Was jellybean worth updating - Motorola Droid RAZR

Just wondering was jellybean worth updating to I have yet to update because I cannot see loosing foxfi, plus I have thoughts of rooting but really don't care to root because I am still on ice and foxfi is alive and well.
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk 2

If you want any new roms to work, i guess yes.

My opinion is YES, i am on euRETAIL jellybean unrooted stock (couse i lost root), but it is better than ics stock.
Battery is about the same as ics hard to say (i think on idle battery is same and on use it drains little faster but its becouse stock settings 1.2ghz cpu and project butter)
Perfomance is superb becouse of project butter mainly.
The only bad thing as always is software and things like programs and new stuff that not all will like and ofcourse some old stuff got removes like usb mass storage (dont know why ), but is a pain in the ass.

It's like night and day. ICS on the RAZR was a disaster and the JB OTA makes up for it entirely.

I wouldn't say night and day, but for sure the interface is smoother, and much more polished. Battery ... Can't say yet ... Updated yesterday and I keep waking the screen up every few minutes just to make sure that the new font is still looking good

LOL the font part cracked me up for 5 mins laugh.

Yes I am sure jb is better then ics but it will not run foxfi thats the only thing keeping me on ics, and besides I am trying hard not to root until I am forced to.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2

Well if you are on ics plus supercharger script, no need to go jb i think, because jb still lags here and there, only less. But with moto's ics quite a fluid experience, only memory tweak needed to be added.
I myself is using jb though, and because my wifi tethering is working fine, no need for foxfi though, and if you're into the camera mode, the panorama one is fantastic in jb.

Lost a couple things
Where is my increase volume alarm setting? Also, I lost my sleep mode. Anyone else lose this? Maybe even care that they are gone?

In my opinion Jb is laggier.

For me it was really worth it!! (I was using D-wiz 3.0.2, and ICS EU Stock both laggy as hell)
Now I'm on Eu leak (retail)
I've managed to restore root after update. I've noticed I'm one of the few lucky ones.
I'm quite impatient person.
Laggy phones fly against the wall. ]:->
For me JB is blessing. It's fast as hell,
Especially camera app now starts a lot faster, Overall responsiveness of the UI is much better.
Performance is higher, but not by much. I've got above 75MFLOPS in Linpack, and 7700+ points in AnTuTu. (stock JB vs. stock ICS)
I've noticed no battery life improvement (but I think it needs few days to settle)
First charge was 21h30min with 3h10min screen usage.
Much better GPS fix and sattelites are now visible!
What's more: I'm quite sure that the sound quality both in calls and music is much better now! (I have good earphones and my ears are quite discriminating too)
I've checked what version of Radio is used: it almost identical to the "old" and "new" U.04.10.00R, and completely differrent to U_04.12.00R and U_04.11.01P. (i've compared them with WinMerge).
So I'd call it U.04.10.00R ver.3.0 ;P
Now I need only 1% battery mod (wich won;t disable my root) and I'll be perfectly happy with my RAZR
What's pissing me off:
*ugly Contacts (Thank God I'm using Go Contacts!)
*laggy start of IM+ (might by connected to some FB problem, because Facebook app also starts VERY long (like 30seconds?).
*screen rotation speed also leaves a lot to be desired.

No more sleep mode, mp3's gone from alarm clock. Anyone know how to fix?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2

about sleep mode I can't tell you,
but alarms you can put in /sdcard/media/audio/alarms/ folder (or /ext_card/... if you wish)...

I'm on the Vodafone EU leak now (from Germany) and it's way more usable then the ME Retail ICS ROM I had before, but the battery life isn't the same, it's a little worse. Then again, the ICS ROM was ****ty, it had a lot of bugs and sometimes I would get frustrated because of them. But I would immediately remember how long the battery lasted and everything was fine

I got Alarm Clock Extreme on the Amazon App Store as one of their free featured apps. It has a feature you can turn on to enable the crescendoing alarm (increasing volume). Highly recommend the app!

