Adding apps to flashable files - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So if I want to add apps like the note2 gallery to my port do I just put it in the app file zip it up and sign it?

Hey skinzy98, real quick, just wanted to let you know that your work in the development sub-forum is greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work!
Now to answer your question. If you're planning to inject an app into a ROM, then you can accomplish this by placing the .apk into the system/app directory inside your ROMNAME.zip, and that's it (assuming the ROM sets recursive permissions to the entire system/app directory). This would result in your injected app being installed as a system app. However, if you want it to be installed as a data app... Well, it's gonna' be a little more involved. For what you plan to do, installing it as a system app would probably be best anyhow. Good luck, and let me know if you need any help/have any questions. Always glad to help a bro out when I can.

You are going about it the right way, but beware some apps from different sources may in other files or framework.
Just fyi if you run into unexpected issues.
Good luck

[Q] (REQUEST) Dock Mode .apk

Can someone point me in the direction of, or provide for me an installable .apk file for DockMode 2.1.21? Somehow my Titanium Backup of that is corrupt or not allowing me to restore. And the ROM Im using has removed it.
I dont think this is an inappropriate request, but if it is by all means remove the post.

Thank you very much for the effort. I attempted to install it via apk installer, root explorer and ES File Explorer and it will not install. Using Root Explorer gets me a parsing error, and the other two installers simply fail to install.
I'll try again tomorrow if someone else hasn't.

Whats this apk for ? is it differnt docks or what?
This is the stock Android application that automatically starts when the phone is placed in a desktop dock.
Thanks again...
Anyone else??? Since most of these ROMS have this pulled out, there has to be someone who knows how to make the .apk installable.
Pretty please, willing to buy you a beverage of your choice if you can help me out.

and again I find my self at one of your abusive threads boy this is fun, you said your own a custom rom so why not here is a long shot go to the rom thread take a look and ask in there, and stop being a foul mouthed short tempered prick because frankly you may be making my evening quite fun but you aint going to get any help, and the problems you having with the kitchen maybe be something to do with you needing to be spoon fed information.
And no wear in this thread have you made "numerous" posts saying what rom you are on, except the one post you made after *****ing like a twat again.

What question? There's only one question; "What am I missing?".
A few braincells? Some manners? Some basic grammar? Self-control mechanisms?
Did I get it right? What did I win??

Taken from the Checkrom forum post I suggest you read about the rom you are using before making posts like this one again.
In regards to the kitchen make sure you are set to the correct server if its set to the old Revolution ROM 2.7.1 i would take a stab and say they wont work since they are built for XXKI3.
Also try removing cached packages from kitchen pro preferences.
Base XXKI4
Multi CSC
Deodexed
Zipaligned
no increasing ring for Phone.apk
resolv.conf added for faster gps lock
Much Improved an optimal Init.d scripts
Updated DK Engine for the upcoming kernel!
Tweaks to build.prop
JkayV12.1
Minor bug's fixed
smoothness to the core
Included libsqlite.so and libsqlite_ini.so from Android 2.3.7 (improves performance)
Included app_process and system_server from Android 2.3.7 (improves scrolling)
Included sqlite3
Maps.apk to v5.11 with global Navigation (ownhere/Brut.all)
added .salted_hash in sdcard/clockworkmod

Chrome apks

Here are some apks that change the icons on your home screen and your app drawer.
Thanks to Pfaffinator for the icons.
1 go to system/ app and copy your entire app file then place it on an sd card for backup if you want to revert back to your original icons.
2 copy these new apks to system/ app. Your phone will ask if you want to replace your old apk with the new one...tap yes then profit.
3 I do not know how to make a zip file yet as I am still learning.
4 I will add more as I theme more icons.
5 DISLAIMER : I am not responsible for your phone if something goes wrong.
Here are some screen shots

If you flash super Jelly, use the super Jelly updater to download a blank zip. You then use an archive manager like 7zip or winrar to place the apk's in the system/app folder. I think it has to be signed for JB, not sure how to do that tho.
Thanks for sharing tho. If these are someone else's work can you give them credit? If this is your work, nice job!
Edit: saw you said you were theming the icons. Sorry if I offended by suggesting this was another person's work

Sorry my mistake. I didn't make the icons. I put them in the apks to use with our phones. Thank you for making me aware that I needed to do that.

Pull the apks modified. Either adb pull system > w/e.apk. or do it via phone via a root powered file explore. Place the apks on your sdcard. Mount the device place on your computer. That download a theme or a mod zip. And archive into that make your changes etc flash to test then release as a theme. Message me about if you already haven't ill get to you as soon as I can.

Did it force close once or does it work correctly now? If it doesn't work correctly and you made a backup on your SD card of your original APks you can just pull the NFC apk only and put it back in system app.

Anyone figure out how to zip these yet? I would really like to use these but I'm not too good at this other method...nice work on these btw bro

Can someone who got these to work explain to me how they did it? I downloaded the YouTube file went to es file explorer copied the apk went to system/apps pasted it then it asked me if I wanted to overwrite I pressed yes it said it was installed successfully but when I go to my app drawer nothing changes...any help would be appreciated Tia
Edit: nevermind after I rebooted it changed..you should put that you need to reboot in the instructions so less educated people like me know that..thanks for these they are sweet and go with my chrome theme!

How Do I Port Apps To Other Phones?

Hey,
Well I have been more active on here lately and I am starting to want to contribute to the community
I have the S5 system and I wanted tot try (practice) porting the apps from that to the Note 2. I do know someone has done a few but I would like to give it a shot myself.

A lot of them require 4.4.2... But the basic concept behind porting apps is taking the apk you want..finding if it needs library files and maybe even some bin files as well..and then putting them in your system folder..if it FC's pull a log and see what else is needed

I tried this with the S5 music app and it wouldn't even install, I am guessing there are more files for it then? Where would I put these files once I have found them?

System/app.. You would have to delete your music apk or rename it .bak.. Not sure if they updated the libraries on that app but its possible.. Also changing the SDK version in the mainifest might solve some problems too

Pushing AOSP apk's to system/app

I've been trying to push some AOSP style apps to system/app but I keep getting force closes on them.
Examples include calculator.apk and mms.ask. Any idea why these apps won't work?

The S4 is a TouchWiz phone, not AOSP. The AOSP framework isn't there, so many AOSP apps won't work. That's probably true for most of them, actually.
What you're doing is kind of close to taking an iPad application and trying to flash it, then asking why it doesn't work.

Also, Samsung apps are in system/priv-app, not system/app. Some may work, some may not. Generally fixing permissions and ensuring file name matches should help.
I tried that too. Oh well. Guess I'll just settle with freezing stock apps and installing AOSP versions the regular way. Thanks for the help.

good luck...but like it was said, tw doesn't have ASOP framework as part of it
I've found a few apks that have been repackaged that I can simply install. Just trying to create the illusion of AOSP.
