[Q] Can i install a system app from one phone as user app on another? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so i have this really old phone (Samsung Captivate) with a really awesoem clock app. But its a system app and i want to install it on one of my other phones (Galaxy Nexus) as a user app.
They both are NOT running stock ROM. In fact the Cappy is on 4.2.1 and the Nexus on 4.2.2.
Not a big differnece, right? So i presume this would be possible.
Before you ask, i did do research on this and found nothing but moving one user app from one phone to another phone as a user app, etc. Nothing with moving a system app from one phone to user app on another.
If you want i can upload the apk file for you guys/gals to see. Just ask. (My phone is dead at the moment)
Thanks,
Jack

Surely yes. Try it (copy the apk to the GNexus and launch it with your file manager).

so all i do is install as if a normal apk?
gonna go ahead and try it

[Q] Question about APK files.

Hello!
First and foremost i apologize if this has already been answered (I'd guess it has since it's a pretty basic question). I tried doing various searches (here and google) and all they brought back was how to install APK files . My question is if I take an APK from my phone can I install it on another device? Sorry I'm still a bit new to Android and dont know much about how APKs work and if there is security restrictions embedded in them making them only work on the device they were downloaded to or anything of the sort.
Thanks!
To my knowledge there are no such restrictions on APKs. You can pull them from one phone to be installed on others as you see fit.
Awesome, thanks for the quick reply!

If it's system apk's you will run into issues when pulling from different phones. All really depends
Running ICScrewD ROM
yes and no. basically whats been said. a system app (aka one that i on the phone after a stock flash) will most likely not work from phone to phone unless it is the same type of phone on the same rom. however market type apps (including downloaded apps from the internet) will most likely transfer from phone to phone
Astro manager extracts non system apps you have installed into apks. Makes it ridiculously easy to send an app you have to your friends. Your app data is not included in the apk. One of the best features of astro manager in my book.
Sent from my páhhōniē
Its market apps, so i think ill be good to go! system apps i could definitely see not working though, guessing they're more hardware/system specific.
Thanks for all the responses!

Nexus Q Working on ICS

I have some of this posted in the Q&A but thought it deserved a thread here as I now have it working with Google Play Music on ICS. I have not been able to get the new YouTube application ported over to ICS yes but I'm still working on it.I could probably get this working on Gingerbread by changing the manifest again but I no longer have a GB device so if someone really wants it let me know.
What you need:
The modified NexusQ.apk file from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28636772&postcount=23
The new 4.3.605 Google Play Music apk which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19423409&postcount=1
A Nexus Q and WiFi network.
A device running ICS. I used my Bionic running leaked ICS but I did have to root in order to install the new 605 Play Music application.
Instructions:
Install the new (4.3.605) Google Play Music application from Steve0007's posted linked above. If you get an "Existing package with same signature.." error you will need to do the following (this is what worked on my Bionic):
WARNING: ROOTING YOUR DEVICE AND CHANGING THE SYSTEM FILES CAN CAUSE BAD THINGS TO HAPPEN, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!
Root your device (I used this method on my Bionic: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...gh-releases-ics-leak-root-exploit-bionic.html.) Install Root Explorer from the market and delete the existing com.google.android.play.music.xxx.xx.xxx apk from /system/app. Reboot device. Copy 605 apk to device and install.
END SCARY ROOT WARNING
Install the modified NexusQ.apk, plug in the Q, turn on Bluetooth on your device (it will prompt you to if you don't) and get connected! I had to go through the process several times before it successfully paired up but from what I've read the same is true on JB devices as well. If you need to wipe out the Q you do so by unplugging it, plugging it back in and as soon as the blue ring starts place your palm over the single LED on the top until the ring goes from flashing red to swirling purple. This will factory reset the device. Since getting both my Bionic and Xoom paired it's worked well.
Enjoy until the official ICS and below apps drop from Google.
If anyone is successful at getting the JB YouTube application working on ICS please let me know.
Thanks to everyone that helped me get this working!
Thanks a ton!!! I've added a link to this in my roll-up (here) in the general thread so others will find it. I'm now able to use my Nexus Q, thanks again!
Eventually I'll start learning to do some dev work :/
I followed your directions but I still cannot stream anything, I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. I was able to get the Nexus Q 8 Ball easter Egg to work.
What is your current status? Do you have the 4.3.605 music player installed? If so you should have the little "beam" icon on the top right when playing music and tapping that should make the Q almost instantly start streaming that song.

