[Q] No Sim Card Detected, Not Registered to Network - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok first of all, I know that there are many other similar thread, I've read a couple of them, and in frustration I decided to make another one. I believe that I have a slightly different problem here..
I flashed Ultima V11.01 just yesterday, everything was going well until this evening an error popped up, saying something like "The mobile network will be unavailable until you restart with a valid SIM card inserted.". This has happened a few times back then, so it wasn't exactly a suprise, but after a couple of restarts it kept happening until finally the SIM card is not detected at all (usually it's detected at first, stopped working a few minutes later).
I tried to put the sim card (DIY micro-sim) to other phone and it worked just fine. At this point I thought it was my sim card slot causing the troubles, but then I tried other sim card in my S3, and it worked fine, no errors.
So it's basically: Phone A + SIM A = Error
whereas Phone A + SIM B & Phone B + SIM A works fine.
And by the way, when it says "No sim card", the signal bar indicates that it's connected (it's the mobile network signal). I tried to make phone calls, got an error "Not registered to a network". Going to Settings>Wireless and networks>Mobile networks, another error "Insert SIM card to access network services.

I've tried restoring to before I flashed Ultima, still no sim card detected.
Any idea?
Thanks in advance for all helps

Maybe try with an different rom..
Good luck

Super wipe then go back to stock, if still the same then sim reader is faulty.

Can you get a logcat for the radio buffer? This could shed some light on why it's misbehaving.
Using adb:
Code:
adb logcat -b radio *:V
If you can post anything you think is strange from that buffer.

you say that when you try another simcard in your phone its ok, so that would rule out anything wrong with your phone itself, even if your sim works in another phone it could be just not made correct for the s3's sims holder.

Got a new sim card, everything worked fine. Thanks guys

Thanks for your help mate. To be honest I don't really know where to start if i were to do what you told me, I only know flashing and rooting

I got a new sim card today, it solved the problem. But it's still strange tho, the faulty sim card worked fine on other micro-sim devices (tried on iPad), it even worked on blackberry (which use normal-sized simcard)!
And by the way, the sim-card stopped working when I was still using the phone, not after I reboot or removing the card.

Good news!
Probably some obscure hardware voltage tolerance or something came in to play here.
Guess we'll never know.

good to hear your problems resolved. ive made my own micro sims in the past and the sames happened, it can be a little slip of the sim that takes one of the metal contacts out of allignment,
best of luck

i had same problem, i woke up every morning with this error, all what i did is replacing a new sim card and voila! no more problems

good to hear you managed to fix it without being some major problem.

I had the same issue on a replacement S4, after my first one screen died. Anyway I took it to my local Sprint corporate store, they installed a brand new simcard in and it is now running like a champ.

No network connection.
I just replaced the sim card tray on my Galaxy S GTi9000 phone after buying a new one from ebay. I inserted the replacement after dismantling the phone which required no soldering of this component. .My previous sim card tray had a broken pin
caused by me when it got stuck and I was getting a error message that I was not registered on network. I also was instructed to insert my sim card when one pin was broken on the sim card reader.Prior to installing my Amaysim when it got stuck it was working fine.
Now on I am back to where I started trying all hardware and software solutions trying to get a network solution.
Most people would give up and I think the solution must be SIMPLE!
I have noted that on the back of the circuit board(gold panel) is scratched which could possibly indicate that the circuits could be destroyed and perhaps the fix would to replace the sim card, This SIM card works in my old Nokia but not in the Galaxy S
To the brainstrust -any solutions would be appreciated

STRAIGHT TALK SIM NOT BEING RECOGNIZED by GALAXY NOTE I717

I have a Straight Talk Sim.. with my Unlocked NOTE ..actually now I have 3 ST SIMS as the 1st 2 were thought maybe defective and ST sent me 2 replacements.
None of them get recognized as the message " No SIM Card" just pops up with all 3. Its not the APN settings, as I have tried all suggested and they are primarily for data and not the phone.
Any suggestions here? I have talked at length to both Samsung and ST and tehy each say its the other. Phone works fine with a TMOB SIM.
Thank you.

