What's AT&T policy on SIM unlock? - AT&T HTC One (M7)

I am going on a vacation on Monday. Since my developer edition has been delayed, I won't be able to get it before I leave town and so I am consider getting one from my local AT&T store.
It seems that the boot loader of the AT&T version is unlockable, what about sim unlock? I still have a year to go for my two years contact with AT&T. So I have to pay them the full price anyway, but the question is will they do the Sim unlocking for me when I buy the phone?

If you paid full price for the phone you should call AT&T and ask them to unlock the SIM..
As far as I know, they should do it since it's not tied to a contract..

Do T-Mobile USA Lock Their Phones?

Just wondering if T-Mobile in the USA lock their phones as I'd buy the Blaze/Relay out of contract when it comes out. Thanks!

They lock it, but you can buy an unlocked version, or buy a locked version and unlock it with an unlock code

Unlocked phones are the way to go
Almost all the major US carriers sell their phones locked. However, there is some kind of regulation that they must upon request provide the unlock code to the customer. I just google T-Mobile's unlock code docs, and here is a link to the cached document:
http://74.6.117.48/search/srpcache?ei=UTF-8&p=unlock+code&fr=moz35&u=http://cc.bingj.com/cache.aspx?q=unlock+code&d=4814057732507625&mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US&w=306b1278,f2206927&icp=1&.intl=us&sig=7aRKgNJGsEkbvHzQ_G2bLw--
I can't remember what the regulation is on this but it is most likely contingent or similar to what is in this T-Mobile doc which states in essence the release is contingent on where the phone was bought, number of days on contract/service and/or contract type with the caveat the code must be available from the manufacturer.
That all being said, you're better off buying an unlocked phone. My last two phones have been unlocked and were bought on eBay. This year I saved at least $20 by going straight to a Chinese vendor. I bet if you looked on eBay, you can find the unlocked phone you mention in your post.

Unlocked when paid in full off contract?

I will be in the US for vacation in about six weeks and planning to buy The One.
Can you please help me with some questions:
1. Assuming that by then stock would be plenty and they don't refuse off contract sales. My question is: will A&TT or T-Mobile sell me the phone without me getting any phone service. I have my SIM with international roaming and do not need any kind of US phone service. I just need the Hardware. Is it possible?
2. Because I would be paying the phone without any contract or subsidy (full price). Can you confirm it will be unlocked to use with a SIM from any operator? Is it something automatically or I have to request it in the store?
3. I'm ok if they can only be unlocked. But have to ask if The One bough from operators can also be customized with other ROMS.
3. Which carrier is prefered to do this (if can be done) AT&T or T-Mobile.
Thanks you!

You probably want to buy the unlocked version. It is cheaper, unlocked, and will be able to use custom roms after unlocking the bootloader http://shopamerica.htc.com/brands/HTC-mobile/homebrands/index.htm
If not to answer those questions
1. Yes you can buy off contract
2. It will not be unlocked. You probably can unlock it easily with something like cellular unlocker service
3. Right now the bootloader is unlockable. We do not know if they will lock in the future
3(again). AT&T has earlier release but it doesnt really matter

Thanks for the prompt response. I would like to buy it from HTC directly but what I planning is a road trip and won't be staying more than a couple of days in any place. It is difficult to time processing and delivery times from HTC and I don't know how strict they are with billing address differing from shipping address.
Bummer they would not unlocked it even after paying it in full. What "unlocker" services do you recommend. I have never used one.

There are a lot out there like http://www.cellunlocker.net/ they will just send you a code that you can enter after putting a none AT&T sim in it. Now a disclaimer from me. I have heard of a lot of phones being unlocked by them but the HTC One has not been unlocked on AT&T yet as far as I know.
I just bought one from a employee on craigslist and trying to get it unlocked

If any carrier sells you a phone for off contract pricing you're eligible/entitled to have it unlocked when you walk out the door. Just call them.

