GPS isn't pin pointing my location - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I'm on 2.13 firmware and radios.
See my pic? I just kinda gravitate around the area and the circle around me doesn't close up...

What rom are you on? Have you tried disabling all location services except gps to see if that works? You could also try the ##GPSCLRX# code in the dialer (use mls reader to find your mls), or download gps status from the play store and clear/download agps data.

Stock with Goodies 2.08. Never has been a problem until today. I have recently upgraded to the latest firmware and radios, but had to downgrade in order to run this particular ROM, which I can't part with. I will try these things you mention.

Still experiencing this issue.
I have since upgraded to the latest firmware.
Any suggestions on trouble shooting for what is causing this or possible tests, fixes, anything!? :silly:
Edit: After using the apps mentioned above, the issue is still present and I notice no fix whatsoever.
Any ideas of that the values are supposed to be? That way I can troubleshoot if I have an issue.

Where are you when you are trying to pick up the GPS signal? A lot of factors play into getting a good GPS signal. How's the weather? Do you have cloud cover or is it clear? Are you inside or outside, near a window?
You can try an app called GPS test to check out your GPS signal. It will give you an indication of how well (or bad) of a signal you are picking up.
Here are two screenshots using my phone. The first is inside about 10 ft away from any windows. The second is about 3 ft from the window. You can see the difference it makes the further you go into a building.

Yeah sometimes when I don't get a lock I'll open GPS test and that will lock. Once it does i'm fine going back to maps.
I've never had a problem getting a gps lock on sense or aosp. Some phones just have a hard time with it. I don't know why.

Still no good. See attached.
I don't know what could've caused this except where I downgraded firmwares, to flash an old Rom. Which I said I'm running the latest currently. But nothing else is acting whacky at all. Or unless it's just a defective evo?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

Oh, and both app captures were from outside under a clear sky.

I'm thinking you should be pulling in a better signal if you were outside on a clear day. I believe you should be pulling in 10 ft or better accuracy on a clear day.
Have you tried removing the rear cover and checking the connections to the cover? If this doesn't help, you may have a defective unit.

What're my options then with an s-off'd device?

GPS Signal Strength and Quality

One of the things I really appreciate about my EVO is the strength of the GPS when using Google Navigate - especially after my dismal experience with the Samsung Moment.
Although I've seen mostly positive reviews about call quality, signal strength, processor speed, etc., I haven't seen anyone on the forum comment about the Photon's GPS. Can any of you former EVO users comment on how the Photon's GPS compares to the EVO?
Thanks,
Flipper

I fired it up for the first time the other evening, to get directions somewhere. It got lock in under 30 seconds, which is satisfactory for me. My Evo was inconsistent and definitely took much (with stock drivers).
coming from the Vibrant here and anything is better then what I had. But as far as I can tell GPS locks on and really sticks. It is accurate to as it places me in my house and fallows when I walk around outside.
actually got a lock in my office building through the roof once, but never watched to see if it would wonder.
The gps is very fast to lock on and solid. My evo 3d before the photon was horrendous, wouldn't ever get a accurate reading inside and even outside was bad. My original evo was very good as well, both the evo 4g and photon will get a very accurate reading inside almost instantly and even follows me around when i walk.

My Evo4G was also excellent, but the MoPho is even better. It bested my Evo in all tests I've run.
Gps works great here too! Coming from the OG I noticed that lock ons are faster. Only issue is while in the car dock, and selecting my location the image loads in sections...its kind of crappy but I don't think its a gps issue rather a software issue.

My Photon GPS is horrible, especially compared to my EVO. If I'm driving and put the phone in my lap it looses signal until I hold it up to the windshield or slide back the sunroof cover. My EVO rarely lost the signal once it acquired a lock.

Well, based on everyone else's experiences and their posts on this forum and the android forum, it sounds like you may have a bad phone. If I were you, I'd probably bring it in and have someone at Sprint look at it.

I completely agree, I logged on just now to create a post about this exact thing, not only that I can put in an address and it works great. Then on to the next addresses and it won't even lock, just sits there. I am in sales and I bet no one on these forums uses navigation more than I do. On the photon it just sucks, period. One of the many reasons I am waiting for root. I absolutely love this phone, but the gps sucks.
If someone could post some tweaks maybe that would be great because I'm not trying to do what motorola wants us to do and just reboot every time.
Also, it isn't the phone, I have had two do this same exact thing, and my buddy at sprint let me use his for a few and his ended up doing the same thing.
I think most of the people commenting here have used it maybe twice.

