Newbie planning to root - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I'm new here. I'm planning to root my Samsung Galaxy S III. Is there something I need to check or take note before proceeding? Everything in my device is in stock.
And by the way, do I need to root my device in order to flash stock/custom roms? Is there any differences between flashing updated stock roms and updating via software update? TIA

You need to read the basic stickied faqs and guides first.
Like backup EFS.
Why root when you dont know what its for ..?

You do not need root to flash stock roms whereas for custom ones yes.
Read the stickies for how tos, etc.

do it with Samsung Toolkit - its simple and quick and you dont have to install Kies, drivers etc...

flash siyah kernal via ODIN (or any kernal you like), then you can flash any custom rom you like via CWM recovery. The rom you wanna flash depends on what your looking for.
Ok.
Thx

You can flash siyah 4.1.5 from gokhanmoral. Com for galaxy s2
Then you are rooted. You will get CWM 6.0.
Then from recovery take back up of your current stock rom.
And flash any ICS Based custom rom.
Do these steps then in future you want to try JB custom rom then let me know

Wow, I'm amazed that you actually asked this question.
Seriously dude, learn what sticky threads and search button are before attempting to flash a device.

[Q][I9300][XXELLA]Best way to root?

Hello everyone,
I got my new S3 and would like to root it. I am looking for the easiest way to do so. Currently I would like to stay on stock firmware, but only rooted. There seems to be so many ways to root the I9300, so I am looking for suggestions from user who have rooted already.
My S3 info:
Model number: GT-I9300
Android version: 4.1.2
Baseband version:I9300XXELLA
Build number: JZO54K.I9300XXEMA2
This method seems the easiest: [GT-I930x/T/N][SHV-E210*][SHW-M440S] CF-Auto-Root
Thank you,
CF-Autoroot or CF-Root 6.5 depending if you want to have a custom recovery or not. Follow the guides and make sure to flash the correct file for your device!
PhilZ Or TWRP .

Although I would recommend changing the recovery that comes with the latter anyway as we can't guarantee it's SDS safe, which means may as well do CF_Autoroot.
Then as JJE says, flash Philz or TWRP
I used cf auto root then put cwm recovery on. XXEMC2 also have stock rom at the min

Great. Just need to change recovery to TWRP or Philz then you're done.

Philz is like CWM but with way more features.
TWRP is a completely different experience but equally as good. Both of these are safe from SDS (See sticky in general for Sudden Death)
CWM is nto SDS safe
Just read thay thread..and I do suffer feom random bouts of the phone restarting itself.but this is an issue I had on stock rom before root
Have noticed since root my clock widget forgets to update so I have to delete it and replace again on hoke screen
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
We're talking about recovery now not rom. If you stick with cwm, when you flash a rom - we cannot tell you you're safe from brick due to sds. Only twrp or philz we can say you're safe. We've advised you. Follow or ignore our advice, its your call but you have been warned.

after seeking out many rooting methods this seems the easiest http://forum.xda-developers.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=29347388 so here is my predicament the firmware is on ics and if i use this method can i go on to install jb roms without flashing basebands etc.. , i know it might be a silly question but with other devices i have had i had to unlock the bootloader howerver i understand its not required on gs2 ? also is there a easier rooting method? without using odin

Thanks, i flashed the new cwm that should have SDS fix
So i guess it should be fine to use the cf root and then just update the recovery, right? i mean there's not a big chance of sds on first recovery use

That's exactly the same as using cf auto root. So why not just use that?
Or just flash recovery if you don't need root. You don't need root if you're flashing a custom rom.

I guess the best thing is to check the main features of latest stable roms (based on stock firmware if you want all samsung features) and then try the ones you like the most..
I wanted to try android 4.3 and eliminate all the samsung (mostly useless for me) stuff, so i checked some threads in the forum and now i'm trying the supernexus 3 rom, it's pretty good, with not many customizations, but very lightweight..

If I am not wrong, there is and you can find it by Google or xda search as you are not the first asking it. The only thing you have to be aware of is that you won't get original state without wipe and reflash.
