I read about this earlier. Very cool that HTC is doing this!! Just wish it had the correct bands to be used on Sprint. Hopefully they aren't going to lock down all other phones super tight! That would really suck!!

I see no reason to lock down the regular ones tighter than they already are.

Re: Introducing the First HTC Developers edition phone!!!
Ill be SUPER annoyed if sprint doesn't have one. Is this purchased through carrier or from HTC?
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

I look at it like this they are trying to get in good with the developers and it's a nice way to do it (very expensive though) the thing that I'm wondering is how unlocked is the bootloader gonna be? Is it gonna be the same old thing that we get when we go to the dev unlock site or is it gonna be s-off? Don't know where to ask that but would like to know. Cool thing is they may be able to use the bootloader from this to unlock the other htc one phones since they are supposed to be similar.
p.s who says gorgeous these days?

Re: Introducing the First HTC Developers edition phone!!!
Oh Ok, that's cool. I didn't know this. I started with the first EVO. And since then I've read endless "HTC doesn't care about the development community" posts. So, from my perspective this is a big jump towards what "we" like.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

I'm buying it if it exists. Period. My only gripe about HTC partly is how they try to stop mods. If they stopped that, I'd never think twice about which OEM to buy from.
From my Evo LTE, yup.

introducing, locked boot loaders

Well hopefully they don't actually sell a locked bootloader... I'd be really disappointed if it was not s-off

Right. Why the hell is "Developer Edition" necessary?
The fact that it exists in post HTC-DEV unlocking times is concerning.
Hopefully its just paranoia but I don't like the designation.

I'm gonna just call and see. Hopefully I get an answer
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

Ok, sheer disappointment she said these are a tmobile unlocked phone, HTCdev unlocked bootloader, and sold by the carrier. I'm pretty sure its just a way for them to sell to tmobile clients based on that phone call. I don't really know more that though. Still its disappointing. No s-off according to that rep.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

Try and call again maybe different person, different answer
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Nope. Same answer. I didn't call, but same answer us the only answer. And for anyone thinking HTC (or anyone else) would release an S-off device that isn't nexus....seriously?! Seriously? Come on, now, wake up.
From my Evo LTE, yup.

Well, sometimes I live on pure hope. Then people tell me I'm wrong....
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2

The device most likely won't be S-Off and will only come with an unlocked bootloader. Truth is I really don't care about this because it's going to be GSM only, however, what I do care about is what this means for HTC. If this is a sign that they are going to start locking bootloaders, well, I'm not going to buy another HTC phone. I can imagine that HTC Dev takes a lot of work on HTC's part, and judging from the poor business decisions they've made in the past, they probably don't see a reason to support the developer community. The opportunity cost of the time spent developing the bootloader unlocking tools probably outweighs the extra profit they could incur by focusing on battling Samsung's propaganda machine. Releasing separate devices with unlocked bootloaders saves them time by not having to manage the unlocking process, and they can't really sell devices with already unlocked bootloaders, as that leaves the average user open to attacks. However, I have faith in the developers here at XDA, that they can overcome annoyances like locked bootloaders. Just look what happened to the Verizon Galaxy S3.:highfive:

The One has already been unlocked in the UK using HTCDEV. I assume the method works on all versions. ModaCo has done it and I assume working on S-off if he hasn't done it already.

I doubt anything is ever going to come with an unlocked bootloader. People could mess up their phones and say it happened during an OTA. They won't be able to tell if it was really during an OTA or they did it themselves since the person would have S-OFF either way. They would either have to cancel their warranty or not have phones with unlocked bootloaders.
I understand the wait, but at least some word from Rev; 'hey guys still working on the 1.50 hboot unlock...' .
Here is what pisses me off royally. See, HTC is requiring users to sign a electronic document that bypasses the Magnuson Moss Act; requires manufactures to prove that the alteration is what caused the warranty claim. Ie, car owner comes to the dealership because engine blew. Dealership notices that owner put on aftermarket exhaust, dealership will not warranty the engine. HTC is technically bypassing all that stating that rooting your phone, you are opting out of any factory or extended warranty. Ie, phone no turny on, HTC > You = po3ned . Sure they'll take a look at it, only to tell you that it is now going to cost you $xxx.xx to fix it.
Its odd that they say unlock the phone but all they do is unlock the mmc protection to the file system and still void parts of the warranty.
The boot partition where the kernel lives is still protected and unflashable without using the work around.
Seems to me they are benefiting from this "unlock" more than anyone.

You make a very good point, but I have one word for you; partnership. If you go back and read HTC and Sprint's Terms and Agreements it states that by agreeing to the T&A you are allowing the sharing of information. If Sprint says that by agreeing to the unlock you void the 'manufacture's' warranty, then you are doing just that by agreeing to the unlock.
But again, I applaud you for thinking outside the box. For once some people are beginning to see behind the facade.

