Weather Station app uses the 3 fancy sensors of the S4 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Themes and Apps

So even though there's a post about this app in the international S4 Themes and Apps section, I decided to make a new one here with my findings on the Weather Station app that utilizes the thermometer, barometer, and hygrometer sensors found in the S4. I was showing off the device the other day and remembered that it had those sensors, so I quickly searched for this app, downloaded it, and had to keep reminding the people I was with that this wasn't network data it was polling, it was actual sensor data found right from the device! Pretty cool stuff.... it gets better though!
I have a pretty awesome desktop weather station that displays indoor and outdoor temp and relative humidity, and decided to compare findings - obviously, I'm not trying to claim that either one is 100% accurate, just wanted to compare between the two. Here are my results:

Note the labels above and below the desktop weather station to designate the outdoor and indoor sensors (there is a physical, wireless sensor outside the house that transmits the temp and RH to this station, so this too doesn't poll network data just like the S4 does not). While holding it for a few seconds to get a good, focused shot with my point-and-shoot Samsung CL65, the temp went up on the S4, pictured left, with the Weather Station app running, giving me temp, pressure, and relative humidity in my preferred units of measure. Pretty good, huh?
If you're wondering, yes, I live in FL, and yes, outdoor RH is always crazy high! By the way.... How crazy is it that my PHONE has more sensors than this singular purpose desktop weather station? If you're looking for the best place to get this desktop weather station I have, try Sam's Club.

I got on the play store and when I searched bweather station it brought up several different ones. What developer is it?

Sweet app thanks!

I agree ... good find.
How come Samsung didn't include an app like this by default? Or am I missing it?

YIKES, that's a long way to go just to get 2 of the 3 sensors displayed on a pretty looking screen! Definitely prefer this app over that, but thanks, didn't notice that before while using S Health!

I didn't even realize I posted in the international S4 forum... I thought it was just the general forum for the S4. The app isn't carrier specific so I guess that's the place to have it? Anyways thank you for your insightful post!

Is the temp the ambient air temp or the device temp? Mine is always hovering around 81-82 degrees and I know the room I'm in is a lot less than that.
I also checked on the S-Health app and it shows the same temp. Is there anyway to calibrate it? It just seems a bit off.

It is "ambient temperature," used it quotes because if it's in your pocket or your hands for long, the temp may be off for those reasons.... But as you see from my "test," it is pretty accurate all things considered!

There's also WeatherSignal (by opensignal.com) in the Play Store, with Temp, Pressure, Humidity, Light level, Acceleration and Magnetic Flux.

Nice. Is that your first attempt or after fiddling around and getting used to it? How's the precision for that? Do you think you'll get better/more used to it with time or is it now just a matter of seeing in what direction the creative juices decide to flow?

1) use the scribble function on a blank screen...
2) load a completely white (or other colour should you so wish) image into the album...

I'll let the artists in the community confirm, but i get at least two levels of pressure sensitivity with the pencil, marker, pen and brush. Most noticeable with the brush in my opinion.

I found the pressure sensitivity better with the brush, marker and highlighter...the other pens less unless using a bigger tip. It is smooth after you get the hang of it. I have more drawings I'll post later today, some mine and some of my friends. Wanted to get an all around feel for the drawing ability of the flyer.
Now to nag HTC about adding an inking app coupled with software to detect pressure sensitivity a lot better =P
I contacted HTC about pressure sensitivity and palm rejection done through the stylus and this is what they said

Got it on opening day and been doodleing on it as much as I can. I really like the pencil tool and the brush tool. Fantastic little tablet for quick sketches.
I really hope that sketchbook mobile implements the pen feature in one of their updates. I would love if that program worked with the pen.
Will post my art soon (need to post a few times to allow my links)
I'd like a real design type app like sketchbook to adopt the pen integration also.

[MOD] SuperCurio's Voodoo Screen Tune

I was browsing the SGSII i9000 dev threads and found this little jem, which is now supported on the i777. What this will do is enable you to be able to get rid of Sammy's nasty contrast settings and fix banding, which it does beautifully.
All credit's go to supercurio!
You can also download it in market as Voodooscreentuning.
*after doing this and adding the roboto font, I got to say i'm very pleased with the way the SGSII looks. I've been a little upset about the way it was calibrated. Never understood why devices don't come professionally calibrated, tv's out of the box for the matter as well. I suppose they want to exaggerate color saturation , contrast and what not to give it that "pop".
Here is the link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241590
and to thank supercurio, I will honor him like this kid did in memory of steve jobs by shaving your face into my head!

Really? Wow, it's clear as night and day. I'm running unnamed too. When you use the app you can see right there that the gradient is all banded looking while on samsung settings, it is totally obvious when you switch to native.

