I have to install citrix mobile connect to connect to the Exchange server at work, and citrix will not run on a rooted device
is there a way to overcome this or perhaps install a different app to receive exchange sync?
(for example will "hide root" work here)?
You can try voodoo rootkeeper that can perform a temporary unroot.

rooting does not delete data, whereas you never can be sure 100% that it will go as planned. Nevertheless there is not app that can backup 100% of your rom without root.
so i will take my chances :0)

If you rooted it correctly SuperSU or SuperUser should already be installed. Did you have any progress getting Citrix to work while rooted? Im in the same situation and I've only been able to get it to work briefly with Touchwiz based ROMs with SuperSU. All others give me a " cannot connect due to a security policy" error - even after disabling root and trying to re-enroll. Its a beast...

I have had to do the same...and all seems to work. But I had to also install two more apps enforced by policy; Lookout, and Touchdown.
Any ideas on what these do?
Touchdown is a great app for synching all your mails, notes and Exchange data.

Is there a way to install an apk as a system app? I want to 'unroot' a device but still run an app that requires root access. I'm unsure of how this can be done, any advise would be very much appreciated!

I know that the Z4 root app has an option for temp root functions which goes back to an unrooted state once you reboot.
My guess is that you can run that, place your apk in the appropriate system folder, install the apk from there & then reboot.
But again I'm not to sure if temp root functions work on our G-Tabs & if it does if it's as simple as I explained. Worth a try I guess.
Again I'm assuming that your not already in a permanent root state. If so then you'll have to unroot completely first & then try what I mentioned above.
Unless someone has an easier method?

Titanium Backup Pro (paid version 3.8.1 and higher) has a function that allows one to convert user apps-->system apps (as well as system app-->user app ... though this sometimes causes initial FCs, which generally disappear with reboot).
Not sure if the effect will remain after unrooting.
Just to clear up a bit, not because an app its on /system it will have root access. If you want to run an app that needs root, you need root, thats it. You cant unroot and use the app after that.
So, no you cant do that. Its 2 different things installing an app on /system than having root for an app.

So then how do proprietary apps like Sprint Nascar (as an example) run on an unrooted phone?

It probably doesn't or it might I have no idea. The op never pointed out which apps he wants to use.
However & this is a big however, as I have no idea which apps require root access, one has to assume that any of the preinstalled apps that come on our G-Tabs do in fact need root access, yet they can run on an unrooted device. Again I could be wrong.
That being said, how does one go about determining which apps require root access?
Thanks for the replies guys. The issue is supporting proxy servers on unrooted devices. There are several proxy apps that require root access as well as a kernel that supports proxy. If the proxy app were installed as a system app, would this have enough rights to access the kernel as required? I don't know enough about this but was led to believe this might work if it was running as system. Same for apps that use CIFS, like mount manager. I guess I'll give it a try and see what happens...!
Like I said, being installed on System doesnt have anything to do with having root or not.
Im 95% sure about what I am saying.
edit: I confirmed it..so 100% sure, if the app needs root, you will need root no matter where the app is installed.
So on my kindle i had everything installed to have the play store working and i got the play store to work and i got the youtube app to work. And so what happened was i deleted the youtube app and installed the newest version and when i opened youtube it gave me the google play services error, but the play store itself still worked.
So what i did was i uninstalled all the google account manager, google services frame work, etc.
And tried to fix the youtube issue by reinstalling all of those things. I started by installing google account manager, and then i rebooted it to install the next thing. Only, when it started up i could unlock the device, but none of the apps would load. So i did a stupid thing and factory reset it, which i think got rid of the root.
I have no idea what to do. I couldn't find any thread about this.
The notificaton bar works and the navigaton buttons show up on the side. So i can get to settings, but the carousel and home screen won't load after i unlock it

nevermind. so i followed the instructions and put the update into the internal storage folder but when i went into system updates on my kindle the box said "check now" instead of "update" so when i tap check now it says "last update failed".

