Problem with Unroot/Flash Counter UK S3 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Previously I had rooted my Samsung Galaxy S3 on 4.1.2 in order to learn more about what is possible through first hand experience. However, my phone developed some faults and it is due to be handed in to a store in a few days, therefore I need to be able to revert the device status and reset the flash counter. I had tried using Triangle Away but to no avail. I then searched around and found out that re-flashing official firmware back onto the phone and doing a wipe data and wipe cache from recovery will solve my problem. It didn't .
However, the official firmware I re-flashed too was not the original firmware I initially had when I first got the phone last year because as an idiot, I forgot to note it down.
I am now on;
Android Vers: 4.1.2
Baseband Vers: I9300BVELK1
Build Number: JZI54K.I9300XXELLA
Download Mode:
Custom Binary Dowload: Yes (1 Count)
Custom Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
Can anyone please help me out? Would I need to flash another stock firmware as I have read that "[...]ELLA" are not compatible with Triangle Away.
Thanks.

Just had a read through my OP and yeah It is a little misty.
Basically, I need to reset the flash counter. I've tried Triangle Away before flashing a stock rom via Odin and it didn't work. I read that re-flashing would reset the flash counter but it didn't. I then did a factory reset in recovery and that changed the custom binary to official.

Did pre order the phone from Carphone Warehouse on Orange pay monthly. Didn't have these little extra pop ups and logos that I have now with the original post mentioned firmware.
Just about to try Triangle Away right now...

Re-rooted and Device Status is still modified and the flash counter was at 2 and went down to 1 again. Custom Binary and System Status are both Custom

I don't know what else to do.
Hope someone comes along to help soon.

1) run triangle away
2) flash btu xxemb5
3) boot recovery
4) factory reset
Done

"Please also note that some devices set the counter to 1 at every boot if you are running a custom kernel or recovery. On these devices, Triangle Away may always display 1 - make sure to check the counter in actual download mode."

I think anything post XXELLA has the problem as it is due to the new bootloader, any Odin flash triggers the exclamation mark, and it won't go until you are back to stock state, however you can flash back to old bootloader, with a zip, the thread is in general with 4 or 5 bootloader to choose from.
Of course that is a risk, but worked for me fine, although I'm back on new bootloader now

Reset counter and yellow triangle with usb jib

Hello,
I was wondering, I'm using a custom rom, Hydra-h2o (aokp based), and I have a usb jib. Phone model GT-I9100.
Thinking of testing it out of curiosity and I see that when I insert it, it goes to download mode but it doesn't reset the counter nor does it remove the yellow triangle.
Is that expected? Can it be done? Or whenever I need to reset the counter/triangle I should first go back to a stock rom?
Thanks for your answers

Probably this is related to old/new bootloader. Go to this thread and scroll down to the section in bold red.

I'm using hydra-h2o which is an aokp android 4.0.4 custom rom. Below the bold red section I see a bunch of stock roms up to 4.0.3.
Should I just use one of those? Right now my base band reads XXLPX using hydra kernel.
Cheers,

Depends what your goal is: if you want to go back to stock you can use one of those.
If you just want to reset the counter with the JIG the read bold text applies. I normally just flash the old boot loader, then plug the JIG to reset the counter and then reflash the new boot loader.

He meant the red text referring to the bootloader tarball.
Ok, I think you refer to this:
" All packages below this point have the old bootloader so you can safely reset the binary counter with a Jig.
If you've already flashed a full package from elsewhere or updated using KIES and cannot reset your binary counter using the Jig just flash this package in the PDA or Bootloader section of Odin to replace the bootloaders and then you can reset the counter: Download
Here is the new Gingerbread bootloader tarball if you want to flash it back after resetting your binary counter: Download
Here is the ICS bootloader tarball if you want to flash it back after resetting your binary counter: Download"
I'm supposed to download and flash through Odin (pda section), the first link bootloader. Then use the jig and then flash the bootloader from third link. Correct?
Sorry I make many questions. I'm pretty noobish still about this topics and I rather be sure I understand procedure.
I tried downloading but all links show an 403 server error. xD
Thanks again.

Count set to 1 after recovery mode

Hello!
I want to unroot my I9300. I have flashed stock 4.1.2 through Odin because i had SN5.
Everything worked fine but when I want to use TriangleAway the count resets back to 0. The problem is when I enter in recovery mode to delete cache etc. . After exiting recovery mode and entering download mode the count is 1 again. What should I do??

