[Q] Did I soft brick my AT&T Galaxy S2? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Last weekend I installed the JellyBAM ROM v7.6.2. Today, I decided to try overclocking. Following the galaxys2root guide, I downloaded and flashed the Zedomax OC Kernel using CWM Recovery. It was all going smoothly untill the reboot. It's stuck on the main boot screen with "Samsung Galaxy S-II," but nothing comes after, no matter how long I wait. If anybody has advise for me please tell me. Thanks a lot.

Do make sure yours is i777 and not i9100 first.

I know what version I'm running haha, I'm not that stupid. I fixed it by running cwm recovery and reinstalling the ROM from a folder i made in the external SD. The kernel deleted the original JellyBAM system files... it was a real sticky situation... As you can see in the signature It is fixed... Thanks anyways

Oh wow you literally did every possible thing wrong here. You used galaxys2root AND jellybam. Both off which are not supported around here.

I'm glad it works out. Bravo.
Also, I think you get the wrong idea of what Nick has said.
I have to agree with him and I strongly suggest us not to use Zedomax kernel and stay away from galaxys2root.com.

It's also not cool when people use stuff from other sites and then want people on xda to help fix their problems, meanwhile a quick search almost always lands good results.

I do know the responsibility in making this account and the rules that follow... galaxys2root didn't have the answer so I was hoping that the people on xda could help. I understand now they are not affiliated now but what I did not know was that JellyBAM wasn't either. I asked a question that solved itself, and I apologise for offending, annoying, and or breaking some rules. I needed help because I thought my phone was ruined, and I normally dont trust other sites. Everyone here knows what they are doing. By the way, I'm going to stop using galaxys2root... its unreliable... (to me)

I respect that. Nice to see you've stopped using that site, good luck and have fun flashing .

1st question. why wouldnt you follow the rules and make a nandroid backup? because if you did, you wouldnt be having this issue.
2nd question. why wouldnt you give the necessary information as to what you flashed and from where?
its almost impossible to help you out when you give no information. you also havent bricked your phone if you can turn it on still.
This is what happens when you put the cart before the horse.
More info on what you did so we can:

No, that won't work.
The rules of XDA are clear - Search before posting, never post before reading the FAQ.
Not flashing anything until you have done research is just plain common sense.
How to flash I9100 firmwares, and WHICH ones can be flashed, is covered in the FAQ topic. The original poster CLEARLY did not read the FAQ.
Assuming that you're still on the ICS ROM......it depends on what exactly you flashed but this could be the solution. Flash the correct modified kernel based on what base ICS ROM you flashed(if you don't know then look at settings->about phone). You will then need to flash a correct i777 modem as well(depends if it is Samsung or AOSP based). Without knowing more about what you flashed I can't really help you further.

Dont know what you're talking about, I cant ban people. If a person gets enough infractions then the higher ups ban people because they cant follow the rules. All infractions are looked at then double looked at, so if your friend got banned, then he deserved it.

I think you have the wrong attitude here. Yes, it's good to help people that KNOW how to help themselves. But when they blatantly ignore all the help already available they become more of a nuisance than any real development of this forum. I'm sorry If that seems a bit harsh. But this place was not started to spoon feed people that don't know what they are doing. It's been stated time and time again. This is NOT a help desk forum. EDIT... Just noticed your other thread asking the same thing. So I can understand the posts you got here, but since that was also one of the threads where I thought the answer was, your search for qualified assistance may require a bit more effort and politeness on your part, even if others are being rude.
Honestly, if you do a search and read a bit, like the forum rules say to do, before posting, you will find that this has been asked and well answered in another thread where name calling wasn't resorted to. Sorry I don't remember the answer, but I think it was just like flashing any other tab. Don't take that as a legit answer though because my memory fails often. I do know I have seen this asked and answered several other times though.
So for the best results do a search. Really, it works.

Why thank you good sir Benz
Then again, recovery mode has always been the straightforward thing to do, it's just timing, I did a little research on I/O edition to check for differences and it seems there is not much that's different, the recovery kickup is the same, Vol Down+ Power {When the device is off}, Then again, you shouldn't have USB plugged in when you do it as it conflicts with the key combo.
The thread I linked you describes the same method for kicking it into recovery, he is also an owner of an I/O series, I wish I had one to make it easier but sadly I can't see where your issue lies, but I am willing to stick by till you get this done right, Hope that helps.
Fitz
Thank u guys I really appreciate it..I tried the power + volume key with/without USB plugged in and all that pops up is the downloading mode and USB icon..like I said I've had many Samsung phones and never had a problem lol but I'll update u guys n thanks for the support

[Q] Noob to XDA Dev. Looking to see if I understand this right regarding ICS ROMs.

