Force closes in system after updating one file in framework-res - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I have this problem with my friends galaxy ace GT-S5839i:
I need someone to help me here because I don't know what to do
I pulled the file framework-res.apk from system and then changed the extension to zip, and changed an image inside one of the folders.
After that I zipped the pack again (tried several zip options) and changed the extension back to apk
My first question: Is this ok?
I copied the changed file to sdcard and using es explorer moved the file to system/framework. Imediately After answering if I wanted to overwrite the phone freezes and never booted again.
I restored the rom and tried several times with same result
I tought the problem would be trying to overwrite a file that's in use but then I found a tool the decompiled the original apk, changed the image, compiled and signed it and made a flashable zip of it.
It gsve always error in trying to flash this on recovery so I extrated the compiled and signed new framwork apk and moved it to system with es explorer... The difference now is that it didn't froze the phone but started to show fc's everywhere. Rebooted, wipede cash and dalvik, messed up woth permissions... Everything I could think of and the result os always tbe same...
Please can amyone share a light here?
Thanks

Ok
I'm gonna look into it, thanks
Edit: Nothing I found there worked...
The only solution was install a different rom (previously had a stock rooted 2.3.6) v4.1
Changed the framework file from the rom and flashed it...
Its working now but still don't know why the previous actions didn't work
Thanks

If you put it in system app you shouldn't need to install it just reboot your phone

What is the file ur trying to push? Link? Does the firmware match from the ROM ur taking it from and pushing it into? System is set to Read/Write?had to ask, lol

Yea its set as r/w nd the file im tryin to push is like a skin for the mms i downloaded it from the hemes and apps section it somethin called DARK MMS and it came wit a zip fike so i jst downloaded it directly to my phone extracted it nd trted to push it... and im using TRIGGER

Ok guys I tried some from all of these links:

most were already apk's just rename and push, one was zips just unzip and they were already named mms.apk for me push and done.
Only thing was you gotta remember to rename them Mms.apk then replace your original. Don't forget to make a copy of your original. Once you replace the original mms.apk you should not have to install it. Just back out and open mms app and ur golden. First run will prob lag a little reboot phone should fix it. Good luck!

yea i downloaded those apks and also followed the steps to push them and nothing happened.. again what i did was ZIP FILE-MMS APKS- EXTRACT-EXTRACTED FOLDER-MMS APK- COPY- SYSTEM- APP PASTE and once i select paste it takes me to the SD card folder and the mms apk doesnt replace the original one.. instead it gets pasted on the SD card folder so it kinda mskes me mad because i try and i keep tryin and i even rebooted my phone so many times and it doesnt work at all!!!
Hmmm very odd indeed.
What file explorer are u using? Root explorer? That's what I used.
Are you dling and extracting all on phone? Try fresh dl on pc and unzip extract .apk on pc. Move .apk onto phone and then try to push it into /system
*Edit* The first 2 links are .apk already so I assume you mean the 3rd link. I unzipped the "blue colored" & "blue nolip" werked fine for me. Which ones were you trying?

The third one..... nd yea what i did was extract the apk from the zip fike nd tryed to push it into the system-app and pressd paste and nothin happens.. i reeboot and it doesnt do anythin... nd yea i used root explorer....

Ok so I assume you mean the 3rd .zip in the 3rd link which is the "Blue Mms nolip zip"?? If so thats awesome because its one that I tried and actually the last one I pushed. Here is the .apk from the zip I downloaded try pushing it. Maybe you got a bad download or a corrupt file during the unzip(prob not). Lemme know how it werks. If it doesn't maybe some screenshots of what your /system/app/ looks like in root explorer. Good luck!

[HOW TO] CRT-Effect only

This is just the plain CRT effect. No custom roms, no pre-made files or anything. (You need root)
I've searched for this on XDA, Google, other forums etc. but I couldn't find it.
It always showed up ROMs including this feature, not the actual feature itself
DO A BACKUP BEFORE EDITING ANY FILES!
Also, you need root
1. Pull framework-res.apk from the /system/framework/ folder via ADB (Alternate way below*)
2. Decompile framework-res.apk with APKTool/APK Manager (Whatever you prefer..)
3. Navigate to /res/values/ and open the bools.xml file with Notepad++ (Notepad works too )
4. Search for "config_animateScreenLights" and change the "true" to "false".
5. Save, and compile the file. Open the fresh-compiled file and copy resources.arsc to the original apk. (Overwrite the existing one)
Click to collapse
Transfer the framework-res.apk file back to your phone, and then switch it with the original one
You must reboot to make it work!
*If you don't know how to push/pull files via adb, you can use Root Explorer and copy it to the /sdcard/ folder, then transfer it to your PC.
If you switch it back with root explorer, programs will start to force close. Just reboot and you'll be fine

Ah, so sorry.
Open the original framework-res with WinRar. And do the same with the modified. In there you'll see the resources.arsc file
If you don't know how to use APK Manager, use google.

I read your thread, and know what you posted.
What I'm saying is that if someone makes the anim for example KF3, it would only take a few seconds to upload so other people could use, while diy CRT anim takes at least 5 mins even if you know what you're doing.

also, i noticed the APK Manager made signed apk of less size as compared to original file

is that normal?

