(Working again)Howto: P769* ICS/JB T-Mobile Wifi tether upsell bypass *Root Required* - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

Note: This is for ICS/JB. For CM 10.1 users try my other tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232099
I figured out how to get tethering working without any special Proxies or VPNs.
This does work for other operating systems/protocols/ports/ and all browsers that support user agent switching :
*** Root is required ***
*** ICS is required ***
1.) Backup Rom via CWM recovery.
2.) Backup /etc/apn-conf.xml
3.) Edit /etc/apn-conf.xml
Replace all instances of:
pcweb.tmobile.com
with
epc.tmobile.com
orfast.tmobile.com
4.) You may need to prevent T-Mobile from overwriting the file:
a.) Change permissions(chmod) on the file using the terminal to prevent T-Mobile from pushing a new one:
To change permissions `chmod 444 /etc/apns-conf.xml`
To check permissions `ls -la /etc/apns-conf.xml`
b.) Make the file immutable using the terminal so that not even root can edit/overwrite/remove it:
To add the immutable bit `chattr +i /etc/apns-conf.xml`
To check the immutable bit `lsattr /etc/apns-conf.xml`
To remove the immutable bit `chattr -i /etc/apns-conf.xml`
***You will need to remove the immutable bit if you want to edit/overwrite/remove the file again***
5.) Disable/Freeze/Remove "com.lge.upsell" app/apk .
6.) Force stop, Clear data, and Clear cache "com.lge.upsell" in App Manager in Android settings.
(You may need to Force stop again after clearing data & cache)
7.) Reboot device.
8.) Verify that com.lge.upsell is not running in App Manager after reboot.
(If it does start you may need to remove the app/apk and reboot.)
9.) Install "Android Tether for Root Users"
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ Grab the latest version. If you have trouble use this version: 3.2-beta2
10.) Known working settings for "Android Tether for Root Users"
a.) Change Device Profile :
"Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)"
(ICS Only!)
b1.) Change Setup-Method :
Netd (master)
(JB Only!)
b2.) Change Setup-Method:
Netd-Ndc (master)
c.) Enable WiFi-Encryption :
"Checked"
or (Whichever you prefer)
"Not Checked"
d.) Don't disable Bluetooth :
"Checked"
e.) WiFi-driver reload :
"Checked"
f.) Enable Access-Control :
"Checked"
or (Whichever you prefer) "Not Checked"
g.) Keep-Alive check interval :
"Not Checked"
h.) Routing fix :
"Checked" (This should fix issues with T-Mobiles crapy network)
i.) Disable Update-Check :
"Checked" (This way we don't accidentally update to a version that does not work.)
j.) Disable Wake-Lock :
"Not Checked"
Update: 2/15/2014
11.) Change the user agent on your browser:
User agent strings:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/534.24 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/11.0.696.34 Safari/534.24
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9_1) AppleWebKit/537.73.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0.1 Safari/537.73.11
a.) Chrome:
Select menu
Select tools
Select extensions
Select "Get more extensions"
Search for "user agent switcher"
Pick the one you want and set the user agent.
b.) Firefox:
Select "Tools"
Select "Add-ons"
Select "Get Add-ons"
Search for "user agent switcher"
Pick the one you want and set the user agent.
c.) IE:
http://www.iegallery.com/
Search for "user agent switcher"
Pick the one you want and set the user agent.
Click to collapse
Notes:
1.) The ssid is usually not broadcasted so the wifi network is hidden(This is actually a good thing for security). You can add the hidden network manually.
Good Luck!

Re: Howto: P769* ICS T-Mobile Wifi tether upsell bypass *Root Required*
Do you notice any difference in network quality or is it too early to tell? Plus do you know if it will operate on a windows laptop? I've read somewhere you have to tweak the register (windows) or use a android user agent for browsing.

