Otterbox defender - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello everyone,
I would just like to know who bought one of these, do you like it, and could you post a pic of your phone inside it. Deciding if I want one or not and would love some feed back.
Thank you in advance!

Haven't bought one yet but went to the mall to try it out its bulky but a nice bukllk IMO the clips doubles as a kickstand I love it just have to convince my wife to let me buy it lol

I paid $60 for mine from Best Buy it's really nice and really protect the phone the only problem I have is that there's a hole in the screen protector with the home button is and when I'm at work the flour (pizza shop) and food gets inside the screen protector through the home button hole.
I love it but I'm sad about that... I will probably put a little piece of my old screen protector over the hole... (jerry rig) lol
Also people complain that the screen protector isn't flush with the screen. I notice this but it doesn't bother me nor does it make the phone harder to use. For me.....

But yeah I will definitely let you know how it works out. I thought about just using clear tape but I didn't want any sticky residue on my $60 case.
I guess I'm kind of bummed out that I have to "mod" this case but the "mod" isreally cheap if not almost free and I'm not sure if there any better cases out there although I have not done much research

Honestly you're right it almost feels like double the weight (ok not double but it's noticable) . When I'm off work for a long period of time I usually take my phone out of the Otterbox case and wow a lot lighter...
But for me the case (protection) is still worth it...

I have had it on since Day 1 and it is by far one of the best cases for protection out there.
BUT:
1) BULKY and stick rubber exterior makes it gather dust/dirt and hard to slide in pockets
2) DUST gets under the integrated screen protector constantly.
3) HEAVY ..... phone feels like a feather when you take it out .

It does and doesn't at the same time.
The added grip because of the rubber outer shell helps it feel secure and not slip out.
The increase in thickness and shape makes it feel more natural in my hand as opposed to like a thin slippery blade. I dont have ogre sized hands , so it helps it feel better.
It does bug me a little the way the raised rim sticks up however when im swiping or doing a screenshot.

using a small piece of a regular screen protector over the home button cut out keeps the flour and pizza shrapnel out from under my screen protector. But, it's aesthetically noticable and makes the home button a little "harder" to press. But I'm gonna keep it on so I won't have to clean out my case every day.

Best buy price matched amazon. I got it for 34.90 haha awesome!
Probably gonna rip out this built in screen protector though. I already have a great zagg one on here
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2

I have one, but like everyone else I get dust under the built in protector. I removed it once and put on an invisisheild by zagg. It seemed to work nice untill I realized the spen was leaving marks in it. I backed a new protector on kickstarter by Sir Lancelot's Armor called the holy grail. Hopefully it will fit in this case.

I've got the Commuter since yesterday and it's nice. I don't know how you guys can handle the defender. Too much. The Commuter has all the protection it needs.
To prove that, I had a rinky-dink plastic case on that didn't cover the top and bottom. Straight launched my phone from about 5 feet with it at a gas station. It made some nasty noises and bounced all around.
Not a scratch

I known that ballistic has a similar case but with no holes waiting for it to show up in stores to see if I want that one instead

+1 on the commuter couldn't stand the defender! Fantastic protection with minimal bulk. Even compared to a ballistic case its sleeker and lighter....
TaPpEd from my TwEaKeD N2

I gotta say, loving the defender. It's big but gives the phone a more solid feel for me. I'm not scared that I'll drop it taking it out of my pocket now because it has grip. And even if it does fall it will probably be fine haha
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 2

Got the Defender a week ago and I don't find it to feel particularly big or heavy. I had a Rezound with an extended battery before and it's no thicker or heavier than it was. I don't find the dust under the screen protector bothersome because it's totally unnoticeable in most circumstances, and I don't notice the screen protector not sitting flush unless I'm looking for it.
Love the feel of it, much more than the older Defenders. It has the rubberized feel with less of the gripping everything and dust collecting of the old ones. It still does to an extent, but not as much, and it feels more solid and not as soft as the older ones.

Screen protector, flip case, naked, other?