No, you don't ever want to sign system apps. Are you sure the permissions are correct? and what changes did you make?
I didn't put any permissions. How do I set them in the zip? And I change the 3g icon to 4g because I have virgin mobile so I can't get 4g but I want it to say 4g lol.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app
Well if you are installing it with a zip permissions are probably correct. I'm assuming you decompiled the apk changed the icon and compiled it again? If all you want to do is change an icon, just open the apk with 7zip or similar and replace the icon, no need to decompile. That should solve it. Let me know
Okay. I'll try that and if I do decompile it, how do I set the permissions? Cuz i decompiled settings.apk and made a XML change.

You would set permissions if you are just pushing the apk to your phone. Better question, how exactly are you installing the apk after you made the changes?
I just replace the old apk in the zip file and flash the ROM.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app
ok, then the updater-script in the zip is handling the permissions for you, so you don't need to worry about that.
So there is no need to sign anything at all? Awesome.

Apps in /system/app/ never get singed, apps in /data/app/ however have to be signed.

Hi I'm also trying to learn modifying systemUI.apk through smali edits
So as a start I just decompiled my systemUI.apk with apktool v1.5.2 with no errors. Then directly recompiled it. No modifications made. The resulting apk didnt have any META-INF folder and thus I suppose is unsigned. But pushing this apk to /system/app doesn't install it.. As a result after reboot I have no installed systemUI.apk
What am I doing wrong? BTW I'm on Sony xperia live with walkman. But I suppose this is a general thing. And yes I have installed all framework files and as a result no errors while de/recompiling

The best way in case of small edits is to open both your stock and your modified SystemUI.apk with 7-zip, then copy the META-INF and AndroidManifest.xml from the stock to the modded one.
Close both and push back your modded one to the phone.
Guess that work.

Crashing after modifying fusion.apk

Ok, I have been trying for a while now to change the HTC lock rings and there is a really cool thread on here by mohit1234: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1262990, anyway it has a heap of lock rings. Originally I could not put them on as he made them for a different phone model. So then I uploaded my fusion.apk and sent it to him. He made me custom lock rings with both the Earth and the Captain America Shield. So everytime i try to flash it to my phone nothing happens. So I made a copy of the .zip and extracted the fusion.apk and went to copy to the /system/apps directory with both "ES File Explorer" and "Root Browser Lite". But whenever I try to copy it the phone either crashes and restarts or says copy succesful and nothing happens. This also happens when I copy a droidsansfallback.ttf (modded with the emoji icons). But the font works when it says successful. Does anyone know what is happening? Mohit1234 also suggested to push using adb, would this help at all?

Without that patch, you can't muck about with /system
Total Crashing
Ok, I flashed a zip designed for my phone with the kernel you suggested, and my phone crashed twice (again) when copying the fusion.apk and the droidsansfallback.ttf doesn't even work when I copy it any more. Also when I plug it into my PC and choose "mount as hard disk" my phone crashes and reboots. So I am thinking I should just start again. I think I am going to flash hasoon200's "stock, rooted, deodexed" ROM.
I have tried to install this thing like 4 times, it is in my /system/lib/modules but I can't get it working. I have tried copying droidsansfllback.ttf modded with emoji into the /systom/fonts folder but when I restart it is reverted back to the old one. And seeing as I am new to this I can't decipher the instructions on how to install this.

Your problem I guess is due to the stock ROM that you have where you do not have busybox installed.
So I mod the updater-script so it can be installed without busy box.

(Note: I apologize if i have posted in a wrong forum, so please guide me here, i haven't had the time to read all the rules coz of this problem that iwant to be fix asap. Thanks and Respect)
I have ah CHINA version of Samsung Galaxy Ace s5831i, and because of the chinese apps that i want to get rid off, i flashed my phone to s5830i. (I think i used the files from youtube video. Everything seems to be fine except for the camera which i read one of the common fault when flashing this version but i also read that it can be replaced by an apk file (Which i think can only be replaced when rooted) So here is what i want to ask you i tried flashing it back to stock rom which use a single file from sammobile but i always get this (See attached picture)
Please be kind to help me in fixing my phone through flashing and getting back its camera if possible without rooting/ with rooting. Thanks!

Ok so now your phone is working right ?
So now download Root browser from playstore
Then open it and now go to device /system/Apps / here now find Camera.apk and delete it after that go back to your sd card copy camera.apk and move it to again above location and set permissions on it , they must be look like RW-R-R
Thats it your done.

Yes, its working now. If it's not too much can you provide some links for that -rw-r-r ? Coz what i find is rwxr-x, and also your talking about permissions (Do i need to tick the check box of Read,Write,Execute on Owner lane?)
I apologize for asking too much questions, thank you for understanding

I tried changing permissions of the camera apk (from rwxrr to rw-r-r) and pasting it on the systems folder using root browser like you said then after that i restarted my phone and saw the camera app again. But sad to say it's still not working and saying error message. What should i do next? Did i do something wrong?

There is no odex file attached in your file, just camera apk. I tried deleting both apk and odex in system/apps, Now the camera app doesn't show up after reboot -_-
