[Q] Storage questions about DNA - HTC Droid DNA

Well I love my DNA, love everything except the shortage of storage. I though heck, thats enough storage for me, boy was I wrong...lol
So my question for you guys, do you use the cloud to save excess data and/or can we use usb sticks/thumbdrives to hook up to our phones to gain extra access to data, like music and video data that takes so much room on the internal sdcards.

You can use an OTG (on the go) cable to connect a USB memory or even connect an SD card. Don't know if it works right out the box or if you need to be rooted, but it's possible.

Thanks man, that actually solves all my storage issues, thanks for taking the time to enlighten me.

I use usb otg helper to mount my micro sd card for additional storage. It also makes it easy to transfer files between phones/pcs. I can even back up directly to external sd via clockwork mod. Just mount it in recovery and then you can flash/restore/backup without having the files on your phone.

I use spotify for music, I purge my download folder every once in a while, and I only keep one nandroid backup at at time. I have no issues with storage.

For music you could use Google music, and use drive for your other stuff, such as files. Saves a lot of storage for me when you have over 1500 songs.

Internal and Externel Storage is confusing the hell outta me.

So I wish to keep all my media, ie photos and music on my EXTERNAL SD Card only, and all my apps etc on the phone itself, how do I set it up, so that when I connect to the computer it only mounts the external storage, ie the sd card, and to make the camera save all photos to the sd card, not the internal.
I'm on Hydrogen 4.0.4 btw.
Cheers
Fox
If you are on aokp/aosp roms, you have to read and understand the problems in " sd card mountpoint" issue much more.
to save all the photos in external sd either you have to use ics camera from market or switch the storage location in "Storage" settings menu.
to mount both the cards on pc use the attached tool
Ah, thankyou very much, this is much better, and the camera ics+ rocks, finding much better quality.
What I wanted to ask was, with that prorgram, is there a way to make it so it replaces the stock usb connection, and so It only mounts the external sd not the internal?
And how do I navigate in apps, ie power amp to my external sd.

You can navigate your external SD just the usual way, select the music folders from "emmc" in power amp , it will show up in albums . There is no regular way to mount only the external. Both has different names when mounted, so you can differentiate easily.

Ah thank-you very much. You're a life saver. One last question. Is there anyway to disable the default android USB pop up screen when you plug In the usb?
I'd like to make it so when I plug into into usb the clock app runs.

How Can I Get to My Data?

I have an Atrix with a broken digitizer. Unfortunately, I did not save important stuff like camera pictures to my external sd card. I also have a lock screen which appears to be preventing the phone from connecting to the computer when plugged into the usb drive. Anything I can do to get to the internal sd?
Thanks in advance.

Which recovery is installed in your phone? If you have clockworkmod, you can plug the phone in a computer through USB and mount your internal memory, that way you can recover what's in the internal sdcard.
I have rom racers recovery installed, so it should have that option somewhere.

If all else fails, buy a lapdock. If $60 would be worth saving .your data.
I don't know if this works on Atrix(on defy it doesn't), but you could try to dump your data-partition with the linux/max commandline-tool "sbf_flash":

Disk drive mode

BASICALLY INTERNAL DRIVE READS AS CD-ROM AND NOT AS A PARTITION - HOW DO I FIX THIS?
Hey
Disk drive mode is killing me
I was one of the first to get this phone - I like HTC products
But ever since I received this phone I cannot access my internal storage when I plug it into disk drive mode. Why is this and how can I fix it?
I thought both internal and external are plug and play ready (meaning no driver needed to access to info), But for some strange reason my internal 9 gbs will not come up, my external is fine.
I would like to fix this issue today (searching all over the web for the answer) but I am trying to set up a wireless syncing with my phone and I am going to be using my external sd as my media and files and my internal for android system stuff.
I am thinking about formatting my internal memory but I need to first take the info out of it.

Replace Virtual CD on the HTC EVO 4G LTE
Every now and then, a mod so unique pops up that it bears closer examination. For HTC EVO 4G LTE owners, a mod such as this has appeared. When booted into a Sense ROM and connected to a PC, one will notice that the device mounts as two drives. One is the internal storage, and the other is a CD-ROM. Yes, a CD-ROM. Naturally, upon discovering this, the first step is to see if it can be used for something else. As it turns out, it can be.
XDA Recognized Contributor closeone has discovered that there is a file on the EVO LTE called PCTOOL.ISO, which is what causes the EVO LTE to show up as a CD-ROM when it’s plugged into a PC. Closeone explains why it is there and what can be done about it:
There is a file named PCTOOL.ISO inside the /system/etc directory that normally contains the HTC Sync Manager Software. By replacing that ISO with another, it’ll mount that one instead. Because there isn’t too much room to spare in the /system partition, the file should probably be kept relatively small.
There are a number of things users can put in place of the HTC Sync Manager Software, although not a whole lot of things have been tested yet. In theory, though, quite a few useful tools can be placed here, as closeone says:
1. ROM Developers can include a package that contains a copy of the ADB and Fastboot executables within their ROM. ADB would be useful while the device is on; Fastboot would probably have to be copied to the computer.
2. Because the ISO is mounted as Read-Only media, it could be incredibly useful for field technicians who need to run portable software, without the risk of being infected with a virus on the host machine.
Being able to run portable software without thread of virus is definitely something anyone could benefit from. Aside from being one of the more unique mods on XDA, having functionality like this on the EVO LTE can lead to various possibilities.
To learn more, check out the original thread."

