Current(3-14-2013)Workaround for T-Mobile‘s WiFi Tether block - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

I found this video today about how to workaround T-mobiles wifi hotspot block. It worked! I own a rooted LG-P769(I dunno if it works for un-rooted but the video says its supposed to)
Now in the Video he does a step by step process. For a reason. I dont know why but for some reason it works the way he does it. because i didnt do it his way at first. i just download the apps and turned on the app "Hola" and then turned on PDA.net and that dont work.
ok okay, all i wanna say and dont hold me for any bad results you get but. Just follow what he does and it worked for me coo. Im just the messenger dont kill the messenger
FYI the two apps i used was "Hola" and "PDA.net" got them right off the Play Store.
(sorry i dont have enough posts to post a link)
SEARCH YOUTUBE TO WATCH THE VIDEO
KEYWORDS= How to bypass tether blocking WITHOUT root (2013)

FoxFi works perfectly too. I think it also works without root.

Can you pm me the link. If not it koo
Sent from my LG-P769 using xda app-developers app

what i did was, using foxfi, using google chrome, using user agent switcher extension to mimic android. boom. done. i was doing this about 7 months ago

FoxFi/PDAnet+ with the proxy addon works when tethering my iPad for almost all apps. When I use Amazon Video app I get blocked. All tether traffic stops until I reconnect the iPad.
I don't even get the upsell page from T-Mobile. This started recently.
I would not trust a peer to peer proxy unless it was the Tor network. You never know if your data is safe.
Not to steal your thunder GACKMAN, but here is my tutorial to bypass tether restrictions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201062

yep, I forget the guys screen name but do a youtube search for razr wifi hack...very easy!!!!
I followed his directions and I paid for the sqlite editor app he recommends (I think it was $2.50), but I'm sure there's freeware...
after the quick hack it allows you to use the preinstalled mobile hotspot or USB tether functionality or you can download the wifi tether apk

Currently the built in WiFi tether when hacked with sqlite editor will only work in USB tether mode. Wifi tether isnt 100% Alot of sites just fail to load for what ever reason. Maybe this has changed now, but when I changed the entitlement check on mine alot of site just would never load over wifi, but worked great over usb.
Ill deff look into it once im off work.
I would prefer wifi tether or maybe even bluetooth tether for a tablet

Don't know if this works, but it worked well on my HD2 when everything else didn't work.

Admittedly, I've only tethered a couple of times now, but didn't notice any issues, I mainly tether logmein to run my work computer remotely...hmmm maybe try the wifi tether apk and use ROM manager to fix permissions like mentioned above???
I just followed the same guide from when I used sqllite on the Bionic and it has worked spot on ever since. Mine has been 100% no messed up pages as others have reported. Just change your Entitlement Check to 0 and reboot and you should be ready for Free Wifi Tethering ;-)

I did actually use the built in WiFi tether as well as the wifi tether apk and both of them showed the same issues with not loading certain pages correctly. However I never fixed the permissions since it was never mentioned to try that. Once I get my new razr on friday i'll give it a try.
I think though that its something with how the data gets routed from the 3/4G chip to the wifi chip. When any of you have been wifi tethering with either application, have you been on 3G or 4G data? perhaps this is the issue? I've been in a 4G area trying to wifi tether and having it fail, but I have never tried on 3G...
Also I wonder if after the OTA update that the results will be different? can anyone confirm this yet?
Is anyone else getting the message "tethering or mobile hotspot active" in the notification bar when using the wifi tether apk? My X never displayed this notification when using wifi tether.
I just tried the Barnacle Tether app. THe phone is brand new, so I don't have any billing info. however, I did get the "tethering" notification. Is there a setting that hides my profile first?
We will see.
If you're rooted, Android Wifi Tether works. In AP/Infrastructure mode no less. No SQL editing either...

