Does anyone know of an app what can help me automatically switch Wi-Fi based in hirsignal strengths, I have 3 connections in the house all of them have the same SSID but they're all in different places around the house basically I am looking for an app to reconnect Wi-Fi if there is an available connectable SSID 20% stronger signal.
All of the apps I've found only support different SSID's which is rather annoying.
You can give tasker a try, im not sure if it will allow you to do exactly what you ask. Surely it will be much easier if all the name of the 3 wifi were different, at that point I think android should automatically switch to the most powerful one.

Hey,
I realised tht if they had different names android would automatically switch but there are like 15 wireless devices in the house and setting then all up to 3 wireless connections is a hassle especially with setting up static IP's and proxy settings for adblock plus.
Also when we have friends and family over they're more than welcome to use the Wi-Fi so it makes more hassle.
I'll have a look into tasker, thanks for your reply.

I'm so not understanding this Tasker, I can't work out how to do this... I've done a few other things but seriously can't get my head around this exact need.

What's the best WiFi interenet sharing solution? WalkingHotSpot, WiFiRouter,

WifiRouter seemed to keep my WiFi on all the time and allowed unlimited people to connect with no security, and WalkingHotSpot I couldn't get working for some reason, but it didn't look like you could set up any security with that either. WMWifirouter does have WEP security that you can configure, and you can kick unknown IPs if you wish. There is a known bug regarding the WiFi always being on, but if you want to kill it you just go to your comm manager and click on the WiFi button. I know that's a bit of a hassle but it is a workaround. I havent used the WalkingHotSpot program but I can't imagine it's much better than WMWifirouter, which has many config settings to customize.
How do you configure the WEP Security? Is it a setting in the software itself? I don't remember any settings in it that allowed you to configure for WEP or to kick off IPs. What's the latest free version? Maybe I have an older version. I uninstalled it because it seemed to be turned on all the time and I couldn't prevent anyone from using it and I tested to see how long it went and it went about 6 houses down the street from my house. I thought it would only go like 10 feet or so, but it must be at least 300-400 feet. That's pretty crazy. Thanks!

Well I take it back. WMWifirouter just crapped out on me, so I can't even test it. I am trying walkinghotspot right now. It does support very basic WEP as well, but the interface isn't as smooth as WMWifirouter. It does appear to work, however it crashed on me about about 2 minutes. It did continue to work through the crash, however I was not able to get back into the app until I did the soft reset.
Anyone know of an app that will boost my wifi speed at work over others?
Server speed is good just so many other devices and pcs it makes mine very slow. Its very frustrating

you can configure this on your wifi router. if your wifi ap is basic one it might not have this settings. but most routers come with option to set high priority, qos etc.

The whole point of Traffic shaping would be lost if any device can set itself to a higher priority.
Some packets can set an URG-flag which stands for least-latency routing instead of least-cost routing however it's still the router's call if he respects this and if yes how he treats them.
Something else is probably incorrectly configured. It's been reported several times that the S3 is very picky when several Wifi AP's with the same name (SSID) and in reach of each other are configured on the same channel (frequency). However most hobby-admins even know not to do that, so if your company is doing it you might suggest basic network training for your IT guys. (The basics of the Wifi protocol are in roughly the 3. semester at university)
You might want to try whether forcing the device to 5Ghz band will make it better since that band is far less crowded.
Also you could check WHAT causes the issues. Often it's not the bandwith by itself but either the router's connection table (a VPN to an external server is a very good but cumbersome solution) or the DHCP (use OpenDNS or Google DNS)

Im using omega.. is this only possible on samsung based roms? Would it make much difference in me doing it? Id be happy to flash a sammy rom if it can get me a better connection at work. It takes around 10 mins just to post on here when im at work. And thats only after turning wifi off and on. I get good signal at work, and the speed tests are good. Hmmm

Im a proudly owner of a S3 and a GNexus and I have some problems regarding Wi-Fi, I know that this is not an S3 problem but its and android problem but perhaps someone can help me in here..
the thing is, I have two routers in my house, one is the master one for cable/internet company and the other is and range extender to expand the signal of the wireless lan....
every morning, when I wake up, if I go to the floor where is the first router both my S3 and Gnexus connect successfully to the wireless network and evevyrthing works fine....however if I go to the floor where the bridge/extender is located, both phones detects the wireless network, however can't connect to it, on wireless settings says...Obtaining ip address...and stays there for ages...and nothing...cant connect...for me to connect to the bridge, I have to restart the bridge and both phones connect immediately...
please any ideas??

Is it password protected? If so try making it 'open' or change the encryption type.

yes the network is password protected...I changed the encryption type for the WPA not the WPA2 and the problem still persists...
the thing that kills my brains is that, to connect to the bridge I must restart the the access point every morning,....

Are you sure the second device extends the main access point and not just create a new WLAN?
Have you updated the firmware of both devices?
What devices do you have?
Am I understanding correctly that your laptop does work even though both Android devices don't (before you reboot the extender)?
Nope...its not creating another wireless lan... it extends the main plan correctly cause my laptop connects perfectly to the Wi-Fi from the extender even prior to the restart of the extender....
The devices are...main router from the ISP- Thomson
Range extender- tp link 701nd

Both have latest firmware? Might be a bug in the WiFi driver of the AP/ROUTER... or it's in Android.... you will need to test by trial and error I guess...

Dynamic would be the friendliest to work with... you could try if it's a DHCP issue by setting a fixed IP when the problem occurs, but I don't think it is.
This is not a problem with the phone(s)....is with the router config. Contact the manufacturer for further assistance...

