[Q] X10, computer now says USB device has Malfunctioned won't recognize. HELP - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I have an Xperia X10 that I gave to my husband. He's good with computers etc.. and he went ahead and unlocked and rooted this phone. It's working awesome - EXCEPT - when you plug it into the computer via USB the computer will NOT recognize it. It says exactly, " "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctions, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"".
Here is a bit of background info:
Before my husband rooted the phone etc. the micro usb port on the phone wasn't working properly - it was loose and you would have to really wiggle it, bend it etc.. to make the debug engage. He did get it to flash/root/unlock/install custom rom successfully ( he installed doomkernel 2.6.29-modFXP-DooMKernel-v06) all while the phones usb wasn't working ideally. At this point he was trying out some settings and branded it as a X10i Generic. (This phone WAS a Rogers phone and we are in Canada). He then wanted to change the branding since x10i wasn't working too great. At this point the USB port on the phone wouldn't engage into debug or charge anymore so we took it to a repair place and they soldered the usb port back - they told us this was common (them coming loose). After they soldered it they said it wouldn't go into debug and that it was because (probably) of the firmware my husband put on but didn't really know.
From that day on this phone has never connected to the computer successfully - the computer won't even recognize it as a memory card - as soon as you plug it in it tries to install drivers and then the computer says exactly this::
"USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctions, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
Our computer is running Windows 7 (64bit) - and the phone use to work fine.
We have tried using SDK tool, installing drivers manually when the phone is plugged in, but the computer will just say that it is already up to date, and it names the phone ' UNKNOWN DEVICE" and has the exclamation box next to it indicating it's malfunctioned. Sony software (PC Comp. etc) also will not detect the phone.
Have been trying to get this working for about 2 months now. 2 months of reading, google searches, more reading, trying idea after idea, and it doesn't work.
Has this happened to anyone else? Can someone help out here? Is this a firmware/software problem (maybe because it's been branded as a x10i)? Or could this all be a matter of the USB port being improperly fixed?

Facing same USB malfunctioned issue
I am facing the same issue since quite long since i have rooted my Samsung Galaxy 2 SGH T-989. My phone gets connected properly but when i try to transfer any of the files from computer to my phone. It gets disconnected automatically after copying the stuff till 5% to 10% and shows ''USB device has malfunctioned".
I am also trying to search and rectify this issue, but till now i have found nothing. Please let me know if you come across of kind of solution for it.

Im sometimes facing the that unrecognized USB but, everthing working.

I faced the exact same problem with my x10 mini. It wouldn't charge properly nor connect to my PC. I would have to wiggle the micro USB port and cable to get it working, which actually got me wondering if the problem was really the USB port. After I've bought a male-male USB to micro USB cable everything worked fine. Same thing happened with a brand new x10. I tried to use the USB cable I bought instead of the original one which came with the phone and you wouldn't guess, everything works fine.
So try to connect it with another USB - micro USB cable.

We have already tried connecting it to all of the (10) usb ports on our computer and we have tried NUMEROUS cables ( between my husband and I we have probably 8 cables, and have tired them all)

Can't connect to pc

Hello,
I have a problem with my HTC Legend. My pc doesn't recognize my phone when I plug the USB cable in. I don't get a USB-menu where I can choose between the different modes, the phone only charges...
I have read a lot of threads all over the internet, but I couldn't fix the problem. Here are some things I already tried:
- USB Debug enabled
- Ask which USB mode to use enabled
- Tried different USB ports on different computers
- I did a hard reset on the phone
- Rebooted the PC and phone multiple times
I really don't know what else to do right now. Maybe it's a problem with the drivers on my pc (windows 7 x64)? I don't need HTC sync, I just want the phone to act as a disk drive.
I hope someone can help me and many others too I think, with this problem!
Hey, this probably won't do anything, but mine is realllyyyy touchy, like I wiggle it a tiny bit and it will cut out or start working. Otherwise, try the cable with another phone if possible, it could be the cable, I don't think it'll be the phone if none of that works.
you may have the same problem i had.
see my post.
I have windows 7 X64 and my Legend works fine... the windows no is the problem windows install the legend good
Having the same problem, i've decided like Meocene said, that the usb port is busted. Mine still charges luckily, but connecting to a PC doesn't work in any mode. Windows reports an unknown device for which it can't find drivers, Linux is a bit more helpfull and blurts out messages about not being able to enumerate a USB port. Worst part, mine hasn't been properly rooted yet and still running on a original Sense ROM...
That was precisely the problem I was having - would charge but nothing else. Either send it back 4 repair or do it yourself.
Once I replaced mine everything started working and I'm now running CM7.1 - is nice.
My HTC LEgend like your,
I usualy restart the Phone when i connect the Phone with PC by cable

