[Q] Rooted Note 2 Can't OTA Update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I just purchased a Note 2 on Swappa. The phone was rooted when I got it but running a stock ROM. I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus running CM10.1 and I got to say, I do miss a lot from that ROM but I want to give this stock ROM a shot for a while mainly because I want to see if all the Samsung S-Pen apps are something that I will use. From what I understand, these will not be available to me on a custom ROM.
My question is if I load CM10.1, what will my S-Pen functionality be? Are there alternative apps like the Samsung ones for S-Pens? Will the S-Pen even work on CM10.1?
Thanks all!

There are TW ROMs and aosp ROMs. The TW ROMs leave the s-pen functions intact, the aosp ROMs don't have most of the s-pen functions, though I've read there are apps to get some of them back.

Papyrus is 1.

Basically all the spen is is a stylus on aosp but like what has been said papyrus is great for note maybe better than snote, gmd spen control lets you do all the gestures and ANY other gesture you like ive been running aosp for months and prolly wont ever go back to tw....although i really miss multi window, its sick but id rather have my aosp but to each there own make a backup abd try them all out and see what you like...at first i though all the tw goodies were awsome which they are but i rarely ever used them

hey guys, i have the same problem. i am not able to get OTA updatees! do u think its because i am rooted?
my flash counter is 1, I have TWRP though i flashed stock recovery and it didnt work as well?
btw i am doing all this because i want to reset my flash counter to 0 because i just got allshare cast dongle. anyway is there a way to reset the flash counter to 0. btw, i am already using triangle away and for some reason my T-mobile galaxy note 2 stuck at counter 1.
Can you guys please help. i am running out of options. i tried many many things and all the doors slamming on face.
Thanks in advance,

if i flash stock rom would that reset my flash counter to 0? also wanted to know if flashing stock rom would that flash stock recovery as well? currently i have TWRP should i flash stock recovery first before flashing stock rom? I am hopping to flash stock rom without the need to remove TWRP.

i will say it again...flash beans stock rooted vramc3 from twrp recovery.
.zip roms do not replace recovery, only stock odin images do that. also you can do this as a secondary option.

Flashing back to stock

I couldn't seem to find the answer to this searching the forums. do I need to use odin to flash back to stock? or can I just flash the stock rom via custom recovery? I apologize if this has been answered but like I said I could not find the answer.
thanks
Joe
Top thread in the Development section.

I read through that thread... the question I have is if its possible to flash with using custom recovery or must i use odin to flash the stock rom... That thread just tells you how to use Odin ...
You could flash a stock ROM, but it will still be rooted. The only way to fully go back to stock is to use Odin and then Triangle Away.
thanks!! that was all i wanted to know. i still want to be rooted but thinking of going back to stock rom... i have tried a few roms and don't seem to get great battery life as i did with stock. I love CM 10 but I use the s-note feature constantly throughout the day and miss having it.

There's lots of cool ROM's similar to stock such as Clean, Tweaked, JellyButter, and Beans. If you want to retain stock features use touchwiz ROM's not AOSP ones such as CM.
If you click the link in my sig, there's a list of all ROM's for our phone, separated into Touchwiz and AOSP categories. If you just want a rooted stock ROM, use the one called "Stock/Root/DeOdex SCH-I605VRAMC3".

Use GMD s-pen control ( paid app but worth it) and papyrus. That's what I use and it works perfectly. You lose the ability to do math problems with s-note, but you gain customization and gestures. Works quite well together IMO.

Just use recovery to flash a stock rom...beans has a stock vramc3 .zip rom posted in the dev section. Going back to stock via Odin is only needed if you are returning the device or soft bricked.
cool... Thanks everyone for the help. I have been messing with android phones forever but have had a hard time finding the best rom for the note. i will play around a little more tonight and see what one I like best before i go back to stock rom. I liked the jelly bean rom but there were a couple of bugs that i couldn't get past. i never got liquid to flash correctly.