It seems to me its gotta be the sim cards...bcuz i use ST with my note with no problems...and now using it with my s3 without any issues at all...from wat u posted its the sim cards...especially if phone recognize the Tmobile sim card...
Just stick the sim cards in another phone, then you'll know for sure its the ST sims.
That is interesting because there a quite a few Note's on ST SIM cards..
Rarely if ever does a SIM card go bad unless it was chewed by a dog or hit by a lightening bolt.
There is something very simple yet wrong. Wrong SIM card? It is in backwards or upside down something like that.
Why is your phone 'unlocked'? The StraightTalk SIM card should already be for the AT&T phone so no need for unlocking.
You don't need to unlock but if your ESN was carrier locked that would explain it. Phone under contract but customer stops paying on 2 year contract and it gets the boot. Just one of many examples of how to get a carrier lock.
My AT&T carrier unlocked/rooted Note ran on Tmobile and is now on ST.
These are the only settings that work right for me. Although the phone should boot with the ST SIM even if these are wrong.

Yes I messed with the APN settings .. and yet those are for data . The phone as you have mentioned should boot automatically and yes many Galaxy NOtes are using Straight Talk. Now I have 3 different SIMS not working !? And yes they are in correctly etc.. if they weren't the Tmob SIM wouldnt work either.
I bought the phone New and it came unlocked as I prefer it that way rather than deal with ATT. I also travel abroad.
It's been a head scratcher.... Though I know the answer has to be out there.. I cant believe I have 3 bad SIMS in a row.
I am open to suggestions. Thank you.
ok good to know, please let me know how it goes for you, as I am also in the same boat and trying to use SL for my lovely note
did you flash custom roms?
you might want to take a look at your device informations, especially the IMEI, if its not your correct IMEI it means you've wrecked your /efs partition, search for EFS recovery to fix your imei and your sim card not recognized issue
Originally I did not..I inserted into the stock ROM. That didnt work , So then I flashed custom ROMS.. 3 different ones.. and they didnt work.
I dont understand what you mean by not the right IMEI ? Its a number.. the SIM doesnt screen IMEI's ? I bought it brand new about 6 weeks ago from Negri Electronics which specializes in unlocked phones.
They have a very good resellerating but one customer Lawrence reports something that would explain your case:
"Some of their unlocked phones (unlocked-originally branded) have the problem that they come with generic IMEI 004999010640000, this imei is generic and it is not unique. Phone won't get service in some countries(i.e UK) and it is a matter of time before this imei gets banned in US. Negri recognizes the problem but won't repair or exchange the phone, read their store policies before buying......................".
Well... then why would it work with T Mobile? I mean after all, its an ATT phone and designed to run on their networks? So it works with ATT and T MOB but not Straight Talk?
As well Thats not my IMEI, not to say perhaps its another generic one, I have no idea. You make some interesting points that I haven't heard before.

once again look at your device information - imei, and look at your imei on the box package or from under your device's battery, if they don't match then your EFS is ruined
flashing roms could cause these, but its pretty rare

in this case, i think you have 2 problems..
1. your device is sim carrier locked (which you could unlock manually)
2. your /EFS partition which hold your original IMEI is corrupted (you could restore/fix this too)
if you happen to have some files mentioning EFS on the root of /sdcard then you should backup those files.. you might need those to restore/fix your EFS partition

Thank you for your insights Twiq.
OK... The IMEI #s match. SO that's not the issue ( I think).
It's unlocked, so even though its an ATT phone, it works with Tmob SIM.
As for the EFS corruption possibility, well, it didnt work with all original Stock ROMS on Android 2.36. I rooted it thinking maybe ATT had something in there..but it still didnt work after 3 different ICS ROMs. I restored the original ROM yet still zero.
It works for Tmob. If the EFS was corrupted, then even a Tmob SIM wouldnt work.. right?

nope, then my earlier posts are irrelevant..
i think what you need here is flashing a different modem version which works with your current carrier/location.
what is your Baseband Version? it's on the about screen
you could try several modems listed Here, but flash only modems compatible with your current rom (GB/ICS)
there should be modems for international versions of Note, but i couldn't find one without downloading full rom.

Just cutting in here. . .
With a galaxy tab if you wanted to put in a sim from a phone T-mobile would block you and you would get a generic web page saying go buy a data plan for your tablet. The solution was to delete the efs folder and let the android system rebuild it. That rebuilt efs was the generic 0049etc. So a bad efs won't stop you on T-mobile's network.
As for esn, US GSM carriers don't block that. I asked a service rep why not, especially in the cas of stolen phones? He said those stolen phones are new customers.
Sorry there's no help in those paragraphs, but they eliminate some things. . .
I still haven't seen that you tested the ST sims in another phone. Its unlikely but a good possibility.

