Hey guys im having a weird issue with my screen im hoping someone can help me out, earlier today when i pulled my phone out of my pocket it was frozen with a grey screen and no matter what i do i cant get rid of it,when i reset(power and volume) it turns of and back on right to the grey screen no sound or bootup nothing just grey, ive tried letting it die and still same thing,ive also removed sd card and tried plugging it to pc but it doesnt detect the device i cant get into recovery or anything any help will be really appreciated
Here is picture of screen BTW im rooted s off running viper and havent installed or flashed anything new in weeks

Replacing the screen works. Although I have seen on one occasion where it didn't fix it.

See if sprint will fix it. They can't tell if its rooted anyway until they fix it. I doubt they would make a fuss. If that does not work I can supply a screen for $60 shipped.

I did a restart and it went away. But i never seen this before.
It happened after I pulled my phone from pocket and I guess I pressed a combination on the screen.
I have seen this safe mode once on my galaxy s 2 Lte

Only time I seen this was when phone was damaged internally ...only way to get it off is to get a new phone

That happens when you hold the menu capacitive button as you're booting...
It's the exact same as safe mode in windows, only needed apps are loaded, so if you have an offending app that is severely messing your poop up, you can uninstall it without it interfering.

I had never seen this till just a few minutes ago, i'm on an epic 4g touch and had it alllll the way apart to solder in a wire to do the touchstone mod, got everything plugged back in and put back together and pushed power and saw SAFE MODE right away and then it rebooted itself, was all like what the hell did i manage to screw up now?!?!?! thankfully it rebooted normally and works fine... first thing i did though was google android safe mode...learn something new every day.....
i bought my s3 last week (2nd hand phone) but it still look like new, everything runs just fine. yesterday while i was playing game (MD3), the phone freezed and after that the screen turn half green (like in the pic). I take out battery, turn on, but the same thing happens again and again, and it wont boot any more. I tried to turn on downloading mode and flash again stock rom by ordin but no success! it seems to be the hardware fault! has anybody faced this problem and suggest what can i do now? replacing new screen will be very costly too bad for a monster

woah! this is bad. you should talk to the one you bought (original owner) ask for the receipt and maybe it can be replaced(or at-least can be repaired) .
too bad, its no gurantee deal! the fone isnt too much hot when i play the game. the screen replace will cost around 300 buck

i doubt its the game that cause this , it could be faulty to begin with
now im doubting that some problem related to chip or gpu as if the screen fails then why the fone couldnt boot into OS? it now freeze in samsung logo, i try flash stock rom using ordin but it also fails to boot.

are you even sure that the screen was the problem? maybe its the gpu or watever not the screen.
better to take it to an expert to know.

Even most probably the GPU or a connector. Since he was playing I'd say the GPU is toast.

Why not? Even if it was rooted, they'll swap the logic board since it's nearly impossible to check anything on a hardware-broken device.

I just turned my phone on and now all it's showing is a gray screen (see image) below.
Even when I pull the battery, it "boots" into this. After some time I do hear the booting sound.
The phone is unlocked/rooted/s-off'ed.
When I boot with the volume button down it does show something, but it's unreadable (only showing the top 1/2 part of the 1st text line)
Anyone here who might have a clue what is wrong, and how to fix it?

Try booting into the boot loader and see if it still does that if not your rom has gone corrupt. Superwipe and reinstall.

Looks like the LCD is damaged or the connection ribbon for the LCD is loose.
What everyone's said so far is right. Your LCD is either broken or has a loose cable.
Send it in for repairs.
I don't see why they wouldn't repair it even if you are rooted, as this is their flaw, not a result of your rooting.
But to be safe, try and flash an RUU on the phone, for now.

They replaced the motherboard... It's great, exept that I now can not root the phone anymore

Compass is stuck at the North, and GPS does not see any satellites (tested outside)

If they did and its back, its not necc a bad thing at all so lets be sure to not jump to conclusions and assume its all bad too...
Last time they had issues with it configured poorly and would shut off data if phone is asleep after midnight or whatever...so far I haven't seen this behavior... So maybe they fixed the issues it had before?

True, and a very good point. I just thought i'd point it out just in case
I hate it. Every time you plug your phone in to a computer it tries to install the software, and if you let it it'll fubar your adb and fastboot drivers. Not to mention I prefer my phone to not whore out all my information to every computer it gets plugged in to.
But anyways, now that I've removed some of HTC's bloat I'm liking the update.

Think were talkin bout two diff HTC sync's here, but yeah the notification crap when u plug in is junk...
I don't get pop up on my comp and adb is fine for me...just the phone pull down has those new notification crap clogging up ****. .

so, bought a cheap and known "faulty" s3, when i got it it wouldn't get passed the screen below

i eventually managed to get it into download mode (took about 3 hours of pressing the same buttons time after time) and flashed a ROM via odin, after the apparently successful flash the phone reboot, time and time again for around 30 minutes, like the clown i am i removed the battery (i know i know), so now it gets to the carrier logo, then the samsung logo and thats where it stays, it can enter recovery (stock i believe) but the volume buttons do nothing, i cant for the life of me get it into download mode again, should i cut my loses or is there anything else i can try?
Sell it instead of opening multiple posts on the same subject .
not really the same though is it as it now freezes on the samsung screen.

A coworker had some strange GPS problems. He had bought a used S3. It wasn't obvious at first, even with my real S3 next to it.
A look behind the battery cover showed it's true face, a fake S3.
On youtube there are enough videos that point out fake form real. Have a quick look and know for sure. It could help you find the error.

I would say, download the rom again and flash it again.
tried a couple now, always gets stuck at the sansung screen