Sim unlock of T-Mobile HTC One

I heard from several T-Mobile HTC owners that they tried to unlock it from some websites but after paying $25 they found out that those sites don't have the unlock code for the T-Mobile version of HTC.
I can't unlock it by calling T-Mobile as I'm on prepaid and I only use T-Mobile about 15 days a year when travelling through the states so I'm looking for a site that somebody has had success unlocking T-Mobile HTC One.
If you were able to get it sim unlocked, please, list the site and the cost.
I asked for the sim unlock yesterday at tmobile, they replied today.
HTC denied it because we have to wait 40 days of use first.. or pay your bill, I will call them back.
edit: its not HTC its Tmobile that denied it, they want users to use the phone for 40 days,
edit: im calling them back right now, cause I did pay it in full. they are going to put another request to HTC.
thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We have received your SIM Unlock Request. Unfortunately, we are unable to process your request at this time because your Equipment Installment Plan is not paid in full. You can make a payment by logging into the T-Mobile Web Site www.T-Mobile.com, through our automated system by dialing 611 from your handset or 1-800-937-8997 from a landline phone. Once the Equipment Installment Plan has been paid in full please contact us to have another SIM Unlock Request submitted.
another email cause I requested for 2 htc ones.
Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We have received your SIM Unlock Request. Unfortunately, this subscriber is not eligible to receive the unlock code at this time. I've been T-Mobile's PrePaid customer since 2011. Bought HTC One on launch day, called them that first weekend, and my phone was unlocked within 24hrs, on a Weekend!!!
I did buy it at full price.
That said, my gf's iPhone 5 they won't unlock for 40days even though it's paid in full... weird.

I wouldn't know if the seller had it paid in full and even if I know I can't ask T-Mobile to unlock it as I don't have a receipt. I'm in Canada and the phones price from T-mobile in US on a plan is $579+tax but I'm not on a plan, I'm on pre-paid, if you are on pre-paid, you can't buy the phone online or by calling T-mobile, if you find a store that carries them then they will tell you the full price for pre-paid customers is $650+tax but some pre-paid customers said that when they run it through the price comes out at $610+tax for pre-paid plans. When I talked to a TMO store on a couple of occasions they all said both times that I would need to pay $650+tax, not $610. Either way it's quite more than $570 that I paid on craigslist for a new phone even if I have to pay $25 to get it unlocked online.
That's not my point where I bought it from. My question for this thread was: Has anyone been able to successfully sim unlock it from those online sites? If yes, what site was it and what was the price
okay peeps... check it out, I understand why some had there unlock codes given to them..
find someone that has a T-Mobile acct, prepaid or contract, it doesn't matter, I have received my unlock codes from T-Mobile with prepaid also..
I remembered they did that to me along time ago. the reason they said I can have it at the end of the month, it will be 40 days of service on May 28.
so if you have a friend that u know who has been with T-Mobile for over 40 or more days of service in good standing, and they also have to be using the phone for at least 5 days with there sim card on the phone, they will release the unlock code.
they can tell if they have been using the phone with the existing sim. u can unlock 1 phone every 90 days.

Hi there,
I tried unlocking my phone from htconlineunlock.com . It did generate a code for me. But when I put that into my phone it says incorrect pin.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Do not try to unlock using cellunlocker.net, at least until confirmed working. I checked my IMEI and chose US T-Mobile for my operator and they confirmed it as unlock code available. I paid $25 but didn't receive a code. 12 hours later I got a refund with a message that the phone is too new asking to check again in a couple of weeks once they update their database.

Try it several times, I heard that for some it may take as many as 6 attempts and then it finally takes the code. If not, ask them for refund. I didn't get a code from cellunlocker.net and even didn't have a chance to ask for refund, they just did it once they found out they couldn't get the code for me.

I guess then you can request a refund from them.
Hopefully we'll have someone successfully unlock it from one of those sites and will have a report here as to what site it was. I'm eagerly waiting to get it unlocked. I already cut my sim card to micro size and am currently using it in my old HTC Amaze with the leftover plastic that I use as an adapter for the smaller sim.

Im just doubtful about one thing. I bought the phone from the US. But im Home (india) for the summer and was trying to use the indian sim to unlock it. Can that be the problem? Like do I need an at&t or some other US carrier sim to unlock it?
I am in the same boat. Bought an HTC one from a US owner eyeing on the fact that it has 1700Mhz support so I can run it on my Wind Mobile network. I need a code now it's impossible for me to use the T-mobile service for 60 days when I'm physically not there.

That's exactly my story. I do have a prepaid account on T-Mobile (their $3/per day plan) but I only use it about ten days a year and I think they ask to use it actively like every day for 60 days for pre paid accounts in order to unlock, but even if I do, I still won't be able to do that as I don't have a receipt.
I guess we just have to be patient and wait till one of those unlocking sites gets T-Mobile codes on their database
Im in the same boat too.
Bought this phone in the US and was told by the rep that customer service would unlock it. Well ive tried 3 different times and they keep refusing. Also ive tried about 10 different online unlock services, all have failed. I really dont wanna have to sell this phone back into the US because it cost me over $800 after import duty and i'd get nowhere near that. And of all the friends that i have in the US, none of them have service with t-mo or know anyone who does. Is t-mo really that ****ty?
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, please share.
I tried www.myhtcunlock.com last night. Paid $35. In the morning I received a refund from them with a message that the phone is too new asking to try again in a couple of weeks.
If anyone is successful in unlocking it from a site, let us know what site it was.
I've used htcsimunlock.com a few times. It usually comes out to $15-20, but they have not disappointed me yet.