[Q] i think my phone bricked.. help me😭

i have verizon galaxy note 2 and i flash dn3 rom but i decide to restore to stock rom cause i cant use unlock feature on dn3 rom...so i used odin to flash with stock rom...and here's problem..after odin show pass with green, my phone in looping in verizon logo..so i tried to do flash again odin show fail message and phone doesnt boot.. samsubgng logo poped up and go away like flashing..
i cant even enter to recovery mode..
i could enter to download mode but odin give me fail message...
what should i do...
Try using the .pit file also in Odin with whatever stock rom? your using hopefully it's not a 4.3 stock rom or you will be locked out from anything custom...
Once you have a custom recovery and using custom roms you shouldn't us Odin or Casuals unlock & root method ever again unless you have problems with recovery bootloops or radio etc...
I didn't understand what you meant when you said dn3 rom didn't have "unlock feature"
I've never heard of dn3 rom but I will go look.

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH OffTheChainz and Bonkurei!!!!
i found and use .pit file and my phone came back to normal...thank you !!!!!!!
and btw...if i unlock the bootloader once is this unlock goes to permanent?
@corean0213
Use this method and r515 build shared here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2272066 Thanks to AdamOutler
I didn't have any luck with the newer builds working. Take your time be patient if you run into problems after trying multiple times you can always revert back with your pit and stock rom. Keep that handy for emergency.
Once you get TWRP recovery with Casual your golden.
I suggest trying Alliance Rom build 25 if you like custom everything, like myself or give OhTrent Rom if you want something very sweet and simple for your Note 2! Other people might recommend something else....
Glad we was able to help!

[Q] a question about surge's upgrade method

Hello guys,
Instead of flashing the near stock 4.4.2 ROM and then using Odin to flash CSc and ap, could I flash a 4.4.2 ROM like eclipse and then flash stuff in Odin?

If I'm not mistaken it has to have a compatible custom kernel first. I would be interested in knowing for sure too. I know little about MDK but would like to learn enough to 1. not brick it, 2. not lose MDK and the loki exploit. Is there a thread dealing just with MDK? What to do and not to do for a noob?

nope, I'm talking about the mk2 to nc5 method from surge. I'm wondering if I have to flash the 4.4.2 ROM within the thread, or if I could flash another 4.4.2 ROM.

Anyone running a build beyond MDK has Kernel Lock and the ROMs that users can flash are using the stock kernel... There were a few instances where the kernel was lightly modified but nothing big.... I'm not 100% about the OPs question though myself since I'm in fact on MDK...
As far as what to know for MDK... The two biggest things to remember are to NEVER take an OTA while on Stock MDK Touchwiz and to NEVER use any other Odin file other than MDK... Other than those two things anything else is pretty much fair game.
You need to just root stock MDK with Motochopper then once it's rooted freeze SDM with TiBu then I suggest using Flashify to install your recovery of choice.
Once those 3 steps are done.... Make a backup of stock MDK and your into flashing !
You won't " lose" your Loki'd MDK if you do those steps before anything else whenever coming from stock via Odin.
Other than possibly flashing a bad download ROM zip or something... The only other issue I've ever ran into was flashing a kernel that didn't have the Loki patch. That will send you to the " Unauthorized Software Detected" screen at boot. Even then no worries since you can hop back into recovery and restore or try again. For situations like that someone made up the Loki Doki zip that you can flash say after flashing the Alucard Kernel. which is meant for the i9505 S4 and that will Lokify it for you.
Good practice would to be just flash either KToonsez Kernel or Alucard Kernel ( + Loki Doki with Alucard ) if you're flashing a ROM you're not to sure about.
All AOSP roms that are for " JFLTE" can detect they our bootloader requires the Loki Patch and it will take care of that during the flash automatically.
If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a PM or ask here... Never a problem

MisterTac, thanks for the super response. Lots of people would just say, "read up on it". I've got a couple of dumb questions. Can you flash virtually any Verizon rom? I have a hard time distinguishing between roms if it doesn't say specifically that it is for MDK. Another question is if you can't flash kernels, what exactly makes the MDK so much better than being on Safestrap (especially with all the roms Gigilie has ported)? One more thing, in your opinion what are the top five or so best roms that you can run with an MDK that you can't on Safestrap. I know you aren't really supposed to ask about best roms but I wanted to see what the difference was. Do you have to flash via odin or can you just install via recovery?

