Nexus 10 vs Note 10.1 - Nexus 10 General

Ok guys, my friend's Note 10.1 got in a bootloop and he asked me to fix it for him, as it will be with me for a few days and I've already fixed it I decided to do a comparison, feel free to ask for my opinion on things I don't mention.
First off I guess I'll start with the ports
On the left side there's nothing on the Note while on our Nexus we have the Micro USB port and the 3.5mm headphone jack, on the right side we have the micro HDMI out, the note doesn't have anything on this side either.
At the bottom we find the pogo charger on the N10 and the charger/USB/MHL port in the Note, the S Pen is located in the right bottom corner, there's a Mic located at the bottom in both of them.
At the top we find the volume rocker and the power/lock key while on the Note we find those along with an IR blaster and a Holy Micro SD card slot (god damn it google)
It's also worth noting that the Note doesn't have NFC.
This is subjective but the tacky back and sides of the Nexus make it far easier to hold and it feels solider., the glossy back on the Note doesn't feel nearly as bad as I thought it would.
The speakers
I didn't think I would write anything about these but after some use I noticed the speakers on the Note sound better, this must be thanks to Samsung's tuning, as I'm almost completely sure these devices share the same hardwarein this area, perhaps we can copy it?
Oh and by the way the Note has different sound profiles on the video player and Music app, all of them sound better but this isn't limited to these apps, the difference is found across all apps, launch Youtube or third party music players and you'll notice it.
I'll talk about the performance without bringing the benchmarks here as you can find those everywhere else, for this test I´ll be comparing my sister's N10 (which isn't rooted and is completely stock) with the stock Note.
The Note is running 4.1.2 while my sister's N10 is running 4.2.2, I'll start by clearing all recents and closing everything with the task manager on the Note
Scrolling across the homescreens and the app drawer is really smooth on both however there are micro lags on the Note - Disregard that, I had one update left and wehn I did it it got rid of the micro lags while this doesn't happen on the Nexus, I suspect this is the launcher's fault tough.
Launching apps happens at pretty much the exact same time most o the time, the Nexus is faster by fraction of a second some times.
The note does have more free RAM all of the time as it's GPU doesn't need as much of it as the on the N10, It can use as much as 1.78gbs of it while we can only use 1.2gbs
For the browser comparison I'll be using chrome beta on both, all browsing data has been cleared. I can compare the AOSP browser performance but I'd have to use my N10.
I'll just say that the sites load faster the Nexus, after that the browser experience is pretty much the same until you pinch to zoom which brings us to the screen section.
Edit: The S Pen is really useful when browsing as it can act as a mouse when you hover on website dropdown menus and the like.
The screens
This is probably where the biggest differences can be seen (as long as we don't talk about touchwiz), coming from the Nexus 10 you'll inmediately see the jagginess and lack of detail every f*cking where in the Note, from HD videos to text to images, sadly, this is the only thing the Nexus has going for it in the screen department.
The Note has a MUCH, MUCH better color reproduction, the next time I get my hands on my dad's iPad 3 I'll update this to tell you about a comparison between those 2 screens, I think the iPad looks better though.
Not only that but Samsung has also provided it with color modes which are a good thing to have, black levels between the N10 and the Note are comparable they are maybe a little darker in the note HOWEVER I've noticed the Nexus has a better black level (I believe that's how it's called, for reference go here www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php) The note has trouble with the darker tones.
The screen on the note is far far more responsive than the one in the Nexus I beleieve this is a software issues icause on purpose in the Nexus, do the following:
Open the your favorite broswer and make your thumb and index finger touch each other as when you prepare to pinch to zoom, now, with both fingers together start the pinch gesture, you'll notice how the Nexus will NOT begin to pinch to zoom until your fingers are about 1/3" apart from each other, This isn't a hardware issue as if you enable the show touches option in developer setting yo ucan see the device is registering both of them.
Now download and install the Quickpic gallery app from the Play store and pinch to zoom the same way in there, you'll see how that app behaves, the is the way the Note/HP Touchpad/iPad behave when you pinch to zoom in them.
Edit: I forgot to mention that the Note doesn't have any kind of backlight bleed.
The camera
Well, while the Samsung camera app offers many more options than the stock 4.2 camera.for some reason it takes longer to focus and the pictures are NEVER even close to the quality the N10 offers, the pictures are just terrible, I think this is the same sensor as the one in the N10 but for some reason the pictures are full of noise and lack detail.
The front facing camera is just as good as the one in the N10, Hell, I think it's better than the rear facing one, and like in the Nexus, it's one of the best front facing cameras I've seen. (It's miles ahead of the iPad)
Well, that's all I can think of at the moment, feel free to ask about other differences.

Have you done any gaming on the note 10.1? I am especially interested in hearing about heavy games like MC4 or so as sometimes my N10 lags during gameplay for MC4. It is however pretty smooth on other games like Nova 3 and asphalt 7 with gorgeous graphics.
Thanks in advance if you consider this.
Sent from my GT-N7100 or the Nexus 10, heaven knows.
Those who help noobs go to heaven. True story.

What about the battery life? I am really curious about this question.

Sometimes the nexus 10 has some laggs while using the chrome browser.
I also miss the 3g modul in the n10

The battery on the Nexus is a bit better (my sister has a lot of battery sucking apps though, and I'm UV'ed in my Nexus so I won't use it to compare it with the Note) I have yet to try any heavy games, I'll run NFSMW later today after I flash the Note as it went back to the damn bug even after the ODIN restore.

Don't use Chrome... Use the stock browser or Boat browser.
No lags, delays, anything - pinch to zoom is ultrasmooth and pages load fast.
I get the feeling that people experiencing lags or sluggish behavior are running a ton of un-optimized widgets, because I never had any problems and my benchmark results are stupidly high compared to anything else.

I know but you can't load the AOSP browser on the Nexus unless you root it, I could use mine for comparison though.

I actually had the note 10.1 before i got the nexus 10. It was the white version and boy was she pretty. Just a little too much plastic for my taste. The screen was gorgeous! With all honesty I enjoy it a little better then the nexus 10 screen. I guess I'm a rich color type of guy. The downside of the things was the fact I felt the screen was built for the s pen using only. Every time I tried to swipe across a application it would open that app up if I wasn't using the s-pen. It got to the point where it was unbearable to use. So I got the nexus 10 And been loving this beast every since. I love the feel of the tablet, the front speakers are nice and the most important reason why I fell in love with this thing. Stock android and The SPEED!!!! The speed is the fastest i seen on any android devices and i had them all. Also the camera is one of the best you can find on a tablet.