Why won't Att let me unlock my phone

I have the att HTC one that I bought off contract at best buy around july. I've been considering unlocking the phone to test out T-Mobile. I've been requesting online from att to have the device unlock but it keeps telling me that the device currently can't be unlocked. What gives?

How long have you had service? You need to have ATT service for a minimum 6 months I believe.
I have been with att since 2009. I am still under contract til Oct 2014 but that shouldn't have anything to do with it since the phone was paid in full. I thought it was six months for their gophones? At least that's what I understood from their website.

i have used them a few times. the unlock cost me $3.20 and about 2 hours. a few times they took longer. but it's a comin'
and then you don't have to beg for a solution, when you already paid so much for the phone. :silly:
Okay well here's a quick one to bust some bubbles. I bought my HTC One via Wal-Mart on promotion in April. In June I figured to hell with At&t. With that being said I rooted the phone and got S off. Then found a mod on the Development fourm for the One that let me unlock the international menu. I bought a Net10 SIM Card at Best Buy. Cut the SIM to fit and BOOM!!!!!!!! No need for a UNlock code or any of that. Net10 gave me the apn info and from there I've been able bypass all the usual hassle.

OK I was finally able to unlock the phone. I called Att and told them that I had purchased the phone off contract at best buy and that when I would request the unlock code via their website it wouldn't accept my request. She then tells me that if I had bought it off contract the phone should have been unlocked, which was a lie. So then she starts questioning me asking where I bought it, how much I paid etc. I then told her look I have the receipt if you don't believe me. She says well we are going to need you to fax us the receipt. While she is setting up the claim she asked why I wanted to unlock it. I told her because At&t coverage at my house sucks and I wanted to test out t-mobile since my brother gets excellent coverage on his htc one. So I faxed the receipt and next morning had the unlock code. I tried unlocking the phone only to realize that since I had converted my phone to gpe I had to reconvert back using the leaked ruu and then unlock the phone. I am happy to report that finally I was able to unlock the phone. And then I converted back to gpe. Far way better speeds and coverage on T-Mobile prepaid than on att. Well at least at my home. I'm looking testing the coverage on T-Mobile at work and school before I make my decision on fully changing carriers.

Hi ,
I flashed a hell fire rom on my att htc one. Can i just enter the unlock code or do I need to first restore my phone to what it was before (as it came from AT&T and then enter unlock code ).
OP,
did you ever get the phone unlocked?
I'm in a similar situation as you but have a Moto X and they flat out refused to unlock my phone.
Tried some 3rd party unlockers and the code they gave me did not work.

Normally their policy is after 3 months from the moment you got the phone you can request the unlock code. and also the unlocking really comes out of who you talk to... Some are very easy going other not.

Yea, i saw that its 60 days. is it possible to activate my phone overseas for 60 days? It really does seem like the unlocking is very random and down to whoever you get on the customer support line. I've had no luck and have a 500 dollar paper weight !
me and my brother both bought our AT&T HTC one's in contract.
we both used a third party online unlocker to unlock both our phones.
Costs us each 10$ and within minutes our phones were unlocked.
it's stupid of them to antagonize their clients like that.
just drives people aways.

T-Mobile

I have the opportunity to purchase a Galaxy S9 + for T-mobile and would like to use it on ATT. Can someone tell me if this is possible?
As long as it's unlocked you can. I'm bringing my att s8's over to T-Mobile.
When you buy it from TMobile it is locked to them. You would have to go through the unlock process which I believe requires you to use it with TMobile for 45days and to fully pay off the device.
It will be locked to T-Mobile (you will have the Device Unlock App installed in the T-Mobile folder - which you will need to use it to unlock your phone).
However, I am not sure about the waiting period before unlocking. But once you are allowed to unlock it, you don't need to pay the full price. You will have to use an unlocking service to register your IMEI as unlocked.
Once you get your phone, ask them when can you unlock it and if you need to wait.

It will work if it is unlocked. But please if you are buying from a stranger and they are the original owner, go to the T-Mobile store with them to verify it's actually paid off. They should have a receipt of purchase since it was just released. Since it released on the 17th, it shouldn't even be unlocked as it usually takes 40 days of activation on the network to have it unlocked if it's through t-mobile. And it doesn't have to be paid off to have it unlocked so they can sell it to you even if they still owe than report it lost or stolen. Just be cautious, good luck.