Sorry in advance for being a noob, however, inside the apn_conf.xml
I did not find any pcweb.T-Mobile.com lines. All i found was this

I'm pretty sure you do not have to go through steps 1-7 to get wifi tether for root working. I had installed the app a week back and got everything working by just playing around with the settings in the app

Kuma82:
If you are running stock 10g for for p769 the pcweb.tmobile.com should be there. If not, I can past my xml.
Nmosfet:
This hack is for users who are seeing the T-Mobile upsell page when browsing the net via tether. Not all users will have this issue. I am on the unlimited data plan and T-Mobile is being persistent in trying to charge me $ for how I use my unlimited internet. By using my hack even users who are not being redirected will have full internet access as apposed to proxy/user agent faking which causes issues with some web pages.
T-Mobile seems to have disabled user agent detection on traffic going through the epc.tmobile.com apn. If they re-enable detection we will begin to see the upsell. If that happens use FoxFi/PDAnet+ with the proxy add on to mask your browser user agent.

ic thanks for the heads up. I guess I was already on epc.tmobile.com (according to settings/mobile network) hence no issues, although i think that was the default APN for me. Maybe I'm dense or something, but if you just want to switch APNs, why not just change it in settings rather than going through a system file? Also, that com.lg.upsell doesn't seem to play a role, does it? It's still enabled on my phone as i have no idea what it does.

Lucky you. I am wondering, do you have the prepaid version? That could be the difference since I purchased mine @ a T-Mobile store.
Don't worry, you are not dense. The reason why editting the APN settings will not work on all devices is because the entry for tethering is hidden.
The com.lg.upsell app is what kept blocking my tether traffic after a few seconds. I believe it is detecting data flowing between wifi & cellular. But if you have a diffent plan or the pre-paid model it may not matter. Are you on an umlimited plan?

thanks Kevev for explaning everything. I'm on the $30 (walmart) prepaid plan. I guess it's possible that explains some of the configuration differences.

Yup that is probably why. That plan is a great value.

follow up
Well I don't have the unlimited plan and I'm not on the prepaid plan either, I'm currently on the 2gb plan. That's probably why my xml is different. However, I'm planning on changing to the unlimited. Thanks for the advice and if it's not a problem, can you upload your xml (Kevev).

I update the original post by adding the new LTE apn(fast.tmobile.com) as an option in case T-Mobile starts blocking on epc.tmobile.com apn.
The new apn seems faster as there are less LTE users at this time.

Kevev, Thank you for your amazing finding. I now dont have to use the EasyTether app which forced me connect via a usb cable and messing around with the browsers UA String. I now have the freedom of wireless Tethering as I did on my Sprint Galaxy S3.
Thank You, It worked like a charm.

[Q] Barnacle Wifi Tether

Should Barnacle Wifi Tether work fine on the Atrix now that we have root?
It wont matter that att wants you to get there tethering plan?
Shouldn't be a problem.

This isn't exactly an answer to your question but they found a way to activate the native hotspot feature without rooting or adding a tethering plan. I included the link to the thread and the instructions found within it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961217
Menu - Settings - Wireless & NetworksMobile Networks - Access Point Names - Menu - New APN, Enter these settings:
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC:310
MNC:410
Authentication Type: leave blank
APN Type: leave blank
Menu - Save, then select New APN (AT&T) You should see a green dot next to it, and it should be labeled under AT&T as wap.cingular. Go back to home screen and check internet connection is active. Once you verified internet is working, power off phone, then power on. Phone should still have active internet connection, if it does, you are done!
I prefer to use barnacle, because you can do MAC based filtering (default deny, with questions for allow every time). Has anybody tried Barnacle on the Atrix with root?

What is the benefit of using the native ATT tether feature over barnacle? It seems to me that ATT would be more likely to discover your use of tethering if you use their native client and access points.

