[Q] I hate ICS on the XU, I cant root and cant go back to GB :( - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

I was very happy with the performance of GB on my xperia U but there was no root for GB. I was told that in order to get root I have to update to ICS. So I did via update manager and am on the 6.1..54 firmware. Its horrible, slow and laggy.
I used both methods of rooting, flashtool and Bin4ry's both have failed and dont work. My phone cannot be rooted.
So can anyone tell me how I can root this firmware?
Also can I go back to stock GB? if yes please tell me how.
Thank you

.54 cannot be rooted using binary but theres a method where you have to flash the .10 kernel and then root using binary and flash back the .54 kernel and you will be rooted.......
Search the dev thread for it you will find the kernels........

Does this method require unlocked bootloader? I mean the one involving flashing .10 kernel and then back .54 one. Sorry for the "noobish" question, but I just began to explore the root/flashing aspects of my XGO and the proccess is completely different from my previous samsung phone, so it's like begining from zero point again at knowledge.

No. Flashing stock kernel does not require unlocked bootloader, u can keep it locked. there are plenty of guides available here so dont worry.

Thanks for the reply. Indeed I managed to root, install CWM recovery and flashed my first rom at my XGO.
Another "noobish" question if you can answer is that I backed up my rom before flashing the custom rom, yet in the clockwordmod folder in internal memory now there is nothing in it. Did the flashing erased my back up? So I cannot get my original FW, since I didn't back it up at my pc? I mean I had greek FW branded to a carrier, so if I need to send it to service, how am I supposed to get it back? To be honest I didn't see a such situation coming so I was unprepared. FYI I flashed [FXP210] XperiaPremiuMâ„¢ v4 from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155343. Thanks for your help again!

No i didn't. I still have locked bootloader. that's why i flashed v4 rom for locked bootloader. Yet I may try v5, since it's compatible with LB as well. just i'll have to flash the boot.img through flashtool if I remember correctly from what I read in that thread.

ICS ROM and Questions

Hey
Currently have a rooted Xperia Mini Pro on 2.3 Gingerbread but it seems the official ICS 4.0 update won't be coming to my SI number so I have a few questions. I have decided to install a custom ICS ROM on my phone so would like it to be as fast as possible and very stable. So got a few questions for you.
My phone is rooted, do I flash Clockwork Mod onto it and then clear the data etc and flash the new ROM?
How do I unlock the bootloader and can I relock it later? Any easy method? And if I need to do this, do I do it before flashing the recovery?
I have apps installed on my SD Card. I know the ones installed on my phone will be wiped and I can re-install those few but will the large games and apks installed on my SD card be wiped too? Or will they still show up in the menu?
Do I flash the kernel that I'll need the same way as the ROM too?
And finally the most important question: which the quickest ICS ROM for the SK17i?
Thanks a lot in advance
There is 2 ways to unlock the bootloader, one official and one non official. I used the official http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ the other one you have to find on the forum. Both is possible to relock bootloader by flashing a ftf file thru flashtool.
Kernel is flashed thru flashtool and the rom thru cwm thats usually included in the kernel.
Apps on your SD card will not show on the new custom rom as the phone doesnt know that you have them installed so you will have to reinstall (or use titanium backup).
First of all I tried the official ICS on my SK17i and I didn't like it, it's alot slower than the GB with no super feauters that deserve it
I am now using the MiniCMSandwich Lite ROM. IT'S SOOO great and working very will. You can find it in a thread here.
Follow the instruction in the thread.
If u unlocked bootloader u can relock it but if u decided to unlock it follow the testpoint method not the official one because it's better.
Anyway .. Installing the official ICS or th ROM I told u don't need unlocking bootloader so don't unlock it.
If u want to root ur ICS u have to read that before Updating to ICS

Right firstly I decided to attempt to unlock my bootloader. It turns out for some reason I cannot unlock it (says not allowed in the menu). So suddenly a lot of the good ROMS are out of the question.
I have decided on the below ROM as Tayyar states that I don't need an unlocked bootloader. I know how to flash the ROM etc but how would I flash the Kernel? Or would it automatically flash with the ROM? I remember reading somewhere an unlocked bootloader is a MUST to flash the ICS Kernels hence my question
The official update has also not been made available for my phone and I doubt it will be so I will stick to my current version and flash the ROM now
About the apps on the SD Card, how should I go about it then? Should I get Titanium Backup and then do what with it? I have quite a few apps, it would be very annoying to need to re-install all of these.
Thanks a lot
Since your phone is rooted, try editing the region codes/CDA strings in /system/build.prop to a CDA code/SI number that has the ICS update. I did this myself when I reflashed my phone to get root on GB. I connected using Sony Update Service and was able to get stock ICS customized for my country using "CUSTOMIZED PH WORLD I 1254-1952"
What I changed was the CDA strings inside:
ro.product.name
ro.build.fingerprint
ro.semc.version.cust
You do not have to replace the whole value, just the XXXX-XXXX CDA string you already have there.
More info on these XDA threads:
[SOLVED] force update by editing build.prop, Also: [WIP] list of CDA strings!
Here's a list of available WT19 CDA codes for different countries/regions.
Credits go to original posters.
Titanium Backup is always a great app to use. Only caveat is, you might want to manually restore apps instead of doing a batch restore; some of them might not work with the jump from GB to ICS. Also it would cause a lot of trouble if you try to restore Contacts Storage from a GB ROM to an ICS ROM. Just stating my personal experience

Kernels can only be flashed with an unlocked bootloader. Kernels get only flashed via fastboot mode. A cwm flash is not possible at the moment.
You can flash custom roms via cwm. Your bootloader is locked, so you have to look that your choosen rom is compatible with your bootloader.

