Questions about Unlocking or Recovering from a Soft Brick? LOOK HERE BEFORE POSTING!! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I felt the need to create a thread explaining things a bit better. Lets get started shall we!!
1) As most folks know the I605 Galaxy Note 2 shipped with a locked bootloader. This means you Can Not flash any custom roms/kernels/ or recoveries until you unlock the bootloader!! Failure to comply will result in a yellow triangle stating "unsupported software detected"!
2) If you flashed custom software on your device without unlocking, please refer to Section 1B of my GUIDE in development section. This will bring your device back up and running in stock condition!!
3) Now you can proceed to Adams latest "Jailbreak" thread for for rooting/unlocking/flashing a custom recovery. Make sure to only use the method that applies to the firmware/bootloader version that was previously on your device.
VRAMC3 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066
VRALL4 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
VRALJB- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636 (Unless you purchased this device within the first month of release, and never accepted a OTA, Do Not use this link).
4) And last of all, folks never accept any OTA's!! There is no reason to!! Now that your device has been rooted, unlocked, and running twrp recovery, you can now download any latest update.zip from the dev section and flash in recovery. The Devs here are always fast at packaging up the OTA into a zip format so we can update via cwm or twrp recovery. There are a couple reasons why I prefer this method,
1. Future OTA updates may relock the device permanently! There is no gurantee a unlock method will be achieved for the next OTA.
2. .Zip roms are normally smaller, so they take less time to download and imo are easier to install.
3. OTA's can sometimes fail and soft brick the device.
So please read through this thread thoroughly and remember research twice, flash once! Hopefully this helps...:good:
**Also Note the VRUEMJ9 4.3 OTA update locked the bootloader and there is no current unlock method**

Error while using Casual R311b
Noob here. Just got my Note II, on VRALL4
I am trying to unlock using the Adam's instructions to the letter (and viewing the instructional video), but I keep getting
ERROR: Protocol initialisation failed!Your device should be rebooting into Android now.
The phone stays in download mode and never reboots back into Android. I've tried different USB ports, installed the drivers from Samsung Kies (I uninstalled the Kies software after getting the drivers). Tried searching through the instructional thread, but couldn't find any concrete answers. Not sure what to try next.

I haven't followed the new instructions yet, but have you tried manually turning your phone back on to see if it will just pick back up in the process?

The only way to get my phone to boot back into Android is to disconnect the USB cable, pull the battery, and boot it. After removing the USB cable, Casual still shows "DEVICE CONNECTED".

No, I don't believe this newest Casual uses Odin. It's just a(n almost) one-click solution. No checkboxes (see initial post in this thread for a link to the thread containing the new Casual).
Is there another way to root/unlock VRALL4? I'd be happy to try out more complex methods, as this doesn't seem to be working.

stuck on yellow triangle stating firmware problems
Hi all..i recently tried to unlock the bootloader however did not know the file i used was not compatible with the latest OTA. When using ODin the phone fails at the sboot.bin...now i can still get into the ODin menu but thats it. Ive been reading several threads and the only solution Ive seen was that the device would get its data wiped. However I have many sentimental things on the device, would there be a way for me to recover all that data. I thought I had backed all files onto my sd card but not all the files got transferred. Any help or tips would be appreciated thank you

try using root66 from section 1a of my guide it does not wipe data.

WARNING: Once youre unlocked dont use odin to flash custom ROMs.

The title says it all. Nothing good can come of flashing with Odin except returning to stock. Stick with CWM or TWRP flashable zip files. If you disregard this message you will end up with a locked device, or even worse, a hard bricked device. Please use Odin as a factory restore tool only. I'm concerned that after unlock using our methods that people will flash the wrong thing and cause problems in the future.
The unlock method we have provided is not a standard Bootloader Unlock. It is an IROM unlock. This means you can quite literally flash anything to your device without any sort of signature checks. It is important that you stay safe and try to stay away from Odin unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks for all the hard work

Yup! I can already see the threads starting.... It is good to know that we can still use Odin though cause I was under the impression that Odin was a no-go at this point... So flashing the factory image from imnuts would be the best resort to get back to stock if we needed to return a device?