Not to mention that I got faster speeds when using Barnacle than I did the blank AT&T APN - 4.26 Down / 0.33 Up using Barnacle - 2.70 Down / 0.29 Up on the APN tethering....
For those wondering how to get Barnacle since the stupid Android Market says "this item is not available for your carrier," a big F-U to AT&T on that one, just root your device and allow side loaded apps, then from your computer, go to:
http://szym.net/barnacle/
and download the direct link.... You'll have to manually update it though (if necessary, works great as is on the current 0.6.7 version), because even with using Appbrain, it shows up in the apps sync'd, but will not open the market app to update, when necessary.
Other ways to get Barnacle

I don't have my Atrix yet (get paid on Monday), but on my current Streak, there are 2 ways to get Barnacle: Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Network Settings -- Uncheck "Data enabled", then turn on wifi and download from the market.
The other (unconfirmed) option is to just use the Android web market: market.android.com . Search for Barnacle, install it there. It worked on my phone, but I had it installed previously. I don't think AT&T can block those installations, but I am sure they would if they could, so YMMV.
Barnacle not working for me.
For some reason, Barnacle Wifi won't even let my computer connect to it. It says it's sending out the signal, and my laptop is trying to connect but it just won't. My other smart phone won't even find the signal B.Wifi is sending out. The only thing that seems to work is using the native hotspot after following the instructions listed above. Just curious if anyone else is having an issue?

Since the app doesn't need an update just yet, I can't confirm the first way you suggested. But I can definitely UNconfirm the second - that's where I got the text from that says it cannot be installed on our carrier. I almost always use the computer to search for apps as opposed to the actual Market app on the phone.
Was sitting in the passenger seat of a car going 80mph down the highway earlier and was getting a great connection with Barnacle the whole 3 hour trip. Love it, didn't even bother with the APN tether!
what kind of computer are you using. i have the Chrome CR-48 and it doesn't work because they can't connect to ADHOC networks. Tethering sets up an ADHOC network, not infrastructural like your Home Wireless Routers

An easy way to bypass the Market check is to download MarketEnabler from the market and temporarily change the settings to another carrier (e.g. I tried Telstra). This will allow you install Barnacle directly from the Market.
I also find that Barnacle works flawlessly. The Native Hotspot feature also works with no problem. I have found however that the native hotspot requires high speed or it will not even start. Barnacle on the other hand will work when still within the Edge network if need be.

Another satisfied Barnacle user here.
I am new to Android and when I got my Atrix the first thing I did was root it with SuperOneClick. I tried tethering it using the XDA's forum instructions for APN but couldn't get it to work. A friend of mine suggested Barnacle and I've been rolling ever since.
I was a little confused when my laptop showed the ad-hoc connection and symbol rather than a 'traditional' wifi network, but my connection is solid.
Now to wait on AT&T to do their thing and turn the psudo-4G switch on.

This works PERFECTLY.... Just used T-Mobile (a little closer to home than Telstra is in Australia ) and updated Barnacle - will be doing this for any other "issues" AT&T throws our way......
I was able to install Barnacle as well as PDANET by
***WARNING*** Make sure you know your Moblur login information before proceeding. It was the account you created when you first got your phone.
1) Turn off the phone.
2) Remove the AT&T SIM card
3) Turn the phone back on(It will make you login to your Moblur account again)
4) Connect to your WIFI
5) Install Barnacle and PDANET from the Android store.
6) Turn off the Atrix
7) Re-install your SIM chip
8) Enjoy the applications
I have found that this will work with alot of apps that you cant DL from the store because of AT&T's policy's.
I was unable to manually update Barnacle after side-loaded, could you include the steps you used to manually update?
Thanks!