You say the screen was better on the Note?? I just returned the note because I couldn't stand reading text on it, it was just too fuzzy for my tired old eyes. I was assuming the Nexus would be better being that it has a higher resolution. I guess I'll have to make a Staples run and see if they have the Nexus' in stock and see for myself.

He meant color wise, the screen on the Nexus I'd the shapest one you'll find on any tablet, reading on it is great but whoever calibrated it crippled it on purpose.

The N10 is sharp and you will have no problems as far as reading text on it.

Note port?
So I love my Nexus 10, but I was wondering if anyone has tought of porting the Note 10.1 ROM to the Nexus? I just need a little more productivity from this tablet. Plus the stock browser is faster than the chrome.

my nexus 10 also has the hdmi slot.. why the note 10,1 uses a samsung dongle.. like a apple type variant.. only samsung approved

[Q] How would you rate the GT 10.1?

cnet reviews has a rating system for all of the electronic gadgets it rates, a scale of 1 to 10 on each of the following categories: design, features, and performance. They rated the GT 10.1 as 8, 6, and 8 respectively.
I was wondering how you all would rate the GT 10.1 based on those categories and the same scale.
I gotta say, I disagree with their assessment, especially when the ipad 2 got 9, 8, and 8 respectively. It's funny that they call out all the similarities between the 2 in terms of design with the only difference being the backing (GT 10.1 uses a plastic backing whereas ipad 2 uses aluminum)--& that is worth a whole point difference. I don't know.
I think that review is a little outdated, but I'm curious to see how everyone on here would rate it.
My rating would be a 9 (I don't think a plastic-backing is enough to knock off a point), 7, and 8 at least.
How I would rate the GT 10.1
design: 9 its the thinnest lightest tablet on the market.
features: 7 it isnt where androids phones are as far as apps and development but google has shown us that ti can and will be there.
performance: 9 the tab, even though is not refined yet i would still say it is blazing fast. only time i see lag is when i type in forums online.

Hate to piggy back on your review but that how exactly I feel. Only difference between I pad and this is that this will get better as more devs get involve. Pershoot is doing great job getting it started.
They gave the ipad2 more for performance? They should check the Tegra2 converted Ipad2 games and recalculate. Compare Galaxy on Fire 2, the Tegra2 Version has more Polygons and still more FPS.
And features 8 for Ipad2? Well, they never surf the web and miss some kind of flash, including browser games? That is a huge problem. And how to watch movies on ipads? Movies are 16:9 not 4:3, so you have to strech or to watch thick black borders reducing your effective tablet size down by 3-4 inches.
The only valid argument for an ipad2 are the offered apps - everything else is below 10.1. Oh and the metal backplate.
I'd have to go 9,7,9 too.
9 for design. Love it
6 on features. I only say this because i cant play any music on it that i transfered from my computer. and beleive me i have tried everything to fix it. Google music just closes right after being opened. Or if im lucky enough to have it not auto exit out it wont rexognize my music thats on the phone.
8 for performance. Some times it lags out super hard like a over loaded computer from the 90's. Yes i make sure memery ram is atleast half emtpy and fresh restarts but idk. Lags hard 1/3 of the time.
BUT the web browsing almost makes up for all of this. Id rather brows on my tab then my $1800 custom build desk top. Next to non on web! Hope they update software and fix this stuff. Cause i know the hardware is amazing. Just need to work the kinks out and get some more apps and widgets and ill be in the 10's and 10's all around !
Design: 8
Thin and light, looks really good. Pleasure to hold.
Features: 6
No micro SD on an Android tablet, seriously? Even the optional keyboard dock and media dock don't include SD or USB ports.
Performance: 6
Tegra 2 is weak at video decoding. Android 3.1 is sluggish and unresponsive at times. Lots of room for improvement.
Design: 9 (10 because I have the google i/o edition!)
It's amazingly thin, it has a widescreen (wtf ipad?) and with a nice case it goes along nicely with a backpack.
Features: 7
No sd card slot. Proprietary ports. Missing some key apps like netflix and so on.
Performance: 7
My issues with performance are more of an issue with honeycomb. Slow web browsing, unable to hide the bottom bar completely, sometimes lags/crashes.
My biggest issues are really with honeycomb, it does feel like a beta product. But in comparison the ipad wouldn't fair to well in MY scoring system. The only thing the ipad has is iOS feels more stable and it has more apps. Everything else it performs much worse. From design to features.

Count me in this boat as well. I wouldnt trade it for any other tablet, including the Toshiba. The performance, combined with the build quality & form factor, and the sexiness of this device has me all-in.
Love it. I almost didnt buy it after the whole microSD craze, but even though I'd love to have it, that was wuhayyy overblown. There's so many ways to create extra storage and to interconnect devices easily.
9-7-9
Not bothered about micro sd, if we didn't have that propriety port then 9-9-9.
I can't understand why developers choosing to make more iOS apps counts against the 10.1 in ratings. It shouldn't be held against the tablet if developers prefer to write for the iPad more than the Android.
Design: 9
Very thin and light, however is hard to grab without a cover. (too thin lol)
Features: 8
No micro SD is fine for me, everything else was OK.
Performance: 4
I wouldn't feel happy with the performance at current state, it doesn't feel smooth when switching screen. You can see the widget jiggling from side to side when you pull the screen slowly but it does feel great if you tab the side to flip around. My iPad1 was way more smooth compared with 10.1.
I still couldn't find any reading app in honeycomb that is able to turn a page as smooth as iPad1.
9.5 /9/6
Only a tard would give it an 8 in first category. Unless I'm comparing to the future this thing is amazingly designed. No corners, no typical metallic back ,really thin bezel but not so thin that it interferes with screen use. 16:9 gorgeous hd screen. Great speaker placement and quality.
Only shortcomings of course are lack of built in ports... but with sd usb hdmi all possible via attachment its a plus that you end up with the best of both worlds.
(I'm only talking to aesthetics not value)
No portrait only home button.
Good quality cameras on both sides.
Only actual hardware issue that easy to pick at is tegra 2s awful codec playback.
( Most people blame honeycomb for the lag, google blames tegra2)
Eventually most tablets will be thinner and or lighter. But as of today no tablet has better hw than galaxy tab. Its not even a discussion.
If the tab and the ipad2 were *both* running web os or windows 8 you'd be a fool to pick up an ipad.
Performance of Honeycomb is obviously annoying many. Google's non chalant attitude of blaming hardware and not addressing ux issues is troublesome. The lack of apps bothers most people at some point. Choppy video and laggy browser typing remain unfixed on the tab.
So again say what you want about honeycomb....but the hardware is best in class.
Performance dropped a lot with 3.1 + TouchWiz compared with 3.0.1.
I've also noticed that the quality of font rendering on system components (like the url textbox on the browser) is worse with 3.1 + TouchWiz.
TouchWiz brings a bunch of system changes and I suspect it's responsible for many of the lag/quality issues.
that's why people made adw.launcher and launcherpro.
touchwizz is just a one time shot to fool people that samsung has awesome support.
in reality, 90% of all customers prefer plain android. touchwiz should be an optional app, not a replacement.
better they improve their update politics, would be much more usefull. but instead they delay everything just for tochwizz - and it still fails
I'm assuming you mean 10.1 v ?
Design: I would rate it a 10, maybe 10.1 , considering how fast Samsung reacted to the ipad2.
Features: probably a 6 or 7, no micro sd and only ok-ish cameras.
Performance: 7. For the most part performance is great, but in any view that's not the normal landscape, you can see that the UI and browsers arn't quite as smooth. That's a big negative for me because I like holding it like a book sometimes.

