Do I need to unroot S2 after or before restoring backup of Stock Rom? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I rooted my S2 and got a backup of my Stock Rom. Then I installed Omega Rom. Now I want to go back to my stock Rom. Can I just go in CWM and restore back to my stock rom? Or do I need to unroot the phone and then restore? Or do I need to unroot after restore? Or is the phone automatically unrooted after restoring backup?

Of course you can restore it from CWM, that's what the backup is for.
You've made the backup with a rooted kernel, so it's obvious your phone will still be rooted after the restoring, with the kernel you had on that moment.

Yes, if you want to. There are enough guides here, just search on xda for them. They're not hard to find.

We can't yet, I've read that clock works is working on a recovery.

Its available around here somewhere so there's no need to be worried about backing up the stock 2.2. You just need to make sure you can use Odin if you want to go back to stock.

can't do nandroid restore

I am trying to restore to one of the nandroid back ups that I did before. I face with the following messages on recovery:
Checking md5 sums...
Erasing boot before restore...
Restoring boot image...
Error while flashing boot image!
What is my problem?
Thanks in advance

Bingo. You can't restore a 2.2.1 backup while on 2.3. You're gonna have to Odin then flash that rom as per first time Im afraid.

Good catch! I didn't know that. I just Odin'ed, can I restore after Odin?
Whenever you leave cm7, you need to odin to jfd.
I have a guide, if needed.

Not sure, But I guess not since you either odined to 2.2 or 2.1 while Heathen's rom is 2.2.1 so try flashing it again then restore if you've THAT much data you don't want to lose and haven't backed up in any other way.

Am trying to restore now. The reason I went back is because I noticed Ti backup this time didn't bring my SMS stuff to CM7. So now I want to install SMS back up and then back them up then go back to CM7... oh boy long way...frustrating

Question about rooting.

If I root my GS2 and leave the stock rom, can I still update the phone thru kies? I want to use titanium backup and other apps..

If you flash CF root, then flash back your stock kernel you will keep root but lose nandroid backups and anything else from the CWM app
Kies should be able to update your phone still, just make sure you flash the correct stock kernel back.
