[Q] Unable to Root my GS3 i-565 (verizon) - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I have been trying to root my GS3 for many days now, searched everything I can to figure out what is going on, tried Mac & Windows and cannot get this thing to root. I am running 4.1.2, currently. I have attempted to do the Odin 3.07, ran that step by step and the process failed. I try to unlock the bootloader and everything tells me I need to have a rooted device. I continuously receive "Permission Denied" when trying to root, which I read means I need to change the r/w, which i haven't been able to do either. I used the Ninja aboot thing, that didn't work.
what am I doing wrong? Can someone help me?

I figured things out. I was unintentionally cutting corners. I took my time and made sure all files were downloaded fully and followed step-by-step. I am going to root someone's phone tomorrow.

[Q] cant obtain full root

So I just picked up a Thunderbolt, and am in the process of rooting it using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I went through all the steps and did everything correctly. Step three resulted in the phone rebooting like it should, but when I went to Rom Manager to "fix permissions", it says "error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" I'm assuming that means I didn't obtain full root...but am I safe to run steps 2 and 3 on that program again? It says on that thread do NOT redo step 1, but it says nothing about redoing step 2?
Also, I've downloaded Busybox and that didn't fix the problem. Titanium also says it cannot obtain root. Lastly, I've tried step 3 on the rooter several times, and it still does not work.
thanks for anyone that helps!
Reflash PG05IMG.zip through the recovery console. Easiest way to get there is to power off the device, press and hold volume down and the power button together until you see the recovery screen. It will search for the .zip file and load it, press volume up to start the update. Once it is finished, reboot the device and check for root.
does it work on the new release update 1.13.605.7

The thread clearly states what versions it will not work on, and if you got yours in The last few weeks.... Especially if you did the OTA update, that will NOT work. The only option I know of that works on the latest OTA updates is the method at the very top of the XDA development thread using ADB and the 3 zips that you download. It works. It works good, but you have to have your machine set up with the Android SDK first and have the HTC drivers that come with HTC sync. There's threads that explain setting all that up. Once done, its good to use ADB to connect to The phone and run some simple commands like getting the device serial number. If ADB can pull the serial number off the phone, you're good to go and proceed with the root.
They did change some things with the newest updates. Even some of the older manual rooting instructions don't work, like those on the theMikMik.com.
I'm having the same exact problem as bbuchho90 is. I did the OTA update recently, and my firmware version was 1.12.605.7, the instructions said it wouldn't work if your firmware version was 1.12.605.9 or over. After I unsuccessfully rooted it, my firmware version is 1.12.605.6. Also, despite not being rooted, I have S-OFF.
Also, I tried reflashing PG05IMG.zip like micompcs recommended, but that didn't work either.
DROIDLIFELIFE, I wouldn't do it, as that's what version I had and it didn't work.
Do you have super user in your app drawer?

I know I'm not the OP, and you're asking him this question, but since we have the same issue, I suppose I can answer for him. It is in my app drawer. I've been trying to root it the normal way for the last hour, but I'm still learning about adb.
It's not the fast or easy way, but it's the way that works and the way you'll get the best help in getting done if you have a problem.

[Q] Unrooting\updgrading problem on G2

So i looked everywhere and haven't been able to find a answer to this issue.
Last night got the OTA Gingerbread update. Wasn't thinking about it and went ahead and accepted it. Of course clockwork recovery made this not work. So today i looked to go through the process of either unrooting my G2 and restoring or installing the update manually. I have had no luck with either. When i try to unroot my phone, for some reason i cannot get the SU command to work. It says permission denied. (This did work when i originally rooted my phone) I have never installed any roms so i still have all stock android. I still have S-OFF so i tried the thread that explained how he did it manually. Did not work. From his guide it says I do not have the stock 2.2 update but i in fact do. I have version 2.2 of android. I really just want to update to gingerbread and move on my way. It would be nice to go ahead and unroot because i never really took advantage of it anyways but in the unroot guides I get stuck at either clockwork recovery wont flash the image and fails out or when i try to follow the guide on the unlockr for unrooting using a hex editor and when i try to export my image I get /dev/block/mmcblk0p17: cannot open for read: permission denied which the only fix was to get the SU command to work.
I am totally stuck so I am just leaving all the details i could leave. Thanks ahead of time.
I fixed this. Thank you!

[Q] Unrooted, Rooted...i dont know whats going on.

im using this through Verizon.
so i have been running the ICB 4.0.4 build that i got from a Verizon update (i think its called OTA when you get it that way?). before that i had whatever came on the phone. i rooted my phone and then i heard you cant get ICS with a rooted phone. so i unrooted it. or so i thought. i downloaded the ICS update when it came out and have been using it ever since. recently i have been wanting to root again. i heard that with the new update Verizon made it so in Recovery mode you could see if you are rooted or not. with the 0/0, 0/1 and 1/1. i tried rooting my phone again with "DooMLoRD_v2_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su". i kept getting errors. that files couldnt be found i believe it was. so i went into Recovery mode and checked. it was showing 1/1. so i used "DooMLoRD_v1_UNROOTING". and its still showing 1/1. now before i started trying to ROOT again i haven't had the SuperUser thing or any of that. anyway i have also tried to ROOT/UNROOT using "EternityProject EasyRootICS". and UNROOTing using "SuperSu". basically what im trying to do is i want to ROOT my phone again now that i have 4.0.4 legit from Verizon. any help would be appreciated.
edit:
just download RAZR Utility 1.8. worked with no errors. i also am able to boot up phone. but now when i go to Recover it still says 1/1 and i get some errors about the cache and a few folder. probably 10-15 total.
also how do i just root my phone with this app? its got so much stuff here i just dont understand.