You would be absoutly correct, Google and Larry Page could care less about Motorola or a cell phone. What they do care about is the 6000 (or is it 16,000?) patents that Motorola owns! Right now, Apple is sueing everyone for infringements, thats getting read to change real fast!!!
I dont know if you guys know this, Motorola was around L-O-N-G before Sammy, HTC, Apple, Noika, all of them. They held all these patents but never really enforced them for whatever reason. If you remember, Apple went after Motorola with its Lawyer Goons with this Paten crap. I guess Motorola did not have the balls to fight, but Larry Page has bigger Goons! F**k, motorola has patent on the old bag phone of the late 80's! So if they every come back........
Correct - this is all about now owning patents.
Means little or nothing about current phones.

Lol you can put the photon on pretty much any carrier now. Atm I have my photon on page plus (verizon). I'm pretty sure boost is on the sprint network so 3g or 4g might work (as long as your boot loader is locked). To get on another cdma carrier all you got to do for the most part is flash alother prl.

I hope I'm wrong but I really doubt this will affect prior devices like the Photon, Atrix, etc.
I can imagine future devices having prompt updates, perhaps vanilla android, but seems unlikely they'd suddenly decide to move the ICS Q4 update to sooner out of the bottom of their hearts.
Guys, here is the most informative article I have read on the subject from AndroidPolice. This guy is a Law Student in California and explains the good and the bad of the marriage. Enjoy!

Expecting ICS sooner is unrealistic. Expecting unlocked bootloaders for existing phones so we can do it ourselves is another matter entirely.
As far as carrier approval goes, remember that there's a fundamental difference culturally between Motorola and Google. Motorola wouldn't even contemplate releasing an unlocker unless the carriers demanded and paid for it. Google will have its lawyers read the sales & maintenance contract it has with the carriers, and do it anyway as long as there's no clause in that contract explicitly prohibiting them from doing it.
In practical terms, that probably means Sprint and T-Mobile will have official unlockers within weeks, and AT&T & Verizon will never get them. However, I'll bet there will be some VERY interesting tidbits of info in the Sprint unlockers that might prove useful to someone at XDA trying to write one for a Verizon phone... ;-)

I agree, for now there's little benefit of having s-off. For me, I prefer not to have my device listed in htc's database as being unlocked.
More importantly however, once there are other updates such as radios, and other low level updates, the process to update will become more convoluted I think. You'll have to run relock (I think), then ruu, then unlock again, then restore.
With S-off, you simply flash the new radio or other update and it's a done deal.
Wouldn't s-off be necessary for switching between carriers? Since LTE wouldn't be available until 2013 for some markets why not save a few dollars.

Are you sending your phone to HTC for warranty issues because "most" device "fixing" happens at the Sprint store level OR through Asurion and they don't hold root/HTC Dev unlock against you.
Saving your HTC warranty is practically a moot point..... but as always, to each, his own. I'm sure you won't see anyone knocking you for going your own road.
I don't waste money on insurance. Once I've had the phone a couple weeks and know it doesn't have any defects i don't care but in the first few weeks i do.
I didn't realize sprint didn't care about unlocking though. I am surprised people are always so concerned with unrooting when bringing their phones in for issues in that case.

I'm not talking about insurance, Sprint can't (shouldn't) turn you away for warranty issues of any kind (*within the warranty period). If you remove TEP, $8 and soon to be $11, which includes the ERP (Equipment Replacement Program) and the ESRP (Equipment Service & Replacement Program) you can still pay in store for a repair and avoid having to go through, what I'm sure would be, a painful warranty claim with HTC. I actually don't even think HTC would not honor their warranty if you use the Unlock and need a "hardware" warranty claim having absolutely nothing to do with rooting the device. Who knows though.... I do know, if you have no insurance or the ESRP at minimum, you'll be looking at a charge or the HTC direct route. I would recommend at least the $4 a month ESRP as we know how speakers and screens can be (at least in the past) the weakest links and need replacement.
As for the rooted devices being ok (this is very new and the worry before was pretty real), you can read an article and see the internal memo here http://www.androrev.com/2012/04/17/...-provide-customer-support-for-rooted-devices/. With that said, I'll never voluntarily take my rooted device in, they don't need know that info!
I never s on my device I just unroot lol o and take my sdcard out just in case but you have to be brave to not take your sd card out if you have personal things on there.

Has it been confirmed that the DNA will be unlockable on HTCdev? It's up to the carrier and after what VZW pulled with the SGS3 it'll be interesting to see their approach to voluntarily allowing the DNA to be unlocked. It'll be equally interesting to see their approach to warranty service if they do allow it to be unlocked. The One XL folks lucked out and were able to get S-OFF themselves. The equally bright devs on the One X forum haven't had the same luck and it wasn't for lack of trying.