Baseband is i717UCLE2
I have flashed several of the ICS radios for T mobile... but that would effect the reception etc.. This didoes even recognize the SIM. From the moment the phone powers on it says "no SIM".
I talked to Negri, and they just unlock the phone just as you or I would with a code they buy in bulk.
So its no generic IMEI or any grey market stuff.
The radios it has are for ATT and this should work for an ATT StraightTalk SIM.. but it doesn't !?
Find someone with an AT&T unlocked phone. Your SIM should start up in their phone and their SIM should start your phone. If not then take it from there. I've had at least three radios that didn't work right with ST but all booted up fine.

Right.. this is beyond a radio issue . They dont boot. When I boot with a non activated TMOB SIM, it doesn't say " NO SIM". It boots, if I try to make a call, it will say "network unavailable".
With the ST SIMS, it immediately says "NO SIM" before it even accesses the network. Samsung said that since it reads the TMOB sim, it cant be the sim card reader.
I am grateful for all who have volunteered their expertise here, yet still have yet to find a solution though I know there is one out there. Thank you.
Dude. . . The ST sims are dead.

[Q] Sim Card iregullary not detected

my phone lost signal iregullary... if my phone lost signal, it said that my sim card ist not detected. But after i reboot the phone, the signal is back until it lost again by itself and i must reboot it again. This happend very iregullary. That's why i cannot said i happened after i run any apps or after i do something with the phone... i try already a lot of modem, but the problem ist still there... i try also to format my efs folder and restore it again. it works for 1 day, but after that i lost my signal again. This happened very oft (maybe 2-3 times in a day).i tried also to flash different ROM, but the problem is not gone.
The problem is there since i upgrade the android from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3.... now i am in Custom Rom XWLPT. The provider is O2 Germany.
can somebody help me with this problem.
I had this problem also... try another sim card... that was the only thing that worked for me... i went to my provider and got it exchanged with a new sim card. Ask for a 128kb one.

[Q] Not Registered on Network

My S2 can't register on Network if it loses coverage. It can't re-register.
In this state it shows emergency calls only. 3G data works but not able to make/receive calls.
If I take out the sim and put it into my nokia phone I see that sim registers again.
Then I put it back to my S2 and it starts also working for my Galaxy S2.
Of course it works until it loses coverage. If I go into subway or somewhere else to lose coverage then I have to use my SIM once in my nokia to get it registered again.
My imei is OK. it's same with back of the phone so i don't think that my EFS folder is broken.
I'm on official stock kernel-rom. Not rooted.
I've tried 2.3.4 / 4.0.3 and latest leaked 4.1.2. Behavior is always the same.
It was working fine before. Problem happened after I took a travel and used Airplane Mode. When I landed it started making these problems.
Any Idea?
Modem issue maybe ? (assuming its not a physical problem with the antenna/associated circuitry). Test a bunch of modems out & see if it improves.

I actually did tried different ones. The one I'm using right now is Norway modem and it's showing the exact same behavior.
I don't think it's physical either. Lose of coverage triggers the issue.
Edit: I'm currently in Norway.
My IMEI is not broken but I just did the following GUIDE to make sure I don't have broken EFS folder:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021
Nothing has changed. If my phone was blocked by this country then I'd have no registration at all.
I can make calls recieve SMS etc. I only lose it if coverage is gone. Then phone just stayes as emergency calls only
I also tried to select mobile network manual or automatically.
It's not working either. SIM is working fine with my Nokia and I tried different SIMs from different operators. No change.
The problem is definetely my Galaxy S2.
Any other ideas?
It's very unlikely the phone antenna has broken, those things are really really hard to break. There is no way it could break just through use, have you done anything to physically damage the phone? I'd restore your EFS, wipe your data, /format system, and try different ROMs and modems (making sure you get the right IMEI) before you conclude the phone is broken.
If you lose coverage, does it work again if you reset the phone (take the battery out) and then turn it back on?

No physical damage at all. It was in the airplane mode and then I deactivated the airplane mode. That's how it all started.
I didn't have the EFS backed up before the issue started but I followed some guides to repair EFS anyway. Nothing changed.
My IMEI(*#06#) is the same with the one on the back of the phone so no IMEI damage either.
If I lose coverage it won't register not even with reset but it does something strange at the beginning after reset.
It first shows R letter on the signal bar. It gives an error on notifications saying that I lose the data because data on roaming is not activated.
Then few minutes later it just shows Emergency calls only(no R letter on the signal bar)
Well you've done pretty much everything I can think of to do at the user end, without understanding the entire problem (pretty unlikely by just having it described to you) there isn't much more I can recommend, next step would be take it back to the shop and see what they say (i.e i'd take mine back to the o2 store). Maybe something weird and wonderful has gone wrong.
There is nothing wrong with your phone. There is program called Galaxysim Unlock in play store. This little app should solve your problem. I think there is a thread on xda but cann't find it right now... Good luck.
Thanks for the advice.
I used the app it showed the status "locked" which is strange because I've unlocked my phone before.
Anyway I clicked unlock and paid $2,5 for it.
It now shows unlocked but didn't change anything. It's still the same issue.
I checked the FAQ it says that even if I used another program arlier it should still work but it doesn't.
Any idea why?
There's one more thing I realized that my /efs folder is read-only.
When I tried to use following GUIDE it asked me to remove my /efs folder(after backup)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021
When I tried to remove it I saw that it was Read-Only so I just deleted the content of it.
Does anyone know if this could be my problem?
I have the same problem. The only 'solution' I have found is to reflash my rom (I dont lose any data, its just a nuissance)