How about main things?
BAD: The contacts "people app", is WHITE (UGLY) backgroud, while in ICS it was in black (NICE), as everything else in RAZR. Now when you switch between "people" and "dialer" menus it looks UGLY, because its day ant night. Impression is that "people" is ripped from another phone with white theme, and thrown into RAZR - I dont understand how they let it slip through?? Especialy when You are in your bed at night, its so cool to have black themes, and now Your eyes are blinded, because EVERYTHING in RAZR is BLACK, except people app. WTF? SOOO BAD. And "Dialer's" favourites does not populate with all contacts - SOO STUPID, because I used to use only "Dialer" as it contained everything (recent calls, favourites, and all contacts), now I have to use both apps all the time, and as I said, its even more furstrating, because they use different themes, and its impossible to change them. Also messages app is now UGLY compared to ICS. Toggle widgets removed - if I want to switch data, I have to go into data usage menus - SOOO stupid. When I hit "Switch off phone" it asks if I reaaly want to do that - ANNOYING/STUPID. When I want to tur on gps, it also asks again - ANNOYING/STUPID.
GOOD: Works way more smoother, gallery app now is normal - not lagging when zooming, browser (not chrome) works better, smoother. Some more transition effects between all menus. Camera shutter is a tiny bit faster.

About the White, if you use the Verizon one, it is black. so it's different between ROMs. actually just Contacts.apk styling if you're willing to mod

Hi, thanks for answer. So, when the root will be available (I lost root), will it be possible to just copy in the Verizon's black "people" and "dialer" in to the system? Or maybe now it would be possible to disable existing contacts app, and install Verizons contacts.apk from storage? In that case maybe someone could be so kind and rip that verizons .apk for me to download, would be veeery nice.
Thanks!

Are all atrixs laggy?

I have only had y atrix a few days and am starting to get really fed up with how laggy the device is.
I have installed the updates as advised by the handset and even trien using a 3rd party launcer (launcher pro and adw ex) but still have the same problems.
The biggest thing that frustrates me is when i am trying to type a email and it constantly laggs between typing words.
mine is a uk handset on orange network.
any advice how i get over this...do i need to root it and remove certain blootware or upgrade to android 2.3?/
please advise me with links etc to how i get over this
Try freezing the motorola bloatware through titanium backup. Do a search in the development forum to find the thread.
Could make the difference. Will certainly boost battery life!
Sent from my Motorola Olympus using XDA Premium App.
Is it laggy over all or just when typing? my Atrix is not laggy at all but certain keyboards cannot keep up. IMO Swiftkey BETA in the market is pretty fast, try another keyboard out.
Use cache mate should kill alott of the lagg
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
No lag here. But yea another keyboard might help.
I noticed that it's app dependent. In some apps its fast, and other apps its laggy/sluggish. The native SMS/MMS texting client slugs behind in screen refresh on the keyboard. Other apps go smooth. I am using BETTER KEYBOARD 8 (paid version), instead of the native keyboard.

lags when sliding between different screens, tried it with standard launcher and also launcher pro in the hope that would be quicker...same problem.
i also fin that it lags badly when typing.just dosent keep up and i am by no means the fastest typer.
phone is standard apart from the launcher, standard keyboard. has the latest over the air update on it.
Hard reset after an OTA update? Cures 99% of problems.. no lag here btw

