[Q] GS3 forwards SMS to Email - How can I stop it? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I know some people were looking for an app that forwards SMS to an email account. Sadly I have switched this option on somewhere in my GS3 and now it is forwarding every SMS to my Email account. This is really annoying now and I want to switch it off, sadly I don't remember how or when I have switched this on? Is there any chance I can track this down?
The crazy part is that I totally factory reset my phone to factory setting and its still forwarding the SMS to my work email account.....
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Are you abosolutely shure you didn't configure it with your carrier? Some ofqer that service.

I'm not completely sure, but I think I haven't done that. This must be some backup option because they are going to my work email address and I think I did that in case I don't have access anymore to my private email address.
So it might have something to do with Avast Mobile Security, I had this installed to my root folder, so this might have survived the factory reset and unrooting process? Or this is a setting in my email or gmail app?
The problem is that I really don't know where to look :-/

Check your email account settings, you might have ticked "sync text messages" or something like that.

[Q] Google contact vs phone contact

Why can't you change the default for your contact that you create on the phone to default to a Google contact instead of the phone contact? Does anyone know how this can be changed? I rooted my phone and lost a couple contacts that I had put in the phone because phone contacts don't sync to the gmail account. Glad I at least found this out early so I don't have a huge problem when putting a different rom on it in the future.

that was a really annoying "feature" of the samsung fascinate. I guess the only way around it is to use the AOSP contacts program. I will attempt to restore it from titanium backup and see if it works
it usually sets it as gmail right out of the gate when i'm creating contacts, etc...i find myself checking every once in awhile now anyways. it is truly annoying!

A) language
B) It's a feature of sense, therefore htc, not vzw, is to blame.
however, yes, annoying. One solution would be to export contracts to SD from phone, import from SD to google.
(you would have to keep doing this, but it's a good way to back up before wipe/flash.)

I did the same thing. I went into gmail and organized/updated all my contacts. So now all my phone contacts are Google contacts. Be sure to go into gmail and do a perge/merge of any duplicates. This makes porting contacts over that much easier.
What really annoyed me was the linking/suggested linking of contacts on the phone vs google vs facebook. After you centralize everything around your google contacts things become much easier.
To set contact default to Google go into you contact list then press menu and choose view next uncheck the box that says "phone" and now your default is Google

I think if you create the new contact in your google account (vs on the phone) then it will sync up and everything will be OK.
I have to get into my google account contacts and clean up some stuff, duplicates, etc., that seem to appear every now and then.

Thanks, this is one step closer to what I need. I have a couple GMail accounts on my phone one of which I use solely for work contacts and I use the option of selecting which GMail account I added the new contact to. Really missing this feature
Any word if the AOSP contact app works?

That just changes which contacts show. I am talking about entering a new contact and letting it be a Google contact by default. I don't want to accidentally set it up as a phone contact which will not sync to your Google account.

I gotta say Contact Management with Android has been probably one of my biggest frustrations. I like the ability to sync my GMail contacts, that's easy enough. But between getting pictures and "linking" "synching" and "attaching" contacts via Twitter, MS Exchange, and other means... TO not being able to only populate mobile numbers when creating SMS/MMS's and such, it is just way more difficult than it should be.
It could and SHOULD be much simpler. Maybe I'm just a wii-todd, idk.. Either way, I feel your pain dude.
Ya so was I.... Maybe since u have a mixture it isn't working for u.....Export all your contact to Google then remove ur Google account from the phone then delete all ur contacts off ur phone then sync with Google and do the steps I posted before

[Q] Disabling GMail app (no root) - Solved

Hey all,
Can't believe I am actually interested in disabling GMail.
But the standard "Mail" app seems to have a nicer UI than the Gmail app. Especially since it has dedicated Gmail settings.
But how do I disable the gmail app (can't be uninstalled...yet)? Obviously without root, and not sure it's worth the trouble to temp root.
It's just that every email received at Gmail gives me two separate notifications...
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
The best I can think of (without rooting) is turning off notifications for Gmail so you don't get harassed by two alerts.

That's really all you need to do.
I turned off the gmail notification the first day I had the thing for the same reason.

FWIW, the dedicated Gmail settings in the Sense mail app are POP3 settings. In other words, every email will show up on your phone as unread, even if you have read it on another device or the web interface.

Thanks for this. I did disable notifications for the Gmail app, which worked like a charm.
As to the pop3 mail, I did not get an inbox full of unread mail when I set it up.
Perhaps the Sense mail has been improved? I am familiar with what you are describing, but that is not the behavior I am seeing.

This issue happened for me on my Rezound, so we are talking about the same Sense version. When I set it up, I didn't get an inbox full of unread messages either, but every message I got from then on wouldn't get marked in Sense mail as unread unless I viewed it from within that app. So, for example, I could get a new gmail message in the gmail app/sense mail, and view it in the gmail app/web interface, but even after refreshing the sense mail it still shows up as unread. Eventually I had to remove the gmail account in sense mail and set it up manually as an IMAP.
An HTC rep responded to an email of mine and basically told me that manual IMAP was the only way to get around the issue. But kudos to you if everything is working!