What rom did you re-flash? I've also tried few roms but they were all stock roms.
Maybe same one you used would help me too?
I use Jellybam 4.1.0 with Dorimanx 7.29.
Sometimes (not all the times though) when i lose signal (i.e. in a garage) it wont come back, no matter what I do. All I do then is boot into recovery and reflash the rom, I lose no settings. apps etc etc. It just is really annoying that there is no proper fix

Thanks for the info but I'll keep trying to find a solution.
Actually this all started when I traveled to a different country. I wonder what will happen if I go back to my home country.
Everything was working all fine. Hope it'll continue to do so
If you do find a solution, could you post it here? It would be mucg appreciated.
I already tried flashing multiple other modems but no help.
Here are the things I've tried and none of them worked so far:
I've tried different versions:
4.1.2 leaked and latest ones- XWLSD, XXLS8, XXLSJ
4.0.3 Few of them including one for Norway and my phone's original one: BVLPD (UK T-Mobile )
Old one 2.3.6
I've tried:
galaxysim unlock
GSII_repair
Galaxy_S Unlock
I've tried to recover from my " .nv_data.bak " to " nv_data.bin " file but my IMEI was never broken so didn't help.
I' did backup my EFS folder and tried to remove it so android will re-create it. Then replaced the nv_data files.
I've tried to unmount and mount the EFS folder and tried to make it RW not read-only.(couldn't do this)
I'm still thinking that it may be related to EFS folder being readonly but I'm not sure about that. That's the only thing left to try.
To be able to do that I needed to use adb in recovery mode. I did that with Philz Kernel but I encountered another problem that in recovery /sdcard wasn't mounted.
As I stated it all started with me travelling to Norway but it's not the first time I'm on roaming with this phone.
I'll write here when I get back to Turkey so we'll know if it's only happening here in Norway.
I hope this helps someone. If you ever find a solution please write here
I think I have an idea why this is happening and it looks like I solved it.
PROBLEM&SOLUTION: When I lose coverage I was trying to manually select operator many times but it never worked. I then used my sim card in my Nokia phone one time to register. When I put it back into my Galaxy S2 everything was working fine I'd just leave the Mobile Operator Selection as Automatic.
Now; when my phone is registered and working OK I manually selected Mobile Norway anyway.
Then I lost the coverage (went into basement lab we have) but this time it shows as following:
{

}
When I come back upstairs it was registered again. So just try to manually select your operator when you're registered.
Reason I think this is happening;
This started happening to me with MyCall operator. Which is actually an operator getting service from Mobile Norway (and when I ringed the Customer Service they said they're also getting service from Telenor in some places)
When I lost my coverage my phone was showing "emergency calls only" but for a short time it was also showing R letter on signal bar which means it's in roaming state. eventually R would disappear and even if I'm in MyCall/Mobile Norway coverage again, it wouldn't re-register.
I think my phone just knows that the MyCall sim also uses Telenor infrasturcture so it tries to REGISTER and stay locked in that state.
This was never happening to me when I was using a SIM card which has it's own structure which doesn't get service from another operator.
That's why I think it can be the reason.
Hope it helps others..
Just wanted to give an update that I came back to Turkey and everything went back to normal. My phone has "Select Network Autpmaticly" option.
It's working all normal. Even if I lose coverage and come back to coverage it has nor problem registering again.
So this was only happening in Norway to me.