Artist Upgrading iPad1 - Nexus 10 or iPad4?

Ok I tried to cram the relevent information into the title, so people with the right advice might be able to help me out!
I am curently on an original iPad, that i have had for a couple years now. Now that xmas is coming up, I have been considering finally getting an upgrade, as this seems an oppurtune time!!
I mainly use my ipad for two things, reading on the kindle app, and drawing picture using a vector graphics program called iDraw (though I also have used sketchbook pro and artrage, etc, but lately vector graphics have been better for me).
I rarely (if ever) play games on the tablet (I have a wide array of consoles for gaming), and I watch movies on my laptop most of the time, although being able to output hi-def movies onto the big-screen tv would be handy on occasion.
I have looked into an android app called "infinite design" which seems to be exactly what I would need as far as drawing goes, so that fills the "artistry" niche for the time being. And it seems I can ignore the kindle apps (which I know both tablets have access to).
So I am stuck deciding between these two rather nice tablets. My personal pro's and con's being:
-iPad build quality and reliablity has already been proven, the nexus ... I've heard some faults like light leakage, which would be an absolute deal breaker considering what I use it for. Are the nexus faults an exception more than the rule?
-Android has much more interesting things to play with. I especially liked the idea of the "floating" apps, like LilypadHD and the app that allows a video to run in the foreground while you are using the webbrowser or similar ("Stick it!"? i think it was called). However, can the nexus 10 run these floating apps alongside other programs without causing lag issues and crashing?
-which reminds me that I also heard of some software crashes/freezes/reboots on nexus10s, although I have had a few of those on the iPad as well so this isnt a dealbreaker, as long as it gets fixed with firmware...
So yeh, any help or advice would be good guys just to let you know, I jailbroke the iPad as soon as I bought it before, and will likely jailbreak the new one if I get it, so this could be taken into consideration. Although if necessary I could also root the nexus, if there is an advantage to it. I have a galaxy s2 phone, but I never saw the need to root it (i did jailbreak my old iphone though).
ps. another thought, any advantage to having both an android phone and tablet? eg. connectivity etc? just occured to me it might help swing the decision, who knows!
Thanks anyway, to anyone who actually read all this
In regards to the art usage: the iPad 4's screen has better color reproduction (95% sRGB color gamut and 65% Adobe RGB gamut according to Anandtech).
Also as far as I know the Note 10.1's digitiser supports pressure sensitivity, which might be a bonus for you, so that might be worthy of consideration as well. However there is a stylus for the iPad which 'enables' pressure sensitivity by sending pressure data to specially optimised apps (Sketchbook included) through bluetooth, though I'm not sure how accurate that is.
Edit: The stylus is the Jot Touch.
okay like already mentioned:
i think the best for you would be the note 10.1, it has exactly the things which you need it to do. The stylus is perfect for artists as the feeling is almost like a real pen/brush etc.. btw it has wacom technology included (with the stylus) if u know what that is, then u know how superior that is to stylis mimicing pens on the ipad and other devices.
Yeh, I considered the note. Problem was, it didn't really wow me. Ignoring the whole touchwiz and other Samsung bloat ware id have to remove somehow, it's the same price as a nexus 10 but with less power and a worse screen.
The only advantage is the pressure sensitivity, but as I mostly work using vectors I don't really need this. I currently use a box wave stylus on my iPad, and will use similar in future I'm sure.
It seems the note will become obsolete quicker than the nexus, if only because I expect the nexus will continue getting support for longer. I might be wrong. Is a note 10.1-2 coming out?
I wasn't aware the ipad4 screen gave the best colour accuracy, that's pretty important to know thanks. Lots to think about

simple and straight forward advise, NOTE 10.1! dont even think of getting iPad 4 or Nexus 10! because NO, NO tablet on the Market can compete Note 10.1 in terms of sensitivity of S Pen!
(and btw, i own note 10.1 and Nexus 10)

iPad3 and 4 use a Samsung display so no need to hype it. The Samsung Nexus 10 display is the same quality or better and higher resolution.

Don't underestimate the Note 10.1. It's powerful and while the screen is lower resolution I prefer the colors, black level, white, uniformity, etc. over the Nexus 10. I own both.
Of the the three you mentioned, it's no contest.
#1 Galaxy Note 10.1
#2 Nexus 10
They have 2GB DRAM to run more capable paint programs such as TVPaint. Check out the full beta demo.
iPad4 is not even a consideration with only 1GB where you're limited to toyish Paper like apps and no proper Wacom digitizer pen.

