Just a very quick question.
Setup:
Unlocked I9300 16GB White on I9300XXEMC2 and rooted with CFTool.
Counter is at 1, naturally. This means that the phone wont check for OTAs. What Im wondering is if I use Triangleaway to clear it to 0 will the phone then check for OTA updates again(pretty sure it will) but more importantly is that safe with CFTool root still applied? Dont want to use triangleaway unnecessarily either as its risky.

Root means no ota updates if I am not wrong, you could get updates via kies though if firmware and csc are aligned. Updating will result in loss of root though.

The counter has nothing to do with it checking for ota, in settings under about phone it will say "modified" thats why it wont search for OTA updates.... ive never used kies so cant comment there, I just use XDA to get the most recent updates

Anything you flash to your phone should rightly be treated with caution, if you read and follow the guidance you shouldn't have any problems, but the warning is mainly for people who might not have read anything up to that point and flash the wrong file, bricking their Iphone.

Really its just convenient to not have to manually look and see if theres an update every few weeks.
Went ahead and gave TriangleAway a punt. It reset the counter alright but:

A factory reset will put the status back to normal mate or if you dont want to lose your data go back in triangle away and right at the bottom there is an option to put it to normal I think its called "allow tracker to run"
And make sure you have stock kernel and recovery

It depends on the bootloader version you have. If it was a JB bootloader (which means you were on JB before you rooted) then every reboot triggers the custom status if you have a custom recovery or kernel.
May I ask, why are you rooted? What I mean by that is - what are your actual requirements?
TB would be the number one reason, followed by the option to underclock and a few other apps that I wont mention here.
I updated to I9300XXEMC2 before rooting so yeah, it would be a JB Bootloader.

If you're using those sorts of functions anyway, I would suggest using CWM recovery to flash de-odexed custom touchwiz ROMs would be a better way. Sure, you have to check for updates manually and download to SD card, but you get the updates quicker this way and also you get better fixes than the official updates, that devs apply themselves and extra functionality.
That was my plan in a month or so, only just got the phone a week ago(free, sammy were dumping stock pre S4 release) so I'm giving stock a shot for a little while to then see what I want in a ROM. Likely go to CM10.1 first.

There are a lot of ROM's based on stock too though. There are definitely a lot of Samsung features I'd recommend you check out before going AOSP.
But as far as Stock (Touchwiz) custom ROMs, Wanam Lite is my favourite. Fast, stable and Lite. Good ROM.
Yeah, only ever used Touchwiz on the mothers S2 and for short periods. Not going to dump it until Im sure I wont use its features.

Even as a massive AOSP advocate, I stuck with Touchwiz from between May until only last month. Nearly a year
Only pressing thing is the low ram overhead sometimes(shame they didnt give us 2GB). Thanks for all the feedback anyways
If you use triangle away from the playstore it has a work aeound where it disables supersu for a few minutes at boot allowing you to check for OTA updates

Waiting for SU to return now so I can then disable the option and safely check for OTA(there wont be anything but just as a proof of concept).

Hey lads, two things that are bugging me, thought I'd be better put them here than a new thread:
Screenshots: Over compressed, look terrible, really bad banding at times
Menu capacative button: Activates all the time while typing with left hand, if I hit Y etc it opens the menu so I dont hit the key and instead open up a settings menu
No clear answers from googling, thoughts?

Basically looking for an update as to whether anyone has rooted without increasing the flash counter. I see people refering to a thread saying it roots without increasing the counter, but it says in the OP of that thread that it does increase flash counter (and that particular OP is extremely vague).
So just looking for an update from someone more experienced with Samsung phones and this flashcounter stuff. Thanks in advance.
+1. I just came from the epic 4g touch and over there the issue was resolved with a usb jig. Also ,i believe there was an app developed that would do it.

system root doesn't increase the flash counter, I have mine rooted, superuser and busybox installed , and 0 in my flash counter.

