[Q] Confusion about rooted GT-I9100 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, as you can (or cannot) see, I'm a new guy here. Not just here at xda, but I'm pretty much a newbie to android as well. I've gotten a S2 last summer from a friend in Asia to replace my ancient Nokia and it was rooted when I got it through snail mail. I've just rolled with it until now when I realized that the phone could probably do better if I did some upgrading and tweaking here and there after seeing articles about Cyanogenmod and other stuff that came from rooting the phone. From there comes my problem, I'm totally clueless about android. I only know that my phone is rooted since it has superuser, but I have no idea what kind of kernel/ROM it has on it and how I can go about improving it. I'm still stuck on version 2.3.3 because I have no idea on how to upgrade and didn't want to carelessly fiddle with it and break it. So I'm hoping you guys could give me some pointers on what I have as of right now, and what to do in regards to getting things up to date.
The specs (?) of my phone are:
Model: GT-I9100
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband ver: I9100XXKE4
Kernel version: [email protected] #2
Build number: QUENS.ROOT.FIT.ZSKE7
I don't think my phone is attached to any carrier either, if that's normal for the international version.
PS: I apologize if my question and crappy explanation angers some fine and outstanding gentlemen here, but I'm afraid I cannot help that because of my utter confusion and cluelessness.

AW: [Q] Confusion about rooted GT-I9100
So the first question you have to ask yourself is: Do you want to stay on stock (but rooted) or do you want an custom rom.
You can try to connect you phone per USB to your computer, then run Kies there and look if it shows you an available update. If the phone is from china you can have the Sammy JellyBean 4.1.2 update. If Kies does not show you an available update then the reason is your rooted stockrom. You have then to "call" (It doesn't call anybody but you have to enter it in the Phone app) #*1234#, minimize Superuser or SuperSU and look in the window wich appeared for your CSC. In my case there is written "i9100DBTLS7" the important thing is the DBT wich is my region Code. So if you find this code go to: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/ and search there for your region code in the country option. Download one of the Roms and flash it with Odin (there are some Guides online. READ THEM CAREFULLY!!!) So then you should have an completly stock rom on your phone. Connect it to Kies again to see if a newer Rom is available and update if there is one. To root it simply follow this Guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
So this is the way to get the newest available stock rom for your phone. If you want to go custom now you can use the guides written by the Developers of the Rom you are looking for.
I hope thats what you were looking for.

Very usefull and detailed information:thumbup: I only want to add that OP needs to do some serious research to learn more about flashing, rooting, firmware differences and stuff, before he/she tries something

I second Donnie Sins. Watch a few videos to get an idea and DO NOT FLASH ANY ROM/KERNEL/FIRMWARE/PIT FILE THAT IS NOT MEANT FOR I9100 MODEL! You have to be very careful with that. Also learn how to make backups like for EFS folder and nandroid backup. Make a nandroid backup always before flashing anything so that if things go wrong, you can get back to from where you started!

Like you, I too was once confused and overwhelmed by the world of Android.. But after a lot of reading over here at xda, finally got the hang of some important stuff related to rooting and flashing, and most importantly my phone!
For newbies like yourself, this is a good thread to get you started:

Hi. Thanks for the help (Which extends to everyone else as well). I checked through Kies and my phone can't update through that. So then I went on to check the CWC by calling the *#1234# number and it showed me that my CWC is I9100OZSKE7. I proceeded to look it up on the site that you posted and found that it was a Taiwan/Hong Kong region (OZS). So now I'm wondering if I should just choose the 4.1.2 version and flash it? And if I do choose to flash it, is there any other alternative than using Odin? Because I saw that Odin has a chance of bricking the phone.
I also have another question regarding to superuser. My superuser binary seems to be very out of date, and whenever I try to update it, it fails at downloading a new binary.
I have the 2.3.1-ef version installed and the latest as superuser tells me is 3.1.1.
Finally, what is CWM? I have ROM Manager installed on my phone and it seems to be related to CWM.
@shahrozeumar: What is nandroid and efs backup?
PS: Sorry if I look like I'm jumping all over the place with my questions. Right now my top priority is to sort everything out on my phone and get a good understanding of it.

