new app called Hovernote for $.99 in the playstore:
'It's simply a note app that hovers over whatever you're doing. In a world where it's necessary to launch a full-screen app on a ten inch device to jot down three words, Hovernote is a godsend. You can have multiple notes open, copy, paste and share from them, and even use the app on phones/tablets"
The more apps like these we get, the more I can appreciate what Android brings to the table!

Currently, no. I might do one in the future, but for now you can purchase the app and try it out for about 10 minutes; Google Play has a 15-minute return window in which if you don't like an app, you can have your purchase refunded (more accurately, never charged) via a button on the app's page.
great app..just purchased
It's funny how I and another person who commented on the Android Police post about the floating app library were just hoping for someone to make a floating note taking app and a day or 2 after, there we have it!
Too cool. Bought it in a heartbeat. Thanks dev!
Got this app and I love it. I works over everything, video, office, browser. Swiftkey is active on it so spellcheck is also available. Nice.
To the author;
New features that I'd love to see. A widget instead of status bar notification and direct text file save.
Thanks!

Hi!
Just so you know, I released an update yesterday that includes:
text file read/write
window transparency
an option to turn off the notification that appears after you close the last note
I'm not too sure about using a widget, since you can only access those from the homescreen... maybe I could display a list of recently opened files in a widget eventually, though.
I've gotten some feedback on there being too many notifications, so I'll see if I can come up with some alternative means (configurable, because I don't want to force it on people) to select individual notes.

Love the app. There is a method to get it free out there but after 3-4 days (when I got paid), I bought it to support the dev.
One thing I would like to see is an option to set a default open/save location. I usually save mine to sdcard/notes/.

Thanks for buying it. I didn't include any of the licensing or antipiracy libraries because it would be inconvenient, and the app is open source anyway; I definitely appreciate your purchase!
In the last version hovernote now remembers the last folder you were in when you opened or saved a file, and that's the default next time you open the file picker.

Is my GS3 cooler than my iPhone 4 ?? Help me MAKE IT COOLER :)

I know this might be the wrong question...? So I'm going to start with a simple disclaimer. No fighting or flaming here, I'm asking a serious question.
Here's the deal, I've been an iPhone user for 5 years since the original release in June 2007... I've owned every iPhone... ALL HAVE BEEN IN T-MOBILE USA SO I HAVE BEEN STUCK USING EDGE ON THEM ALL.
I tried another Android phone (LG O3D) before, but couldn't stick with it for some technical reasons... but I'll leave those discussions for the LG area.
So I paid high dollar and got myself a shiny new SGS3 for T-mobile to use my 4G and I did NOT get it on contract discount. So far I like it, its DIFFERENT from iPhone, and I'm missing a few of the jailbreaking tweaks I got used too over the years. And on the flip side, I'm really enjoying some of the cool features Android offer's out of the box.
So, can you guys help me make my GS3 as cool (or COOLER) than my iPhone?
Here's a quick list of a few things I miss on my iPhone (realize most of these are 3rd party apps from Cydia after jailbreaking)
Ringer X (set individual rings for each contact. MMS/SMS/EMAIL/PHONE CALL/ETC... and you can set ignore mute to create a ALWAYS RING WHITE LIST of Family members (for example), very nice.)
Lockscreen info (Shows current email headers, and has the ability to mark each read with a single click, useful for lots of emails, double clicking shows the entire email)
EMAIL IN GENERAL, I have NOT found any email app yet that can handle displaying desktop formatted emails properly for Android - and I can't understand why. Fit to Width seems to be a feature missing from android email apps, and either I'm crazy, or no one on Android has seen a fit to screen or fit to width email you can ZOOM in to and read the details on. VERY STRANGE TO ME.
There are a few apps that are cross platform that just work different on iPhone vs Android, and I liked the way they worked on iPhone so to me they seem "wrong" on android (not saying they are, just saying I'm not used to the way they work on this platform vs the other one) A good example is my security camera video program. Same app, same distributor, but the iPhone version has (for example) when you launch it - it takes you straight to the live view mode so you can see your cameras.. the android version doesn't have this ability - it wants me to navigate thru the menu's to click on LIVE VIEW, and then it doesn't retain the 4-way camera position everytime. Again, it just works DIFFERENT.
My car alarm app, on Android seems to crash 50% of the time while loading. This has been really annoying, especially as I walk thru the mall trying to start my car remotely. By the time I realize the app crashed, have to clear it from ram, re-launch wait again, well... you get it..frustration.
I'm really trying and wanting to LOVE Android - seriously. But obviously I need some guidance and maybe be shown the coolness of android over iphone... realize that after 5 years on iPhone, and having gone thru EVERY version of iOS since v 1.01 (or v1.02, I can't remember) I'm very familiar and comfortable with iOS - but by that same token, I'm bored too... I want something new and cool.
HELP ME PLEASE.
Many thanks in Advance.
I was a long time iOS user too (started with 1.0.3 in September 2007), I changed to Android about one year and a half now and nowadays I really prefer Android phones, Android has some really nice features. I can't help you with all the questions but I will try.
First of all, are you using the TouchWiz or have you tried other roms? TW has nice features but I really prefer a purer Android experience. With other roms you'll have freedom to personalize and change whatever you want on your phone, in my opinion this is one of the coolest things on Android. I believe CM9 (CyanogenMod9) is a good rom, but there are many other great roms available. If you want to try other roms you can look for it on the Development forums, and you can return to Samsung official rom when you want to.
1. To select specific ringtones you should look for your contact (People or dialer app), when you open it press the menu button and you'll see the option "Set ringtone".
2. I don't know any app to replace the 'lockscreen info', I believe something similar is coming to Android Jellybean, but you could use any app like 'Widget Locker' and use GMail widgets by now, it's not the same but should work.
For me the best email app ever is GMail... I got your point but I've never had any problems with it. I don't use any security camera or car alarm app on my Android phones, so I can't help you with this too, but there's a feature available on some roms (like AOKP) that should help you with this car alarm problem it's the 'hold back to kill' option, you just hold the back button and it instantly kills the crashed app. Although you can always long press the home button to see recent apps and then slide the crashed rom, it should kill the app from ram quickly.
If I remember any better options for this problems I will reply here, but I hope it helps you enjoy your new Galaxy SIII.