The Note 10.1 on stock JB is plenty fast. It's the only tablet on the market with an inductive (vs. capacitive) display which is crucial to drawing. It's got a Wacom digitizer with 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity and palm rejection. It also has an optional drawing pen with an eraser built in to it. The display on the Note is quite good in terms of brightness, contrast and color reproduction. The only thing lacking is PPI. Two advantages of the lower-res display are app compatibility (do you know the drawing programs you want to use even work on the N10?) and far better battery life. And some of that "bloatware" is quite useful like multiview, S-Note, AllShare Play and Cast, and Color Picker which lets you pick a pen color from a photo and Pen Chooser which lets you toggle between different pens you've set without opening settings each time. You're the first person I've seen who needs a pen to dis the Note. For someone who could care less about the pen and the Note's additional features the N10 is a better value.
There are tons of artists using the Note. Here's a thread you might find interesting.

Ok in hindsight, I may have been quick to write-off the note10, at the time of posting I was on a break at work and rather tired haha. One of the reasons I was thinking of avoiding the note was its age... I thought it had been released long enough ago that it would be soon due an update. However, I just checked... and it only came out mid-august... so I think I must have been thinking of the note phones.
Even though I currently do not use pressure sensitivity at all... this doesn't mean it wouldnt be a good idea for me to start incorporating it, I dont want to get stuck in my ways or anything!!
In which case, does the note10 have the power and ability to multi-task floating apps (chat and/or videos) while running drawing programs? If so... I may have to look into places that are doing deals on the note. As of my last look, it was selling for the same price as the nexus10, which is why I thought the nexus was the better "bang for the buck"...
The reason I'm looking at new powerful devices is because I want this to be future-proofed against anything I might need it for for the next couple of years (the same amount of time my trusty ipad1 lasted me). I figured I was safe with the nexus, because of the custom ROMS that would be made for it, with it being the main tablet release of the season.
edit: turns out that, while both the basic Note and the basic Nexus are retailing at £319, I am possibly able to get the note for £279... which means a decent case and any cable accessories are essentially "free"... Which is a big plus.
I need to find some information on the quality of the screen, as it is relatively very low resolution compared to the competition.. barely more than my original iPad1 in fact?
edit 2: unfortunatly, I can only get it in white for that price lol. Shame.
edit 3: hmm... Seems I can also get a white note 10.1 for £253, as long as I also buy a case with it (which I always intended to anyway)... so this seems a bargain as long as they sell a decent case... the white ones must look horrible though, if its the only ones anyone is selling off cheap!!
If you can wait a good half year I'm sure a 2560*1600 Note will come out, hopefully around 12", which would be the perfect buy, but personally I just can't wait to get my hands on the Nexus 10. If drawing is important, go for the Note, there's no real alternative.

This is true, though money is also a factor, and I have now found a "grey" (least its not bright white, though I may have to check it out in store sometime) note 10.1 for £268. Which isn't bad.
Its just whether I would rather spend £50 more, and get nexus. A screen thats got twice the resolution, and a significantly faster processor, would mean being safely future proofed. I'll have to decide just how much the pressure-sensitivity is worth to me..
As someone else mentioning in above, if drawing with pen is important factor for you, I believe neither Nexus 10 or iPad 4 may be the best answer. I am not familiar with drawing but Vector drawing may not require high accuracy/pen-paper feeling, if so I believe Nexus 10 or iPad 4 be great as they have phenomenal screen resolution to display your art.
Otherwise, two options:
1. Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
It has inductive pen technology i.e. you can get the feeling of pen and paper. Downside is screen resolution. Though coming from original iPad, you will unlikely to notice the screen resolution difference. So it may be ok. Otherwise, very stable and speedy device.
2. Samsung Ativ Smart PC
This is Windows 8 Atom processor based tablet. It comes with Wacom stylus, runs real windows 8 i.e. you should be able to run most of windows native software, and if you like you can buy optional keyboard to make it to like real laptop. The downside with this is price - expensive even considering 64GB internal storage. Windows 8 is great for legacy program, but tablet wise still lacking application. Screen resolution is essentially same as Galaxy Note 10.1 i.e. not the level of Nexus 10 or iPad 4.

Thanks for the idea, but the Ativ is way too expensive, pretty much 3x the cost of the Note. I am but a poor boy, from a poor family... (insert head banging music here)...
I use vectors because it makes it easier to resize and edit work afterwords (compared to bitmap images). The reason the pen doesnt matter for the iPad, is because you can use a "Pen" tool, essentially dragging and dropping and editing lines, without directly drawing them. This is accurate, though a little time consuming, though because of the constant zooming in-and-out that you need to do for fine detail work it works out for the best.
Having the S-Pen is not a selling point to me exactly... but if it works well, and I learn to use it, it can only improve my overall work... and that would make it worth the money in itself.
One issue with capacitive screens was the accuracy, as even stylus' need to be around fingertip-size in order to register. If the S-Pen is much more "pointy" (i will need to investigate this) then it would immediately be helpful... much less zooming in and out to get accurate lines...

3x price is Ativ Smart Pro. I am talking about Ativ PC, which is Atom processor not i5. It is 649 without keyboard dock. Cons against Pro is inferior CPU/GPU, no Full HD screen, 2GB memory instead of 4GB. However, it has its benefit which are long battery life, relatively light weight.
But if you don't need Spen/Wacom, I think you can't go wrong with either Nexus 10 or iPad 4. It's really depends on what ecosystem you like. If you really have very specific task/goal you like to achieve, and it already works well on iOS platform, I say stick with it as it saves you money if you already own apps for it.
Personally, I needed more flexibility than iOS so went to Android. Now I saw even more flexibility option available i.e. real windows, so I jumped on it.

Well £649 is still more than double the Note10.1 price (I can get it for £268 at the moment), and I already have a very nice laptop for the high-end stuff
I bought the iPAd back when I had an iphone3GS. Now though, I have a GalaxyS2... so it almost seems fitting to try out an android tablet. And the multi-windows support and dual-view on the Note looks much more interesting than the same-old iOS stuff that I'm already used to. Even jailbroken, theres only so much you can do with an iPad (I should know, ive done it already!)
As long as the android tablets arent inherantly broken in some way (I keep hearing about issues with light leakages and stuff on the nexus, but might just be from a bad batch), I am more tempted by the android side of things. There might be less apps at the moment, but it will catch up soon enough, and the ability to play around with widgets etc makes it seem more interesting as a day-to-day tool.
True, I will be losing out on... maybe £20-£30 of apps from the apple store. But some of those were bought months ago, and in the scheme of things its not much of a big deal. If I ever go back to an iPad 5 or 6 in the future, they will still be there for me (I assume).
edit: didnt finish my point. If the androids are both well built ect, it seems I will go for one of them. And because of the price, the multi-view, and the potential benefit of the SPen, the Note is currently edging ahead slightly.