you should go for the custom ROMs, preferably 4.0.3 ICS or 4.1.2 JB, you can find already rooted ROMs out there very easily.-

Hey guys. Thanks to the help of everyone who posted in this thread and some major reading, I've managed to update to 4.1.2, root it, and gain a grasp of the basics. I also tried to install CWM after installing 4.1.2, but it just caused a bootloop. Thankfully I made a backup so I just had to restore back to when I started and repeated the process again.
So here's the thing. Why can't I install CWM without it causing me to go into a boot loop? I looked around and it seems that nobody's had this problem.
Also, I'm not quite satisfied by the current stock rom. While it does run smoother and faster than 2.3.3, I find myself unaccustomed to the new setup and somewhat disappointed at the lack of any major improvements other than the aforementioned smoothness and speed. Widgetlocker doesn't let me use my lock anymore, and I can't seem to get the phone to connect with mass storage mode automatically. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should flash to that offers customization and function? As it stands right now, I can't install CWM on my phone and it seems to impede me from creating a fallback and from flashing to any custom roms.

Are you sure you're flashing the latest cmw?
You didn't notice major improvements? Comparing to what? GB?
Did you flash philz kernel after you flashed JB?
Keep trying, you're on the fastlane.

I didn't notice a lot that was different from GB aside from the faster battery drain and new UI.
Anywho, I've flashed to philz kernel. Now I have another problem. Google Play keeps crashing automatically for some reason before I flashed to the philz kernel, but now after I flashed to the new kernel, Google Play crashes when I try to update superSU. The new philz kernel won't back up either because of an error in the booting image.
Just to clarify what I did. I rooted my phone using the method mentioned here using Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed and then flashed to philz kernel with the instructions form this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877270 and used this package PhilZ-cwm6-XXLS8-FOP-4.01-signed since my kernel code seems to be XXLS8.
EDIT: And after all that, I seem to have gotten myself into a bootloop again after using the recovery.

You really need to reflash > factory reset > flash philz.

1. Yes you can flash the latest 4.1.2 when it is available for your region.
2. There is is nother option to flash these files than with Odin. But I can tell you if you do everything right don't uplug the cable and don't shut off your PC while flashing you should be fine.

Thanks a lot guys. I've finally got a hang of this. Moved on to trying cyanogenmod, it's great, but kinda buggy on a few places. So yeah.
Again, thanks a lot.

Please help as I am extremely confused.
I have a new SG2. I did not root it.
Every time I restart my phone I see an Yellow Triangle with exclamation mark.
Now, as I understand, everyone who gets the triangle has rooted the phone.
Is there something wrong with my SG2?
Kies shows this info:

Thanks.

Does your phone boot? If it boots up, the yellow exclamation point is just when you flash a non signed ROM from Odin. If it doesn't boot and stays at the yellow exclamation, something might be wrong and you need to factory reset to try and fix it...

Did you pay to get it unlocked? If you did... I'd speak with them first, they probably rooted your phone and ran the Helroz unlock version. Then get your money back.

Or send them a lawyers letter asking for £500, because they have invalidated your warranty by rooting the phone without your consent.

My phone boots normal, I have restarted my phone several times now.
I did not pay to get it unlocked. However, it is possible that the handsets sold here (in Qatar) are unlocked. How do I confirm this. As far as I understand I still have warranty.
Anyway, coming back to the original question, is this good or bad (not considering the warranty factor).

I'm pretty sure that when Samsung has not locked the bootloader flashing a custom rom won't affect the warranty. It may depend on the system of your country though. Here in Finland it does not affect the warranty, or at least did not affect on my previous phones.

