Android as a print server - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've spent so much time on this and it seems impossible, but wth, you're XDA, here goes.
Got a new printer, no 802.11a/b/g/n on it nor RJ45, cannot into networking. Photon 4G happily usb-hosting, printer detected by USB Host Controller.
How can I use it as a print server? I've looked for apps on the Play Store that support USB printing but none of them seem to support my device or require a middleman (PrinterShare, Let's Print Droid, etc.). Current idea is to run Ubuntu/Debian (inside Android, because thanks Motorola for not releasing source), but will it detect USB devices? Wlan is middleman-ed, with Android taking monitor capability away for the most part, so idk, give me a heads up.
Anyone have ideas or is in the same boat? Thanks.

Bump, would appreciate some ideas.

[Q] Printing to Wireless Printers

I just purchased the G Tablet and I have two (2) wireless printers in my house available to print to. Unfortunately, I am having a difficult time trying to figure out how to print webpages and photos to my wireless printers. I don't believe I can download the drivers that came with these printers because they will not work with the G Tablet Operating System. Please advise how do I evoke printing capabilities on my G Tablet? Thank you for the feedback. Gary
Get chrome browser on pc and cloud printer app from the market

I tried CloudPrint. The Cloud Print app on the G tablet says "there are no accounts set up on this phone".
Uh, a few problems with Cloud Print from the g tablet
1. The G-tablet is not a phone, but an android wi-fi tablet.
2. Cloud Print app doesn't provide any link to or menu to set up an account on the 'phone'.
3. I've got a Gmail account set up and I can log in to it on the tablet. But that doesn't help...
4. It's sort of a useless app at this point, at least for the generic G-tablet.
Hopefully some day soon, Android OS (and app developers) will get their head's out of their proverbial butts and recognize that to be taken seriously as an app and OS, Android OS and apps need to look beyond being a 'cell phone' OS or app but an OS and app that can seamlessly work on cells, tablets, and pc's running Android...
I use Printershare. It's a paid app ($4.99 or something) and works great.
I can print to my wired printer via a service running on my home pc from anywhere and I can just print directly to my wireless printer while I'm on the home network. My wireless printer wasn't specifically listed so I tried a similar lower model and it printed without issue. If using the printershare service running on the PC...it doesn't matter the printer driver for the tablet as it's printing via the PC.

Go find the printbot app. It works great for me. YMMV

[Q] printing from prime?

I'm looking for a solution to print from my Prime while at work. I have two different printers in my office (no network) and would like to be able to print from at least one of them. Is there a way to print directly from the Prime that I'm not aware of? The only solution I can think of is using PrinterShare and getting a bluetooth adapter like the BT-0260-v2 from premiertek.
Can someone else shine some light on the situation?
Thanks.
There is a way to cloud print using google Chrome. You need to be signed in on the computer connected to the printer thought.

There is an app called PrintBot that I use. Free version supports one printer. Works great for me.

And all main printer companies have developed Android app to print on their machine.. all in market.
The printers aren't hooked up to a network. I'm looking for a way to print directly from the Prime. Any other solutions or am I stuck for now? One is a fax machine that can scan and print as well (a Lexmark X5650) the other is a Dell laser printer that is hooked up to the office computer but I can disconnect that if needed.

If they're hooked up to computers with Google cloud print signed in I think that would work but if they're totally disconnected from a network or an online computer, perhaps bluetooth (if the printers had those features) may work. Never tried printing via bluetooth though but my really old Lexmark all-in-one could do it from my old Nokia n82.
Physically connecting the Prime to the printer won't work since the Prime isn't a true computer with drivers and other stuff to accommodate the printer.
If your printers have a print from SD card or flash drive feature then I suppose you can transfer the file straight from the Prime to one of those media first.
the best solution is cloud printing. You install chrome on your computer and make a gmail account. Once your signed in go to the Tool top right, and go to Options then Under the Hood then scroll down until you see Google Cloud Printing and click on Manage Print Settings. You should of been redirected to Google's Cloud Printing Manage area. You'll add a classic printer and thats it. As far as ive noticed this system will send the request to your gmail account, and your browser will send it to the printer when ever it can.
Works great! Only works on iphones if they buy a app. But for us its free its called Cloud Print. It's amazing, you can print anything and it works.

The only solution in that case, is to install a chroot Linux distro on the Prime and once running chrooted Linux you can install printers, at the condition that usb dock port accepts connection to a printer.
Search BT5 linux thread to have guidelines and howto for installing linux.