I have the same issues with web pages not loading properly after using the SQLite hack. I tried my girlfriends hotspot feature and it worked perfectly. Does anyone know why some pages won't load? Yahoo and articles in CNN are examples of pages that just hang up when loading.

Not sure if this will work on the Razr or not (someone want to try and lmk?)
Im currently still on the Droid Pro, but have been waiting to upgrade to the Razr (hence my posts in this forum haha).

I am using the Verizon mobile hotspot feature on my Razr (not rooted) and several pages (like the ones you described) do not fully load. When I use the USB tether, it works flawless.
Here is a link to a discussion on this and a workaround for your PC. Unfortunately, it won't fix WiFi tethering to a tablet or gaming device.

Just installed the apk. Will check at work to see if anyone can connect
works like a charm !
i tried this before on my droid 2 and i didn't work the stupid mobile hotspot would appear and it would not connect properly.
but the razr works flawlessly!
thanks !
Did you set the device profile to the Razr?
I know with my Droid Pro, the tethering would not work under the Pro profile, but it would under the Droid 2 profile.

[Q] Tethering with rooted ICS phone

I have searched extensively on Google, and XDA but can't find the right answer.
I want to tether my phone. I can do this directly in Android but my current carrier brings up a message in the browser saying it's not supported on my current plan.
I'm addressing this, but in the mean time I'm curious if there is a way round it, hypothetically.
I have seen some Apps, such as ClockWork Mod Tether, but since my phone is rooted I wondered if there is a more elegant solution that doesn't involve any software to be added to my PC.
I read about using TB to freeze a specific App/Process but couldn't find any details.
Any advice would be great,
thanks

HOW have you not heard of android wifi tether? One of the first reasons I had for rooting the first Android phone I got.
There's also Barnacle Tether, available on the play store.
Guess Barnacle is gone... but there are other tethering apps on the play store though.
And I'm wrong again. Barnacle is still there, but doesn't show up when I search from my phone. How curious.
Since your phone is rooted you can download wireless tether.
Google it and you will easily find the download link or even directly via the play store.

I appreciate the reply, but if you read my post again the issue I'm having is not an app to enable wifi tether directly on the handset, it's that the packet data is being detected as not from the phone so I get a message, on the computer, in the internet browser saying my priceplan doesn't include tethering. I cant get around this 3 website redirect. So, I need a way to tether, without the network knowing... The apps you mention work when the block is at the phone level I believe.... This is something different Three is doing..
Please correct me if I'm wrong though...
Oh, and as for the apps not showing up, the mobile phone providers asked google to block these apps for certain customers.. if you connect to a wifi network when in flight mode, and go the google market, you should still be able to see them...

I WAS on wifi.
And did you ACTUALLY download the tether app and try, or were you using the tether built into the settings of Android? Because it sure doesn't sound like you downloaded the app...
And I don't have tethering on my carrier plan, but the tether app works just fine for me.

Initially when I first posted I was trying the built in app but I downloaded the app you suggested anyway, but it didn't work. would connect to the computer but no data connection. Unsure if its an app problem or still a three problem, but I don't see how this app would fix the three problem. Does it somehow mask the PC data connection??? I couldn't see anything in the settings or set up that suggest that it would, it just looks like a more feature rich wifi hotspot app?? In addition I found mention that that others with my issue have also tried these apps like barnacle and it didn;t resolve the problem....

They can suspend your service if they discover you are doing tethering on your device if you are not alowed in your current plan.
I Hope you wont have any issues.
Otherwise it is possible that the sim card lock the feature even on rooted phone when detect thetering or it is impossible ?

yes I suppose they could do, but like I say I'm resolving this with my contract. It's more that I'm curious how they are doing it, and on principle don't like being told what I can and can't do
It can't be a sim lock.
I just tried tethering a Macbook, and amazingly that worked!.. SO, It must be something to do with the Packet Headers I'm guessing.. Or they are doing some other more detailed packet sniffing... It means there is definitely a software route around it... Need a clever developer to read this thread
I guess clockworkMod Tether might work, but I want a solution without a PC install..

