[Q] Update EVO 4G LTE Firmware Or Not? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I'm having several issues with my phone and am on the verge of selling it and my OG EVO and getting an S3 or S4.
I stupidly purchased the device during the pre-order period last May (b4 any user reviews were out).
I'm rooted and running a stock ROM by Viper: Stock Rooted 3.15.651.16 Odex
3.15.651.16 710 RD
Android 4.1.1
Kernal 3.4.10-g 014d33e
Hboot 1.12.0000
Unlocked via HTC
S-On
TWRP 2.3.1.0
Baseband 1.02.12.0427
Radio version unknown
TWRP version 2.3.1.0
I don't know what radios (forgot where to find that info).
My issues are:
Random re-booting several times (3 to 6) per day.
Very rarely connect to LTE (and I live in L.A and work downtown).
On the rare occasion that I do connect to LTE, my apps (like maps) report, "This app requires a data connection", and I am un-able to access the Internet (but they work when the 3G icon is displayed).
I have read opinions that we should update our phones firmware to receive the latest improvements. However, xHausx has a post with links to firmware files, but he recommends NOT updating your firmware if your phone is S On (which mine is).
So I'm thinking of trying another ROM b4 giving up. But I'm unsure if there is any advantage (or dis-advantage) for me to update my firmware.
I want to stay mostly stock. I would prefer to keep Google Now. But after almost one year and still unable to use the LTE network here in Los Angeles (rumored to be nearly 50% complete), I'm about done waiting. The 3G network is painful, and I'm in effect paying $85 a month for 450 voice mins and email, but not much else.

You are on really old radios for one thing.
Not sure if that will solve your issue or not. But it's worth a shot. I would s- off the phone and then do the firmware updates.
Your baseband #'s are the radios.

Ah!. Well, tells you how long it's been since I've delved into this.
I assume I can S-Off even though I did the HTC unlock?
And I still have the constant re-booting issue to fix. Factory reset maybe?

You can use FacePalm to S-OFF you will find it in Original Development it takes about 5 minutes or less
Then you can update all your firmware manually using Captain_Throwback's firmware files
Any questions shoot me a PM

Thanks guys. Guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

Leebo,
I did exactly the same with the evo late and am thinking about selling mine too. Where's the best place to sell it? EBay?

I just got the firmware and radios updated this afternoon, so I'll be checking it out fr the next couple of weeks to see if it does any better with Internet and LTE.
As far as where to sell it? That depends on where you are. Ebay is great for most people, but it takes longer because you have an auction to deal with.
Craigslist is ok if you're in a densely populated area. I'll probably use EBay if I do sell it, just because I'm willing to take a little time to get the best price.
But I'm hoping I can fix my issues because I still have 14 months left on my contract, and Sprint doesn't pro-rate until about 6 months into the contract. So I'm probably looking at about $300 to end it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Good luck. My Evo LTE has actually been pretty stable. No LTE though...and I work 1/4 mile from SPRINT HQ.

New Radios

I just wanna talk about how much i love this phone now. I was on the GB radios(which i though were hotsh*t) and on team venom i was having data drops so i decided to take the latest firmware and after i got it:
HOLY FRICKIN S***.
These radios are absolutely amazing.
I'm in Long Island, New York for vacation and the service isnt that great since its an island. (I was satisfied that i managed to hold a 4g connection on the ferry ride over but that was before i upgraded). When i got to the island data was awful. Very spotty 3g and 1xRTT. Since i upgraded to these awesome radios i've had 4g in places i didnt before and it hasnt dropped yet.
Now onto the next part:
Me vs. My Dad(Rez vs GS3):
So before my little upgrade i was having fun bragging to my dad about how his radios werent as good as mine and how i got 4g when he was stuck on 3g.
Now after I just dominate him. Hes getting really mad and is thinking about taking his phone back to the store to get a new one because he thinks its messed up. Where i held a 4g connection for a span of 20 minutes he had it twice for a span of 7 minutes. I just keep telling him that Samsung radios are awful...
I just thought i'd share how satisfied i am with these radios and how great they are. So if your on the fence definitely take radios, if not the firmware
Yeah, it's an island, but it's not a desert island. It's not like all the cell towers are across the Sound.
What about battery performance? Notice any difference?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
I'm not sure about battery life but I'm definitely getting higher speeds. Before I would get around 15 down and 8 up. Now I'm getting around 35 up and 20 down.... Awesome sauce

Hboot = 2.27
Also in love with the new radio and kernel on a personal build of Slimkang based off the new RUU. Loving it and giving me awesome battery life. Before on gingerbread I would have to plug in at the end of a work day. Now I could go overnight without.

i like GB but then again i've always had great battery life.
It would make sense to have better battery life since your getting and holding better signal therefore your phone isn't having to work as hard. But yeah the ****ty radios on Samsung phones is the reason I can't make the switch to a nexus or a gs3. Whenever I compare to my friends nexus or gs3 I have Way better signal. Now if only HTC gets a move on dropping source, this phone will be perfect