Well sounds like your mind is set to Android ecosystem, which is great. I personally love it. Multiwindow support of Galaxy Note 10.1 is great concept but just to warn you. It is not true multitasking i.e. if you think about doing your Vector thing, or even play game and browse, that won't work. Simply because Multitasking on Note 10.1 is limited to selected applications which are browser, S-note, Video, email etc. But not every apps. But considering hardware limitation and 10.1 inch screen, I think it's reasonable to have selected app to be supported. Personally, the biggest sales point of Note 10.1 was its stability, speed, and S-pen.
If you need true multitasking, you need Windows Tablet, but if you are from iPad I am certain it is not your top priority. By the way, I don't know Euro. But Ativ Smart PC 64GB sells $649 here in US and Galaxy Note 10.1 32GB sells for $499 thus total price difference is US$150. Again whether the cost difference is worth or not depends on your use.

As I'm sure you are aware, we weren't talking about who manufactured the displays, but rather about their quality. If you take your time to watch or read any review which compares the iPad 4's display to the N10's one, you will see that the iPad's color reproduction is visibly better. Now also while RAM might matter in the comparison of Android devices, the iPad runs a quite different OS and I'm pretty sure the 'only' 1GB RAM wouldn't be a bottleneck for these apps; it would probably be memory bandwidth and CPU power.
This said I have just placed my order on a Nexus 10 and I strongly prefer Android to iOS, yet I have to admit that the iPad has it's strengths as well (I've actually been considering getting an iPad 4 instead of the N10 because of the superior app selection, but as I love my SGS3 and Android itself I've decided to get the N10 and just hope that more tablet apps will start to appear for Android).

The cheapest I can find in the UK (on google anyway), ignoring eBay, is over £600. Not sure why this would be.
There is a thread on the Note forum where someone has made it possible to add the multi-window support to a lot of other apps by altering their .apk, in a fairly easy process. Probably wont work with every app, but still. Anyway, while I'm drawing the most I would want is a chat app running, and I believe LilypadHD does that as a floating app anyway? (though this works on the Nexus as well, no need for a Note for it.)
I dont plan to be playing games much anyway, if at all.
It seems the note has a fair few nice apps that samsung has put on it, and the pen itself of course. The only reason im still umming and ahhing is the Nexus; sexy high def screen and powerhouse of a processor.
Although if I'm not going to use it to its potential (eg gaming, i guess) then maybe its a waste.

Wow $600 for Ativ Smart PC is definitely a lot... Wonder if the price is raised from retail due to short supply. In any event, Note 10.1 is phenomenal device. Nexus 10 is great device as well and I seriously put a thought onto it before. It is great but at the same time unfortunate that in this era of tablet, there are so many options yet no system is perfect/completely superior to others. Nexus 10 IS unfortunately not my choice (note it is present tense as may change in the future) because of lack of microSD, keyboard dock, and Wacom digitizer. I had to return Note 10.1 only because of lack of screen resolution, which I did not notice if I went straight from iPad 2 to Note 10.1. But I had Infinity in between so Full HD resolution was just too hard to give it up.
If you don't play game, the time you will notice the difference in resolution is reading text e.g. kindle, browser etc. The text is just so much more crisp. You just really need to list the features that you want, and the purpose of the tablet you are using for. Because you will unavoidably have to make a comprise to one or two features. In my case with Ativ Smart PC, I am compromising screen resolution, and some tablet optimized application availability. I'm looking forward to Surface Pro, but even with it I am compromising battery life, and weight.... Good luck on your search.
Note 10.1 please don't east your time with the others they don't have a digitizer surface for wacom pressure sensative pens.
And the Res does not matter because you will zoom in and out. I own a wacom tablet and it nothing like my nexus 10 for sketching.
The only pen option you have for I pad and nexus is the go smart stylus has a spring ed tip

Hello guys,
I have a nexus 10 and like it, but for painting/drawing, imo it is crap compared to an ipad.
Try signing your name as quickly as you normally would. You will hardly be able to recognise your handwriting. The nexus 10 samples the stylus position way too infrequently, and the "tweening" that takes place, drastically smooths out the direction of your stylus strokes.
Ive tried Sketchpad, Infinite Paint, Gnotes, other painting tools, and they all suffer the same problem.
My SGS3 is a LOT better as is my wife's i****e 4s.
David Hockey created huge wall murals for his amazing exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art this year. They were done on an ipad... so at the moment, I would say iPad is superior for painting. Nexus 10 is crap and I have no experience of the tweening problem on the Note 10.1.
Mark.

Anyone else bummed out? (UPDATE: Not bummed out anymore!)

So I got the Nexus 10 (sold iPad 3 to get it) and I am impressed with it. The screen is amazing, I have good battery life, and excellent performance.
However, streaming Netflix is not as crisp, the lack of tablet optimized apps is annoying, and reading is kind of awkward. I don't like landscape reading and portrait mode is too tall.
It seems like the huge resolution is ahead of it's time and I am sure it's just a matter of waiting for apps to catch up.
These are a few things that have been bothering me lately with this tablet.
Anyone else have these thoughts or know how to get passed the early adoption period? I am debating whether or not to sell it and get the Nexus 7. Seems like a reasonable (more universal) screen resolution with plenty of power. Also, seems like a good size for reading and web surfing.
Thanks.
UPDATE: Thanks for all of the feedback.
After writing this post, I found some awesome review videos from YouTuber "oode". After watching those, I spent some time tweaking and getting my n10 set up. It helped me realize what a rad tablet we have in the n10.
I still have a few annoyances to figure out with movies (best player to use and rip settings), HD Netflix streaming, and better battery life tips. I am sure more Googling and XDA searching will help answer these.
Before you sell it and get a Nexus 7, see if anyone you know has one and try it out. It would suck for you to sell the 10, get a 7 and find out you regret it. This is my second 10 inch tab, and at first it can see overwhelming, especially with the 10's resolution, but just keep playing with it. It will grow on you. Before long you will have no issues reading in portrait mode. For me its like reading a hard cover book without the weight and thickness. I hope you grow to like, and as for apps, I dealt with that with my last tablet.....not to many tablet optimized apps, and now I am seeing it again. Not a deal breaker for me. I would rather have apps playing catch up then my tablet be out dated in a month. Just my opinions.
Don't get a Nexus 7. The screen isn't very good and screen lift.
I just got mine today and well i can say i am really impressed with it , and i love it. I know there are not many apps optimized for the tab but yeah its not that bad for me. Also My netflix streaming is awesome, whats happening to yours ?
If you feel the screen is too big try using a 15 inch laptop for a while which will put the Nexus 10 inch screen with it's higher screen resolution in/to perspecive.
I have not touched my laptop since getting the Nexus 10 which was not the case with my Galaxy tab 7.7 inch screen which I have sold.
I find, just like my laptop, that I don't need any apps for using the Web and there are plenty of stand alone apps for navigation, music, office, games etc.
I hold the Nexus 10 in landscape like a laptop for viewing videos and web sites with a lot of full width detail so that I don't need to zoom, otherwise I use portrait.
Think twice before selling the Nexus 10 for it is the only tablet which gives a high definition Netbook performance in an even more portable format.
Try the Ocean browser too for it makes Web browsing on the Nexus 10 very fast and it supports Flash too.
I feel the same way OP. I had a nexus 7 and I loved it. Netflix and video media on the nexus 10 is a turn down. The screen is amazing but I sold my nexus 7 for a better media viewing experiece. The watching of media or movies isn't good at all on the Nexus 10.
I'm also debating of keeping or returning.