Search would answer this multiple posted question .
Factory reset .
Run TA
Flash stock firmware via Odin ,
Factory reset .
Check rom count and device status are no longer custom .
BASICS .

rptoma ,just do what jegan told you to
If by chance your phone has problems AFTER just download from samfirmware whicerver firmware you want and flash it.
It`s failproof if you folow the tutorial
iirc, the red exclamation mark is related to the custom recovery(CWM) and not rooting itself.you can be rooted while having the stock recovery and not have the counter ticked.you can try flashing a stock sammy recovery then use TA and your binary counter should stay 0 even with the new bootloader.
Note: i havent done this personally in a while since i flashed the old bootloader on the phone so i dont experience it anymore.
Thanks JJEgan for your help. It worked!

Then, since i was getting de RED exclamation mark i ran Triangleaway v 2.75 to see if i could reset the counter (set to 1) and get rid of it.
No success so i did as JJEgan said (Thanks!) but had no success also.
I flashed the stock rom (downloaded via http: -- www .sammobile.com with Odin and aftrer that i flashed the custom recovery with mskip's toolkit.
Still the red mark and counter with 1.
Any help is welcome .......... and it's all right if someone calls me noob (haha).

Solved.
Flashed Vodafone's ROM. Full wipe. Root with chainfire's way (thanks). Triangle away. Done.
Can't tell you how and why but it worked.

s3 counter

Hi All,I'd be greatful if someone can advise me. My phones counter has changed to 1 annoyed because i wasn't on custom firmware or rooted at the time, i just reset my normal official firmware and the counter went up to 1. i need to change it back to 0 but it seems to be much harder than previous when ive done this.I rooted the s3 and have a custom firware on it just so i could install triangle away and reset the counter but the counter wont go below 1 anymore.i have tried to pull the battery just before the samsung logo s3 but its not working this time. I understand a stock recovery/bootloader would enable the counter to set to 0 without having to try and pull the battery. I am currently running team win recovery project 2.3.3.0.Anyone know where i get the stock from which I can run while rooted I assume or any other helpful tips?CheersFei

What state do you want the phone to be in? Do you want to continue running modified with counter of 0, or do you want to return to full stock with counter of 0?
There are several guides here on exactly how to do this, search and read for the full info.
To my knowledge you will have to downgrade your bootloader to the ICS version before factory reset, run triangle away then immediately flash stock recovery and ROM from Odin.
I've not done the above myself, so I'd recommend you read up first.

I want to return to stock because it needs to go to the shop. But the custom bootloader isnt letting the counter turn to 0 I read this is because its not stock. I tried pulling the battery before samsung logo after triangle reboots after resetting the counter but with this firmware its just not going back to zero. I understand I cant put stock firmware on until the counter is at zero because I won't be able to be rooted to use triangle.
Id just like to know what stock bootloader I should use to reset the counter. Then I can return to stock.
Thank you for replying

There are 2 methods.
1) Reset with triangle away and interupt reboot (pull battery immediately after Triangle away). This may take several attempts to get right. Then you boot into download mode. If binary counter is "0" (regardless of modified status = custom) then flash via odin
2) Flash an old bootloader (4.1.1) which you can get from any 4.1.1 official ROM on sammobile.com. There is a link to an ics bootloader in my SDS thread at the very bottom of the post too

Bootloaders since 4.1.2 and some 4.1.1 count the binary at every boot, which is why you must flash an ICS bootloader.
You also need to ensure you have stock kernel, stock recovery.
IMHO the best process would be:
Flash full stock with ODIN now.
Root with CF-AUTO root (must be AUTO) as this doesnt modify kernel or recovery
Then you should be able to triangle away and not go back to 1 on reboot.n ***If still not reset, flash ICS bootloader, then try triangle away again.
Flash stock again

Have no choice but to move back to a standard / stock ROM

Hi All,
I need to move back to a stock ROM I hope at least 4.1 as my girlfriend has just had the offical upgrade from Samsung and the phone works really well.
The reason for having to go back to a stock ROM leaving no trace the phone was had anything else on it is due to one reason only.
I use the world pay card payment terminal with my phone and this requires an app to be installed on the phone. However this will not work as the phone has a non standard rom.
I have tried to discuss this in the following thread however it look like I have no choice but to go back to a standard ROM.
My main question here is to find out is it possible to go back to a standard ROM and leave no trace the phone had ever been touched? Will I also have to change anything else like Radio as well?
Hope this all makes sence and sorry to any mods that this this is in the wrong place.
Thanks
Mathew
You can make a full wipe for ur phone and install
a fresh system from sammobile.com using odin software
its very easy really but make sure when u start downloading the system software from the sammobile
to choose your country from it if u wanna be more precise on it
Ok but will that reset the Binary Count as I think thats what the App could be looking at?
Is there a way to do that I have a Jig but it does not seem to reset the count as I had hopped.