Yeah that works but I don't want to put my phone in recovery mode every time I want to access my internal.

No I am just looking to get my internal Memory in my phone to open up like a disk drive without the use of any drivers. (Basically have my my internal memory work just like how my external memory works)
Did you install anything to mount internal as a live cd? When I plug my USB and set to media sync I can now copy anything I want even if its over the 4gb max file limit.

Not that I know of, I only unlock, turned s off and flashed 2 roms on it. My current rom is recent meanrom
Got media sync to work.
I had to delete everything inside of the internal memory to get it to work

Getting rid of MTP/PTP

Please tell me there is some sort of flashable zip to get rid of MTP/PTP.
If I can't get standard USB mode on this S3 I'm getting rid of it, MTP is like the worst way of connected to a PC in my opinion.
All the downsides are not worth not having to mount / disconect the drive.
*Note : I use my phone for my work, MTP makes doing any one job over twice as long as I have to transfer the file to my pc in order to edit it, then I need to send it back.
With USB disk I just edit the file/photo/video directly on the devices drive, huzzah so much time saved!)
I tried SG3 easy UMS but it doesn't disable MTP with the rom I am using.
ive been lookng for ways to get UMS too. Easy UMS is giving me problems. Sometimes it just doesnt work and no drives MTP nor UMS drives show on my PC.
Im on Omega rom with Perseus kernel.
The storage mode has been removed all together as android no longer really supports it. Even Google has done away with it.

Has been said 1234578 times. No way for internal sdcard, easyUms for external.
That's it. I agree mtp sucks, not working on my Windows 7 computer. Easy ums works well here.
This is where USB OTG comes in handy
Thank you for the replies everyone.
Looks like I'm downgrading to my sensation then
Shall send some dissapointed emails to Google/HTC/Samsung etc though as if they're really trying to make mtp standard that's just silly. (Hell it's bloody useless even for media transfer, I put HD movies on my phone and don't bother optimising them for the phone so they're often rather large files. maximum average transfer I see with MTP is 5MB/s if I use USB disk on my sensation with same SD card I get 15+MB/s)
Shame though as some roms for my note n7000 disable MTP so was hoping the same could be done for the s3 :[
Not a big fan of the emulated SD card as well, just makes finding files in recovery a pain in the arse
If this is the way Android is heading looks like I need to find another smart phone OS D:
One thing that could help me keep the s3 is if I could automate easy UMS so when I connect the phone I get a prompt asking me if I want to mount my sd card. ( if that is already a feature, it doesn't work with slim rom) Don't really care for what ever is on the emulated sd card anyway so don't care if that connects with MTP.
( Please don't suggest I just plug the card into a card reader, I use a alluminium bumper case that bolts on so quick swapping is not possible)

It may have been an option if Samsung had released the proper documentation on this chip like they promised at first but then changed their mind.

i feel the same way about MTP but it's not that BIG a deal. Easy UMS is a good alternative. i had a Sensation as well and you couldn't even access the internal memory, you could only access the memory stick via flash drive. atleast you can access both internal and external sd card using MTP. just put the files on your ext sdcard and use Easy UMS for quick editing of the files. from there you can move the file to your int sdcard using some type of file manager.

I suppose that is an option thanks for the suggestion.
Going to be a pan in the arse setting all my apps to save things to external sd mind.

Recovering Deleted Photos/Videos ???

Hey guys, I accidentally deleted some family photos/videos on the LGOG. They were stored on the external SD card.
Is there any app that would help recover/restore those files?
Thanks
There isnt an app, but you could either hookup your phone with a usb cable or get a micro sd card adapter to hookup it up to your computer. Then use the program called Recuva. You can download it for free and it works really well. I've used it multiple times.

Great. Thaks
I'll give it a try
Installed Recuva.
Plugged my LGOG to the desktop. The desktop detects and I can browse the files.
However, Recuva doesn't seem to detect my LGOG as an external drive so it couldn't scan it.
Any suggestions?

Take the card out of the phone, put it in an adapter, and plug the adapted card into either your PCs built in card reader or a USB reader. Gets around potential driver issues