Hey guys! I've lurked around here for a while. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II for ATT a few months ago after being a longtime iPhone user. Therefore, I'm fairly new to the whole Android tweaking process. I want to install an ICS ROM onto my phone, particularly CM9. I've read the stickies, and am really trying to understand, but at the same time, do not wish to brick my phone. So could someone tell me if this is correct? Or where I'm wrong? Based on what I've read here, to install ICS, I need to...
1. Root my phone as outlined in the thread for that. (The one about not activating the yellow triangle. Since I'm on 2.3.6, I'll need to use "Odin3 One-Click Downloader".)
2. Backup my apps and texts and crap using Titanium Backup to my SD card.
3. Install the proper kernel (where do I find this?) using Mobile Odin.
4. Make sure CWM is active, backup NAND (I assume this is an option?) and flash CM9.
5. Flash Google Apps.
6. Restore my Ti backup.
Thanks guys for the help! And sorry if I'm being stupid/completely misunderstanding.
Read, useless thread is useless

Read, read and read some more. Do a search for Hellraiser as there are no true ICS ROMs for this phone yet, only i900 ports.
If you need to ask questions like this, you are not ready for ICS and ICS is not ready for you.
Since I9100 kernel source code has only been out for a week and we had a bunch of I777-specific **** to fix - while lots of progress has been made things are not quite working yet.
man some people are rude in here....
And others are lazy. Welcome to XDA.
There are a lot of different roms. Usually they rewrite the kernel within the install of the rom. But basically you have the right idea...

Facts are facts, loser. There is not yet a fully-functioning official ICS ROM released for the i777, so any talk of one is premature. The guy admits in the title of this thread that he is a noob and doesn't quite understand. These are exactly the people who should not be flashing ANYTHING, let alone a ROM that is not ready for primetime. But keep on encouraging him and others so that the forum gets filled with people needing help to fix what they messed up. I'm sure you'll be rewarded with tons of adulation for your efforts. Troll indeed.

If only it were this easy...the problem is that the people who use ROM manager are typically those who don't take time to do their research or read the forums before rooting (if they did, they would know better), so they probably won't see your much-needed warning until they brick their phones and come here for help...(sigh)

It is really getting ridiculous how many people post here after flashing their phone with ROM manager. I think they are outnumbering people from galaxys2root (it is a close competition). Isn't there a way do contact the dev of rom manager and have him make the app not run on the i777? At the very least he could post some kind of warning on the app.
Perhaps this needs an hourly bump.

If you're a noob the stickies are poison. If you are experienced they are your life

Not sure how many people on here are religious, but I saw this verse today from the English Good News Translation of the bible. I had just flashed Mystic's Glory onto my phone and wanted to try out a bible app and this was the second verse I saw. I had to laugh and thought it would be fitting to those who come here in haste:
Proverbs 19 verse 2
Enthusiasm without knowledge is not good; impatience will get you into trouble.

Did you like even try? We have rules he's that you're supposed to search before you post. Not to mention that I'm pretty sure that they say it in the OP.

When you say install cwm make sure you're also including the fact that cwm is built into our kernels so we don't have people using rom manager.

Then leave it STOCK!
Honestly, if you don't have a certain skillset, you should just accept it or learn it.

I'm sure there are rules about not being nice, too.
Nobody is born with the skillset you're talking about, everybody gotta start somewhere. If the OP bothers you so much just don't read it instead of taking the time to read all his post and trying to teach him a lesson.

Thanks for the necro with that worthless insight.
Nobody is born with the skill set? You're right. We all had to learn. But guess what? Someone has already blazed that trail and all you have to do is figure out how to read and comprehend.
Self proclamation of 'being a noob' or 'I'm not smart enough for that' is a worthless copout. Don't claim you don't understand it. Go and do something for yourself and learn it.

If you search you will learn how. Just search and read and read and read. Make sure you understand before you try. Google works. I didn't know anything before I started. I just searched and did a lot of reading.