My friend, ICS for Xperia mini/minipro sucks.. Its was slow compared to GB. I've tried all the tweaks, hack and other bullshits.. now i am back to GB. and i am very happy i did. But if you really want ICS, then Minicms/CM9 is the best choice.

[Q] Wi-fi problem on 4.0.2.A.0.42 gb

Hey guys, hate starting new threads, but yet again I think my problem is unique. I bought an Xperia Neo, unlocked the bootloader, flashed .62 down to .42 (so I can root), rooted it, and my wi-fi doesn't work. There is a full stable network, but it doesn't recognize it. I tried other networks, but all my friends' wi-fi works perfectly, and I can't even find the network. The wi-fi itself turns off after a few seconds of being on, What could I havew done wrong? Please help.

Do a backup and flash .64 Why on earth did you downgrade back to .42 just to root when your bootloader is unlocked? Just install a custom kernel with CWM and flash a superuser zip.
P.S. DON'T DO OTA. You might brick your PHONE!
jasonwsc is right
Flash .62 and then do one of the unlocked bootloader methods to gain root acces or even better install a custom rom.
DONT GO FOR ICS you will regret it..
Anyway maybe it is a bug with .42 firmware edition
Jut upgrade to .62

At the moment,4.1.b.0.587 is out only for Sk17i i guess.

Thanks! But i was talking about having stock rom with custom kernel, or do i need both for make it work better?..besides, the reason i haven't rooted my phone and unlocked the bootloader is becauses is to hard! XD i remember when i used to have a motorola milestone, you just need to install the app universal androot, or use superone click, and that's it, you have your phone rooted, but know it's to difficult, i have a galaxy nexus too, i recently root that one, and it wasn't easy either but i did it, but with this one, the xperia mini, it looks like having root and unlock the bootloader it's no for everyone
After rooting, when I'm on cyanogenmod9 on ics,I can overclock to 1.6 ghz too while gaming.no lag in using phone too.though my bootloader is unlocked. I would suggest you to root for a better experience!
Cheers.

To flash custom kernel you need unlocked bootloader, but for flashing custom ROM you need root and/or unlocked bootloader. Mostly of the ROMs work on locked bootloader too but if you want to play games so much you should Install Pure AOSP/AOKP based ROM and if you want best experience with games you should also install custom kernel.

[Q] Custom Rom's

I did a search but did not exactly what I wanted.
Have a few questions in mind:
1.Can I Flash any custom Rom with my stock kernel?
2.Will doing the above cause any problems?(brick, bootloops, buggy rom)
3.Also unlocking the bootloader(is it necessary? Please a Noob here)via the official method(sk17i)I heard we would loose access to certain company features(track.id etc)would I loose access to official update of firmware from them?
4.Most of the Rom's featured here have not specified which kernel to be used with them could anyone suggest one which can handle most Rom's?

Please read the sticked threads, everything should be explained there
1. Yes, custom roms for locked bootloader
2. It can cause bricks or bootloops, roms where something's not working can be buggy
3. Unlocking the bootloader is necessary for nearly all custom roms like Cyanogenmod, AOKP, etc. You will loose your DRM (who needs them?) and track id won't work, but if you download the latest version it should work! You can't update via PC Companion, but you can flash official updates using flashtool :good:
4. All the kernels like Rage Kernel, kernel panic, x kernel, if you look in the kernel thread there should be explained for which software version they are...
That's it, but should be explained in the sticked thread, too

Prerooted kernel? You mean the rom prerooted or a prerooted kernel?
If your bootloader is unlocked, flash a custom kernel for gingerbread like rage kernel, if it's locked you need to downgrade to root
I'm looking for the pre-rooted kernel only. I rooted my phone using the downgrade method, but it didn't turn out so well, also, I wasn't able to find any .42 specific to my location/released by my carrier, and it affected my signal strength.

There won't be a prerooted kernel, only if your bootloader is unlocked, then you can flash a prerooted kernel for gingerbread.
If it's locked, you could try to flash .42 kernel only and root on it. Afterwards flash .62 kernel again
So, mine is locked. Can I flash the kernel alone through Flashtool? Wouldn't that soft brick my device? Quote from this thread.
After flashing restart your device, It may not start completely, may remain at Sony logo or blank/black.
Whatever the status is, just restart your device and proceed with the next step.

If I'm not able to start the phone, how am I going to be able tor root it? The zorgRush exploit needs a working ROM.

It shouldn't brick your device and I think you should be able to root it when it's in a bootloop, otherwise they won't write it in a tutorial. With doomlord's toolkit or with flashtool it should work :good:
The trick didn't work. I wasn't able to root after downgrading the firmware. Maybe it only works with ICS. Anyway I'll just live with the bloatware for now.
Thanks

4.0.2.A.0.42 can be rooted with the GB rooting kit. It is here on the forum, Search for it.
After that you can do OTA update to 4.0.2.A.0.62, if your bootloader is locked.