Not sure if this should go in the Q&A or accessories forum. But I am asking a question, so I will post here and a mod can move it if need be.
My girlfriend and I both have the note. I did not like any of the cases at the AT&T store, so I went with a screen protector for now. She chose a pink backplate with a flip to cover the front of the phone and no screen protector. She ran without screen protector on her evo for a while with no issues, but usually carried it in a holster style case that covered the entire phone when not in use. I generally carry my phone in my front pants pocket with nothing else in the pocket.
I've noticed that her screen looks so much clearer and more vibrant then mine. And while I feel a little scared of not using a screen protector, I am jealous of her screen every time I see it. Now mine doesn't look bad really, hers just looks better.
It got me wondering how everyone else protects their screen. Please vote in the poll and feel free to comment as well.
I Use the flip cover with replacement back. No issues whatsoever. Carry it in front pocket sometimes with change or keys. I Try not to make that a habit though. Only issue i have is the lower left hand corner is starting to tattered a little bit.
Cosmo D from outer space!
I came to rock the human race!
I didn't get a flip case because it won't really protect the phone from slips and falls. Considering that the screen is in the most danger when being used, a flip case will also be useless then.
I would also avoid screen protectors because they generally look like crap.

Naked for the win. I have a tpu case for rough situations, but it's rarely on my phone. I also have the flip cover but don't use it much. Always been a fan of using my phones naked.
As for screen protectors, I've never used them much because the naked glass feels best.I just make sure to give my phones a pocket of their own. I do end up with tiny scratches over time, but not enough to bug me. I also upgrade once a year using family members' upgrades, so not many scratches accumulate anyways.

No screen protection on mine. I don't like the way they feel. The only thing I changed was I cut apart the flip case that came free with the phone and replaced the back so it wouldn't be so slippery.

Go for it! Just don't blame me if you break your screen, haha. Other than the screen breaking, which is still a worry even with a case and screen protector, you'll come to realize scratched plastic isn't the end of the world.
I like using phones bare as they were designed. I compare it to sex...feels a lot better without protection but there's always that increased risk...haha =]

I'm not worried about breaking the screen, I am worried about scratching the glass. The way my luck works, I could drop my phone 3 feet onto an asphalt parking lot and have the screen not break, but somehow accidentally kick it and send it skidding face down across the parking lot. I use this analogy because I actually did this with a pair of prescription sunglasses lol.
Hey, I've been having this same delema. Bought the att screen protector, which kills quality. Other than the fear of scratching the screen, I hate how much it picks up finger prints. If I could get a protector that didn't pick up fingerprints and kept the clarity of naked, I'd do that for sure.
Also, how tough is it to actually scratch the screen? I know gorilla glass is sometimes really good and sometimes not, depending on the phone.

I came from an iPhone 3GS with an otter box defender, to an ATRIX 4G with an otter box defender...to this beast. I wanted a case to protect it, but didn't like the way it made the phone feel. I also had an issue with the anti-glare screen protector that ATT pushes in their stores, as they SEVERELY decrease image quality on the screens. I ended up going with some very inexpensive (3 for $5) crystal clear protectors from Amazon. 4 months later and i'm still on the first one with just a few tiny scuffs on the protector. My backplate is beat all to hell, but the rest of the phone (i.e, the screen) is mint.
Go naked but just be careful with the spen it can do damage, little scratches.(barely visible)
My back plate is as good as new and I've had the Note for a while now..
Dang what are you guys doing?? Lol

Anyone sporting a naked Note 2?

Was just curious to know, is anyone out there rocking their Note 2 in its birthday suit? If so, any scratches yet? I myself have had a screen protector on since day 1 of owning mine whereas my friends that also have it are all naked. Just curious to know if anyone has any serious scratches of their own.

I keep mine from things that have a high mohs rating and I stay scratch free.

I agree 100%
Another area of concern was the use of the S Pen on the screen. If that would over the course of its life span leave any surface scratches as well.

I have had a screen protector from day one but I went weeks without a case. Just put the Samsung protective cover on and it is surprisingly thin and light.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
I had mine naked for a few months and did see a few tiny scratches appear so covered up. First with a Copter screen protector which sucked!! It made the screen look like ****e. Small text was impossible to read and the S-Pen marked it. I later opted for a very cheap harder plastic no-name protector which is excellent. I have plans to buy a 10 pack and change every other month or so.
The way I see it you preserve the second-hand value if the screen is scratch free. If in two years time you want to sell it for a good price you just need to invest in a new flip-cover remove the screen protector and it's almost like new.
100% all natural. No screen protector. No case. I like the feel and look without bulky protection. I allow the Gorilla Glass 2 to do its thing.
Afterall, its a phone; its going to get used, scratched and dinged. I want to enjoy the complete phone experience in the meanwhile.
Have you seen those cars that had the bra on the front? People removed them only to find out that their paint was now two-toned, and dirt and debris had etched the paint along the edge of the bra, not to mention having a red sports car with a black mask on.
I was naked on every smart phone I've had up until the Note 2. I've always gotten scratches on every other phone no matter how careful I was.
I also have a small hard case on it. I would love to run naked on that too but the smooth back is just begging to slip out of my hand. Plus the case makes it feel more solid and reduces the creeks and growns coming from the crappy plastic Samsung insists on using.