As I said I am new to the whole Odin thing. I was under the impression flashing anything with Odin would increase the counter, this is not the case? What does increase the counter then?
If you want root and not increase flash counter use that method @roloracer mentions. That's what I used and it was easy.

is not odin that increases the flash counter, cause if samsung would release an update and you wanted to flash from the pc and not from ota update , it wouldn't increase the flash counter, custom kernels/roms/recoveries do , but for some reason the system root doesn't, I still haven't decided if I'm going to say screw the counter, I probably would have if there was more roms to try out, but I'm going to be patient until a stable cm7 or ics rom is out.

nothing except you can't overclock past the 1.5ghz since you still have the stock kernel, but you can use any rooting app, and use setcpu with a performance scaling to throttle the cpu to the max or lower it to save battery. Once you use a custom kernel the flash counter will trip.

yes from what DA_G said there's no point in the development for it until ics is out, so I don't expect the flash counter fix to be available till samsung releases ics update.

why not for gingerbread? since i mean it is the current one right now
i really want to flash a rom for spead tweaks and stuff, but seems like flash counter will increase with that
so so far im rooted, flash counter still at zero

I don't have an answer for that, you might have to ask DA_G for that answer, there the ones developing it, not sure why.

I believe it's because of an existing app (Triangle Away Thread) that works to remove the counter on ICS. DA_G refers to it here (post 49): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218&page=5
Question related to this topic: I couldn't wait...lol. Flashed the oc kernel through Odin and, of course, my flash count went up. IF I decide to return this phone, do the employees at best buy mobile check the flash count? I know how to restore it to stock so that won't be a problem but we can't reset that flash counter. Anyone have any input?

I think thats what im going to do. My gnote should be here tomorrow and i was going to root right away but there really isnt much point for me at this point with roms to install.

No way. Some guy in another thread said people return phones with CM7 installed. Inside your return window and they don't care.

Here's what I'd like to do:
Root my phone and go to ICS. However, if I ever have a problem, I want to be able to get the phone back to stock, so my warranty is still good. So, do I root with mashi's method or do I just root with any method and use the reset counter (linked on here somewhere)?
Since I want to install ICS is there any reason to care about the counter and will the reset counter work after installing ICS if I have to go back to stock?
Do I still get the ICS update from AT&T when it comes out? Or is this like jailbreaking (something I'm VERY familiar with), and you just wait until someone comes up with a new custom ROM that has the Suite.
I know these are a lot of questions, but it's all stuff I'm currently researching, and it's not apparent what's the right thing to do (mostly due to this all being kind of new....some of the threads on here are only a month or so old). Anyway, my goal is to get to ICS and be able to get to stock if I ever have to with the least risk possible.

i have followed entropy512's thread here to get my at&t samsung galaxy s2 rooted with stock settings...i then wanted clockworkmod recovery so i went to this and followed directions to get everything installed...everything was ok and working until a few weeks ago when the 'Check Update' option under Setting stopped working...
basically what happens is when i goto Settings-> Software Update->Check for updates->Hit OK (Check the AT&T server for new software update?) a dialog comes up that says 'Checking for software updates...' and nothing happens...i have left the phone over night with device management app checking for software updates... when this used to work, it took less than 1 minute to check...
finally, the only way for me to stop this is to go and force stop Device Manager under Applications->All, so before i restore the phone to factory, i was wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue here?

umm this option was working until a few weeks ago and it randomly stopped so im not sure what rooting has to do with it...furthermore, i did search using various permutations of words around the issue at hand, and i did not find threads that addressed this issue...

Being rooted you shouldn't even worry about updates, if you had actually searched you would have seen that

OTA updates require factory recovery. I'm a bit hazy on the details but I believe CWM, in short, replaces that.
It might also be because you either turned off/uninstalled or inadvertently removed factory bloatware.