In Androidstyle's guide thread, Adam asked him to point the unlock guide to his unlock thread, but I don't see an unlock thread from Adam, only the Revision3 thread which has no steps to unlock. I see the video Adam made, but my understanding is that the process has changed and the links to download Adam's ROM are dead on the Youtube page. Anyone have the link to Adam's unlock step by step guide?

It's in "Verizon Galaxy Note II Android Original Development". Go up one level and you'll see it. There are only two threads there so it shouldn't be too hard to find.
I don't mean to sound mean but if you really can't figure out how to get to his unlock thread do you really think it's a good idea to be unlocking your bootloader? Maybe you should just stick to a rooted image and read up and learn for awhile before jumping in over your head

To be fair, the distinction between "Android development" and "Original Android development" is new for many of us. I, too, was wondering how to get back to this thread since I tend to browse XDA through bookmarks instead of the site hierarchies. I didn't realize there was an "original Android development" section until after I double checked the name on the thread jumper. It's not that one is technologically illiterate (I got through all this in one fell swoop with no issues and have rooted and unlocked every phone I've owned since the G1), it's just that it's different. Last device I had didn't have a section for original development, so it wasn't immediately obvious to me (though I quickly understood what it was for). so cut him some slack and just kindly point him to the right direction. I know you said you weren't trying to sound mean, but if you really weren't trying to sound mean you could have just helped him out without all of the extra, unnecessary commentary. You know what they say about assumptions, after all.
Just got the Note 2 on verizon and loving it so much I'm going to hold off for a bit before unlocking & rooting. Normally on all my android phones that is done day 1... but this time w/ the dev community just now unlocking it, I think I'm going to wait a few weeks.
In context, imnuts has put out a Recovery flash-able version of CWM. If one tries his CWM but wants to go back to TWRP then currently it seems that one need to ODIN it. To Adam Outler's point it would be safer to have a Recovery flash-able version of TWRP. [?]

[Q] Can't Figure Out How to Root

I need help with rooting my phone. I have gone to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957155
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043636
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1884#tutorial
I first started out with Samsung Galaxy Note II Kit. But, the update said I needed to do something about unlocking my boot loader, so I went to the Adam Outtler page. But, he says in the first post that this won't work If you do it with an OTA update after January 18, 2012. Well, I didn't notice that first anyways and tried Odin, and all it would do mainly was fail, or setup connection would take forever, and even Casual says:
/system/bin/sh: su: not found
noroot
DEVICE IS NOT ROOTED! ROOT YOUR DEVICE! Install any VRALJB ROM --Adam Outler
What I think I need to do is uninstall the OTA update, but most people I have seen do it through a rooted phone, but I don't have one yet. I have no idea what to do, and I am really confused and don't want to hard brick or screw up my phone. Could anyone help me with this? I am sorry if I am being stupid about this, but the only thing I ever rooted was a NOOK tablet which was simple.
P.S. I am sorry but if anyone respond between the times of 10am-12pm today, and 4pm-12am today, I will not be able to respond due to work arrangements I have for today.
First confirm the baseband: System Settings > About Phone > Baseband. If it shows VRALL4, you have the update and need to use the updated root and unlock method here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2118348
Just go slowly and follow the directions (measure twice and cut once), its pretty easy. Good luck.
start at section 1 of my guide...then if youwant to unlock follow adams thread. make sure to use his latest "jailbreak" method(the one linked in my guide).
If you on the latest software from Verizon, just use Adams guide. That's all I did. Need any help let me know!

the last thing i would recomend is using anything other than adams or my thread. also the op may just want root, which he can simply place root66 in odin and be done. the latest software adds no benifit other than if you like to internet bench race.

[Q] Unlocking Bootloader Causal Says good, but did not boot to unsecure?