Apart from esthetics and the void warranty, it really doesn't matter at all.
It has no "technical effect", it only tells that a non-Samy-signed kernel had been flashed.
Also, there is a list of ways to get rid of it again:
- USB jig
- flash a stock Samsung kernel again via an PC app called "Odin"
Indeed, USB jig works fine and erase download information.
With the jig : current binary is a Samsung official one and custom binary download is set to no.

Ok. I am a pure newbie with this. I am still searching for some explanation on 'kernel' and 'ROM'. I will be most grateful if you could point me to the right direction:
Is my phone rooted?
If no, then I need to root via ODIN and 'flash an insecure kernel' and then use SuperOne Click. This is required to 'flash a custom ROM'
If yes, then I just need to 'flash a custom ROM'.
I have read and re-read the guides posted on rooting/flashing but maybe I am missing something. Can I use any 'insecure kernel' or custom ROM?
Thanks a lot again.
Root is not required to flash a custom rom. The custom roms install kernels that are rooted themselves.
First off, there is no "need" to flash a custom ROM, everything works fine on a stock ROM, even rooting.
The "kernel" the lowest, innermost "core" of the OS, it's the part started at boot and taking care of the rest of the OS to boot up.
Also, by now, you don't need the SuperOneClick route anymore, there's more easy/faster ways by now with kernels that already bring and do everything you need.
You might want to take a look at CF-Root or maybe even my own kernel I just fished
Those take care of everything needed for getting root access, besides flashing the kernel via Odin, nothing more needs to be done.
Thanks a lot!! That was really helpful.
Am I wrong in assuming that a custom ROM would take care of the battery drain issue? or just using a kernel (such as yours) would do the trick. I only wanted to change the kernel/ROM for battery.
Also I looked at your kernel.
Download a build of my kernel that matches your FW/current kernel version und unpack the downloaded archive.
You will get a .tar file. Don't extract that, you need this .tar.
(go to Settings -> About this phone -> look at "Kernel Version", this will tell you what kernel build you need)
My Kernel Version is : 2.6.35.7-I9100JPKF1-CL277308 [email protected]#2
so what build do I need?
Thanks again.

NO a custom rom may help but it may not .
User apps biggest battery drain .

AS THE MAN SAYS.
The kernels are compiled pretty universal, so the KE7 one should work on most 2.3.3 based FWs and the KG2 one on most 2.3.4 ones.

Got it. Thanks.
Although I decided not to flash Kernel/ROM as I could not find any strong evidence yet on reduction on battery drain after flashing. So beats the purpose, I guess. Will keep looking for the evidence though!!!

The kernel will indeed very likely not affect battery drain.
The ROM however could. There's a lot of people saying on the 2.3.4 based FWs (XXKG1/2/3) the battery lasts longer.
Though, there is no "bulletprove prove" of that yet.

Thanks. Although, I still haven't figured out why does one need to flash a new kernel? I understand it would make sense for developers such as you for more control etc. but for an average user does it give more visible benefits?

Depends on the kernel, what's put in.
CF-Root as well the one I am working on myself for example take care of everything that's needed for rooting after being flashed, no additional actions by the user needed.
It also comes with some more options for customisation, like bootscripts, custom bootanimation, sound and logo.
Ok. Will wait for the KF1 you are making and try it. Would you also suggest a custom ROM.

Is this right?

Hi, I got my galaxy s2 in the post a week ago, but it was second hand, apparently unwanted upgrade. It looks like they've possibly upped the kernel, but definitely rooted it. I very seriously doubt there's anything to worry about though. Looks like someone did the work for you
Nothing wrong there, you're rooted. If you're worried you could flash a different kernel! Easy as pie if you follow the threads available
Hi, but root checker says that I don't have root same with set cpu. Also, can i update it ota, to the new 2.3.4 when it comes out officially please? Also, I rooted my old htc desire, and then I wanted to root my galaxy s2 when ever here was a stableish nightly for ice cream sandwich, but will the fact it hasn't got an official kernel obscure me from flashing using odin to flash roms, other kenels and installing custom recovery, or because it says it isn't rooted, will it obscure be from rooting. Also are there any risks please? I am new to galaxy s2, I am used to the simplify of rooting the desire. thanks, also how do you know it's rooted?
Thanks very much for your help