My runs perfect with lp plus, you have to much running in the background probably! Better 8th & swift are great I have both, using swift now as I feel it's a little better for me.
I had to uninstall Launcher Pro Plus because it took like 3 seconds for a swipe on the screen (the first/second times) to move. It was unbearable.
The original launcher has a lower FPS but at least it works. It sucks in comparison to LPP but if it works, it beats just about anything.
With Blur, things are significantly laggy.
With Launcher Pro, the default animation times create a lot of useless lag, so, under LP preferences, I changed the animations times to instant (eg. zero) or near instant, and I have absolutely no lag anywhere anymore. This is on rooted stock 1.8.7.
its the stock apps. they arent optimized for our phones. if you ran the 2.3.4 you could tell. the keyboard or anything didnt lag on there. even though its buggy.
install better keyboard, that doesnt lag for me. i use swype and it doesnt lag. also install the TWlauncher in themes&apps. it doesnt really lag at all, smooth as butter.
thanks for the reply
i will give the suggested options a try
The new swype beta crashes my phone... it was great except for emails and passwords.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is. This post might have errors as I hate touchscreen keyboards.
Laggy?
Several issues to take into account:
The launcher that you use. I use None, so that takes the burden off my cpu a lot
The ROM. Stock 2.3.4 is sloww. but can try Ninja or others
The app killer. Try use one that does the job of getting rid of stray processes at least on an hourly basis. Android Assistant is the one I use.
Try and use Start Up auditor, and make sure you dont have unwanted code getting into the mess.
If you have apps in your ext SD that is also a problem.. mine are all in internal SD.
As one previous post mentioned try and freeze unwanted bloatware.
Believe it or not, if your battery is not in a good shape, that will put a burden on the CPU.
Use SetCPU and create profiles. Dont let the phone run out of memory.. that is also a killer. If u use LP, try ant leave it in memory. See if that improves things.
Use Elixir and see who is bugging you.
cheers !
my 2c (AT&T model but in Australia)
- stock froyo = laggy. Launcher pro or ADW helps.
- stock gingerbread = mostly fixed, would be fine for most IMO. Launcher pro flies. Blur is still there however sucking valuable juice and cycles
The ultimate solution? unlock BL and custom ROM. There is nothing wrong with this phone's hardware, its motorola's build that lets it down.

ICS contacts widget vs gingerbreads

Hello all. I'm running the LATAM ICS on a Rogers RAZR and was wondering if there was a seeing I'm missing or if the favorite contacts widget is supposed to be slightly different

I haven't tried ICS yet but from some utube razr ics review i saw the widget there(hoping you mean the pulldown widget for the favorite contacts-i love this one). The only thing is that it doesn't have,is the cool animation that had on gb. Correct me if im wrong.
Yes, GB version is a lot better. But I won't stay in GB for that only..

I won't stay in gb either...but gb looks better? I hate the simple tron/neonlike ics.Tbh i havent tried ics....but..i liked the animations in gb,i liked the open/recent apps menu(i dont really care about the previews, i wanna see all in 1 screen, n razr had more than the usual 6 or 8 apps- 20 apps in one screen n it was great). The dialer suxx(same functions in dialer and people in ics1 app), instead of 1 app?).Plus its ugly n simple imo.Pull down menu is ugly too(gb was better) and without wifi etc shortcuts
ICS is the way to go though cause some apps i would like to try are on ics only.
I hope uot kitchen will be fully avail for ics(add lots of razr-themers :laugh.
Well, thats my likes , i guess.
It looks the same to Mee..

It is slightly different. Pulldown animation is off. The contact icons are smaller. They have added more contacts. I personally liked GB favorite contact widget but this is not bad either.

It was the only reason I was thinking about sticking with the stock launcher since I loved the widget in gb, but in ics it is slow and doesn't have the effect it used to when you tried to view more of your contracts. That's too bad... Trying to find a replacement but so far no luck.

Tablet mode

So I decided to try tablet mode just out of curiousity. I read that it makes non-sense launchers smoother. Well it does. For sure. Maybe not much but its enough to make go launcher Buttery smooth. So another thing I noticed is battery life? It increased? It could just be me but I find it odd that it was such a notocable difference. I'm sitting at 73% after a full days work in a building that barely gets reception. Usually by this point I have 50% left. So this left me wondering, could systemui have been poorly coded by HTC to the point where it drains a lot of battery? I know it seems ridiculous but I implore some one to try it before they say I'm crazy. Only because I may well be. Haha. So my question is, is there a way to get tablet mode to run on ics without forcing 192 dpi. Honestly the whole phone seems more usable and the quick settings I need are already in the stock ics notification bar. And whatever was missing I have in there using power controls a free app on the market. There must be some kind of edit to force tablet without going to 192 dpi.