You can configure tasker and minimalistic text to display unread emails, missed texts, missed calls etc. Tasker is a little expensive if you're just looking for and widget with the number of unread emails since there are a ton of dedicated widgets for that, but tasker is a lot more flexible and you can configure it to do a lot of other things too like nfc actions.
Not sure if you've looked into these email apps...I don't use them but hear about their popularity. K-9 and Kaiten.

Well I'm not as knowledgeable as most of these guys when it comes to ask this android but I too just came over from a jail broken iPhone. But I've been using android like a mistress for over a year and came up with a few things:
Executive assistant is the closest app I found to replace Lock Info. But I don't use it anymore since I can drop down NC from lock screen to see what I missed. Gmail calendars can text you alerts.
Missed It allows you to create some pretty cool notifications in your launcher.
Prefixer allows you to alter your number dialed with default dialer. Works great for auto area codes or extended speed dial numbers...
I switch between Swype and Swift key
Good luck!

Pretty much all the "cool" features are in stock android. Edit contact with any ringtone should do it. Switch out the contact icon on the bottom (don't need it you can see contacts in the green phone icon)with gmail and It will be on your lock screen. This device is still pretty new so some of the app delvs need to catch up. Once you learn your way around Android you 'll see that JBing is nothing more than a theme in Android.
Have fun learning

as far as the ringtone thing, what I'm taking about specifically is with a jail break app called ringer x I am able to set ringtones for a contact call, sms, email. 3 unique tones for 3 unique actions from the same contact.
Plus you can tell it ignore mute, and no matter what your ringer setting is, it will make noise (ring) at the volume you set in the contact. It's pretty great, especially for those of us with kids.
And I agree android is a learning curve.

Pull the phone out of the box. Now it is already cooler than an iPhone.

Yeah hold the phone near mouth and say IGNORE or put the phone face down when ringing or pull up the curtain and select a ignore text reply.

I thought I saw a built in black list? And I think tapping power button ignores call?

Lol. Out of box, the S3 is already cooler than any iPhone. Any attempt at making it 'better' is just an extra plus

Guy's these comments & posts are useless. This was meant to be a serious thread, and not a thread for fan boys of either camp.
Please keep the replies on topic and helpful, or keep them to yourself. :good:

I answered the OP Question in the title of his thread. Sorry, was that not allowed? lol.

[Q] Group Messaging

Does anyone know if it possible to enable Group Messaging on the default messaging app? I tried searching the forums and looking through all the settings, but can't seem to find anything. What I mean is having everything in One thread.
Just type several numbers/names and you're good to go. I don't know if the participants will end up in one "thread", or if they'll end up in their own though. I'm afraid you'll have to try it out yourself Please report back with the result, so we all know how it works.

"group messaging" as in one thread doesn't exist. They each come in on their own thread. Looking around a lot last night I did, however, find an app that I am using as a full alternative to the native messaging app. Unlike WhatsApp and all those others, this isn't a chat service or anything along those lines. It was built to switch from the default messenger. Has full group messaging and a bunch of features. Not to mention free. Would highly recommend. Or just put cyanogenmod!

Brilliant recommendation!
Thanks!
Everything about it is perfect (except for the ugly icon), and as u say, addresses all the shortcomings of native SMS.

My only complaint is the icon as well. After using it for longer I still absolutely love it.