[Q] Help! Tethering Droid Incredible 4g w/Unlimited Data

Is it possible to tether a rooted droid incredible 4g running the stock HTC Sense image that STILL has the unlimited data plan (I got the phone just before they killed it last summer)? I have a stock droid incredible 4g (Android 4.0.4) that I simply unlocked the bootloader on and installed/flashed SuperSU from TWRP. I apologize if my terminology is off as I am new to this. I have installed both WiFi Tether and FoxFi and have had no success with either program. I may be configuring something incorrectly or it may not be possible given I'm still on the unlimited data plan. I assumed that rooting my device would somehow allow Wifi Tether to bypass whatever verizon blocks on the unlimited data plans to prevent tethering. I have googled everything I can with regard to this issue and have attempted all the recommended fixes with FoxFi (rename the SSID, reboot the phone, disabled WiFi, etc...). I do not know how to configure Wifi Tether (tried the defaults and a few combinations I found on google) and have found very little to assist further with it. There are multiple device-profiles and setup-methods to choose from in addition to a bunch of other options, and am hoping someone know specifically what I can do or have a combination that works. Any help would be greatly appreciated .
Simplified Questions:
(1) Is it possible to teather on a droid inc 4g with unlimited data?
***These Questions assume '1' above is true***
(2) Can this work in FoxFi, if so, how do I configure it?
(3) Can this work in Wifi Tether, if so, how do I configure it?
(3a) In Wifi Tether, I would need it set up to do a 'hotspot' not an ad-hoc network connection, no clue how to do this...
(3b) In Wifi Tether, which device-profile and setup-method should be used?
(3c) There are a number of options in WiFi Teather, which ones should be selected?
Solved
I continued to search and try settings and figured out what worked:
(1) Phone must be rooted
(2) Download WiFi Teather
(3) In Settings -> Choose HTC Rezound (LTE/CDMA/GSM) as the 'Device-Profile'
(4) Leave the 'Setup-Method' as 'Auto', which is the default
(5) Optional: Use 'WiFi-Encryption' if you'd like
(6) Set the SSID
(7) Check the box for 'Wifi-driver reload'
(8) Ensure 'MSS clamping' is checked (was by default for me)
(9) Ensure 'Routing fix' is checked (was by default for me)
(10) Start Tethering
The above should work...
Simple, if your on a sense based ROM just use open garden https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=og.android.tether
And in settings select either generic ICS or rezound I forget its been a while but I know it works flawlessly
On cm which I am just use the built in tethering very simple
I use WiFi Tether (currently using 3.2-beta2). Works great. Fast, no drops, etc.
While I am running ViperLTE, I see no reason why it won't work with rooted stock.
In fact... I'm using it right now

I have found that signal strength/area is everything when it comes to speeds - tethering or otherwise. At work, I have intermittent 4G and my tethering speeds are so-so. I have to carefully put my phone in the right spot to get 4G, and that spot varies depending on the weather...
However, at home my signal and 4G are rock solid. 4G speeds, including tethering, are faster than my WiFi connection.

I use WiFi Tether Router from the play store. Your phone does need to be rooted to use it. This will also bypass the tethering limit on the account.
First your phone needs to be rooted, and then you need to have ES File Explorer installed on your phone. You can use ES File Explorer to edit the file in the system folder.
1. Open ES File Explorer
2. Pull up the Menu for it (hold down the multitask button for that)
3. Tap on Tools
4. Turn on Root Explorer
5. Tap on Root Explorer on the left side and go to Mount R/W
6. Make sure all of the settings are set to RW, tap OK
7. At the top of ES File Explorer tap / that should take you to the root of the phone,
Now go to System, CSC, and open customer.xml
When you click on the file it opens it up in read only, you have to hit the menu in the top right corner to edit the file.
Be very careful and only change the things below. I would make a back up of the file and place it somewhere you know you can find it. What you are going to change is in bold.

Save the changes and reboot
Once you are restarted navigate to where the APN's are. System Settings, More Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names. Once you are there click on the top right corner and tap Reset to Default. That should update the APN, you can now go in and verify that under T-Mobile US LTE the APN protocol is now set to ipv4. If the change didn’t pull over you should be able to edit it and change it to ipv4;
These are the Wifi Tether Router Settings from the developer below. Make sure that your WiFi is turned on before you start the app.
For Samsung Galaxy S5 using this config
Interface wlan0
Method 3 - HostApd
Encryption wpa2-psk
Channel 1
Drivers nl80211
"HostApd Patch" <- UNCHECKED
"No Firmware Reload" <- UNCHECKE