SPRINT, Galaxy Nexus Sim card error "NO SIM CARD"

OK so this is a good one, and i feel this needs some attention.
Phone: Samsung Galaxy Nexus provided by Sprint ( NO PHYSICAL SIM CARD IN THIS MODEL) sprint doesnt use SIM cards in most there phones currently.
Problem: Phone displayed message "SIM card is PUK locked, Please enter 8 digit PUK Code to unlock. contact sprint for details". i browsed sprints forums and found a few posts of codes to attempt. Only so many codes may be entered before the Sim Shuts its self down for good. now the phone was displaying across the bottom at lock screen "No SIM card:sprint" (yes i confirmed and double checked there is no removable SIM card In the phone or under the battery). so now the phone service is limited. no mobile data is usable and phone calls often were dropped with "NO SIM CARD" error.
Rooted Status: phone was Rooted and custom rom JBsourcery was currently in use. prior to seaking sprint store for help. i went ahead and did a full restore using Nexus toolkit application to Flashback stock OS and lock boot Loader so warranty would still be eligible.(note this flash back did not recover sim error)
What i tried to fix the error: Flashed other custom roms, as well as a stock rom later on, Factory reset both done by Team Win Recovery Project, and factory reset done with stock Recovery after i restored phone to stock, Wiped Cache and Dalvik. No use off to the sprint store
Sprint Store Diagnosis: showing them the "No SIM Card error" gave them a good laugh. the store tried there version of full reset. No fix here. associate called Sprint Tech support. they were stumped as well and simply replaced. I got new galaxy nexus
How did this happen/ What caused it Yes! i have the answer for this believe it or not. i just couldnt find a fix. once the galaxy nexus is Rooted and so far custom roms i can confirm have this Feature. ROMs included are: JBsourcery for nexus 4.4 and 4.5, And the 4.2.1 stock rom available on Galaxynexusroot.com. i assume this feature is thrown in because the roms are universal for Sprint, verizon, and GSM phones. therefor if you have a Sim card you can edit your sim card lock.
In my case, for my sprint Nexus under Settings> Security= this list has an added toggle "set up Sim card lock" of course my curios mind checked into this. little did i know that as soon as you trigger that bad boy. something in the phone changes Permanently .
as i stated i did get a new phone in exchange for this error, and of course i rooted again and flashed the 4.2.1 rom and this setting is back again. as so long i dont touch it. there will be no issue. however, i think this should be looked into and possibly removed from certain roms specific to "SPRINT" lol as we dont need it. also maybe look into a way to recover from this scary phone breaker. i dont beleive i am the only one who did this. there will be more so long as there are curious minds out there who Root and custom rom flash. thanks guys

Yup, I got myself a nice useless brick as well because of this stupid SIM lock setting. VERY VERY pissed, as there is no solution, and sprint will not provide the code.

"Insert SIM card" issue suddenly

Hi guys
I have a big issue with my S3 GT I9300. This morning, everything was running well and suddenly i got the error message "No SIM card, insert a SIM card". I didn't try to flash any ROM, or put any root or something. I was on my desk, the phone was on the table and when i checked it a few minutes later : no network and SIM card error message...
Until now i was on I9300XXUFME3 ROM. I tried to clean the sim card, the sim card slot, push the sim card while the phone was turning on (maybe it wasn't touching correctly the pin), but still getting the same issue. My IMEI is OK, still the original one (no 00 or 0049, etc).
That's why i decided ot flash a orginal ROM and flashed my phone to I9300XXUGMJ9. Flash is OK but still getting the network issue (no sim card inserted)..
I couldn't try my phone with an other SIM as I was alone at the office but i guess the issue comes from the phone as my SIM card is not old at all (i have it for 6 months only) and I don't remove it often from the phone.. Until this morning, my phone (bought it from someone 6 months ago= was working perfectly and I didn't flash it since May 2013, so I don't really understand..
I also tried Ariza's patch (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1918601) but when I press "Apply fix", it starts downloading and stays at 0%.. Nothing seems to be downloading.
Any help would be very greatful guys, thank you.. :crying:
Don't go flash crazy, you'll do more damage with that patch.
Sounds like your sim card reader is faulty, not an expensive item to have repaired.

Hello,
I just went to an Orange store here in Paris and the issue was simply a deffective SIM card.. They replaced it by a new one and got the issue fixed
Thanks a lot guys for your kind help!
Hi guys, i have similar problem, i tried different sim cards, none worked, tried changing the whole card reader with a brand new one, but it didn't fix the problem.
everything started approximately a month ago, or even more, i tried rooting the phone after applying the update but i missed up and almost killed the hone, after allot of effort i managed to bring it back to life and re-installed the firmware update, but the phone started giving me the "Not registered on network" error, and the IMEI changed to that 0049 thing, then it started telling me to insertsim card.
the thing is, before all this happens I had no idea how to important it is to backup, so I have no EFS backup
so, any ideas what could be the cause? and how to fix it?