I use my GPS whenever I'm in the car with Trapster and I also use Foursquare and the Photon has been rock solid. My Epic was a pain in the butt trying to rely on any kind of a quick GPS lock and with the Photon it just works whenever I need it. Now when I open Foursquare and go to check in someplace my list is up to date even when I'm in an area I've never been to without having to keep refreshing.

for the guy having problems, could it be you are in some type of dead zone? Or maybe its solar flares? I have not tried much but did want to add that for those testing in your home don't forget to turn off the location setting. The one that will use wifi and/or cell towers to triangulate your location.
My GPS does not work well either. It has been taking about 10 seconds to get a signal, and seems to always have a 1-2 second delay. I had one day I had to turn the phone off and back on to get a signal. I have tried the newest release and am getting the same thing. My EVO got a lock instantly and never had any delays. Even my old Touch Pro had faster GPS locks.

I think you should return the phone because its obviously defective. I'm returning mine because when the phone is shutdown it doesn't startup immediately when I press the power button. It actually takes a minute before I can use it.
Seriously, mine gets a lock in about 10 seconds inside the house while my Evo took about 15 seconds. When I traveled with the Evo and I turn it on in a new city, it could take 30 seconds to lock. I've not traveled with the mopho yet. 10 seconds to get a signal is nothing to complain about.
I have had no issues with my GPS, gets a lock quickly and never loses the signal afterwards. I've used it probably about a dozen times since I've gotten the phone a week ago and hae pretty much exclusively used the Telenav App and not really tried Google Nav.
My GPS is hit and miss
Comparing with my EVO 4G, this Photon GPS is not better. My EVO 4G performed very well. This photon may loose signal during driving in the tunnel but could acquire signal quick enough after leaving the tunnel. I had to disable and enable GPS and it locked right away. It happened several times. Not sure if worth to bring back to store.

GPS has stopped working

Anyone have GPS totally die on this phone? This is not another "my GPS is slow" thread. It appears to be broken. GPS has been awesome throughout 8 months of a thousand flashes. Flashed MIUI a couple days ago and it was 5+ minutes to get a lock. Tried Pool Party, never got lock. Tried VGB, same. Flashed back to ED05 stock, Never got a lock after 30+ minutes sitting on my car dash. Put TSM back up, same. I have tried multiple kernals, tried GPS aids (for the first time ever). GPS is gone. I follow all directions for all ROMs and never have major problems. I'm stumped.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
I have tried the "secret menu" but it force closes when I enter the GPS config number. Could the hardware itself be fried?
Just out of curiosity, what gps aids have you tried? I just used "fasterfix" for the first time today and that drastically improved my lock time. Also GPS status and calibrate your compas may help. Just some suggestions... I hope either one helps!

I have tried GPS status, even paid for a GPS Doctor repair app. None of them can do anything. Gps status had zero satellites after 2 hours in my car dock. I flashed back to ED05 and tried the Verizon "techs" at my local store. It's sad when I knew more about my phone than they did. In other words, zero help there. Was hoping to wait until spring, but it looks like a Nexus is in my future.
Did you try faster fix? Maybe it will help you get by for the next 6 days? With the way your talking though, it sounds like a hardware issue.

