[Q] Clockwm isnt backing up ics - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i just rerooted my thunderbolt and flashed cwm. The cwm verion is v4.0.4.1
and i read a post about cwm not backing up ics because i guess there are more than 10k files. But i didnt understand how they tried fixing it. Is there an easy way? i have ics and am not sure what is happening. the device hangs at backing up system and the bar is gray with not scrolling indicator. Please help, i want to try the official ics rom debloated and other roms.
Im not sure if i need to update my cwm version.

You need to flash a different recovery. I prefer 4ext personally but twrp is free and up to date as well. There are also issues with CWM not wiping correctly and causing a lot of issues on people's phones.

[TRICK]Rom switching cm7 to cm9 quick + recovery to recovery CM9 bootloop breaker

Hello,
I dont know if it's really silly to post this,
but flashing CM9 and using three key recovery can lay you into recovery to recovery bootloop.
before, I use to flash [EH03] stock rom to overcome the problem.
I just notice a simple way, maybe some might be aware of this.
Here it goes,
First flash the following recovery from odin :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=556634&d=1301538947
and then once you are in recovery then flash a glitch kernel from recovery :-
dowload link :- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488976
This breaks the loop.
I dont know how it works but seriously it worked for me.
if it doesnt then flash ths build, and you are done. this can also be use to switching cm9 roms easily rather then again going to stock.
sageDieu said:
it also works to flash a gingerbread rom (I keep a stable cm7 rom on my card just in case) and you don't even have to wipe data, just flash cm7, boot, recovery, then flash back to ics. that way you can save yourself if you're away from a computer.

Silly? Not at all!! I've been wondering about this issue. So many times I would just say screw it and odin back to EH03 stock and start all over because I couldn't get the right CWM to flash.
Thanks!!!!

Will give it a go if I get looped again.

If you are in a boot loop where recovery does not come up, how do you get to a point to flash?
hello,
you need to flash recovery from odin, so that you can flash a rom. it is mentioned on first post.

HELP! bootloop after Liquid ICS!

Please help!
I installed Liquid's ICS MECHA MR2.6 Beta1x zip file just to test it out but ultimately didn't like it, so I looked to restore my BAMF MECHA ICS 08212012 backup and recieved an error that that the MD5 did not match so I instead tried to reinstall the BAMF MECHA ICS zip but now am in a bootloop and wont go passed the lock screen before it reboots! I am a novice at this and am still learning but I think it may be an issue with the radios matching?
please help me asap!
thank you.

I cleared my cache, dalvik and reset my data before flashes like always and i am using REVOLUTIONARY CWM v4.0.4.4
Try super wipe and then flash.

Definitely ALWAYS make sure that you clear data.
This is why I clear data 3x, just to make sure it all gets out, clear cache, and dalvik of course.
You can clear as much as you want. It's never going to hurt anything.
You should be fine afterwards to then restore your backup.

Good, glad it worked.
I didn't think the Revolution recovery would have a superwipe option.
You should download 4ext or clockworkmod recovery to take place of Revolutionary recovery. They work much better. I personally use clockworkmod recovery, but hear awesome reviews about 4ext.
By all means you can keep using the Revolutionary recovery. Just always be sure to wipe data 3x, cache 1x, and then dalvik 1x when changing between ROMs... and that goes for any recovery you might change to.
Usually clearing the data only once doesn't get all of the old data out. Besides, you can sit and clear any of those options all day and it won't hurt a thing.

I think so I'm going to test it out when jester releases the new build of liquid ICS, I had no idea there was an option in 4ext recovery I thought everyone was using that file, I know that it works for multiple devices not just the galaxy s 2. I will let u know if it worked once I try it out. In 4ext where do u go to find the superwipe option.

Glad u got it working. In the future just do a factory data reset from recovery. It should stop the boot loop. To get to it. Pull the battery out to shut the intended phone off. When powering on, hold down volume down. It will boot into boot loader. From there you can select recovery. Hope this helps for future reference.

I had great battery life with Skyraider 1.3 with the stock settings, definitely better than the stock ROM. It was better with the .9 radios vs the .19 radios - you could try a radio swap.
Did you make any other changes? New apps/sync settings etc?

[Q] Is it ok to use AOSP based Recovery for Non-AOSP Rom?

As the title indicates I am not fond of the clockwork mod recovery and would like to use the teamwin projects which is AOSP based. I want to load up the official deoxed debloated ROM which as far as I know if non-AOSP based. is that going to be a problem? Sorry for the dumb question, first time loading up a new rom only started rooting a couple weeks ago.

Sorry for the late response. That is exactly what I was looking for an alternative to clockworkmod recovery. Thanks a bunch.

Is this the Definition of a soft brick? Fix?

So I rooted my S4 and all was good (Not my first rodeo)
I was running a Stock Deodexed ROM and I flashed a mod to change the toggles to blue. Still... all was good, but
then I decided to start fresh and clean up a bit. So I formated the device, wiped caches, data reset, yadda ya...
Flashed a different Stock Deodex and everything still seemed fine. I tried flashing the blue toggle mod and then got stuck on boot. Pulled battery and still nothing. Wiped all data again and flashed the ROM again without doing the toggle mod. Ever since then, no matter what ROM I'm on or have any mods, if I reboot I get stuck at boot screen. The only way to get past this is to wipe EVERYTHING again and start over. However... Hot/Quick/Shell reboot doesn't lock up on me.
So basically I'm at a point with my S4 that makes it impossible to flash anything and be able to boot. I even have to wipe everything before I can do a successful restore.
I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.2 and currently on my latest backup of cleanrom 1.3
Any ideas are greatly appreciated and welcomed. Thanks community!

From DarkMenace's signature, quite a nice resource he has composed. I ran into a similar situation with TWRP and ClearnRom 1.3 last night, ended up using Odin to push the "SCH-I545_MDK_562219_Stock_Restore.tar.md5.gz" in that link. Went back to bone stock, but it's nice to know there is a fallback incase something ever goes awry.

Yes, but there are root files there also.
So then what? Or do I just use Odin to do the whole kernel flashing thing again to gain root? Sorry to sound so noobish, just don't wanna go through this again. Lol
Should I just maybe try that VRUAMDK no wipe .tar?

You use Odin. You can use either file.
Sent from my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 using XDA Premium HD
Yeah I know I use Odin. I guess I should have worded that better.
If I push the .tar you mentioned, I lose root, but some root files will still be there. So my question is... What files and what can I do with them? Or do I just start the whole root process over again as in the first place with those two modified kernels?
The other "no data wipe .tar" file you push with Odin as well, but would you retain root? If so... I would prefer the no wipe .tar, but you know better than me and I greatly appreciate your help and guidance. If the first .tar file is the better way to go and start all over, that's what I'll do. Its almost done downloading anyways, but was just curious about the no wipe and if ya knew anything more about it. I owe you man!