Okay after rebooting I get 2 APNs that shown up from resetting to default APN. One is T-mobile US LTE fast.t-mobile.com The other one is T-mobile MMS LTE fast.t-mobile.com. The first one is selected. Does this mean I cannot send MMS without selecting that APN? Is this because I changed the IPV6 to IPV4? Sorry I'm not very good at root stuff. I had tether for my note 2 and was wondering if it was possible for the s5. Not a necessity for me just useful. Anyways just curious if I screwed something up or not.
Edit
So I tried the app Wifi tether router, using those settings and my pc only stays on a limited connection with no IPv4 connectivity. Anyone have an idea of what I did wrong?

The wifi tether router app was working for me..
or you can try flashing this rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2720382
i did and it works perfectly.
The stock "Mobile HotSpot" app works just fine.
SO ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I followed the directions to the T!
And guess what, I don' see crap! my SSID is not being broadcasted. WHY?
I followed EXACTLY to the letter of the instructions.
---------- Post added at 09:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 PM ----------
ok.. So now I DON'T follow the instructions, I set auto for both
Interface and Method and guess what.. I now see the SSID.. Think it works? think again! "The connection is limited" on my tablet.
on my PC, not connected.
Same old crap a different "Trick and tip"
nothing against anyone personally. If I had a dollar for every guide I've followed and it failed, I'd make a ton of money. I should start a site on youtube for people to see me follow people guides, and I don't mess up. I'm VERY good at following directions, but there is ALWAYS something missing.
forexample.. Dude says "only change whats in bold"
WHAT!! nothing is in bold chief !!
thank you!
I followed your notes to the T & yes.......it works!
I just thought the Wifi tether router app was free; but, its so cheap....
then once I close the app my normal wifi connection is disabled. Entering the PW again doesn't matter. I literally must reboot the phone to get things back to normal.
Anything you know about fixing that tiny issue? Otherwise, I'm so thrilled because NOTHING else worked.
thank you!!!
:good:
---------- Post added at 06:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:38 PM ----------
to add..
I think that happens because T-mobile network is holding it up.........preventing the normal wifi connection to not take place unless I reboot. my thoughts.

Works.. but not like this
When I first got my S5 from T Mobile I rooted and installed Alliance ROM. Wifi Thether Router worked out of the box.
I F'd up my phone somehow and had to have it replaced under warranty. This time I decided to stick with the stock ROM, but I couldn't get WIFI Thethering to work. It would connect, and pretend like it was working but always timeout. I had this problem on my S3 and had to change the useragent to get anywhere, which sucked always being served mobile pages.
I decided to try this before changing my useragent again. It did not work. It connected to the network but it didn't even pretend to load any pages. I tried different browsers. Tried different OSes. Then I restored the customer.xml file to the original and somehow everything works again. On Ubuntu 14 anyway. No such luck on Win 8.1. But that's ok, FoxFi's USB Tether works awesome out of the box, with or without root.
Got my free internet back. $150/mo phone bill for unlimited data, at least I'm not paying for internet too.

[Q] Anyone getting free tethering on T-Mobile?

Hey all,
About to finalize my purchase of a Z2 but want to double check that I can tether easily on T-Mobile without paying extra.
I travel a lot for work and need the constant internet connection that follows me everywhere. Relying on wifi hotspots is too much of a pain.
Thanks!
I'm on T-Mobile! I have unlimited 4g LTE but no tethering plan at all. Since the last time I paid for my bill (which was 2 weeks ago), I have tethered 60gb of data. Just remember to change your browser's user agent with a user agent switcher extension and you should be good. I suggest you change to a Safari for Mac user agent as it seems like t-mobile can't detect those.

Thank you! Really excited! So does this mean that the phone supports tethering by default from the box? It just checks for non mobile browser user agent string when traffic is passing through the device to tmobile?