Also, could you please be able to tell be, where in the procedure of rooting is my phone to be able to root, flash if someone has started the work for me please? I am just scared that if I start to mess around with trying to root it, and if someone has started the rooting the process, I might brick it. I don't know if I have explained this very well.
I should have done this before, but when it is so long I didn't think it would work, but I typed in the kernel in the search box and it came up with this, I think it may be stock and completely normal after all: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14593753
I got mine from Orange and the kernel was KE2. I think that KE7 is an official firmware, but the "root" in the name suggests it's already been rooted. Have a look in your apps for CWM or Superuser. If they're there then it's probably Chainfire's root that has been applied. If not then maybe they just flashed a stock kernel before sending it to you.
Either way, following the instructions in Chainfire's root thread will not brick your device (as long as you do follow the instructions )
It's actually quite hard to brick it. You really need to start pulling cables or stopping odin when you're flashing to do that.

[Q] Questions about rooting firmware updated from Kies 2.0

Searched around a lot about this, and just really need some clarification.
When connecting to Kies I'm prompted about the latest firmware PDA:KG5 / phone:KG1 / CSC:KG1 (XSG.) Is this the official release of 2.3.4 or 2.3.5? and what is the proper term to call this update by, KG5 or KG1 (not sure if you use the PDA # or the phone/CSC # to state which firmware Im using during online conversation.)
Also I am currently rooted on PDA:KF3 / Phone:KF1 / CSC:KF2 (XSG.) Which is 2.3.3. I know I will loose my root / super user status if I do the firmware update via Kies.
If I do update to the KG5 firmware listed above, what is the best method to root? If the firmware update I listed above is 2.3.4, Can I use the same method as listed all over the place to root the leaked version of 2.3.4 that came out in early July (I believe it was KG3?) The method is pretty much Orion & super one click.
If the firmware update I listed above is 2.3.5, what is the best way to root it? All in all, I'm not sure if you can root a stock release from Samsung the same way as a leaked version.
Thanks in advance everyone, this is my first Android phone after years in IOS so I apologize in advance if my question makes no sense. I'm doing my best!
Don't get too much confused.
It's an official release and you should update. No way it will be 2.3.5. Then you could use Chainfire's kernel for root. Normally we quote the PDA version as firmware, so you could quote it as KG5.
Link to CF kernel thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Regards.
Thank You very much for the clarification.
I will try that out.
I would flash with odin, kies might brick your phone. by the way, you can flash cf kernel again, but first install original firmware. It must be three parts and a pit file,
Repartition box should be checked.

Hold on mate, Kies would brick your phone?
Well well well, I haven't heard this ever and I don't think it is true. Bricking a device is not an easy thing. Well I like Odin too, that's because of it has some other connection/drivers problem sometimes, but 'Bricking'? Nah, Negative.
The other thing is, I'd always recommend update via Kies if the user is new comer and have less idea about upgradation, he could do some mistakes in Odin, but never in Kies.
Regards.

Thanks ithehappy. I looked hard to find this thread and glad for it. I was about to flash from KF2 to the new one offered by the updated Kies software - firmware version KG5 in my case. Atm I have a rooted phone and replaced the stock XXKF2 kernal back using ODIN successfully using the one offered here somewhere on XDA. (got rid of the yellow triangle issue on boot).
Do you think if I flash using Kies all will be right??? Just got nervous from what the other poster said... I am not overly interested in rooting again, It was mere experimentation that made me do it in the first place. Cheers & thanks for your time.
To mooksy
if you have replaced the unofficial firmware or kernal back to the original everything will be fine. The only problem you will have is that if you havent replaced all the non-official with official then kies wont recognise your phone anyway and you wont be able to update that way.