This. Amongst other things. If u insist on trying to eventually upgrade to whatever crap gets pushed out to us yer best bet is to do a full wipe to completely stock firmware.

once again, the issue is not weather i should worry about updates or not nor did i search for if i should worry about updates...this option was working and something happened that caused it to stop working...and my searches i did was around getting device management to connect to the dm server (which is where the 'Checking for update' got stuck)

both of you seem to be spot on...i didnt realize that removing bloatware which was marked as 'ok to remove' on the document of things to remove safely could have been the issue...initially i had frozen them using titanium...neway i restored the phone using the CWM backup i had and the option started working like expected...thanks for the input

Do you recall all the issues with UCKK6 Gingerbread? That was an AT&T release. The devs had to tear it apart to debug and try to fix it. Any build will have bugs in it. But generally, custom firmwares will have fewer bugs than AT&T firmware.

unfortunately, i joined the android bandwagon only when i got my samsung galaxy s2, which was a little late in the game, so i have no clue on all the start up issues that people experienced with Gingerbread release...
for now ill need to stick with stock/At&T firmware however ill make the switch to custom firmwares when i stop being lazy and create a USB jig for myself...

Why would you need a jig? You're already rooted with CWM.

I've been running AOKP by Task for a while and have never had a serious issue. The one's I have had were self inflicted and with some reading were quite easy to fix.

if my research that i conducted a while ago is right, then basically samsung has implemented a flash counter which increments each time you flash a custom, non-stock rom...it might also be applied to non-stock kernels/firmwares as well (im not too sure)...so to prevent the flash counter from ever incrementing, ill need to put the phone in download mode using the jig and continue from there...

This is wrong. It is only incremented when you use ODIN to flash nonstock items. CWM has no bearing on flash counters.

You have some bad information...but I have some good news for you.
The flash counter only counts the number of times you've flashed a custom kernel in download mode via Odin. Using CWM to flash anything can't touch the flash counter. Same goes for Mobile Odin. I've been rooted and flashing for months, I don't have a jig, and my counter is still at zero.

Any GB issues only surfaced if you updated to 2.3.6. 2.3.4 for a "stock" firmware was pretty awesome. I'm on the latest ICS leak from ATT (LD4) and aside from the emmc bug (I'm using a safe kernel so I don't have it) IMHO its more complete then CM9 was. I stopped using CM9 at the end of May and don't miss it at all now.

alright well i learnt something new today...and now that i have the freedom to flash like a mad man without worrying about flash counter (via CWM), i will surely checkout some of the leaked versions of ICS that you guys are using, and see which one works best for me...thanks for all the new info

I reccomend roms that use i9100 bases as they are usually better, roms like phonebricker, and shostock2 are good, my favorite touchwiz based rom though is serendipity 9. But thats my experiences so try them for yourself (i use aokp as my daily though.)

2. restart, install Triangle Away and reset the flash counter back
I just want to have root.
So, the question is, why I'm getting "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"

Thats right.
But if youre on xda why do you want the OTA update anymore? Just flash a stock rom, update via odin as and when a new stock rom is available and root each time.

Thats a question that I was about to ask. . I'm having a few problems with my S3, and I want to correct them but I need root.
I also want to keep it stock, I was a flash addicted with my previous phone, but now I don't have time and I just want something that works, and I want also to be able to check for updates. .

As I understood, you won't get OTA updates if rooted whereas you can get updates via kies. Flashing them will remove root though.

I'm coming from Galaxy S1, to S2 and now S3, and Samsung is not the same anymore for me, They really listen to the customer, and always improve their UI and apps. S3 is a solution/improvement for all S2 n S1 complaints.
So, it is really nice to see some app/mod which originate from here at first, been integrate to stock rom of s3 e.g. the toggle, n the lack of led light of s2 n s1
Btw, development means, to make something unusable to become usable,, to make something good to be better.
I think, it is really convenience to just have OTA instead need to find a PC just to hv update.
As my S2, i gain root just by flashing temp CWM recovery through stock 3e recovery n then flash root. It simple as that.

So what exactly is the cause for cannot have OTA update. Is it because su binary in system/app or something else..