All I have read and re-read and re-read and cant seem to find an answer to my issue.
I a few months ago purchased a Verizon SN2. I have been reading the forums now and was attempting to unlock my bootloader. My issue is using Adams Causal method for VRALJB.
I was successful at injecting the PIT, and running Casual Injection 9, but instead of rebooting into unsecure boot recovery the phone just completed a normal reboot. Casual at that time told me success.
Now I have gone back and re flashed the baseline bootloader provided in his link to attempt it all from the start, but causal is telling me hell no because of a bootloader miss match?
The phone is running fine, but I am worried that since I am new to this that I could easily brick my phone.
Could someone please point me in the proper direction. Thanks so much in advanced.
Use the newest method

bingo! and instead of adam mucking up my thread frequently it would be nice if he would just close the old thread or make note to use the new "jailbreak" method only.
That worked...sorry for being such a noob.
When I read the new way I guess I did not assume it worked for VRALJB, because it clearly states VRALJB is working with the old method.
Note I also had to update Java since the most recent time, which I thought was up to date.
Thanks all again...

Let's clarify. You tried to install cwm, it failed and now your phone says unauthorized software take to Verizon? Your post honestly doesn't make sense. Oh and now Odin won't see your phone?
If this is correct then your phone is far from screwed up. Very common it's what happens when you don't unlock the bootloader. So let's get your phone seen by Odin. Are you in download mode? What os is your computer? Have you trired different usb ports? Are drivers installed?

You can't be on aroma. Aroma is a method used by ROM devs to allow the user to select options during install of their ROM. There are two recoveries, CWM and TWRP.
So you are seeing unauthorized software? Then your bootloader is locked, if it was unlocked then we'll figure that out later.
You should see gadget serial. Is it installing the drivers for that? How did you install drivers, Windows update our manually?

Let's clarify. You tried to install cwm, it failed and now your phone says unauthorized software take to Verizon? Your post honestly doesn't make sense. Oh and now Odin won't see your phone?
If this is correct then your phone is far from screwed up. Very common it's what happens when you don't unlock the bootloader. So let's get your phone seen by Odin. Are you in download mode? What os is your computer? Have you trired different usb ports? Are drivers installed?
Oh ya Here's A Little reading material for you

Crud I meant CleanRom 4.8, not Aroma. Not sure what I was thinking.Yeah bootloader locked for sure. When I try to access recovery I get the System software not authorized....etc. I let it automatically install then tried manual install, removed kies, added kies. what do you mean by windows update?

Okay, thanks for clarifying. That is a little strange then. I mean did you let Windows download the drivers for you, which you answered. You can try to put phone in download mode and keep plugging and unplugging it (give it time to recognize it first). There was a guy that said it eventually just recognized hos phone after 16 times. You did restart your computer correct?

So I think I messed up somehow. I tried to flash from Aroma to CWM 10.1. I wiped well but CWN failed to install and somehow it seems the bootloader locked and Odin will not see my Verizon Note 2. How the hell am I supposed to fix this, I dont think the Verizon still will help meh.

Someone woke up on the butthurt side of bed this morning
You're most likely not bricked if it will turn on at ALL! Here's what you need to do:
1. Make sure your computer is setup with the proper drivers/ODIN.
2. Go here and download the stock ODIN image
3. Get a different USB cord you know works or try the most rearest USB port and put your phone in ODIN mode as stated above.
4. If ODIN doesn't recognize your phone, restart the computer with it plugged in and unplug it and replug it...
5. Flash ODIn in the PDA, not the Phone section (Follow the directions given by Imnuts).
That should fix you up, if it doesn't, chances are you missed a step. Good luck:victory:

You didn't win, since you don't know what you did wrong. You should read a lot more before you mess up this phone. Give it time and you probably will be in the same place again. Read, read read read read and did I mention read???? Better luck though with your new device

Well did ALL that before. Surprise none of it worked. I'm not going to repeat the same process over and over. I'm pretty sure I know why I couldn't get it to work, and I know what went wrong even though I'm not sure how managed it. And getting a new scratch free phone for no cost sounds pretty good.

If you went thru VZW and they are shipping you a new phone then it isnt new. They send out refurbished phones as replacements, I think they referr to them as CLN phones.