When you use thetering, you embark to the provider internet network.
for example my provider is Bell Canada and their proxy is web.wireless.bell.ca
this one is for the device internet
for the thetering one they use another configuration settings when i connect my device to the computer.
What happen is when you plug your device to the computer, a signal is sent to the provider stating you entered in thetering mode. You don't have access to thetering so your internet connection is limited to the walled garden of the provider stating you are not subscrided to the service. Thats why i think they blocked the port 80 on your device and redirect you to that page.
Now for the Macintosh story.. It is not impossible that you can connect without problem with a mac and safari. I know a lot of people emulating a handled device with the Mac and the safari browser and those peeps didnt had a thetering plan.
The differences came with the drivers installed. Mac OS one are quite different in term of functionality than windows, thats why maybe the provider is able to sniff more easily people using windows but i am not a senior programmer. I am currently taking courses to become one but for now it is only suppositions. If i am wrong feel free to correct me but I am quite sure about what i am saying and that's why you dont have issues with a mac

This sounds correct to me. I'm pretty annoyed though. Only had the contract a month, I was told I could move onto a more expensive plan within contract if I needed more allowance etc.. Phone up 3, not only do they not let you PAY MORE for a different plan, but they also don't let anyone shift onto the one plan ever, unless its a new contract.. So basically **** them... so even if I want to pay extra for tethering I can't... absolute nonsense...
I had the same issue with three. I downloaded masqued crusader from play store. Activated it and then started wireless/usb tether. It worked. That was a while back tho. On a payg sim card on a galaxy s on gb. Its worth a try though.

If your phone doesn't already include the option to tether in your settings, download the app from the link above. Once downloaded you're pretty much good to go from there... Sorry for not elaborating more, but I'm typing this on my phone... When I get to a PC in the morning I'll type up something more formal/informal.
Quick question for reference, what rom are you using?
My vibrant has a euphoria.. I thought T-Mobile block tethering...

Really? Because I just typed up this post on my PC in Google Chrome (without the "user agent switcher" extension) and I am currently tethered to my Vibrant. I've also tested Internet Explorer, which also works while tethered to my Vibrant... I'm using the app I mentioned above, although the built in wireless tether feature also works for me. Then again, I am using a custom rom, so that could explain why it works for me. Anywho... landrian18, you want to know how to get tether on your device? OK, I'll show you how to do it both on an ICS rom and with the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app.
On an ICS rom:
Note- I'm not positive this is the same method you would use on euphoria as I'm on a different ICS rom, however, you can still try and see. It should be the same.
1. Go into your phones system settings, this can be accomplished by either locating the settings icon in your app drawer/home screen or by clicking the leftmost physical touch button on your phone.
2. Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS click More....
3. Click Tethering & portable hotspot.
4. Click on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Note 2- Your phone is now acting like a Wi-Fi hotspot and is accessible/detectable by almost all wireless devices except other Android smart phones. If you would like to encrypt your Wi-Fi hotspot click Configure Wi-Fi hotspot and change the password. You can also rename the Wi-Fi hotspot by changing the SSID from AndroidAP (or whatever the default is) to whatever you'd like.
On the app:
Note- These steps are written under the assumption that you have already installed the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" application.
1. Locate and launch the WiFi Tether for Root Users application.
2. Done. That's all you got to do.
Note 2- If you want to customize the SSID, password (remove password), encryption type, etc. Simply go into the apps settings.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO ASK.
I'm on a custom ROM I've been tethering forever but now I get redirected to TMobiles tethering advertisement page . Others have recently complained about this on XDA . It only works of I use user agent switcher .

does the phone charge, tether and receive incoming calls while pluged in usb, during wifi or usb tethering? (I used to tether an evdo device and an incoming call would drop the internet)
2.
supposedly easytether will screw with any future attempts to flash your phone and best avoided, whats the best fully featured free alternative to pdanet for a rooted vibrant to usb tether? + can you confirm wifi tether for root works on device?