I guess it is the device status "modified". If I understood well you can only get "original" when you flash a stock rom and unroot but please correct me if I am wrong as I never went back to original state till now.

Yes you are correct, if your phone is rooted it'll show modified no matter what you do.

just how often do you think an OTA update is pushed out?
Just use mobile odin if you want to flash any stock roms without needing a pc. Youll get the update far quicker via xda/sammobile than waiting for an OTA one anyway
I've been trying hard to find the answer and I just can't - I searched these threads for a while.
I currently have Galaxy S4 with MDK which is rooted and has the unlocked bootloader.
I have SDM and SEAndroid frozen on Titanium Backup.
I want to un-freeze those and upgrade to the newest version but still keep my root and all of my root apps. I don't care about the unlocked bootloader - all the root apps I use don't have anything to do with using the bootloader (well I have twrp installed but don't use it).
Can I use OTA Rootkeeper, unfreeze SDM and SEAndroid and take the OTA update? Will I still have root access (again remember, I don't need to have unlocked bootloader)?
I ask because I'm very happy with everything on my phone the way it is - I like where my apps are, I like everything. I don't want to bother flashing roms - I just have no interest. I want to do the update and have everything the way it was and all my folders in their place (less the unlocked bootloader) and still have root for my programs like Titanium Backup and Greenify. super su - etc.
Please - any help would be appreciated.
Afaik, taking the update will ineed cost you your current root. However, I am on stock 4.3 and root using vroot and then used a script to uninstall the foreighn superuser app and add supersu. I have experienced no ill effects as of yet, though some would say that they aren't comfortable using this root method. There is no evidence to support it being entirely safe nor malicious in intent. It does provide root and you can keep all your apps data. Though...if you take the update, I would strongly suggest a factory reset to decrease potential problems...just my 2 cents buddy

The bootloader is technically only bypassed through a Loki exploit, not unlocked.
For all intents & purposes that doesn't change anything to most users so I don't know what Richii was trying to get at.

I read it clearly, you said you had an "unlocked" bootloader so I was curious on what process you used to unlock it.

I have an MDK so I don't need it. But please do someone a favor, don't kill that MDK S4. Either just flash a rooted 4.3 that was designed for your MDK device, or sell it to someone so they have the opportunity to play with it. There are a ton of people on this forum stuck on the newer versions that would kill to get what you have.

I won't kill it if I knew how to upgrade stock rom without losing my apps and data - lol. That's really my problem. Looks like there's a stock rom here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517611 - but there are so many files there. I have no idea what to do or which one to download? I don't know what Loki'd Kernel is or Aroma installer, deodexed, etc etc (and I don't have the time) - I just want to upgrade and keep my apps and data the way they are - lol. If after I upgrade it's no good - I'll go back to my backup.
I have MDK with TWRP installed.

Backup your apps & data using TiBu, then flash a stock 4.3 rom.

I can walk you through the steps of flashing a ROM buddy, just PM me. I'll look around for a good 4.3 but it would be preferable for you to find a ROM that suits your needs. There are definitely a couple 4.3 options available, check 'em out and let me know if you want to proceed.
After updating to I9205XXUCML1_I9205OXXCML2_I9205XXUCML1_HOME I can't root anymore unless I install a custom rom, are there any pre-rooted stock roms?
If not which PDA from SamMobile is rootable?

As I am afraid your counter of unofficial installation is tipped to 1 and you are already void your warranty, maybe try a shoot for it. Anyway if you want to stay with new ROM it will be sensible to made factory reset of your phone and installing on it newest ROM once more, but this time through Odin from your PC. Lets read about how to use Odin (there are several threads on forum) and download from Sammobile newest, not branded ROM. In this manner you can make fresh start. Then if you dare you can try to root it using method from link above.
Me I am very careful about upgrades and do not decided to flash in blind newest ROMs when they arrive... and all for better, because new ROMs comes with new bootloader (which prevent to downgrade to previous versions and when you try you can brick your phone) and with dreadful KNOX... Now i will wait at least for KitKat to upgrade.