You can most of the time flash any Verizon ROM whether it's for SafeStrap or MDK. Jrkruse also has a patch so that you can flash just about any i9505 Touchwiz ROM as well. And for AOSP ROMs like Cyanogen or Slim or the 100 other ROMs based off those you're good to flash any of them since most of them are Unified JFLTE builds that are for all LTE S4's on any carrier.
MDK is " better " or more flexible in that we can flash Custom Kernels. SafeStrap you cannot as of now. That gives you way more control over your phone. SafeStrap also only has a couple AOSP ROMs that somehow are working with it.... Where again... Our MDK ones can easily flash aosp ROMs without issue.
All these ROMs are going to be flashed through your custom recovery... Twrp or CWM. And I suggest using Flashify to install your custom recovery.
My top picks for stability and features that work best for me are currently SlimSaberKat, Mahdi, Liquid Smooth, C ROM and OSE. You're right there is no Best ROM... You'll have to just try them on your own but I'll edit this post with a couple links to these ROMs for you...

Well I guess technically you could although I don't see why anyone would want to other than using it for ROM slots yes.
I haven't ran into anyone on here I don't think either with a Verizon or ATT S4 that could run a true Custom Recovery and opted for SafeStrap.
In CWM I can wipe my current ROM and restore a backup I've made in like 2 minutes tops... so the space you'd potentially lose on your internal memory having multiple ROMs loaded with SafeStrap really isn't worth it when in 2 minutes you can just wipe and restore ya know? Just my opinion

Just flash in recovery like any other zip. Here is Philz Touch CWM .
https://www.dropbox.com/s/odxykfc1dch3d7a/philz_touch_6.48.4-jflte.zip
Flash that then reboot to recovery from within your current TWRP and you'll have your CWM.
If you want just regular CWM you could use Flashify from the play store. Philz is the same thing but has few more options and in my opinion why not have more right?

Rooted VRUFNK1-So now what?

Hello all. I just recently picked up a Verizon Galaxy S4 to upgrade from my S3. Seems I fell into the bootstrap pit again. Now that I have this thing rooted (changed the kernel via an odin flash, rooted it, moved back to the regular kernel)-where do I go from here? I take it I would have to load safestrap and run touchwiz, Jelly Bean roms? Would I be able to use this flashfire I've been reading about and take it up to a lollipop rom?
Not any good

That's a good question . I found out that the partitions are write protected any way so you can't flash roms . what good is it to root? Oh I changed my startup animation . WOW

Well safestrap works around that. Y ou can load roms that are designed to work with safestrap but I've read a few things about flashfire so I was wondering if anybody could provide some comments on that.

Now I've gone and done it.

Hey guys. I just got my hands on a Verizon Note 2 this weekend and have managed to screw it up already. I am coming from the world of unlocked bootloaders with some background in Samsungs shenanigans. Anyway, I think I was on 4.4.2 which is ND7 (I honestly can't remember at this point). I I was able to root and install safestrap eventually. Then comes my stupidity, I forgot that I had to flash a touchwiz rom and flashed another rom and to add injury to insult, I flashed it in the stock slot and not the rom slot. Then I tried to restore my backup and it failed. Now what happens is I can occasionally get into the safestrap recovery and I try to flash Alliance rom and it still doesn't work. I try to boot the stock slot and it gets stuck on the verizon screen. Any help would be appreciated.
Any help? Please?