I don't see the problem with Netflix. Seriously. Plays fine and looks as good as it can considering Netflix streams at 720p at best.
Don't see the issue with any other media either. There are issues with codecs but that's a problem with the Nexus7 as well, just comes with the AOSP territory.

Same here i cant find the problem with netflix, mine looks great. As good as it gets i can say.
Netflix video and audio don't match on my tablet. Also, Frames skips after a while.
Is my tablet defective??
Can you guys try a few movies and let me know.
Thanks.

I feel the same way OP. I'm on my second one after returning the first for light bleed, go figure this ones worse. I like the size it just doesn't have the performance I was expecting. Yeah its got a huge rez, but my N4 feels 10x more fluid than the N10. Even just basic stuff like swiping to another screen feels better on the N4. IMO the android experience is just a lot better on the N4, which I find myself using even when I have the N10 sitting next to me.

I did a factory restore a few hours ago wanting to return the Nexus, I reinstalled Netflix right now and it is running good. That's strange. I'm also not getting any WiFi drops like I was getting before. I'm going to keep an eye on this.

Did you get tired typing so much information about your conclusion? And you must be very well placed in the tech community to pass judgement on a device that SOLD, not shipped, sold, one million units last month alone. Screen lift? Seriously? that is so last month's news.
But thanks for your 8 word review of the N7.
Apples to Apples the N10 is the better hardware platform. No question. It has both a front and rear facing camera. Has a display that might rival the retina display on the iPad, etc.
Get the N7 if you want a tab that will fit in a jacket or back pocket, can be held in one hand and can be bought for under $300. It really comes down to size, and your intended use. The N7 is not for bragging rights. It's for having a pure Google device in the same price you can get a Kindle or Nook for.
I'm here to read about how the new 10's see what problems they might be having, etc. But I am VERY happy with my N7 and take it everywhere with me. When I get the N10 I'll be keeping the N7.
Im not bummed out, this tab is 100x better than the ipad

Well, my own anecdotal Nexus 7 experience is that I account for FIVE of the devices. 4 16gb units and 1 32gb. Every single one of them had a major defect, including my current 32gb.
First one had a bad USB connector as well as major light bleed, but never had time to develop the screen lift issue because it was on the way back to Asus in a matter of hours.
Second one had astoundingly bad light bleed in 8 places, once again sent back before the screen had time to lift.
Third one had modest light bleed, but creaked, and within a week the screen lifted an epic amount. I was worried I might slice my hand.
The fourth also had bad light bleed, came shipped with a broken tab on the back cover so there was always a gap on the left side, and (wait for it) the screen was doing an epic lift. Still waiting on its replacement to come back from Asus.
And my final and current model is an October production 32gb that seemed pretty good at first, almost no light bleed and the least washed-out looking display of the bunch. And within two days the screen was lifting.
Now, I only purchased 2, my first 16gb and my current 32gb, both at retail stores. I should also note that it cost me $80 so far in RMA shipping.
I like the form factor for some things, mostly books and surfing on the throne. I'm satisfied with the performance, and not unhappy with the purchase price. It does what it does pretty well. But it's built like a 80's Hyundai.
Love the N10, playing full encoded BD 720p movies with no problems. Haven't tested the 1080p BD encodes yet.
Netflix runs great, Slingplayer runs good.
My N7 goes everywhere with me. It has no issues and was a first run batch.. light bleed? who knows, i dont put mine in a pure black enviorment with max brightness just to find a problem. IMO once it's reported a few times, some poeple go out of thier way to find fault.
I agree the N10 gonna take some time to get used to to read on. But playing games on is fun....
Both great products and excellant build IMO

It either increases performance or causes stuff to break (well, I guess it could also do both ). It's worth checking out if you haven't though.
As for being bummed out; meh, I sold my Nexus 7 for a Nexus 10 because of the specs. A15 ARM processor, Mali-T604 GPU, 2560x1600 resolution, that just destroyed the Nexus 7's specs. It seems the Nexus 10 can run hot enough after a long enough period of load to throttle the CPU frequency lower, which is a slight concern. Nexus 4 also does this, but I'm not entirely sure if such a thing occurs on the Nexus 7 or not.
My main interest in getting a Nexus 10 was gaming. However, when playing DEAD TRIGGER and SHADOWGUN: DeadZone, I feel that the N10's size is a bit... too much. Getting a controller should easily solve this little problem though
But in any case, the Nexus 10 also has HDMI-out, rear-facing camera, 5GHz WiFi support, LED light notification, better front-facing camera, and front-facing speakers. Nexus 7 doesn't have any of that (unless something changed with the newer models).
No issues with Netflix for newer videos, older stuff doesn't look great on anything. Videos I'm streaming from PC look awesome and I just use a Nook touch for my reading, need eink for that. Yea some apps don't look as great as they could, but nothing as bad as an iPhone app on the iPad.
I think a lot of my thoughts and feelings stem from just coming from an iPad with thousands of tablet optimized apps, down to less than 100 on the n10. When it comes down to it, I use my tablet primarily for reading, web browsing, videos (YouTube, Netflix and Movies), taking notes, and very light gaming. I don't use that many apps on my tablet. However, I have a lot of apps on my gNexus since it has an internet connection 24/7. The only reason I use my laptop is when I want to do some real PC gaming.
Thanks for all of the feedback!

