Busybox? - AT&T LG Optimus G

Do we need to have Busybox installed on our phones? Always had it on my other rooted and unlocked devices.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app

Only if you're doing anything with the terminal emulator, I believe.

There are a handful of root-aware apps that use busybox for various functions. All the ones I've seen check for it and will try to install a copy if it's missing (if they don't just include it). I personally like having it around because I like to do things in the shell and it brings a lot of the comfortable unix commands. But it's not necessary for operation of the phone.

For what it's worth, I've been using JRummy's BusyBox Installer with good results.

[working]Google Movies

I was able to rent, and watch a movie on my rooted NC. I followed this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15620050&postcount=175
instead of bin I typed in xbin.

So the takeaway from this is that Google Movies is looking for SU by name and renaming it MU (or just about anything else) gets around the "root" check.
Cool. Does this allow the Movies section in Google Market to show up?
From what I've read, yes it is looking for SU by name. You're root apps no longer work while in MU, just an fyi.
I don't have the new market on my NC any longer. I reverted to the older version. I rented the movie from my DROID with the new market. Opened the google videos app on my NC, linked to my gmail, and the movie was there ready for viewing.

It would be great if someone could make an app to toggle this.

I know it isn't an App (I'll work on that later) but here is a script you can run from a Terminal Emulator.
Just download the script to the root of your SDcard and then run this in Terminal:
Code:
sh /sdcard/googlevideo.sh
It'll Autodetect where SU is and whether you're running the script as Root or not. If you aren't Root it'll inform you whether you need to run "su" or "mu" to get Root. Once Run as Root it'll automatically rename SU as needed.
Download the Script here: http://db.tt/nNy1jCy
I started a topic for the script. If you have any questions ask there.

Dark themed Words with friends (no ads!)

All credit for this goes to decalex. I just wanted to pass it along. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1220069
Thanks for sharing it along

Here is v4.03 with no ads, not themed.
Thanks steel. My wife and i play it everyday and the ads are annoying.
Gracias!
Edit: not working! Tried installing over existing one, didnt work. Uninstalled existing game and tried again. Nothing. Moved it to data/app, changed permission and rebooted. Nothing.
Any idea?

I uninstalled the old one and then just did adb install on this one and it went fine.
i'm going to have to look up adb installations.
i've used adb for over a year but never installed with it. tried it offhand and it didn't work
i'm sure i'll get it to work eventually!

Do you have "allow installation of non-market applications" enabled?
Thank u...this is one of my favorites...

Is there anyway possible that sum1 could take the ads off of hanging with friends too? That is another really fun game that the ads ruin.
Sent from my Beastly EVO.. And did I mention it has 3D?
Thank you!

of course. I install a lot of apps, usually by adb pushing or installing through the sd card. neither worked here.
are you doing adb push or adb install? if the latter, what's the exact command I should be using?
thanks!
I posted a themed version of 4.03 AD free

Thanks that worked nicely.

Apps need root - safe?

Hi all,
I had a rooted device and I installed an app from market that requires no permission. However, this app needs root access. Would it mean that this app might change its permissions if it was granted the root access without I know about it?!
In other words, how much dangerous to grant root access to an app?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
As far as I know if the app is well known or provides sufficient information about its usage, its completely safe to grant root access.
Warning: it's better you Google about the app before installing for your safety.

I think it's save too, but check the reviews in the market, there can you find a lot of information

Thank you.
The app is droidwall. I need it to stop some other apps from having internet access (firewall). Reviews at market are positive.
Just wanted to know if a root-access app can do something I don't know about.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Giving root access to Droidwall is safe.
Yes, Droidwall is safe, check it myslelf. This however is the good example of using root access.
Generally to give root access you need to trust this app completely knowing that it can use and abuse practically anything on your device. There is nothing more powerfull than the root .
I am checking apps and roms for security issues myslef so if you wonder if anything is safe or not I would be happy to check and advise

Permissions

When I use like root explorer or anything that's needs superuser permissions it tells me granted permissions on an inactive shell. What does that mean?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Thanks everyone who has looked at this and not helped me
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
No problem. Sometimes we have more important things to do in life besides logging on every freakin day...like working and paying bills.

Are you sure it says inactive shell? Mine says interactive shell when out gives root permissions.
As to it's meaning, I don't know which is probably why no one answered before.
Read, Search, Read again, ... Then Ask with Tapatalk 2
I'm sorry it does say interactive.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
It just means the app has Superuser permissions and allows you to do things you'd normally need to be rooted to do. For example being able to modify system files. It's the equivalent of Administrative privileges on Windows. The interactive shell is just that; the things you interact with as the user.

[Q] cydia for android

Is there any app like cydia
For android
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
No, but there are alternative markets like cydia
It is not necessary, as our devices allow side loading applications.

You can just download apps from exterInal sources only allowing it when you install one...
There is no need for this. And I sure hope your not talking about getting paid apps for free
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Guys... as much as you know about rooting, I can say you have absolutely NO idea what jailbreak and Cydia is...
Cydia is like a one stop shop for everything jailbreak, it has themes, mods, hacks, and jailbreak only apps. It is NOT a place to sideload apps.
However, since Cydia is the only source of all things jailbreak, they do happen to have a (pretty popular) JB app called Installous which is pretty a shortcut for many apps on the app store (including paid).
But aside from that, Android probably won't have a universal Cydia like application thanks to diversity, different Android versions, AOSP/AOKP, manufacterer skins, and the list goes on. I believe Cyanogenmod was planning on releasing a root only app store, but even then it would not contain theming, mods, hacks like cydia does.

Nope
I'm talking about apps/tweaks
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Also Google Play isn't as strict as the iOS App Store so some apps that are forced to go to Cydia on iOS would be able to list in Google Play if they made the same software for Android. The individual device customization stuff is hard to do since there are so many different devices. Hopefully someday Google adds a way to customize colors, fonts, etc to stock android.

Just because we have Androids doesn't mean we're limited from iOS, I know exactly what cydia is. A one stop shop for mods, tweaks, and apps that normally wouldn't be on the App Store. Sounds like the XDA forums to me actually as I describe it.

Yep, but I was talking to the posters above me, who were pretty much assuming Cydia was a blackmarket for apps.

Simple answer us no. With android you have to put in your own work.