I did notice that, but I also noticed the sharpness on pictures seemed to have blurred. That may just be a by product to fix the banding. I'm no screen calibrator.
exactly when you watch movies you will notice that their is no more artifacts, because when you artificially add/enhance contrast/sharpness you create noise it becomes apparent when you are watching movies on your phone. So what you see now is a calibrated native experience. I do graphic design and invested a lot of money on sensors to calibrate my monitor and TVs. It makes a world of difference when you get it right. I notice it most when watching a scene where there is a lot of shadows, the blacks don't crush out all the dark grays.

That's something I never really noticed in the first place with movies. Everything just looked crisp.
The app is cool, but I would like a little more control as opposed to 2 buttons. Know what i mean? At any rate, it's free, and you can NEVER hate on free
I agree, more options is probably the one common denominator we share. From his thread this is going to be "huge". That little app took him 4 months of calibrations so I think he is going in the right directions. Curio is the most OCD person I have ever met, which is a good thing in this case! LOL
* I did notice when i got the phone that things looked a little cartoonie! I was still flattered with the screen. I love how everything is a little more natural to the eye.
FYI for those using CM7 on the AT&T SGS2: support will be coming later next week for our device name. Right now it will show as "model not recognized" when you try and run it.
This app is nice. Kudos to SuperCurio

ok I went to a picture in the gallery and I can see some fine adjustment to picture. when you put it in native and close the ap does it stay in native or you have to keep the ap open?
I think it sticks. I just rebooted and it looks like it's still working.
Just because I think Curio, should get all the respect he deserves for his OCD. I am going to shave his face into my head like this kid did in respect for steve jobs!

If you dont notice anything then you really don't need the app. It works you just aren't that particular about the calibration. SOme people are some people are not.

You are correct. I think it's a pretty neat idea. The only other device that I know of that utilizes a barometer to corresponds with the GPS is the Samsung Galaxy Note.
Most GPS units (like tom tom, garmin) have a Barometer built in specifically for more accurate signal lock, but it is yet another sensor that is going to take up clock cycles and battery.
@jamesnmandy - what do you use it for?

Big deal if it takes up a small amount more battery and clock cycles as long as I have better GPS signal.
By the way I am very impressed with the GPS's reliability with this phone compared to previous phones. Well done Samsung.

Tips for getting better pictures with the G2

I know that the camera is decent. Heck look at this guy's album on Google+
https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/+LukasFrimerTholander/albums/5945766779380687681?sort=1
No matter how hard I try, the pictures I take, almost always look washed out. In most of the reviews the camera was praised for colour accuracy and reproduction. I'm not talking about perfectly lit scenarios but more or less like the ones I've posted above. Do you guys leave yours at Auto , Intelligent Auto etc. Whatever tips and tricks you can share I'm sure will greatly benefit the community.
[I know there is a thread regarding the slow shutter and focus but that's not the point over here.]
Cheers !
Mine look as good if not better. I use AI most, normal and manual otherwise. Focus isn't slow for me, shutter speed regarding moving items in less than full blast light are and get blurry easy. Software fixes needed. My still shots are incredibly brilliant and accurate for a smartphone camera.

I personally feel on the stock camera app , the auto ISO is a little bit too sensitive, causing unnecessary noise. I usually set the ISO to 800 (the max it allows in manual control) and the shot turns out significantly better.
Using IA pictures are somewhat better ! . BTW can someone modify the camera to save the settings ? because it always starts on Normal mode !
I used Intelligent Auto for the pics of my Spigen Case, seems to have worked well.
These pics are actually lower quality than the ones on my computer because there was probably some compression done during uploading/
Does anyone know of a way to make the IA setting stick? Every time I leave the camera app I have to mess with settings to get it back. I've tried just hitting the home button and leaving the app open but it reverts. Annoying! !

I bought this one: http://amzn.com/B00KZ9G8TS
It has it's issues but works.
1. The top often occludes the proximity detector causing it to "black screen" (fix - modify the band or use xposed to modify the proximity software)
2. Like most armbands, the clear material isn't very sensitive.
3. The neoprene slides around unless you make it tight.
4. The key holder is too small for my subaru key.
Pros?
1. It's made specifically for the G3 - the size is right and the earphone holes are in the right place.
2. It's pretty comfortable
3. Uh ... it works?
All in all, my experience has been mixed. The whole thing works, but the G3 is a pretty damn big thing to have bouncing on your arm. My gf and I were joking that it would be better as a WRIST band, where it'd look like I was using a wrist-band tricorder or something...
Im using the one below. Perfect fit and holes line almost good. Bud you cant go wrong for 7$ bugs free shipping. Shipping arround two weeks to canada. USA most likely little over a week

I put my house key in mine and run to the park where i run but I know it certainly wouldn't fit most car keys, especially Subaru.
I agree the fitment is pretty solid, the G3 is a large device to wear on your arm. I might need new headphones and I am having some issues with my TripleFi 10s