Oode's reviews are the main reason why I bought my Nexus 10! After seeing his enthusiasm for the tablet I was sold. Google need to cut that dude a cheque.

Complaints/Praises so far?

I've had my phone for two days so far. After spending six months on a Galaxy S6 parts of me are very happy to be home with the Nexus line again.. mainly pure Android and the development sure to come. However, I've noticed two things so far with which I'm not terribly happy.
First, those bezels. Christ, there has to be damn near 1 1/2 inches of bezel on this phone. I thought phones were moving towards a smaller and smaller bezel these days. Apparently Google and Huawei didn't get the memo.
Second, no matter how much they tried to sell it, the camera is just not anywhere near the level of (at least) Samsung's. This camera doesn't even belong in the same sentence as the word Samsung. It doesn't have the ability to snap a clear shot of anything moving, even of my small dog walking. Any motion equals blurry pics. The camera is actually why I tried the S6. It's also why I loved it. Of course, I hated just about everything else on the S6 (even the international unlocked version I bought).
I guess we'll see whether the camera, which is the most important part of the phone for me (kids, animals) ends up being bad enough to seek another phone with a better one.
Your thoughts after using it for a few days?
Don't have mine yet. (Thanks huawei) but hopefully some Google updates can make this a better experience for you. I know the nexus 5 had some updates that improved the camera a bit.

Is this problem with moving subjects with hdr on?
Because if I'm not mistaken, Google camera has some cool but heavy post processing on photos taken with hdr+ and even the capture itself seems a bit slow at times.
This on my Nexus 5 and from what I've seen in videos it's the same pretty much with the 6p. It gives awesome results once you learn how to use it, I've taken some epic shots with my N5 and the camera is crappy.
Just don't use it for moving scenes.
I ended up writing too much xD
So, is this issue with regular hrd off shots also?
Yeah, definitely check HDR is off for motion. That and lots of light. Even with the bigger pixel size, these camera sensors are tiny and have no chance with motion in low light.
I'm actually curious about more opinions on this. I just listed my Note 5 because I had a Nexus 5 before and I want to go back to Nexus with the 6P. The camera doesn't matter that much to me because I use a DSLR for any pictures I actually care about. I'm sure it's still a massive improvement over the Nexus 5 camera I had for years, hah.
I had the s6 and note 5. I will agree that the note 5 is the better of the two, however it's not miles ahead of the 6p. If I graded them on a scale 1 to 100, the note 5 would be 95 and the nexus 6p would be an 90
Got one today. My impression is by far best nexus phone. Only thing i wish thr power button was more stiff its too light.

That's kind of how I feel. The Note 5 is very likely the best phone on the market right now, but it's still not a Nexus. And while I like the Exynos hardware, you're stuck with the lack of software. I feel like the screen is by far the best part of the Note though, so I was quite surprised to hear the same screen on the 6P or else I might have waited in the first place.
I'm in love with mine. Just arrived today. Screen is beautiful. Signal/radio is far superior to Samsung....even better than my Busted G3, and I haven't had service this good since I used HTC. Size is bigger than I would have liked. But I knew it was big going in. G3 was about my limit...and this is a tad larger. I'll get used to it. Love the bigger screen but it's just a tad to big for one hand all the time. Fingerprint sensor is flawless for me. Camera seems fine so far for me, but my complaint is the higher resolution photos are only 4:3, not 16:9. Battery life will take a few days to test. I thought I might have to root and rom because I hate the menu set up on my Nexus 7 (2013) but this is ok for me. No complaints.
BTW to the OP...the top and bottom bezels are for the speakers. No bottom speaker, than I would bet smaller bezel.
The Note 5 certainly does have the best hardware. As for the best phone that is subjective. The nexus P is certainly a great contender and at it's price point it is a superior device. No, it isn't the "best" in every category. Neither is the Note 5 or any device for that matter. All depends on what you're looking for. If you don't care about updates, development and the issues that plague samsung phones (memory management for one) then by all means get one. It is a solid device. One of the best out there.
What kept me from buying Samsung is development sucks for them, they lock down devices on the two best carriers in the USA and I'm tired of the Touchwiz bloat. Oh and its almost twice the price. If those were not true I'd gladly give Samsung my money again.
The Nexus P is a very well built device with a display that is very close to the Note 5, a very good camera, great battery life, excellent performance and you are guaranteed to have excellent development here and updates from Google.
Pick which one is more important to you.
I'm the same as the OP in the sense I came to the 6p after 6 frustrating months with the s6.
The screen, camera size and design of the s6 is pretty amazing. Excellent in all regards. But the software... Awful. Multitasking was impossible and touchwiz just annoyed me.
The 6p software is pure and fast. Excellent.
But I agree the camera and screen aren't in the same league as the s6 really.

exactly, the note5 is a great phone however if you want stock, are sick of waiting for updates, AND are stuck with one that can't be rooted depending on your carrier you'll move to the 6p like i did.
If you guys got a good pair of headphones then you'll notice the quality of the stock tuning is amazing. Wow in impressed from stock. Not bad google not bad

Also coming from an S6..
The S6 screen, form factor and stock e-mail app (Exchange still sucks on Gmail) are the only things I'll miss (Maybe the Camera but I really haven't used the 6P Camera much to make that judgement).
The positives though outweigh the negatives.. much stronger latch on to wifi and mobile signal compared to the S6. Places where I would drop out of wifi completly on the s6 still give me 3-4 bars on the 6p. Software.. so much smoother than touchwiz (I'd forgotten how buttery stock android really is). Everything about the device feels faster as a result of the software even though specs wise the S6 out-guns the 6p. Battery life is awesome compared to the S6 - no more mid-day charge required.
I still dream of another Samsung Nexus...
The only bother I have is the screen has a rainbow reflection and I can't read it in my car or in the sun
The only thing that's bugging the hell out of me is the bezels but that's just because the Nexus 6 bezels were so small other than that I'm loving it

Praises:
Faster/smoother experience vs. my S6
Screen is nearly identical to S6
Stereo speakers are great
Complaints:
Headphone volume seems extra low