I loved my rezound till i got a gs3 lol. They are both great phones but my rezound just collects dust now. I havent noticed a real difference in service between them. The gs3 works in all the same places my rezound does. The only problem I ever had with the rezound radio is that it will say you have good signal when you dont, like have 2 bars of 4g but cant get any data. I dont think you can always go by what the phone tells you I think the bars lie lol. You want great batt life get a gs3 it gets over double what the rezound does. But to each their own I have both phones and they are both great but that being said my rezound is getting ready for ebay lol.

its not lying. the bars have nothing to do with data connection. the bars are for voice and sms
I agree with poison. It took me days to finally decide to take the full ruu. (I'm s-on did it for hboot and radios) AND the main reasons I did was my WiFi tether its download speed was droppin in and out. Along with my 4g for that matter.. I maybe held three bars all day for mms AND calls. And it was useless to even keep my 4g on. But now with the latest sense 4 kernel the radios from the update And viperrez rom. I'm getting excellent battery life, and I havent seen less than full bars or any 4g fluctuations.. finally remember why I bought this phone to begin with now on to kernel source..

The sg3 is a awesome phone. Several friends have them, and I love the screens on them. But I can't live with the Sammy radios. I am on 4g in the middle of of work, and they can barely snag a 3g signal sometimes. Sure my battery may go quicker, but I have no connection issues.

+1! Or 1000! My radio already rocked in Cleveland, but now the battery is lasting longer and it's running MUCH cooler, even when I've had the screen on for an hour! Love it!

[Q] No 4g in full LTE area

I have the Galaxy note 2, which is getting awesome 4g reception. My wife is using the Evo 4g Lte and I can't get it to pick up 4g anywhere. She is currently running Meanrom 6.5 which is an ICS based rom. Any suggestions on what I can try to make this work?
I did check to make sure that I was on CDMA/LTE.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Ok...I am getting ready to jump in and do this. I just want to make sure that I am understanding everything correctly. I am going to stay S-on. So that be said, I believe that I need to do the following:
1)Make a Nandroid Backup
2)Relock Bootloader
3)Install the latest Ruu (RUU_JEWEL_CLICS_40_S_Sprint_WWE-2.13.651.1_Radio_1.12.11.0809_NV_SPCS-2.45_003_r
elease_277028_signed.exe) I believe this is the correct one?
4)Unlock the Bootloader
5)Restore Nandroid
My current Baseband is (1.12.11.0809)
If I am missing anything or if the above file is not correct, please let me know!

You are going to run into problems with this plan, when you take the OTA you will be updated to the latest firmware and baseband which will update the touch panel drivers. When this happens your will only be able to run a rom that is based on the 3.16 software. If you do a nandroid restore to an ics rom your touch screen will not function. You would be better off running one of the 2 s-off procedures: dirty racun or facepalm s-off, and then updating the firmware and radios through Captain Throwbacks update files.

Interesting find, I'm experiencing the same no 4g, I went to Baltimore and had no data connection. I took the ota after rooting and htcdev unlock w/ s-on. Ive never seen the 4g signal ever. I can however use the phone and web simultaneously. But it always says 4g

maybe a hardware/case issue
I have the same exact situation. I have a sgn2 and my wife has the evo 4g lte. We live in San Antonio and have great lte signal on my sgn2. I was looking at some info on the antenna on the evo and found out which contacts were associated with the lte signal. So I adjusted the contact prongs that touch the back casing. Low and behold i started picking up consistent 4g signals on her phone inside our apartment. We tried everything else and no dice. The 4g would pick up and then drop off. The signal reception was just to weak. Doing so even helped boost 3g signal and speed. Hopefully this may help others so give it a try. Just open the back case and gently pry up the small metal prongs that touch the back case. Be careful not to break them. Just move them enough to make good consistent contact. And like everyone else says, I am not responsible if you break your phone. Use at your own risk.

do you think an outerbox would make a difference or not with the slight adjustment?
i just pulled the two on the left up slightly...to make it a little more elevated. i think i will test w/o a case today.
I dont think the case would make a difference. Just make sure the back cover makes good contact with all of the gold prongs.

It would appear lte is getting better all the time in the area where i live. The pricing used on the evo lte is amazing! It would seem that i can pick one up for $150 or less. A 30 day late to the EvoLTE thread, Note2 using troll...now that's something you don't see very often.
Anyways, I happen to like the EvoLTE...I do gotta mention though, since the thread was so thoughtfully bumped...If you are planning on buying a Evo LTE and having it flashed to Boost. Make sure it's on 4.0.? <Android Version(ICS)...and Software Version no higher than 2.13.651.1. Once its on 3.16.651 with JellyBean it's basically impossible to flash without going s-off and utilizing a linux computer to downgrade back to 2.13.651.1.
Actually I meant no disrespect to your community. Sorry should have chose my words better. I am simply trolling woody. Because he has a tendency to troll everyone else. I will remove my statement.