[Q] A new Atrix OS with open Linux installation.

Hello XDA Developers!
tl;dr I need either a solid, light OS replacement for Android 2.3 on my Atrix, or I need a video streaming and virtualization app with no lag that works between android devices and either windows or linux desktop.
First I'd like to say how impressed I am with you folks. Massive amounts of work most be done on a regular basis, and so I tip my hat to you in thanks for looking at my potential problem/question.
I've got two devices that I'd like to make some serious software changes to, one of them my Atrix (the other is a Flytouch Tablet ARM11 with Android 2.3, but that's for a different forum). Let me start by saying that I like to think of myself as very technically literate, but when it comes to linux I just don't have nearly as much experience as I do with windows/mac, and it is about to really show.
What I want to do is load a light Linux OS on these devices. Normally, if I was going to install a new windows kernel on a machine I would copy an ISO to a USB thumb drive and make the drive bootable (using the MS program Windows 7 USB/DVD maker), then startup the PC and either through the BIOS or by hitting the proper button during the startup sequence I would ask the PC to boot into the drive and begin the installation.
Questions:
What is the image file type for mobile OS's?
How would one choose the right type of linux OS for an Atrix?
What is the difference between flashing a ROM and installing and OS?
Why is it when I updated my phone recently that it became unrooted?
(and) Is there any way to revert this process to make rooting easier?
Is there any way to capture a video output (like a stream) and broadcast it to these mobile devices so I can avoid changing their software alltogether?
(and) Could I just remotely control another PC from the mobile device, letting it do all the actual computing?
Can I use the Webtop Dock as a monitor for my desktop if I can find the proper HDMI cable to connect it to the HDMI output on my desktop video card?
(and) Can I also connect the Micro USB and use the keyboard/mouse (hooked into my desktop motherboard) on it as well?
(and finally) Can I use my Atrix as a prototype omni-tool by docking it in a docking station, attaching various tools that work with a linux operating system (wide-spectrum ultrasound imaging, temperature monitors, vital monitors, electronic laser saw (USB) (with separate power attachment of course) and extendable, movable USB cameras?) and then strapping it onto my wrist with a cool leather bracer design?
My end-goal is to have all three of these devices on the same network, with the ability to seamlessly access my data between them. For example, if I'm working on a document, I'd like to be able to access the document in a document editing program across all the platforms (imagine google docs with multiple users) however with one MAJOR stipulation: I'll be on a local network with NO INTERNET ACCESS!
Briefly (to better help you understand just what I'm trying to do) I am a freelance archaeologist/deep sea explorer/ROV tinkerer about to do a series of surveys mostly by myself in some VERY remote locations. I'll have a Wi-Fi network to link all of my devices together running out of my boat, but it's only for data sharing between each other, and since Satellite Internet is a joke, I can't think of any way to get data out there, and I've decided to live without it while I'm away.
I have a webtop dock for my Atrix, and the environment developed by Motorola is far too restrictive. I've tried countless fixes to try and get the webtop2SD to work, but I must be doing something wrong (Maybe the latest update screwed it?). I think since I'd like to use some linux applications while on the mobile devices, I would rather install a custom OS for both.
OR (preffered)
Even more simply, I'd like to stream the video feed and remotely control my desktop PC (located on the boat) on the mobile devices, but with yet another stipulation: I can't have FPS lag (I usually get 1-2 FPS with all the virtualization and remote control apps I've tried). This would in some senses be the preferred option, since I really don't want to spend oodles of hours trying to get some program to work in a difficult, restricted environment like these mobile device's current OS's. Is there a good, non-lagging version of desktop virtualization for Android OS?
About that webdock: I can't seem to find a female-to-female micro HDMI cable anywhere on the internet, thought I did find one Micro HDMI extension cable, and bought it promptly. I could buy another, but cut the male ends off and splice the female parts together (**** just got kinky). But if I could, would this work?
Phew that was a lot! Again thanks so much for thinking for me!
I've personally never found any kind of remote desktop software that works without lag, but it might be possible to find some. Someone else might know what to tell you there.
After doing some basic searching, the only collaborative document solution that I've found has been Etherpad Lite. You could set up a desktop or laptop running linux as the server, and all the other devices on your small network could (theoretically) run a browser based client similar (but far less advanced) than Google Docs. This way, everything on your LAN/WLAN could access the application, if it's stout enough to support your needs.
https://github.com/Pita/etherpad-lite
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collab...Real-time_collaborative_text_editing_software
Everything you're looking for just seems to be limited for Android, I wish you the best of luck.
I have always found Teamviewer great for remote PC control from my Atrix. They have a nice app and free license for home/personal use. I get minimal lag controlling my PC at home when at work, but that's over WiFi. Not very fast and pretty laggy if I am on data with my Atrix.
BTW............I can work on documents, transfer files to and from PC's and laptops, print documents on my wireless printer, etc. across my home network from my Atrix, all routed through a Netgear WNR3500L running stock firmware (dd-wrt actually slowed my network down and reduced WiFi range considerably, so I reverted to stock).
First, there is no "magic" within the lapdock device. It is a nice HDMI screen, a couple crappy input devices on the USB side, and a battery. The standard Moto software does recognise the usb device and do some software magic, but certainly you could use the dock on it's own w/o the phone.
As to completely replacing the /osh webtop OS that Motorola provides, that is challanging.
There are 2 basic ways to open it up though. Go to the developers subforum and look for webtop2sd and "full Debian".
Somebody did post recently with an attempt to fully replace the webtop OS. he was using gentoo, so look for that and you should find it. But I suspect it is early, and likely to be a significant WP.
As to learning all this ****. If you do some Linux developement or heavy hacking (which it kind of sounds like) you should set up a full full blown 'droid dev platform and start playing. It is big and bulky, but you will learn faster that way than just searbhing around.
EDIT: just reread your post that you are light on Linux. if you want to do anything more than just follow along, it might be a good idea to setup something like an Ubuntu and get familiar there. 'Droid is way different looking (it really basterdises things around) but yoiu need to know both if you want to play with webtop hacks.
Thanks all. I'll look around again to see if I can find the threads you mentioned. I've tried Webtop2SD but to no success so far.
Thanks again.