If I use firefox on my laptop and get redirected to a tmobile subscription page all I have to do is install this addon on my laptop. even if I get re-directed before installing the addon, installing the addon will solve the issue?
thanks, I did a couple searches and didn't find answers.

Just a quick question, are you sure you have the vibrant, and not the galaxy s 4g? There is no stock gingerbread on the vibrant...
Side note, I've used easy tether (great alternative to pda net) along with firefox for a few years and have never seen the t mobile warning. Used it on stock and rooted g1 and vibrant with never any issues.
Does an incoming call drop your usb internet connection and does it charge while connected?
Unless I'm wrong the sgh-t959v is a vibrant as observed from the label. I updated via kies to gingerbread rom from mfg that why I called it stock, not a custom rom.
T959v isn't the same as our t959 Vibrants.
Ours didn't have a GB update via Kies. Be careful even using Kies.
-I'm not sure there is much in our Vibrant thread that applies to t959v at all. Is the t959v the Samsung Blaze 4g? I must research this when I have time.
note: don't modify your phone with anything you see here at all until someone with more knowledge chimes in. I think its a bad idea.
T959v is the galaxy s 4g! T959 is the vibrant. The vibrant never got the gingerbread update, galaxy s 4g did.
Easy tether does charge while in use, phone calls I don't know, never tried.

How to MAKE SURE you can tether without the T-Mobile page.

Ok, I'm going to start out with a trick, on your browser on your PC / MAC download an extension such as "Chrome UA Spoofer" that will change your User Agent. This just lets you look like your PC's a phone and therefore you can use sites without worrying about the pop up T-Mobile uses! You might run into mobile sites, just look at the bottom for the full desktop version
Thought I would share what I use! It works 100% all of the time in conjunction with Wireless Tether for Root Users and the routing fix
There is already a thread that shows how to avoid this issue

so was I until night before last... all I did was change my User Agent on my netbook to Android for normal browseing and Firefox for Netflix
I just firefox in general, no issues.

I'm considering on getting an LG V10. Does Foxfi WiFi tether work?

WiFi tethering is a must for me on my phone. Is the V10 compatable with foxfi?
It works. I've been tethering with it but there is a trick to getting it to work which is you are going to need Adguard, at least this appears to be the case.
I have the full Adguard paid service which is a complete blocking of all ads including protecting your phone with a firewall. The reason I think you need Adguard (perhaps a free alternative will work) is because I can't get tethering to work unless I enable it with Adgaurd running. Adguard blocks the tethering from connecting to your PC but blocks the tethering sub notice. So after you start foxfi you just have to pause Adguard and it will connect.
If I try to enable tethering with any app without having Adguard running it will always say I need to subscribe, but if I start tethering while having Adguard running tethering starts and then I just have to pause Adguard and it connects. I'm typing this now on my tethered PC and it's actually been connected for 2 days straight with no drops. Been streaming amazon prime, twitch, and youtube red all in full HD with very little buffering(only have -105db 4g signal strength).
Let me know if this works, or you need more help, I'll do what I can.
Imucarmen. Which adblocker are you using. Don't see an adguard on play. Thanks
Adguard has its own website. Google kicked it off the playstore 2 years ago

sorry for the late response but here's the site https://adguard.com/en/welcome.html
I highly recommend it if you don't want ads. It's the most effective ad blocker I've ever used. Just make sure you enable it because you have to do it manually.
This is exactly how I got foxfi to work for me. I also have disabled many lg and Verizon apps. Read somewhere about dtignite app in particular was good to stop.
I have unlimited data and use paid FoxFi 2.17.2 with no issues whatsoever. It does install a root certificate to bypass Verizon checks.