Thanks cooza, I have read the thread on here concerning the KD5 update and a lot of people make the process sound really confusing to say the least, obsessive IMHO . Is it worth the trouble updating the SGS2 right now? Afterall my phone is fine and I thought rooting would be some kind of epiphany but to me its just... (shrugs shoulder)

Please don't advise people to use PIT files and Repartition unless you are going to back them up with a replacement phone.
Please remember, most pple who come here are really not very experienced and don't really know what they are doing.

1. It would be the release of 2.3.4 as as the other on has not been leaked yet,
there is only one trial version in the CM7 but it is a work in progress.
2. You would call it by its PDA # KG5. CSC and Phone can be any
combination depend on which country you are in.
3. yes, after flashing you will need to reroot again.
4. Just use chainfire Kg5 root. You will not need to use super one click as
chainfire has done all the work for you.
use this thread for rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
5. you can root a stock version the same as a leaked version. You may have to
wait a day or so till chainfire has made a root for it. He is usually on top of
it as soon as someone sends him the kernal.
MOOKSY
If you are happy with your phone and your not much of a flasher or rom changer and all that then just stay as you are if your happy.Unrooting and flashing to the lastest via kies is also a good idea cos kies is an official update so can only bring good things, right. If you feel the need then re-root.Kies is always a safe bet if your new to updates and at least they are all offiall so if something did happen samsung would have to cover it while odin is an "at your own risk" deal.
COOZA
Sorry off-topic (ish) I read that you bricked two of your phones using tar files for sgs2 on sgs, did you manage to jig it back to life and with any success? I want to root again after using Kies for KG5 update. but now i'll use CF's work on here. After reading that other sites could result in potential disaster I think I was lucky , i too just googled a random site for the rooting kit.
Unfortunatly for me i damaged the bootloader so the jig wont work.Im going to have to find someone with a riff box jtag and see if that works.I hope its does.If i cant find anyone with one ill just have to buy it myself.Worth the money when its 2 phones that need to be done.My bricking came from a site that mixed up phones with other phones firmwares.Wont be going back there again and that was before i hooked up to XDA anyway. Now all my downloads are done from here as this a good site to be with.

How to root new stock update (UCLL6)

Does anyone know how to root the new official firmware release from AT&T last month? (4.0.4 UCLL6) From the one post in all xda I could find on the topic. (It was as a side note) it was said the only way is to use ExynosAbuse. (They said it like it was easily obtainable knowledge...) So I tried that and got now where, even though it says that it is expoitable. (

It has also been confirmed that this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181 method works as well.
And if it turns out no root is available for UCLL6, I could resort to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746181this method, correct?
You are the second person that has said the ExynosAbuse rooting method does not work with UCLL6. I'm not aware of any way to root that distribution at this time, so yes, you could install UCLE5 plus root.
My brother had he same issue with his Sprint S2 because the patched the exploit in the latest software release. I showed him the framaroot tool and it worked. It's listed to work on the i9100 but I've never tried it on our devices.

Neither of the exploits worked that were in framaroot worked unfortunately, I guess I am gonna attempt to do the other one I mentioned even though my computer doesn't play nicely with android phones for some reason even after I install the drivers (probably something to do with my brother thinking he knows best and ending random processes in task manager and killing startup processes)

I came across Phil's universal rooting method on the i9100 forums a few weeks ago: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794. In theory, shouldn't it work because it only injects Superuser and Busybox into the proper directory and doesn't touch anything else? I've been meaning to try it out, but I haven't have enough spare time dedicated to flashing back to stock and test it.