I think there is at least an attempt to give one Android update. If you are lucky you get 2. What I mean is aside from security or "fix" updates you will get an Android level update. For instance the Thunderbolt, shipped with 2.2, got an update to 2.3, was lucky to get one to 4.0. Rezound, shipped with 2.3, got an update to 4.0. Now the DNA, shipped with 4.1, should get a 4.2 update. Doubtful it will get a 4.3 (or 5.0) update, but possible. This is just from my experience and observations.

I think HTC will make 2 updates for the GLOBAL DNA phone and possibly one for Verizon, but Verizon will only officially put out 1 update IMO. They won't sink any more $$ into the DNA. But that doesn't matter since as long as the GLOBAL version exists, Verizon users will get theirs. After Moonshine, how can we not believe our DEV can do anything. The only thing that would hurt this phone is if Beaups leaves the DNA community. I've seen where just one strong dev left the community for my phone and the phone support practically all but dried up. He seems to be the king of the DNA. As long as he supports it, we'll be fine.

Somewhat related question. I recently moonshined and now have all the s-off goodness that comes along with it (still on stock ROM minus bloat). Question is, when Verizon starts pushing the next software update, do I need to worry about my phone trying to accept it? Does the customized hboot preclude us moonshiners from getting the update?

Do you have a custom recovery installed. At the least I believe (and its been a while since I go an update on the phone with a custom recovery) that the recovery will not automatically install it. But I think there should be something you can freeze or remove that would prevent the OTA.
The HTC rep I talked to yesterday claimed thatthe DNA is HTCs favorite device. Even more favored than the One. He also claimed that the DNA, for that reason, will be supported with various updates for years to come....carrier permitting.

He was trying to make you feel better by saying so. From VZ track records, we'll be lucky to see Sense 5 by the end of the year if HTC releases it in the next 3 months.
There's no reason it shouldn't get updated. It's still quite new, and hardware is top notch. Now when? Who frigging knows! Verizon hates it's customers.

It does have the hardware and specs. Take Verizon out of the picture and this phone would already be on sense 5 (maybe not 4.2.2 yet). I think once the HTC One drops on Verizon it won't be long before the DNA gets it. Kinda funny Verizon is the last major carrier to get the HTC One and S4. They gotta get their dirty little fingers in there first, just so beaups, adamoutler and crew tell them to suck it.
Honestly, the ONLY thing I like about Verizon is there data speeds. Other wise I'd never of jumped ship from sprint.

I or my girlfriend have had every major carrier minus Sprint over the last year+ and Verizon was hands down the fastest and most reliable. AT&T's LTE is a joke.

Let's get the facts straight, it was just shy of 2 years from the phone getting introduced that it got ICS (Intro March 2011, ICS Feb 2013). Yes it was after the phone was EOL, but at least they did it.

Yep, that was exactly my point. We might not see a TIMELY update, but I am sure we will see one eventually.
TBH, if one is running the stock ROM, they are so far from stock Android it isn't funny anyways. I actually prefer Sense 4+ to Sense 5, HATE how they took away the animated lockscreen weather.

I'm a born again noon I guess..

Having the damnest time getting the WiFi hotspot going again. I'm running sinner LTE 1.0. Kernal [email protected]#1 SMP preempt. Baseband is 1.13.11.0830
Build number 1.29.709.4 CL 165408 release-keys..
I have tried to get captains 4.3 but I can never get the hboot and recovery to upgrade and stay.. I feel like such a noob.. I should've rooted this phone before sprint got greedy

Nothing, if you are not in an LTE area. Not sure if that is the question being asked.
And...I'm not sure what you mean by the Hboot not staying. The firmware seems to have flashed just fine, since you have the latest radios.

If you want to be technical, he has the firmware from the 3.17 update, not 4.3. But that's another issue in and of itself.

If you're S-off, just run the 4.3 RUU. Afterwards you can install a custom recovery again and flash SuperSU. Then you can flash Captain's ROM or whatever else you'd like so long as it's based on the new layout.

Yeah I've been rooting since my Inspire on at&t. Then the HTC vivid... Then in switched to sprint.. Got a galaxy 2 which was almost as bad as the iPhone 3g from years ago. I finally got the evolte.. I didn't root it soon enough so now I'm paying the price. I'll flash the 4.3 then the recovery and hboot?

I dunno what was different from the bother night but, I finally got hboot and the other baseband to flash, this after hours using a different memory card today.. Just decided to try the card from the other night and the PJ74img file fully flashed this time.. First try.. Just one of those try again until or works I suppose.. To a couple of tries with rumrunner too the the other day when I unlocked rooted. Thanks for yalls help... Trust me when I say I did research before asking for help, installing a nexus 7 second gen as my head unit.. Need phone for WiFi.. But I'll have 5.1 surround sound in my my truck .. Via audio splitter from the HDMI, run digital fiber to the surround sound decoder that has 6 rca out puts that runbto the amps .. Hell yeah! Pluss the HDMI audio extractor has an HDMI out.. So I can run extra screens or a projector to a personal drive in experience