That's what I'm talking about! Tablet mode has been my daily for the longest time and I agree that it definitly helps out with battery life and with smoothness of launchers (especially Apex!). Sadly there is no way just yet of getting the phone to run Tablet mode without forcing the DPI to 192. I know that the Galaxy nexus has their ways of doing it, I tried getting it to go myself and no luck so far. One thing I want to get working is the Pop-up screen when you connect to the PC.

Usually it depends on the App that you use to change the dpi, plus you need a launcher other than sense installed (you can have sense and something else like Go, ADW, or Apex.) I use the App call LCD Density Modder (Icon is a Monitor with a blue screen). Also It depends on the Rom that you are using as well. Some Rom's do not have the Icons in the SystemUI.APK to support Tablet Mode (Especially Sense 4 ROMS). As long as you meet all those steps you should be able to get it working with minimal problems. As stated above the only problem I run into is getting a force close when connecting phone to PC, the Pop-up that lets you select your connection mode doesnt work, you have to set your default connection type to whatever your going to use before connecting, and set it so it doesnt ask you what you want when connecting.

You cannot do this on any sense 4 based Rom. You need an ics sense 3.6 to be able to do it. Plus you MUST have a different launcher other than sense.

Hey man sorry for the delay, So the notifications quick keys is an app called "power controls" it is free and it's honestly pretty great. if you check the settings of the app there is an option to have the power controls stay in your notification bar. go into the app from your launcher and put a check mark in the box for notification widget. then click the pin. then click the slider looking button and you can check off which buttons to add. Closest I've come to CM7 settings in drop down.
it uses the built in accessibility features of ics to do it. this and SlimRom or any variant is the closest I have been able to get to AOSP. throw that in with tablet mode and GO-SMS stripped of all their special features except themeing and you're pretty much there. I may try GoContacts as well but the last time I did (with my evo shift) it was laggy so I haven't bothered yet. Especially since this device as a whole is waaaay more laggy then my shift in every regard. I can't imagine it would play well.
Also for standard DPI the GoKeyboard is quite nice and responsive, much more so than AOSP. These are of course my personal feelings so it may just be perceived and not reality. I used to hate GODev stuff... but since getting this phone it's the only way to get what I want out of the UI. Even their launcher is shockingly smooth with 5 screens and APW scrolling widgets on 4.
I've been dealing with the small fonts. it's irritating but what can you do. Every view even down to the Gmail app is more useful to me in tab mode.

Thats amazing, i'm going to have to check out that app for myseslf. Thanks for the heads up though on that! Small fonts are easy to evercome, but only if the
Rom you are running Tablet Mode on has the Font Size in the Display settings. What does your app Drawer look like with Go Launcher? Is it regular size or does it put like 30 apps on 1 screen?

you have to set the launcher to have larger icons. Not "large" mind you. A custom larger amount. depends on your preference.... then change the icon spacing to a larger amount. I think I did 7 columns and 8 rows. For the record I couldn't find go sms in the app store so I downloaded it online somewhere just google gosms.apk it's a free app so this is not stealing. honestly I can't wait for AOSP. I would probably take it in it's unfinished form even (just 1x and wifi.)

Jellybean-ify CM7

As much as I loved cm10, I was beginning to run into more and more app closes on a regular basis. Unfortunately it got to a point where I wasn't able to use many of the apps that I rely on daily. So back to stable cm7.
That being said, I miss alot of the jellybean love that cm10 brought to the x2. Was wondering if anyone had any input on apps or tweaks that could get more jellybean features into gb. So far I have found and use the following :
Holo launcher
Holo lock
GoSMS Pro with an ICS theme
I think I am missing the notification changes the most. I found jellybean notifications+ but that has been pulled from the app store.
Any input is appreciated, thanks!