I would be concerned if a plastic pen scratched glass.
In other words, it won't.
The glass with the oleophobic coating is at least 9 mohs.
Without the coating, its still 6.5-ish.
Plastic is around 3 or 4.
No screen protector here, I adsolutely hate screen protectors. I think they ruin the clarity of the screen. But I do have one of those folio style cases so the screen still gets covered when its not in use.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
I've been using the Seidio active case and like it, no screen protector. Just ordered a flygrip and will probably rock it naked with that.
Like others have said I won't use a screen protector as I trust the screen plus hate the feel and affect on clarity.
I'm using a cheap tpu case partly for peace of mind of a little protection and partly because it has a built in kickstand that isn't very intrusive and has been pretty handy to have.
I have mine naked, but the first few days of owning it the phone fell upside down on the wooden floor so now I have 2-3 large scratches on the screen from grains of sand
Same set up I run on every phone I've owned:
Verizon slim hard kickstand case, no belt clip
Cheap eBay matte screen protector
I keep my phone in my pocket so I need a slim case. Every since the T-Bolt, a kickstand is a must for me. I absolutely hate clear screen protectors since it always feels like I'm dragging my finger across the screen rather than sliding it. I ended up buying the $12 pack at Big Red since my phone arrived before my China protectors. The cheap matte ones look great, don't smudge, and make the screen silky smooth.

Screen protector I got from Verizon and an all white Androidified case from Cruzerlite. My hands are a little dry so carrying the phone naked (the phone) is slippery in my hands. The case gives me a nice grip to hold on to the phone.

Oops, sorry for the sideways photo.
My typical progression is: get a new phone. Think "I need to protect this thing" and get a case. Rock case for a week or 2 and then hate the extra bulk. Take off case and love the natural feel of the phone.
I followed suit with this phone. Had the flip case ordered before the phone was out. Got the phone and immediately popped the case on. Rocked it for 2 weeks and took it off.
However, I have actually put the case back on because I found usefulness besides the protection. With the phone's size, the case flap provides more area to maneuver it. It also prevents accidental home button presses when the phone is in my pocket.

Only thing about that case is that it gets scuff marks too easily, I had one on my phone for a week and it was scratched up and had a lot of scuff marks on it, so now I have the poetic flip case and I love it!

Just ordered a Lime Green Goospery case, hopefully the "shimmer" effect on it isnt too bad... lol
Was also considering that one too, cause I like the TPU cases with nice solid colors, that create a full lip around the front (looks more complete and better than the ones that just wrap the corners or sides a bit)
I also had a clear one, but as noted got too scuffed up too fast. Now have Seidio Surface with kickstand.

Otterbox defender series case in realtree and green. This is a great case for protecting your phone but it also hides this very nice looking phone.
Dust gets between the screen protection and the screen of the phone thru the holes for the speakers and the back/home buttons. I work in a very dusty environment and this is kind of a pain.
Screen protection also takes some getting used to, it makes the touchscreen....different. once you get used to it, it's not bad but their is a learning curve.
All in all it's a good case with a little to be desired. If I had to do it all over again, I would probably do it again. Their is no perfect solution except maybe a phone that doesn't need a case so this is maybe a little better than the rest.

Honestly, I want to see this case after a couple of months of use. Clear cases turn dull and yellowish with time. Pass!

Case required?

I'm fortunate enough to own the Nexus 5, have the Z1 on delivery and have this evening ordered the Note 3, which I intend to use as my main phone. I'm not a fan of cases, I'll be honest. However, as I'm sure you are all aware (and your wallets feel lighter), the note 3 isn't cheap. What would be the best case in terms of being he thinnest? Also, is the bezel surrounded the phone prone to chips easily? I can't make out from photos if its Chrome or Metallic?

I prefer the phone naked. It's too big and gorgeous to bulk up with any case to hide the design. I always keep my front right pants pocket empty, dedicated for the phone. During the week I also just slip it into my suit jacket inside pocket. I have had it for 2 months and it's spotless.