Try to turn off wifi and reboot.
You should see that your device has found update, no more variants.
I'll try it again after school. What would I do next if I get the error again?
I have no idea. This is one variant. if tablet do not found update - this says about broken symlinks for example or something else that anyway do not fix without root.

I didn't really understand any of that. What is a broken symlink? And I don't think I'm rooted because I factory reset it.
Also, how could I check root status and what would be the purpose?
Okey. You not rooted now, so do not pay attention.
Your one method to get working device is update firmware.
In way that I described.
If you do not see "update" button after pulling file - sorry. no other idea.

I went back to the superuser app, it was indicated that root access has been granted.
Any way to solve this problem?
I have been having this same issue on rooted stock gs4. It's temperamental when it comes to root I've noticed. One day I was able to turn it app off of auto start and when I installed a new app it wouldn't let me do it and su says I'm granted
I'm experiencing the same issues. Auto Start Manager is the only feature that has this issue.

I always face this issue also, what I do as a temporary fix is, go to the SuperSU app, then "Forget" Clean Master, open Clean Master and try to disable an app from Auto starting, grant root and the app will be disabled I hope it works for you too
I am glad I am not the only one having this issue. I recently updated an app via the play store and clean master told me it was auto starting. I tried to block it, but it keeps telling me root access failed and to grant it. Well I've granted it root 18 times now and it still says root failed. I have tried everything to get it to work...clear logs, tell superSU to forget clean master, give it global default, etc. Nothing seems to work and it's pissing me off.
Unfortunately this does not work for me.
I have granted root access according to SuperSU Pro however when trying to stop autostarting apps in Clean Master it reminds me to allow access.
I even get a popup massage from SU stating that the app got granted root access.
Whats happening here? Does anyone have a work around?
Deleting Cleanmaster in SuperSU doesnt help. It is always the same unfortunately.

I too also have problems with the autostart function in Clean Master on my Optimus Zone II
First of all, if you've root then you shouldn't use clean master. That's so naive.
About the permissions. Even after root your system partition stays in read only mode. I'm guessing this okay. You should check that out first.

Ok, (I know Im gunna reget this), but why?, in your option, should Clean Master NOT be used, since it need so many "root" functions in order to work? Ive used it for years. Rooted or no, (mostly rooted), and why do all the "autostart" apks, (ROM Toolbox, Autostarts, Autostart Manager,etc) work just fine. I've tryied it with r-w on system on, sooooo....next...?

Has anyone figured out what the issue is here? It worked just fine on cm12 but stock Lilli nope. Root issues for sure it must have something to do with system partition. Has anyone fixed this issue?

Clean master is not working on 2.46(I mean the autostart manager) I noticed this yesterday..i flashed a new Rom first it was having Supersu 2.46 version in which CM was not working but after flashing Supersu 2.49 CM is working plus in Google store supersu 2.46 beta is there which won't work...my clean master started working again normally like before after installing SuperSU 2.49...so try flashing or installing supersu 2.49

Just go thru my above post..it will definitely work..so give it a try... flashing new supersu 2.49 resolved the problem for me.?
Yep its working again. I tried 2.48 cuz somebody said it worked for them, but i had no luck there. 2.49 did the trick, thx for letting us know in the thread.

I just rooted my s6 edge and was having the same issue with 2.46. Luckily when I updated to 2.49, I was unable to block the autostartup apps.

I have some basic questions about the security of rooted android devices. I'm running Cyanogenmod 11 actually on my SGS3. Of course I rooted it to install custom Recovery and ROM. So is there any possibility for an App to get Root Access without recognition?
I dont need the Root access anymore, I only wanted to install Cyanogenmod and thats it. What to do to fully unroot Cyanogen?
Another question:
If i have enabled "only install from trusted sources" am I safe? Or could there be sort of drive-by-downloads for example on this site sometimes i get the pop-up "your phone has (13) viruses, click ok ...".

You can't be unrooted and have CyanogenMod installed; that's an oxymoron. You can, of course, be unrooted without CM installed, but you can't have 'em both.