USB cables

Okay this has me beat, why would a USB cable work perfectly fine with Win XP, but not Win 7?
So I have this pair of cheap micro USB cables the came in a set, and both perfectly under win xp, I can transfer and charge without problem in both USB and MTP mode.
However they simply don't work under win 7. The computer can see the phone more or less under both MTP and USB mode, but sometimes it cannot access the phone/card content at all, and sometimes it can see the file but cannot open it.
If the cable is crap and cannot transfer files, it should acts the same under both version of windows, right?
I found the same problem recently. I have a cheap usb cable and it works without problem to charge the phone, transfer files via adb and such, but you can't for example flash via Odin or mount USB storage from CWM, it simply don't work.
I'm asume the cable has something or better, lacks something that the original cables don't have, so maybe that's the reason why they're cheap.
As for XP and 7, they handle the USB drivers differently as well as the ports. Don't know exactly why, but I've found several devices (USB) working on 7 and don't working on XP for some reason I suppose... (not related to drivers or ports)
im having same problem! cheap usb cable wont work in windows 7 and as soon as i swap it for official usb cable from Samsung works no problem :? weird!!
My old (stock) cable could connect fine to both Kies and Odin, but not mass storage.
My new cable when connected won't let me transfer files on my desktop (Win7 32bit), but will on my laptop (Win7 64bit) and work pc (XP). This happens with this cable on both my SGS IIs. Displays as a drive on all systems though.
Baffling
Good to know it's not just me lol. It's not due to "cheapness" either, I have other cheap cables that works just fine.
I don't pretend to expert of any type, but this really has me scratching my head. I mean it's just 4 metal wires connecting one point to the other, why would it work under one set of software not another?
I have had this not connecting correctly in both XP and Win7 (and heard of it in Macs). It didn't matter if I used a cheap or original USB cable.
What I did notice was that it worked fine in the first USB port I connected to in a particular computer. It would always work in that port. If I however plugged into another USB port on the same computer, then there would be problems.
This was tried on a handful of PCs and the same thing happened. I think the problem lies with the phone, as it happens on different PC O/S and Mac O/S. It must recognise the computer and make a connection relating to that USB port only. The only solution is to keep on using the same USB port.

I noticed the USB thing on my desktop with my first cable/phone combo, but not with my new ones.
So for me at any rate it's definitely a cable problem. My "old" phone is from May, the new last week.

Probably a bad usb connector on your phone. What rom are you currently on?
I was fearing this. Its all stock, not even rooted.
IF i have to get a new usb port, do i have to do any soldering?
When I had this problem I downloaded multiple different drivers and eventually found ones that worked . Try Google searching i777 usb drivers. I downloaded ones that worked from softpedia actually.

No soldering required. It's just a ribbon cable that connects to the main chip. Took me about an hour from start to finish, but i was being really careful.

He has said his computer recognizes the device, albeit it sees it as an unknown device. And it makes a sound when plugging it in. This tells me it's not a usb port problem but a driver problem. I have had this same problem. As I stated above. Even after installing kies it still didn't recognize it. I had to install the android sdk package, open the program and update, and then it still wouldn't recognize it. I had to download separate usb drivers for the phone as well. Who knows why, some computers or operating systems just have a harder time with the drivers. That's the problem in my opinion. Here's hoping it's not a usb port problem. Also this would prevent charging if it were a faulty usb port on the phone wouldn't it?

I wonder if the OP tried this on a computer with Windows XP. I've noticed Vista and 7 seem to have a hard time discovering/installing some usb devices. As for it not charging also..I think the pins inside the port are used separately for charging and connecting to pc.
My computer recognized my phone fine back when it was the Captivate, but it has a really hard time with my GS2. It often will say "invalid hardware id" or not show up at all. Usually it's fixed by swapping ports.

[Q] USB not detected

Hi, my phone just charges when I connect to any PC, it doesn't detect it on the system and even on the phone. I tried to check and uncheck the usb debugging and the logo came back on the phone (but still nothing in the PC). And now whenever i plug it in the usb debug mode comes and when I try to use mass storage option it allows but PC dosnt respond in a matter of seconds it goes away. My friend had flashed my phone with the stock rom 4.2.1 from XDA itself last year sometime in november and after that it has been great. I believed it was a cable fault so I showed it to a repair shop where the guys checkd with their PC and a new cable and none of their PCs detected it, even the OTG cable they tried wasn't detected on the phone. They say its an error in the Jack which can be repaired in a couple of hours for Rs 250. I have no problem in doing that but I don't know if its a jack error or something inside my phone (some sort of setting) causing it. Please help

Question Unable to connect Redmi Note 12 Pro Plus to my PC via USB

I have tried repeatedly to connect my phone to my PC (Windows 11) without any luck. Normally I would expect that just connecting the USB cable would be enough but no (I have 2 identical phones). I can connect through bluetooth and transfer files without issue. I have installed this driver as I thought being a new phone it may need a new driver still no luck. I tested the cable on my old LG phone and I can connect and transfer, I also tested the cable that came with the phone. The phone is the Chinese model with that MIUI. The phone does nothing except recharge when connected and it does not appear in windows. I have enabled USB debugging. Anyone have any idea what the problem is?
After repeating the whole exercise it appears I may have had a faulty USB A to USB C converter connected to my PC (newish case). Works sometimes, sometimes not. Using a USB A at the back of the PC now faithfully connects and solves the problem.