How is your data acting? Is it kinda flaky as well? Maybe you could try logging on vzw website and swapping esn numbers to refresh your data. After several flashes, sometimes I notice data/gps/anything network related will get flaky or slew down dramatically and an esn swap fixes me up. Hope you get back up.
~~~~There is no spoon~~~~
ESN swap, hadn't thought of that. I'll report back, thanks
ESN swap didn't work. Today I went back to eclair and ota'd back to ED05, still no go. It's dead Thanks for the idea though.
Update : GPS is back. Used the RFS formatting utility from the Heinz Dev section on rootz. Installed a froyo based rom, gps is back working.
Possible jb patch in the works
Just returned from taking care of my bill at a corporate sprint store in Detroit Michigan area, and brought up concerns about issues since jb was released. Before I was able to tell my personal issues since the update the couple techs that were at the front door greeting/mingling with customers, told me they have been notified that a patch is being worked on for the Bluetooth, navigation, proximity sensor, wifi and various glitches others have been reporting. This was all said before I even mentioned those issues that myself and others on this forum have brought up. They've even been instructed to stop doing replacement handsets for people with the issues. So to me it sounds like the issues have been noticed/verified finally and HTC/sprint may be releasing something soon. Sounds legit considering the tech's themselves named off the issues and seemed to know a bit about the problems without me saying anything. Figured I'd pass on this tidbit of info and hopefully it becomes a reality.
Update 01/11 called HTC and they have a bulletin that's been sent out that proximity sensor was specifically being worked on (news for stock users at least)..the nav issue the guy said wasn't a for sure thing because it might be a google dropping the ball thing/capatability issue
I have to flash back to an ics rom then back to jelly bean while wiping as little as possible just to get mhl-hdmi adapter to work. And sometimes at that. Most of the time I have to reset the phone 3 times, unplug, plug in cable to phone. It just blows balls! I am about to just go back to ics and stay there. Jelly bean or at least this iteration of it sucks. Not to mention the worse battery life? Why are we excited about jb anyway? It looks good and sounds nice, but it is just like its abbreviation (jb) jailbait!
Does anyone else agree with me or are you all on the google strain of bud? Here's my list of issues over ics: Battery hog! Mhl-hdmi previously mentioned, New usb connection manager screwed my car audio. Have to update busybox everytime I reset just so root explorer displays remaining space in sd card.
I will quit my rant now though I guess. No one at sprint or htc or most the people here even give a rats **** about these issues because i obviously must be a noob who cant wipe and flash a rom properly or my phone has issues so I must be retarded or something. Tired of those attitudes on xda. But thats another topic. Good day to u all!
I updated to JB and I don't have any of the issues you are talking about. After hearing some of your experiences I think I will wait until a patch comes out to update my wife's phone.
I like JB on this phone. Google now is a welcome feature. Initially I experienced shorter battery life, but after adjusting the settings in Google Now I would say my battery life went back to normal or possibly even better than before.
The one thing I don't like about JB is the in scrolling background, but all the pluses more than make up for it.
I turned off any cards that would frequently update.
Ex. Traffic, weather and nearby places
I can't say for sure that these consume extra battery, but ever since adjusting the settings my battery has been performing well.
It's currently at 50% after 12h 36m off the charger with medium use.
I wish they would just fix this dam Proximity Sensor. I hate my calls hanging up when it touches my face and how it wont show the screen when I wish to hang up.
The CM10 proximity fix woked for me.
[MOD] [CM10] Proximity Sensor Fix
I tested using Proximity Sensor Finder before and after. Before nothing happened, after it went from 9 to 0 when covered.
I've seen all those issues the MeanBean Thread.
All 4.1 JB Devices Broke Bluetooth Voice Dial. As far I know only 4.2 fixes it.
I'd be really impressed if Sprint released 4.2 let alone any update.
I posted a [MOD] in the development section to get Cyberon to be the Default when you click the bluetooth button and it works great, better than it ever has and no longer relies on the Network. And I'm nolonger forced to keep my contacts in gmail. I prefer keep them only in my work's ExchangeMail account.
Nav has worked for me so far but I have not used it too heavily.
As far as Bluetooth Reliability during a Call JB is MUCH better. ICS would drop bluetooth headset as I passed WIFI HotSpots.
WIFI has been an issue on this device since day 1. JB release doesn't seem much better or worse, but it does seem different, but usable for me. I've had it get stuck once and would not let go of WIFI as I drove away, which jams the whole phone up until you shut WIFI off.
The Proximity Sensor seems to be a calibration issue. My guess is the OTA update might have accindentally wiped each devices calibration or something. You can recalibrate it. The default cal works for people. I have not had the issue or it's not a big enough issue for me to care.