Well, maybe it's different in ICS, but on GB, you open email, hit menu, hit more, hit account settings, hit sync schedule.
Though if you're talking about GMail, and not EMail, you can just turn off auto-sync in your Accounts and Sync settings.
its very simple go to settings> accounts and sync then untick the auto sync option..thats it

So obviously there are some differences in the email app from Gingerbread to ICS. It's just a matter of navigating the menu to find the options you're looking for.
When you open the email app, and hit menu, do you get a "Settings" or "Account Settings" option? (if so, do you see a "Sync schedule" option inside that?)

That's the sync period. In other words, how far back to retrieve emails. There should also be a sync schedule, to set peak and off peak schedules on how often to sync.

You set it to what you want.
Push = emails retrieved when they are received.
Manual = on demand (when you first open the email app, or click "refresh")
You can also set it to intervals.
Peak/off peak is like day/night settings.
This is the same as GB...

It seems on ICS that these settings are not present, either in the main accounts sync settings, or in the stock mail client settings. I think they were there when I set the email account up, but perhaps cannot be changed subsequently?
Am I just missing something, or do I need to use another email client to get this capability?!

not that i can see. It just downloads whatever is waiting. Doesnt download any attachments automatically, youd have to open the email and press download for that.

Touchpad and outgoing email issue

I have an issue where after setting up my email acct on the Touchpad, I can receive email just fine, but everytime I write one, it goes to the outbox and will not send. I'm using Hotmail (live.com).
I just received a second hand android pad from my Mother and I have the same problem on that even though the setup for incoming and outgoing mail completes fine.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?
Thanks

No need to be so rude about it, cdzo72. He's new to the Android scene, apparently, so he needs patience and guidance, not animosity.
Settings => Apps => click EMail, then choose Force Stop, then Clear Cache, then Clear Data. Reboot your tablet and try again.
The other thing I would do, and this is just from experience, is set up a GMail account and import everything from your hotmail into it, and start using it. It's an easier platform to use, and also integrates flawlessly with Android, being from the same company (Google). Then again, since I loathe hotmail, it could just be bias talking.

ve6ay,
Thanks for the kindness. First off, my question related primarily to the HP Touchpad which is still on WebOS. No wonder none of this made sense. The Android suggestion may help on my second non-HP tablet which I 've only had for a couple of days.
I did not realize everything on this site had to be android related. I thought I remembered a lot of WebOS questions here when the Touchpad first came out. My bad.
cdzo72,
Sorry I bothered you. I won't post here again. Also, sorry I'm so stupid. I'll get some help.
You also might want to go into your hotmail settings and use change the impap/pop settings. Hotmail by default uses pop, try changing it to imap and the reload your email settings again on your touchpad. Also as someone mentioned , adding your hotmaail account to your gmail account makes thing even easier.
I have no idea why it would do that from within WebOS, since I haven't used the mail client there for anything but Gmail. But I agree, log into your Hotmail, and change the settings to I map. Then go into your email app, and manually add in another account, using the I map settings that they (should) offer you in the settings. I can't say where they are or what they are, since I haven't used Hotmail since the 90s.
Best of luck, mate. Don't be scared away. It is just that some new people don't bother to search. Your question is one I haven't seen yet, so it is a good one to investigate. Than, you for bringing it up.

Haxin,
Thanks for the suggestion. I got things fixed up on both tablets.
On the Android, deleting the account, clearing the cashe and data, and re-establishing the account did the trick.
On the WebOS HP unit, I deleted the account, re-booted and manually set up the Hotmail again with settings that I had Googled. All this time I was using settings that WebOS had used during an automatic set-up. I think it turned out to be a port setting and a security setting. Everything works fine now, too.
I thought it weird that both units had the same issue which is why I had originally thought it to be a Hotmail issue, not a setup issue.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement. Sometimes folks go from zero to grumpy in 6 seconds.
All is sorted out now, see my reply to haxin above.
I haven't changed the setting in Hotmail to I map yet, since it seems unnecessary at this point. If I have future issues, I'll try that.

Email not syncing / cant delete email account

Sorry for the long post.
I have a gmail account and a hotmail account. Gmail works fine but hotmail is not syncing with the phone. I can see on the web app of hormail that I have received new email but I press the sync button on the mail app and nothing happen. I verified the password and is the correct one. I was reading that it happening to some people on the s3.
Tried to delete the account on setting/accounts and it say that some apps need the hotmail account and that I need to reset the device to factory. Tried to delete the account from the email app and it shows me "delete account failed-503 service unavailable" I have been looking through the forum and cant find an answer. Is there's a way I can delete without resetting ? im stock but rooted Thanks in advance
Figured out! deleted the stock email data from titanium backup and it deleted the account. Set it up again and seems to becworking fine!
You could also clear the data on the mail app...once cleared, go back to the email app and youll run the set up all over again

When I flash new rom, I try to avoid following....
1. dirty flashing (flashing over existing rom without wiping my own ass)
-> sometimes creates problems with functionality, but not always
2. retrieving titanium backup with yellow lettered internet bookmark, all red lettered datas, and any 'Account' data.
a)For internet bookmark, retrieve green lettered one but not the yellow one. Retrieving both yellow and green ones will combine 2 same bookmarks.
b)Do not save nor retrieve any red lettered datas.
c) Do not save or retrieve any 'Account' data which is on the list among other datas(regardless of what color it is), or it may create functionality problems such as syncing your email.

Stanz,
Yahoo mail works better for me if I set it up manually. You can let the email app find the servers and such on its own, but that's where I've had most of my problems. If you follow the prompts in a manual set up its pretty intuitive. Delete your Yahoo account and try that.