You're safe even without "only install from trusted sources" turned on. Just make sure not to install anything at all that you didn't specifically tell your device to install.

Unless you have an actual trojan or virus installed on your phone, your passwords are perfectly safe.
To check and make sure you're secure, download and install the avast! Mobile Security & Antivirus app from Google Play, and run a device scan.

If you're not already, you need to use a Super User app like SuperSU (the best one). It allows you to grant/deniy apps root access. If it asks to grant/deny permission to an app that you didn't install or isn't a function of CM, or simply don't want to grant root access, then deny it permission.
EDIT: As Nookie said, you can't accidentally install something even if you allow installations of apps that aren't from "trusted sources". If you do install apps from non "trusted sources", just be smart about it.
Hey guys! I'm new to this community so first of all I want to say hello to you all! Sadly my arrival is mostly based on a possible-problem for me.
So here's the situation:
1- Bad Guy runs an app on Good Guy's phone that asks for root access, this app is malicious and can be used to steal almost everything (like theftspy that was developed by a dev from xda)
2-Bad Guy grants it the access and sets SuperSU to "grant on demand" for this specific app. Then deletes all the logs of all this and removes this app from APPS tab of SuperSU.
3- Good Guy is completely unaware of all these.
4-A few weeks later Good Guy learns that this Bad Guy could have been installed an app on his phone that can steal sensitive information. He performs an Avast Mobile Security scan that returns clean and later performs a complete wipe of his phone and loads a new ROM.
So I'm the Good Guy here I confronted Mr. Bad Guy about it who ultimately denied that, but I got some strong suspicions that he might be lying. Data in the phone was private (mostly business) so even the probability of this being stolen is scary.
Without any further ado my question is: Can this malicious app keep onto its root access after a reboot (can any app do that)? Because if it can not, then even if it starts itself after boot, it'll have to grant root access again which would leave logs and would be seen on SuperSU this time, which neither was there so would mean I am safe. Also is Avast's scan result reliable on this basis?

Well, there are many root apps that run after system startup. It depends on the app that was installed on your phone.
If Mr.Bad removed app from SuperSU and deleted logs, that means the app isn't in use and will no longer do its work. That means, the app is just installed with no harm.
Also there was no need to change your ROM and factory reset. Just by uninstalling the app you'll be done.
Even, you scanned through AntiVirus and didn't found anything.
Stilling data from one phone and sending to other phone must need a medium to transmit data, in your case it must be internet. You could have check in Data Usage in Setting weather there is any anonymous app that is using your data.
Still there is probability, that your personal data must be stolen.
It depends on the duration between 'granted root permission to app and removing app from SuperSU list'
Also you said about 'grant on demand' its similar to 'prompt' was applied to the app in SuperSU.
Have you granted permission anytime? I yes them probably your data is stolen by Me.Bad.

I haven't granted any app root access. But Mr. Bad could have done it before I got my phone back. After starting to use my phone I rebooted it. I wonder if this app can start running with root access on its own after a reboot. Or should it get granted root access again by the user.
If so, then that'd be like NSA level coding / spying to avoid detection and still run after resetting.

If the app is setup such that it runs on startup and SuperSU is set as 'prompt' for that app, it must have asked user for granting permission after every reboot.

Whats more important is the permissions of that app. If it can claim sensitive permissions like access to contacts / messages / sdcard , then he can get that data even when the app doesn't have root access. And if the app has root access, then the damage could have been done already before he deleted the supersu logs. And no, it cannot be granted root access after the logs are deleted automatically on startup.

It is advised to reinstall the rom and protect superuser with some pin / password.

Once an app gets root granted and is in whitelist of superuser management app, then if such app can autostart on boot it can get root granted without user permission.
Eg: Firewall app.

True but if it is whitelisted on the Superuser management app then it is pretty easy to detect since it'll be listed there.
P.S:I assume you mean to be "set to "'grant on demand'" on SuperSU by "being whitelisted".