Sorry it doesn't work. I'm on a Galaxy Nexus on CM9 and the NexusQ.apk installs and says play music needs to be updated but it doesn't update. When I try installing the APK it says application not installed. Nexus Q installs and sets up but still will not work with play movies or youtube. Very disappointed in google

Did you read the part about needing to manually remove the old play music application via root explorer (or a simple uninstall if allowed)? Have you tried either?
I wasn't too happy with Google either but the support page for the NQ does say that it is only working on JB until purchased units start shipping. Plus I've learned a lot getting this to work! ;-)

Yes I read that but the old play music was not in the system\apps directory but it was still installed so not sure. I force stopped it and uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still would not let me install the one listed.
Hmmm, I think that's two of you with problems installing on CM9. I don't have anything running that ROM (and you can probably tell I'm already pretty much at the limits of my skills) but perhaps it is installed differently in that ROM. Unfortunately I don't think I can help you with this one.

Just though I should specify what rom I had success with. I copied the app to /system/app folder and changed the permissions. I did NOT have google music previously installed. When I ran the app to install it said install failed. I then installed the NexusQ app directly from my SD card, which installed no problems. I did not try to run the NexusQ app and rebooted the phone. Once rebooted i turned on my WIFI and bluetooth and launched the NexusQ app and rebooted the Nexus Q. The app paired up with the Q no problem. I was then able to run Google Music app and play to the Q with no issues. *NOTE* When i walked out of the house (i did not manually disconnect the wifi or bluetooth, just hit the stop play music button and turned off the TV and receiver) and came back later, turned the TV and receiver back on, the visualizations or music track would not show at all. Just the NexusQ home screen. I rebooted the Q and everything is working fine again.
No, youtube does not work (which I think is posted an original post somewheres). It seems that a ported app will be needed to push youtube videos to the Q. I cannot test Google movies/TV as I dont own any.
I've tried exactly this on my HTC One S running ICS (albeit with HTC Sense) and can't get it to stream to the Q.
Everything installs fine (if I move it to /system/apps and change the permissions as mentioned) but I see no option in the Play Music app to stream to the Q.
Additionally, the new Play Music app looks it has lost quite a bit of functionality to the previous version - perhaps indicating that the installation went badly? For instance, there are much fewer options on the settings page and there's no option to choose or configure my Google account anywhere.
bobukcat - is this the case for you?

Yes that worked for me!
It still took a bunch of tries to get it to do anything though.
For a long time, and several reboots, the Q didn't show up in the list of devices in Play Music...
No idea what I did, but all of a sudden it showed up.
Volume control from the phone still doesn't work, and YouTube/Videos don't work either.
At least now I can enjoy it a bit until they release the real apps.
Thanks a ton for all the pointers and packages!
What order did you install the packages? Play Music first and then the Q app? Or the other way around?

The Q app first.
When the Q finally showed up in the new Play Music app, it was after turning wifi off/on a few times ... don't know if that's what finally did it though.

No, my play music application has all the previous functionality and even more options in Settings, including Nexus Q settings. Did you install the Q application first? I don't know why this would matter but that is what I did.
Did you just move the new play music apk to the /system/app location or did you actually install it from application manager in Astro or other file manager? I don't know that just moving the apk to that folder will work (I don't think I even tried that) so you may have to delete the old one, reboot and then install the new one from the apk. Please try that and let us know if it works.

Yeah, I've tried to rebuild the YouTube application from JB with a new manifest multiple times but I still can't get it to work right, I did finally get it to install but it just constantly FCs and never really runs. Clearly someone much more skilled than I (which wouldn't take much) at modifying apks would need to look into this or we just wait for the official app from Google to drop.
Strange that the volume control from your phone doesn't work, as long as I'm in the Play Music application it works fine on both my Bionic and Xoom.
As reported in the OP I too had lots of errors and force closes, etc. when trying to get this to run the first time but from what I've read that happens on JB devices too and in fact I had a few on my Xoom running TeamEOS nightlies.