Same here. I much prefer the phone as it arrived rather than dressing it up with cases. What do you think of the build quality? For the money I've spent I hope its good quality. Specifically the bezel around the edge? I only have concerns as I've had bezels scratch up easily even with careful use. Cough Blackberry Cough

I've had cell phones for the last 15 years and have NEVER physically damaged a single one. I've had my Note 3 for a month or two, and the screen cracked straight across - looks like a samurai sliced it in half.
I didn't drop the phone or anything. It slid gently off my lap and down between the couch cushions, and somehow it broke. Maybe it cracked from pressure through the pillows from people sitting on either side?
I'm thinking either there was a defect (stress point or something) in my phone, or it's just a REALLY fragile phone.
It's a beautiful phone, but I suggest getting a case. After I have the screen replaced, I might try one of those glass screen protectors just to give the phone's glass more pressure-damage resistance.
You should look into the bear motion bumper on amazon for the note 3. the bezel of the screen is really weak. like really really weak. (at least compared to the note 2)

Just from normal use or your dropped your phone?
Had my Note 3 for two months with heaps of usage, even dropped on concrete once (no damage done), and there's no signs of damage to the silver, and it's just as shiny as the day it came out of the box.
I'm hesitant to believe that ^
I have some blemishes on the brim of the silver bezel just from applying a screen protector with a credit card (which I'm assuming scratched it)
i dropped my phone a few time, some at 5', the silver trim is pretty soft so it had a dent and 1 small chip in it. But other that that, it is surprisingly durable. Other people look at it and are surprised that I don't have a case on it
No case at all and got my Note 3 on January 10th and I have absolutely no signs of wear on the back or on the silver sides/rim area with 5-8 hours of screen time most days
dropped mine from 3 inches out of my jacket pocket on accident. HUGE gouges on corner silver area. Luckily since its soft its able to be sanded / polished. I used 1500 grit sandpaper and went to town on it. then polished with aluminium polish to refinish it . Still some deep scratches, but much better.

I've dropped mine a total of 5 times (3 on tiles and 2 on lino) and only have a few small nicks out of the paint. Luckily each time I dropped it, it landed screen up?. Camera lens is still scratch free aswell and I won't be case-less for much longer, slim armor on it's way.
Here's a couple of shots of the chip. I was using a macro lens to get close and one thing I noticed, there was quite a few micro scratches all around the rim. Even holding the device right up close to your face you couldn't see them but under magnification they're visible.
The OP in the linked thread has also done quite a number on his note, poor guy.

I just put a skinomi skin on it.
the difference between having a thin tpu case and nothing is staggering.
you wouldn't think it'd be much, but the phone feels and handles so much better without a case.
I dropped it one and the 'skin' picked up blemishes and there's a small crack in the tempered glass protector.
The actual screen was fine.
I threw mines out the 2nd floor Window and it survived......no really yea I don't believe what he said neither

When my phone hit the concrete it hit face-up, so the back cover took all the impact. No damage aside from a small mark on the back cover, which is easily replaceable anyway. Guess I'm just lucky, haha.

Weird question to ask, but is it worth risking your new expensive phone by not giving it some basic protection like a screen protector or thin case?
I mean, I get it, the Note 3 is great naked, but there's a reason why you should wear a helmet when you ride on a motorbike.

I had my Note 2 that didn't quite make it into my pocket, and landed on the side on concrete from about 3 feet up. Cracked the screen completely. When I got my Note 3, I armored it up. First with Otterbox, then with ZeroLemon battery (worth it, IMHO, due to the increased power availability and the case for about the same price as an otterbox). I like the feel of the otterbox, but the ZeroLemon power is definitely the driving factor in what I want.
All told, I will never have an uncased smartphone again, until they can make the glass and electronics shock proof to at least 40gs. Just my opinion.
Cheers,
B.D.
No case here and still in prestine condition. I do baby my phones and make sure my pockets are clean with no key or sand. The faux leather back really helps. I understand why people use cases. I just hate using cases.

I do plan on getting a case, and I've already got a tempered glass screen protector on the way, so I don't plan to run with a naked phone forever. I just like the way it feels without a case though.

Absolutely no drops ever, always in a car holder and always in a pocket with no keys and I have 8 pieces of Chrome missing. I'm am beyond pissed about it and for those that don't see it yet, I'm sure it will start happening to you unless I just got a defective phone