I feel the same way. I mean I love what CM10 has to offer and I love the huge improvement in speed and functionality it gave to my phone and there are some things that are really making it difficult to want to stay on CM10. A really big one are the app crashes, and from what I gather, those apps may never really work since they use drivers at the kernel level that we won't have access to as long as the bootloader is locked. I can't use gmail at all except for reading the headlines of the emails. As soon as I enter the email, the app crashes. Obviously Chrome doesn't work, which is a browser I'd like to use. I've been using Dolphin Browser almost as long as I've had my phone and I can't use it at all on CM10. Another thing is wifi hotspots not working. I frequently tether my tablet to my phone's data connection and I can't do it while on CM10. The last thing is the horrible battery life. My phone seems to die around 5pm under the same conditions where my phone would last until 9pm or later on GB
unfortunately, the only thing to do is wait for CM10 to become more stable. I've tried CM7/9/10 and Eclipse and I keep going back to eclipse. 2.3 + supercharger + holo launcher is pretty much the best.
i loved CM10 while i used it but apps closing and such made it just unusable. hopefully dragonzkiller can get it working but at a certain point there's only so much he can do.

i loved CM10 while i used it but apps closing and such made it just unusable. hopefully dragonzkiller can get it working but at a certain point there's only so much he can do.

The problem though is that with the whole texture thing that ICS/JellyBean apps use that the GB kernel doesn't have, I don't think we'll ever get around those apps crashing short of using an old version of said apps without ICS/JellyBean elements...but then what's the point of running either one?
Guys question how do you claim to love cm10 when you can't use any major app like gmail or others.lol

I didnt have any issues with gapps, I even flashed a inverted Gmail and MMS with no problems. Some of my non-ICS optimized apps crashed out though.

Because aside from not being able to use some apps, JellyBean works amazingly. The operating system as a whole is wonderful and fluid and I'm gonna cry when I eventually downgrade because of the gmail issues and the horrible horrible battery life I am getting.
This isn't "Jelly Beanified" but will give you the ICS look if that is close enough for you. Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324924
Holo is great, but I don't care much for Holo Locker.
I use Widget Locker Pro instead.
It has some ICS and JB lock screen defaults and a metric poop ton of options for customizing the experience.
There is also an ICS Theme for the t-Mobile Theme Chooser app, between that theme, holo launcher and holo locker, it looks like pretty awesome. Other than applying these elements and maybe trying a theme patch using acPatch, I don't think you are going to get any closer to looking like JB. There is also a Jelly Bean status bar in the play store, but several users report that it's a ram hog. If I can get theses themes running on my MX2 with CM7, I'll post some screen shots.
Also, give this thread a look around, you might find some things you like:
CM7 Ice Cream Sandwich + Jelly Bean Look, All In One
I attached some screenshots. The ones with the Jelly Bean icon in the status bar were taken with the Jelly Bean Status Bar installed. I don't recommend it as it is constantly force closing. The rest were used with Holo Launcher, Holo Locker, and an ICS/JB theme for CM7
My sig shows Eclipse but I am currently running DZK's CM7

[Q] Galaxy SIII Sluggish

Hi,
I just switched from Apple and bought my first Android Phone. I am loving the overall experience of Andriod and the power of the SIII but sometimes, it gives me a headache.
Often times, the phone becomes quite sluggish and unresponsive for a short time and then gets back to normal. This usually happens at the home screen and the phone takes a while to redraw the screens. The phone becomes very sluggish when moving from one screen to the next.
Sometimes I notice sluggishness in the contacts and in the messages.
I have tried Apex and Nova launchers too and am currently using GO Launcher. It is great and I was loving it all the way but after about 10 days of use, even GO launcher has become sluggish and during this time, I did not make changes to the phone nor added any new apps. It seems like the RAM is full with apps and little resources available to the launcher itself. I feel Andriod can do better with RAM management.
How can I speed up my phone ? Optimize my RAM / CPU resources ? Is there a solution or do I have to live with it ? I can't imagine a phone so powerful behaving this way.
Please Help ! Thanks.
I am using the I9300 with 4.1.2
Hi
The reason for this is sometimes the ram becomes full and to free it up android starts killing up processes, including the Launchers too.
The best solution would be to jack up the RAM, but that's not possible.
One way you can avoid it for 90% (if not 100%) is by using Nova Launcher.
Go to Nova Settings -> Scroll to the bottom -> Advanced -> Check on Aggressive Desktop.
What it'll do is that it'll try to keep the launcher in memory as much as possible reducing the redraws and slugginess.
It doesn't work always, but for most of the part it does.
Root your phone and install a custom kernel such as siyah. Allows you to adjust certain gpu and cpu options as well as deliver far better sound.