It's unknown. We can only speculate. There were many reports of damage from the leaks that led up to the first ICS release, UCLE5, but the UCLE5 kernel itself did not produce very many reports of damage. I only saw two reports that could have been memory damage due to the cap erase bug, and only one of those seemed to be even half way conclusive. So it is possible it was even fixed in that release.
UCLL6 appearantly fixes some of the other kernel problems that were present in UCLC3 such as the sleep of death, so it may very well be a clean kernel, but this can not be verified by the developers on xda without original source, which is not available.
It certainly would be the safest route to use a custom safe kernel. And as a bonus, the custom kernels are likely to perform much better than stock as well.

[Solved] Issue with WiFi

Hey there,
Alright so a couple of days ago my WiFi on my Samsung Galaxy S2 phone just started acting weird. By weird I mean the further away I am from my router (like 1 bar wifi signal - opposite end of the house) websites load, however if I'm pretty much next to it with a max bar wifi signal nothing loads (or sometimes they do load but take extremely long)
In short, the further away from router wifi works fast, whereas the closer I am wifi works slow or doesn't even load websites/applications at all.
So what's happening here?
Thanks,
Jason
PS: No I'm not capped, and no one was/is downloading anything when I conducted my tests.

I hope all those details help (if they're things there that I shouldn't be sharing to the public please tell me, so I can remove them). Also, I haven't tried the original factory Rom for this phone to see if that fixes the problem, the only issue I have is I forgot what version and such I'm supposed to use.
Ohh and I bought the phone in Australia, if that's any help.
Remove the FFC ID but the rest is OK Yep, doing a clean install of stock (with wipe) is the next step. Re: which stock rom to use, go to Samfirmware & use the pulldown boxes to choose device/carrier/country & find one for your carrier. Doesn't matter much whether it's ICS or JB (though don't flash 4.0.4 stock; use something else) as you're only doing it to test.
Before you go down that path though, you could try a 'dirty' (without wiping) flash of your current rom/kernel. Though probably unlikely to work, it's worth a try given going back to stock is a bit of a pain. You could also try some other custom kernels given WiFi drivers are in the kernel & flashing a new kernel (and fresh drivers as a result) might fix the problem if it's a case of the drivers being messed up.
It could also be something router-side causing it, but we'll look at the phone-side first before looking at stuff like that.

Alright, So I'm on the SameMobile Firmware site and am now using the drop down boxes, I chose Model: GT-I9100 - Galaxy S II and then I'm stuck with Product Code. What do I chose here? Do I chose Vietnam because the phone was made there or do I chose Australia (Optus) because I remember a Optus boot screen on the original firmware (and the Modem is the same as the Baseband version - I9100XXLS9)?

How do I flash my current rom/kernel? I'm still very new to this whole rom scene, I just go off what I see in videos :/
How do you flash your current rom/kernel again ? To be really honest with you (and I'm not saying this to offend you), if you're asking that question you probably shouldn't be messing with your phone in the first place.
The same way you flashed it in the first instance.
If you still really don't know how to flash a rom or kernel, you really need to read the threads stickied at the top of Q&A and also the guides/tutorials stickied near the top of General. I'm not about to regurgitate stuff like that purely because you're unsure of what to do when that stuff has been asked/answered here thousands of times over the past two years. Also, just doing stuff without understanding what you're doing can easily lead to a busted phone.
Re: which stock firmware to choose, it doesn't matter (as I said in my PP), I just said choose one for your carrier because that's what I'd do, if you had Optus firmware on it previously, you can go with that. It's not really of any consequence.
However...
You need to read all of my PP. I did say to try reflashing your current custom rom/kernel first because this will be quicker/easier than going back to stock.

Oh I know what you meant by flash, it's just my lingo that Is off. Dw I understand what you meant now.
Okay, I reflashed my current rom (which was SuperNexus 3.0 Build 1) and that didn't fix the problem any bit.
Okay, now that i've finished downloading the original firmware you say, "doing a clean install of stock (with wipe) is the next step". How exactly do I do a clean install? Does that mean wipe everything, un-root, I've never done this before?
You don't seem to be reading everything I've posted:-