I lost root on my TF201 after flashing Craig Gomez's us-tf201-jro03c-10.4.2.15-stock-deodexed.zip ROM. In addition to losing root access, I still had Superuser installed, and it would not grant superuser permission to anything I was trying to use to fix the problem, such as Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, GooManager, etc. Also, Superuser did not even have superuser permission, but could not be deleted in the File Manager. Another big problem is that I could not boot into recovery, and I could not downgrade to ICS.
After trying a number of possible solutions that I found on this and other sites, I discovered Urkel's Fresh Start 1.0.zip. Here's the post:
<http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32677560>
If you are at a dead end, I highly recommend that you give this a try! Your bootloader needs to be unlocked, but I had already done that when I was still using ICS. I'm not sure if the unlock tool available on the Asus site will work with JB. All you have to do is download the Urkel's Fresh Start zip file to your computer, unzip it to the same folder on your computer where you have adb and fastboot, add the JB ROM that you want to use to that folder, and rename the ROM file to system.blob. You'll also need to install the drivers on your computer so that it can send data to your TF201. I used the drivers that are on the Microsoft site, but there is a link to some universal drivers in the post above. Connect the cable from your TF201 to a USB port on your computer, and after deciding which option you want to try, double click Fresh Root.bat or Fresh Start.bat. Fresh Start.bat will first install the TWRP 2.2.2.1 recovery (that's what recovery.blob is). It will then install whatever JB ROM you decided to use. I went with the 10.4.2.15 ROM that's now on the ASUS site. The Urkel batch file may then restore root access, but that didn't work for some reason in my case. I think my problem was not mounting \System. You can do this by booting into TWRP recovery that you now have, select the Mount button, and put an X in the top box. In my case it seems that the box becomes unchecked during reboot. I tried it several times and gave up, but there is another simple way to regain root access if you have made it this far. Download Superuser-3.2-arm-signed.zip and flash that using TWRP, and you will at long last have root access once again. I see that this file has already been mentioned in this thread, and it worked like a charm for me.
So why did I want root access to being with? It's because of that stupid GPS problem. GPS isn't really needed on a pad in my opinion, but things like that bug me (pardon the pun)! When I was still using ICS, I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and then used GooManager to flash TF201_External_GPS.zip. This file allowed the GPS function in my TF201 to work just as well as the GPS in my Samsung Galaxy S2. Also, I see no change when I attach the GPS dongle. What does that tell you? I think for most people with the GPS problem, it's a FIRMWARE problem, not a hardware problem. I'm not having a wifi problem, but I suspect that this is also a firmware problem. If Asus is smart, they have someone reading these blogs to get some ideas on how to fix their problems. Instead, they've spent money sending people a GPS dongle that, at least in some cases, is just a waste of time and money. So I've reinstalled the GPS zip file, and my GPS works...so now Google Maps can tell me where I am. Thanks, I already know that most of the time. Another thing that seemed to help with the GPS problem...disable the stock browser and use the Dolphin browser instead. I have no idea why that should make a difference.
Since I am a noob (whatever man), I tried to spell this out so that it can be easily understood by other noobs. Good luck, hope this works for you.

need help rooting

hey,
so my mum just bought a desire 601. Before, I had given her my old rooted phone with all my customizations that she has now grown accustomed to, so she wants me to root her new phone and make it look exactly the same.
When she gave it to me to root earlier today, it was brand new. I unlocked the bootloader, and flashed the custom recovery (I went with Philz), but I can't seem to get root. I flashed the latest 2.40 from chainfire's site, but I keep getting the "No binary installed" error. The zip always flashes successfully. Root checker says I have no root.
I just want to keep the ROM stock since its my mom's phone. I showed her insertcoin running on my M7, but she likes sense 5.5, and insertcoin only provides sense 6. So I just want to root the stock ROM and move on.
EDIT: hey, is there an RUU anywhere for this phone? because I can't seem to backup with either philz or twrp, just says cant mount cache and system partitions... wanna be extra careful not to mess anything up
EDIT: Been messing with this all day, no response from anyone here on XDA, went ahead and installed insertcoin. Failed. tried again. success. no idea why. STILL don't have root. Tried superSU and superUser with full wipes. WTF. help?
EDIT: well, thanks for your help XDA, but I managed to finally get it. found some obscure program for windows called Kingo root, and it worked first run. I never looked at windows utilities, always just rooted manually, but whatever, its done now.