Yes, rooting seems to be an option but that is the different route. I would like to try out the non rooting solutions first. I even installed Start Up Auditor and Watchdog, well theoratically it seems to be working but in the real sense, not most effective.
Q&A section awaits you
Make sure "Power saving" is off
Make sure you havent accidentally activated power saving mode, it makes the phone noticeably sluggish and scrolling skip frames.
Turn off animations in developers settings or set to .05

Ok let's get it started.
Install nova or apex and enable keep in memory from their settings.
Disable ripple effect in lock screen settings.
Go in application settings - all and disable following.
S voice
S suggest
Samsung applications
Video hub
Music hub
Everything Samsung which has a small blue cloud as an icon, there will be 7-8 apps.
If you only use Gmail. And don't use email app, you can disable it and also exchange services.
Disable flipboard
Disable everything Yahoo.
Disable live wallpaper and use a static one.
Have only one weather widget installed at one time. I would say default weather widget is good enough.
You will gain good amount of ram.

These are good for finding the problematic apps but I would not recommend these to be run in background permanently.

If I have to do ALL this .... then what's the point to buying the best in the market ? There is no better method than using all these small tweaks ?
I mean a top notch phone with great hardware and software should be able to do fine just on its own (without the tweaks) ...
Anyway ,,, my animations are already set to .05. I tried Nova, but GO launcher is just much better and faster. There is nothing in the settings or an app, that can reserve more RAM for the desktop and keep the million apps from running in the background ? Even when I kill apps from Watchdog, they pop right up after a few seconds.
I was showing off my phone to a friend who owns Apple, and right there in the middle of my Demo, The curse began and my desktop took 10 seconds to load ... it was pretty embarassing.

But this is Android my friend vastly different from the generic iPhone where everything works out of the box and everything looks the same but you are highly restricted in what you can do.
With Android you can modify and change to your hearts content, my Galaxy S3 has none of the problems you have, it whizzes along with superb battery life, people have already given good advice to you, usually noobs are told to use the search function
BTW not a chance is Go Launcher better than Nova, the best launcher in the business

I see from the above that you came from Apple... you know, you have the Android phone now, most of the stuff unfortunately have something to read or to set up. This is especially important for ANY apk which was not written specifically for I9300, as there are plenty of Android devices on the market.
and, typically for plenty: My IPhone was brilliant, and now I have to suffer, my, oh my!. Let's start from beginnig: you have changed the Launcher on I9300 for something what was not specifically designed for it (it is only COMPATIBLE, I mean: was not optimized). Try to replace it on iPhone, and then claim something, please.
OK, let's try to make your Go Launcher more playable now.
While on main screen, push menu button, then open preferences.
go to advanced, here you will find two important for you options:
1. System persistent and 2. Prevent force close.
Furthermore, unless you will root phone and uninstall/disable TW, it will be always somewhere in running processes.
Finally, please tell how many widgets do you have, Live wallpaper? etc.
Last but not least: you should look on the processes running in background rather than on apps. And feel free to use Go task switcher for that, it is add-on to Go Launcher, and free as well.
just don't use any task killers to clean your RAM, Android handles it pretty well and you're only messing up the system
Usually rooting is the best option as Samsung updates might be pushed before its stable.
If not turn off power saving option. And other small tweaks

Can I ask how you managed to do this (specifically Flipboard). I am running a typical stock International firmware that is rooted and have managed to safely remove a good deal of the junk/bloatware but Flipboard persists in returning upon reboot. Is there something I am missing? Any advise appreciated.