Well I can verify after getting a couple refurbs because of the jb updates/roms having nav crashes (first refurb to replace my new launch date phone being a launch date activated one with nav crashes and faulty strip in touchscreen), I finally have one that the navigation works flawlessly on so far with several jb Roms I tried....the refurb date on this phone was in December with no usage/data etc....and I was the first to activate the phone (maybe damaged casing on phone etc and never was sold)...so the pattern of newer built elte's seems to be a pattern...at least for me...it was a battle to get a working phone but paid off in the end...
Updated Radio and now no GPS
I recently started using my wifes old fascinate after I broke the screen on my Droid Razr. I had rooted it for her in the past and was running AOKP ICS. The phone was performing well but gps tracking seemed to be seriously lacking. So messing around with it I noticed it was running the ED05 radio. I figured i'd upate to EC09 and see if that would improve anything. I used to Odin to flash EC09 rebooted phone and I had nothing 0/0 fix/sats in GPS status. I toggled it on and off and tried resetting GPS data and let it sit for a long time and got no lock.
So I said what the heck I wanted to update to Jellybean so lets flash a new rom and see if the clean install helps. So I flashed hellybean from recovery and the rom runs great but still no GPS. So i'm thinking okay..weird...let's try another radio. Tried flashing EH03 and same issue. So figured i'd flash back to ED05 and hopefully that would do the trick. Well now I'm back on ED05 and the phones been sitting for 10 minutes running GPS status and still hasn't found a single sattelite.
Any ideas of something to try? I use GPS for tracking a lot and really want to get this thing working. I am out of ideas.
Maybe you should try the app GPS Test by Chartcross. Install it, go to settings, and hit Clear AGPS.
Thanks for the feedback. I eventually got it to work and felt like an idiot. The trick? Walk outside...
I did a full factory reset and reflashed hellybean tried some more radios and was about ready to throw the phone at the wall when I said what the heck lets just go outside and see what happens. Walk outside and was locked within 10 seconds.
For some reason the fascinate GPS will just not work sitting on my desk at work. My razr had no issues here so I guess that's why I was expecting it to at least find something. I guess this GPS receiver is just weak.
The wavelength GPS is on has the property of not being able to go through buildings. While this phone's GPS is pretty rotten in this case it's not really Samsung's fault.
Retired Thunderbolt and using the GPS
Have a retired HTC Thunderbolt (S_OFF, Rooted, Liquid smooth ICE Rom) I upgraded to a HTC DNA a week ago. I would like to use the thunderbolt with GPS and Wifi to play Ingress on. The Issue how ever is that after the phone lost its cellular service I cannot get a GPS lock left it on for 4 hours using GPS toolbox waiting for a lock that never happened anyone got any ideas on how to get the GPS to lock with out the aGPS cell service?
I haven't experienced this problem specifically since mine is still in service, but I'm sure someone else more informed will know. I would check and make sure all of the contacts on the back of the case are clean and flush with the phone. Yesterday I had a similar problem and it was because I hadn't snapped the case all the way back on.
In the next few days I should be making a new CM9 build with a kernel that does not have a working radio, but does fix other issues. I'm thinking it will be useful for those in your situation who like AOSP, but don't have a need for the radio any longer. I'll try to remember to let you know when that happens.
Cool I will be looking for it I was thinking about trying a radioless build or regressing the radio RUU to a incomatible with the rom I am using to see if that would work but I didn't know if the GPS chip was on the same chip as the radio.
I just built a fresh CM9 with the non-working radio and tested it. The GPS works without cell service and I was able to get 10 satellites according to GPS Status. The build worked fine as long as I had it installed, but I can't guarantee anything long-term. Worst case you can try the normal CM9 build since the GPS is the same on both of them.
Will ask the obvious did you go under GPS settings and make sure the standalone GPS was checked? If it is then I would say the issue is with that ROM. It sounds like only the verizon gps option is checked as thay uses cell tower triangulation to get a location fix. I never had an issue using GPS on a deactivated phone.
Sent from my Infected Rezound using Tapatalk 2
You must have something screwed up, GPS and cellular service have nothing to do with each other. Might want to consider flashing a new rom or something just so you are guaranteed to be using one that fully works with gps 100%
Try to pry up on the little golden tabs under your battery cover. Those are the antenna for the GPS and if they don't make good contact to the battery cover then you won't get a GPS lock. Be very very careful not to break the little tabs.
Sounds like the aosp glitch of a 50/50 chance of having GPS to work. Try flashing a sense ROM then if you get a lock. Flash your aosp ROM and should work.