A standard firmware should leave the binary untouched and set as official instead of custom. Another way of resetting it is triangle away app but thta will still leave you rooted etc and probably stil cause the problems using the app you need

You are correct about the trinagle away app as it would still be rooted.
Currently the binary has 3 couunts on it when I install the standard firmware will this reset to 0?
Also will my phone remail unlocked on all networks?

About the binary count, i'm not sure if flashing stock resets it fully since i haven't had stock for about a year or so
But i have been told that flashing a stock firmware will reset the binary count to 0. You can always try for yourself
How did you know what binary count you had? Triangleaway?

It should do, I've recently put my old s2 back to stock and it is now showing 0 on binary but I have read in the past that there may be a hidden counter on some phones, not sure if the s2 is one of them, so if possible try triangle away to reset it (chainfire did a work round to reset any hidden counters) then flash back to stock.

Use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter while your phone is still rooted, then flash stock rom with Odin. Stock phone with flash counter showing 'Samsung Official' & 'Custom Binary Download = 0'. Sorted.
Edit - Re: a hidden counter, you're being paranoid.
OK so we go with the following order
Step 1 - Reset Binary using triangle away app
Step 2 - Install Stock firmware from sammobile.com
Step 3 - Should I do somthing with the Kernal as this is not stock?
If you knew the basics (as opposed to jumping in without knowing the 'how & why'), you'd know stock rom packages contain stock kernels, which overwrite any kernel you're currently running (just as the stock rom within said package replaces whatever rom you're currently running).

However once I do this will the phone remain unlocked to any network?

Does anybody have a solution to reseting the flash counter on the gs3 i9300 because I have tried EVERYTHING to reset this counter including using root triangle away and that doesn't work and I've tried just flashing the stock firmware back to the i9300 and that won't reset the counter and I even have a jig that's compatible with the s2, s3, s4 and that won't even reset the counter all the jig does is brings me into download mode but on my s2 it resets the counter and as of right now my counter is reading like 17 so could "somebody" Please tell me if there is some special way to reset this counter on the gs3 i9300, I'm even willing to give some money to who ever in this forum can tell me a way that this counter can be reset, and please no smart-a$$ Comments. But like I said anybody that gives me a working method to reset this binary flash counter I'll make it worth your time. Oh and like I said before, for some reason (root) triangle away does Not work on this phone so don't tell me to use that program.
Downgrade bootloader to BLFB, then use triangle away. Worked for me.

I'll give that a try right now but where would I find blfb bootloader at?

Disregard my last reply I've found the bootloader but I see this bootloader is for ICS and the current firmware on my i9300 is 4.3 jelly bean so how would I go about using this bootloader?

I believe that if I was to just flash this new bootloader to my gs3 with 4.3 on it I would hard brick the device because the blfb bootloader is for ics and I'm on jelly bean, so a Lil more help in how to go about doing this would be a big help.
Bootloader is irrelevant to firmware, I'm on 4.3 with BLFB bootloader, just don't use download mode afterward as it isn't SDS safe.

You could try XXELLA. Triangle Away seems to work fine with that bootloader, and it's SDS safe. I'm running it with no problems on my phone, and I have KitKat on my phone.
Hello, having the same problem with my I9300 , running MK7 booloader (4.3) and triangleaway isn't working . I found the XXELLA file to flash with odin, but is it really safe to downgrade from 4.3 Bootloader to a
4.1.2 one ?

I had the same problem a few days ago .... solve this ..
-wiped everything (settings, accounts, and cancel the backup, restore factory settings)
- Installed a stock room 4.3, using Odin-v3-09, again wiped all
-root with CF-Auto-Root-M0-m0xx-gti9300,
triangleaway installed this (https://www.dropbox.com/s/xbzgi7j1uor7e5k/triangleaway.apk)
- And it was ok
I hope it will work for you
OK , so i successfully downgraded to XXELLA , downloaded from here

TriangleAway worked perfect with this bootloader unlike the MK7 one that came with my 4.3 stock rom , after i saw it worked i flashed stock 4.3 again , and everything is perfect. needed to wipe data from the recovery but now device is like new . so thanks for everyone.

OK so I went with your instructions before I tried the others that were posted here because basically I already had the stuff you said I needed and I went through and did like you said and the first time it nothing happened so I went back into recovery and wiped everything again then went straight back to triangle away and tried it again and it worked and said 0 so as course now after putting in a new flash recovery it reads one now also I restored my backup I had from cwm and restored everything back to the way it was before I tried this and went back into download mode and it still reads 1 so I tried triangle away again after that restore and it wouldn't work so basically I guess the only way to get this to work is with it freshly reset with no info put into the device and then the flash counter will reset, so thank you for your help
Thank You for everybody's input, in the end I was able to reset the flash counter going by Razjaren's instructions then restoring back to my cwm backup, so thank you again everybody.