INCREASE DPI - Phone App FC Fix..

I want to change the LCD Density to a higher value on my Galaxy because its all a bit too small for me.
I am using an app called Resolution Changer (and have tried a few other similar apps that do the same job and work fine) to set the the phone to a higher DPI and all becomes much more usable and looks bit bigger and better on screen. Everything works perfectly smoothly except the Samsung Phone/Contacts/Messaging & Camera apps that instantly FC. The Messaging and Camera apps don't matter because I simply use a 3rd party app and the problem gets easily solved. However the Phone/Contacts app is a real problem because the phone becomes useless as "phone".. and using a 3rd party dialer doesn't fix the problem because these add-on dialers still need the native phone app to actually make/receive a call (basically Android 3rd party dialers are actually just a skin on top of the native phone app).
I have been reading that the Phone/Contacts app from 4.2 leak allows for working at higher DPI without any problems or crashes.
Could someone verify this information and if possible, post a download link of the S3 Phone/Contacts app from 4.2 so I can try? I have no idea where to get the correct Phone/Contacts apk
Thanks very much in advance for any feedback or and help in getting the correct file/s.

You can't simply use the apk from 4.2. You'd need the whole rom.
Another suggestion... maybe mention "increase dpi, phone app fc" in title as I think there maybe some modified versions that people may know about?

What I mean is if you're on 4.1.2, the 4.2 apk probably wont work, so you will need to be on the right ROM.. Also you need root if you just want the apks, they're not installable. Probably will work across all 4.2 samsung devices, but not 4.1.2 devices.

Correct. I am already on 4.2 ROMs on my devices and they are all rooted. And certainly the Phone/Contacts apps are not installable. I will just push them directly into the system/app directory and overwrite the current ones. After wipping all of their data & caches & clearing settings on some dependencies plus a reboot, I am hoping it will work. And all is backed, so the risk and liability are zero.. whatever doesn't work or renders any experiment into a failure, is just a CWM Recovery away
So all I need now is a 4.2 ROM Phone/Contacts apks from the S3 and see where that leads me to:highfive:

Download something like Omega or Wanam lite in "Android development". Wanam lite, smaller so quicker to rip the apk's out of. Both deodexed.

Oh OK.. that I know then, simple. I just asked because many ROMs and flashable image zips are just full of IMGs, TARs & BINs instead of actual individual apps and files. I will download the ROMs you suggested (if I can find them) and give it a try. If works I'll post it so other members can do the same if also wanting to chang DPI on their machines. . [Q] Samsung Captivate to Motorola Atrix 4g

Hello Guys and Gals,
I have a problem. My father is going from Android 2.0 to Android 4.0.4. He has alot of notes he took on Memo and wants to transfer them to the new phone. I have backuped all his files on the sd card and external to his new phone but I am having trouble finding both the current app for Memo and the files that contain the notes. I have looked for the creator of the app but its no where to be found on the phone. I rooted his phone long time ago. Super user doesn't function anymore so I cant TB. Any ideas on how to get his notes working? If you need any other info, let me know.

So. Your father went from a captivate (galaxy s, I belive) to an atrix with ics?
What kind of app is Memo, does it came preinstalled or downloaded from playstore?
Usually, all the data files for an app are on /data/data/<appname>
You can download another superuser app from playstore (SuperSu I think was one).

The memo app is the default one. I have already tried installing the different Super Users but they all don't work when I log into TB. I will have to look in that folder. I still need to find that app so I can restore his notes on the new phone.
Ok. Seems to me the only way is re rooting the device. The data dir isn't accesible without root. Then you should be able to use tb to transfer the app

Add app to priv app folder

I use gsam battery app which has a rooted device secondary app that must be installed in the system/priv app folder. My g power won't let me install it because of dynamic partition.
My Galaxy Tab S7 has the same deal but let's me install it with no problem.
The gsam app is pretty much useless without this rooted ad on.
Anyone have an idea how to overcome this?