I am using pdanet+ along with FoxFi for infrastructure mode, while you do not need to change your user agent string when through USB tethering, you need to change it if you're tethering through wifi (infrastructure mode). I don't know about other areas of the US but at least for Southern California and Northern California, I have to change my user agent strings in order for them to not redirect me to their hotspot page.
@advocat3 : Just experiment and see what works for you. The worst that will happen is the t-mobile hotspot page you get when they redirect you. If that's the case then just start over. Nothing serious will happen. While some users report that you do not need to change your user agent, I found that without changing my user agent, they redirect me after a few seconds of use.

Sounds familiar. T-Mobile screws me over in california too without APN settings change and a root settings change.
But the phone supports USB tethering? That's good to know because I personally prefer it.

Yup, there are options for usb tethering. I've never used the stock settings myself however. I've only used FoxFi and everything seems fine so far. Been tethering for 3 months now.

I may not say it clear when I said even don't need to change user agent for brower
That only work at pdanet usb tethering model not wifi tethering
First you download two files of pdanet one for you phone another one for your computer
Then you need to change a pdanet setting from your computer
Go to setting-hide tether usage-chose level 1.
I use it for a year without any problem.

oh no, I wasn't disagreeing with you. I was just saying that I had to change user agent strings because I tether through wifi haha. Sorry if it seemed like I was disagreeing.

Enable Wireless Tethering Moto X Pure

Enable Wireless Tethering Rooted Moto X Pure
1. Modifying system files could render your device useless, so by continuing you’re assuming that risk
2. Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/
3. (Optional) Make a copy of the build.prop
4. Open the build.prop file with a text editor
5. Add the following line to the bottom of build.prop file: net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
6. Save the file and reboot your device
This has been confirmed to work with a Sprint Sim.

It should be noted that some carriers (such as T-Mobile) use the number of hops left on packets that hit their servers to indicate that you're using tethering rather than cellphone data.
The xt_HL.ko netfilter driver included with a customer kernel should allow a user to use the IP Tables rule to change tethered traffic TTL with the default TTL of the device. This would make tethered data appear as if it's actually cellphone data.
I think this is currently contained in CM (at least it is on my OPO), but doesn't seem to be contained in the default kernel for moto phones (though I've only tested the 2013 X).
A guide about including this in a kernel can be found here, and I encourage anyone kernel devs out there to at least give this a look.
Thanks!
I have Verizon unlimited and the tethering worked for me without any type of verification or mod to the system provisions.
Usually because of unlimited this is deactivated to force the subscriber into paying the additional $30 monthly charge.
Are other carriers not allowing you guys to tether or something?

That's really strange. I can confirm it worked with my Cricket sim in a 1575 (Pure). I haven't done anything to it but rooted it so I could put Viper4Android (audio) on it.
Not working on Three UK.
This is what worked on MetroPCS(Tmob)
From http://pocketnow.com/2015/01/01/nexus-6-tethering:
(Optional) Using a root file explorer, navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/ and make a copy of settings.db
Install and open a SQL editor and grant it root access when prompted (such as SQLite Editor)
Tap the APPS tab and then “Settings Storage”
Tap on settings.db then global
Tap on the + symbol to add a new key/value pair
In the name field type in tether_dun_required
In the value field type in 0 (zero)
Tap Save
Open the Android system Settings
Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS tap More…
Tap Mobile networks then APNs
(If you’re using T-Mobile) Make sure your T-Mobile configuration is selected (mine is T-Mobile GPRS), then tap on it
(If you’re using T-Mobile) Make sure your APN protocol and APN roaming protocol are both set to IPv4 (it doesn’t look like tethering works with IPv6 yet)
(If you’re using T-Mobile) Make sure your APN is set to fast.t-mobile.com
Reboot

Worked like a champ on my Pure on Sprint...
Thanks sooooo.much

Works! Yay I have tethering again
OP, thanks for the share.
I have also found an alternate method that requires no editing of prop files.
I tried several of the apps on the store and discovered that the free app mify works on Sprint with no system edits except having a rooted phone.