USB over TCP tool that will allow me to repair ppls phones remotely?

I recently purchased uni android tool and am wanting to know if there is a solution that will allow clients to connect their phone to their computers via usb and then some how have it show up on mine as if it was a connected usb device? I have a few friends that have phones and dont want to have to mail them out so this would allow me to work on them remotely.
THanks!
Not exactly what you are looking for, but you could just use rdp or vnc to remote to their desktop, then use a link to your Google drive or drop box to download your software. You could then have then plug in at their end, you fix the phone, them clean up your downloaded files and uninstall the program.
Not a great business model, but would probably work for friends.
Another options is to build a small virtual box with all your tools and such on it. Then you connect with rdp or vnc, install VB, and so the work. The plus side to this is, your VB can be encrypted and password protected, so no one can "steal" your tools, and everything would be set up and ready, and you would have your preferred operating system, in case they used something else, like a mac/Apple product.
Thanks for the response.... that idea would definitely work except the tool I use hardware locks itself to my windows machine.... I had to install windows 10 via bootcamp on my macbook just to run the software as it wouldnt even run in a virtual machine.
I am looking into just writing my own custom software that will handle the usb over tcp via a server and clients.
If anyone else knows any solutions that are already available please let me know.
GOOD
Thank you for that information you article

Acer Chromebook CB3-131 - how to get android apps and Playstore?

For several years now google has had the Acer Chromebook CB3-131 on Planned for android apps and Playstore, but so far no updates, either they forgot it or its going to be updated in far future. Is there any option to get android apps and maybe Playstore working?
I don't really want to install anything on this one as it only has 16GB storage and always get "out of storage space" popup(even with only a few apps installed, chomeOS is too big for 16GB), but Android apps is the only way to get it to print to network printer as Google Cloud print has been discontinued and this laptop not yet has linux.
And the fact that Cannon dropped the ball and never made a Chromebook driver for it, so can't even use it by USB. There are android app for this printer and also Linux driver.

https://ph.canon/en/support/PIXMA MG3070__ MG3070S__ MG3077/model
The printer is Cannon PIXMA MG3070S announced as Cloud Print ready when I bought it a year ago(only to find out Cloud Print were going to be discontinued, after the purchase)
It works fine with my Xubuntu laptop but not the Chromebook. Even before, Cloud print only worked if my laptop were online and on the same network. Very annoying.
I can't be that I have to get my GF another laptop just to be able to print, that is just too stupid and there has to be a work around.
Hope someone here can crack that nut
Thank you in advance
Jan
I guees nobody have a solution for this or care!