I was also vary impressed of the sound quality from just out of the box. I’ve all was prefer stock android but one of the main reasons that I root my phones was to use Viper but now I have been thinking that I’ll won't have to.
BTW:
Headphone - Bose
Bluetooth Earbuds - JayBird X
Only complaint so far is the volume and power buttons being in the middle. the first thing I did was unlock decrypt and root . Plugging in and unplugging the cable I would always hit the power button which sucked when I was in bootloader mode and I plug my cable in and damn the phone is booting because my hand touched the power button. other than that this phone is ace . I need my other cases to come in. I had two verus cases but they weren't cut right so I sending them back for a return.
I'm coming from a oneplus one so I'm sure the camera will be better when mine arrives lol
I`m using this as my work phone, probably the best built Android Device I have ever used. I mainly use iOS devices, but this Nexus 6p is maybe the first Android device I could see my self using as a daily driver assuming I did not use iOS for personal use. Great Device, I had the LG G4 and the S6 edge earlier this yr and enjoy the build quality on this far more, but I will say the s6 has the best phone I used all year on a phone in comparison to the g4, 6p and the 6s+ I use as a personal phone.

Has anyone here owned an iPad Pro? How does the Tab S3 really compare?

I think as far as hardware is concerned, the Tab S3 is fairly decent but when it comes to Android, I'm not so sure.
Speaking honestly and realistically, is the Tab S3 an equally good professional (well-rounded) tablet as an iPad Pro or is the Apple product a more polished solution? (Because lets face it, Apple has dominated the tablet market and continues to make improvements in that space to point where I personally feel that their products offer a very polished user experience, to the point of possibly being good enough to replace a notebook)
I had the 9.7 iPad pro for a while. The main thing I didn't like was that there was no resistance between the pencil and the screen. It was just too slippery to feel "right" as a note taker, which is one of my primary uses of a tablet. The S-Pen feels better with the rubber tip giving a little drag. I also didn't like the lack of a file manager, but that looks to be coming in iOS 11. I don't have the keyboard case for my S3 yet, so I can't comment on that. As always, there are a couple apps I can't get on Android, but others I can now that I'm on Android. I like the physical feel of the S3 better, but that's very subjective. I haven't done much with using Flow with my phone yet, that seems interesting also.
Thank for that feedback.
I'm still in two minds about whether I should spring for a Tab S3 or go for the iPad Pro 9.7 which is the same price.
Yes, I'm also interested in Samsung Flow. Specifically how well it works and whether it works with non-Samsung phones.

I have an Ipad Pro 9.7 and 10.5 and love them. Decided to get the Galaxy Tab S3 just to play with it at work and see how it compares to the iPad. Let's just say it feels like coming from a Ferrari and getting into a Yugo (no offense to Yugo lovers, i'm sure it gets great gas mileage). The galaxy Tab feels sooo slowww compared to the Apple Tablets. If you're looking for speed and ease of use i'd say get the Ipad. I doubt you'll be disappointed. The Galaxy feels so slow switching profiles and starting apps that i don't even use it beside for some gaming since I can play my many clash camps on one tablet ... Now ipad Pro 10.5, there's the winner here for screen responsiveness... but price still too high... but it's the best notebook replacement... no lag whatsoever... a speed daemon...
It can be very difficult to compare two tabs of different OS. At the end of the day, it is a question whether what you are more comfortable with? If you don't mind a closed ecosystem, then iOS would be suitable, but if you like more customization and want an open ecosystem, then Android would be the one.
Also, you have quite a few sites online elaborating the Tab S3 vs iPad Pro thing.

The battery life might not be as good, and the speed isn't as fast as the iPad pro, but I also couldn't justify spending $649 for the tablet, $100 for the pen and another $150 for the keyboard. I got my Tab s3 for $449 and got the keyboard case for $65. The battery life gets me through the day. The most screen on time I've gotten is 9 hours, which is good enough for me. It might be slower than the iPad pro, but it's not a snail.

Workflow dependent. Both are good, neither is a laptop replacement.
I haven't noticed a major difference in speed, Samsung screen is nicer. I also prefer the Samsung keyboard. IOS is improving at a great clip.
I had the og iPad Pro 9.7 and sold it within a week. Probably better hardware but I didn't like iOS or the rechargeable pen at all.
The BIGGEST issue for me: the wat the iPad Pro handles split screen. The S3 splits left/right in horizontal and top/bottom in portrait. The iPad also splits left/right when held horizontal but if holding it portrait, it also splits the screen left/right - which is pretty much useless. I could go for either of these tablets if I only needed to multitask when holding the tablet horizontally, but if I ever wated to multitask holding the tablet upright, the S3 is the only way to go.
Not sure why Apple hasn't fixed this. When I prepare for a class, I can hold the tablet horizontally (read on one side, write on the other) or upright (read on top, write on bottom). The Apple left/right split when holding it upright requires scrolling to continue to write (I use typical 8.5x11 dimensions in the event I want to print my hand written notes.
Also prefer a pen that doesn't cost $100 extra that has to be charged from the bottom of the iPad (risking snapping it off if I mishandle it).
If Apple would fix at least the way they split screen, I would consider buying one and overlook the pen issue.
I eventually bought both the iPad 10.5 and the S3 but ended up using the S3 more frequently. The 120Hz True tone display on the iPad is great but the AMOLED display on the S3 is still an absolute pleasure to use with vibrant and crisp image quality. They each have their strengths but you can't really go wrong with the S3.
The 4 speaker setup on the S3 sounds very good and I like that the surround audio is adjusted depending on the orientation of the tablet but the audio quality isn't quite as good as the iPad Pro 10.5 which has a slightly deeper sound with better bass.
I like that I can make calls and send SMS's as well as use WhatsApp on the S3. You can't do that with an iPad!
And the pen is great! I'm not an artist but just navigating the interface with the pen is a good experience as is the fact that the pen doesn't need to be charged like the Apple pencil.
Performance is decent as well. I haven't experienced any major lag and everything that I do with the tablet is fast and fluid, though I do run maintenance cleanups and reboot once in a while and I don't install a lot of unnecessary apps.
I get about a 1-2 days of battery life with around 9h SOT depending on how much I use the tablet and what I'm using it for. Obviously media and gaming consumes more battery while web surfing, email and document editing is fairly light on battery.