If you got a router and a range extender, there's nothing you need to fiddle with because the range extender will just Relay DHCP requests between client and master router.
Two routers* pushing out IP addresses is a no go, there will be a conflict in your scenario, and all range extenders will of course take this into account.
If you had two "real" routers*, it would still be possible to set everything up, although then there's a lot to take into account.
* Router is a inaccurate term used for the consumer grade combination devices. They're in fact a router, a switch, and a wireless access point bundled in a neat package. Sometimes with a xDSL modem or something on the external interface of the router.
Try setting the IP to static and more important, try giving it a default gateway to the routers IP. That should make it easy for your phone to directly look for the gateway it is looking for.

I have three routers, one main, one extender, one repeater (creating a whole new network for other building). Both main and repeater are the same network. All is config as per DD-WRT documentation. All three have latest DD-WRT.
After trying many things, all I can say is the (or mine at least) S3 always has trouble when many APs are nearby. I don't use VOIP because of that (it could disconnect at any time).
Next step on my list is to have 3 different SSIDs (only two now) and try using tasker to debounce the wifi switching (if that is even possible).
I have a technical question ... you can use the 3G network for surfing the Internet and at the same time the wifi network to move files only?
Simply put no. Phones are not made to use 2 different wireless signals at once.

The only way to use both is setting a Wi-FI access point on your phone. Still, you can't do things you want to: PC connects to smartphone just to get internet data.

Do you even understand what your asking? Voice and data are 2 very different things. Data and call signals are handled by different process. The antenna are set to do one voice and one data. Think about it. Even dual sim card devices can only use one at a time.

When you use the wifi 3g module is put into the off state to save battery, works only the incall module. When you disable the wifi 3g module change the status to up. About your question no, it's impossible to use wifi and 3g at the same time to make 2 different operation

thanks for the reply. just in my office I have a wifi router with no internet connection, are connected with the phone to surf the intranet. so I would keep the connection 3g to receive notifications from whattsup or other ... every time without having to turn off and on the wifi. It does not seem like a stupid question.

That's incorrect. Android phones can use multiple wireless signals at once (wifi, cell, mobile data, bluetooth, nfc). And they can have multiple network interfaces up at the same time just like any linux box can. It just happens that the network manager turns of mobile data when you turn on wifi, but that's on purpose (to save you battery/cost), and not because the phone isn't capable of it.
Not sure why you say with such authority there's no way around it. If you don't know the answer to something for sure, better don't give a wrong answer.
There's even an app on the play store that can loadbalance a download over wifi and mobile data at the same time:

I say this from past experience that the WiFi antenna could not get a signal at the same time as the data antenna.
Now while this may have changed. I will look into it myself before I pay much heed to it as anything more then smoke and mirrors.

My Internet speed is roughly 50 down and 5 up. I use a Netgear modem/router (this was the router that worked correctly with all of my demands). I have an iMac that will get the full 50 download speed via wifi. My iPad gets around 30 (not the full 50 but satisfactory)... but my Note 3 is around 1Mbps. Maybe sometimes it'll spike up in speed for a few moments... But it's so inconsistent. I tried using different channels on the router.... No improvement. (the upload speed is fine though. It'll usually be the full 5mbps)
Any ideas on what's going on? Any settings on the router I can try to help improve this? (stock note 3).

Glitch: Wi-Fi issues
Some Note 3 owners are having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi networks, finding that the Wi-Fi is very slow, or that the device keeps dropping the connection. There are a ton of potential reasons for this and consequently there are a ton of potential fixes. Here’s what you can try:
Workaround:
Some people with stability issues have been able to get solid Wi-Fi connections simply by making sure that mobile data is switched off. Just drag down the notification shade and toggle Mobile data off.
Potential solutions:
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap Menu > Advanced and then uncheck Auto network switch. That seems to have helped some people.
Try turning off the Note 3 and your router for a few minutes and then turn them both back on again.
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and long press on the problem connection, then tell the device to forget it and set the connection up again from scratch.
Try out the free Wi-fi Analyzer app and see if crowded channels could be the issue. If so then change the channel on your router.
Make sure that your router firmware is up to date and check settings like MAC filtering.
If you’re having stability issues then you might try disabling the apps Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Direct Share via Settings > Applications manager on the All tab.

I do not know how to tell which type of router I have. I can tell you it took many routers to find the right one (NetGear C3700). I went through a bunch of Time Warner crap and several from Best Buy......even Motorola's flagship modem/router. It needed to do the following:
Provide open NAT type for Xbox live
Allow my Android device to recognize the Xbox One as a device on my network (pics, vids & music through the console)
Allow Android Youtube app to communicate with the Xbox One Youtube app.
Allow proper connection to my iMac via Wifi (One of Time Warner routers would not work with my iMac)
My BT and Wifi havent worked the same since the KitKat update - Thanks again

Man that sucks, I had serious issues with 4.3. since KK I've been rocks solid with WiFi,
You might try to old factory reset (which sucks I know) just backup first so if there is no change you can restore easy enough.
What ROM are you running? Stock?
Set your wireless channel away from everyone elses. There is a setting where you can just set it to just 802.11N save it. Try setting your wifi port to static for your device. Check your wifi settings on your device. Make sure your using the same channel on your device as for the router.

I've already tried a factory reset since the KK update (for Bluetooth issues). No help.
The phone is stock.
I've tried changing around the channels a little bit with no success so far. How can I change the channel on the device? How do I set the port to static for my device?
