So I just ordered a GSIII and it will probably arrive in a day or two.
Until then I decided to try learn everything about this phone (or at least as much as possible)
Here some simple(maybe) questions I have.
How far are they with the custom ROMs? I saw there are quite a lot of them so far but the once I looked on (based on jellybeans) where still having camera problems and a few other minor issues. Are there any stable custom roms where almost everything works?
Another question is. I saw there is a normal android dev sub forum and a new one called "original android dev"
I guess the first one is dev projects based on samsungs official ROM while the other one is for dev project based on AOSP?
What's the pros/cons for each? I guess the AOSP roms don't have the video window playing while doing other stuff and maybe not the galaxy beam thingy?
Also I have been pretty much dead on this forum for half a year.
Tried to do a comback two months ago but my Desire got bricked I think since it completely died during change of hboot.
Anything groundbreaking I have missed in the world of android the past half year (I already know about the most common things like the major things JellyBean brings but not all of the details)

You have to work them out for yourself best rom what rom posts are banned .

Guys, I've lost touch with this thread since I've gone to the Note II on Verizon. I am wanting to give my brother my old Note since he has AT&T and the phone is just sitting unused, but I left my previous Note being a mess with force closes and all and he is not good with technology so I want the most stable ROM for him that I can overclock too. Any recommendations on ROM's and Kernels? I would like Jelly Bean if possible. Suggestions would be appreciated and then I'll check them out. Thanks.

No, but it does mean that if you ask the question of 10 people, you'll get 10 different answers back. Some people will flash a new ROM, not have a reboot in 24 hours, and consider that "stable". It doesn't sound like the OP's brother will care about a rooted phone or running custom ROMs, so reverting it back to stock will probably be best for him.

I haven't had time but am on a week long vacation and really want to do this now. Stock is not really the answer I want. I would like to know the most stable ROM made that keeps all the Samsung apps and S Pen usability, but even more than that is running Jelly Bean. Can anyone point me to which posts to look at and decide, or just give me their opinion on them if they use them. And what is the best kernel for that, cause I would like to overclock. I will start looking myself, but would love to hear some opinions, not just "stick to stock". I have ran many, many ROMs over the years that were pretty stable without being stock. I am just out of touch with the Note 1 as I have had the Note 2 for awhile and hadn't done anything to my Note 1 in quite some time. I believe I was running Paranoid Android (charging it now) but would prefer a closer to stock based ROM. Thanks. I cant offer you a JB stock build for our note 1, because that build does not exist.
Since kernel source for JB has not been released, we are forced to use the JB framework blobs, combined with a modified ICS kernel.
This leaves us a broken rom, that has many working features, and is for the most part stable. But like all custom builds, leaves us with some bugs.
The "leave it stock" statement is not meant to be offensive. It simply is the truth at this point, as we have no official, "stable" JB builds. Although this site does offer many high quality JB variant builds. And no one person can tell you the best one, as our usage habits differ so greatly. You simply need to read the threads, and base your opinion on the user reports from the threads.
It is our hope that Samsung will release an update for us, and open the door on some amazing JB work. but until that happens, we will have bugs, and broken functionality.
I use a very nice ICS build on occasion, as I feel that it offers the best performance, balanced with a feature rich rom.
FlappJaxxx UCLF6 build #12 is my top pick at the moment.
Unfortunately, the rules prevent my linking the rom directly for you, as the developer is no longer on XDA. but his works can be found at rootdev.org in it's complete form. and I for one feel that until we see an official update, no better ICS/ JB variant work can be found than his.
and I'm sure that if/when the update comes, the same will be said for his quality of builds in the JB framework and beyond.
He has true talent for building outstanding code. And you are well served using his wares. I hold much respect for Flappjaxxx, despite his leaving XDA. And I'm greatful to have his work at my disposal.

Thanks for the reply. I remember Flappjaxxx. I will definitely take a look at this. I know all ROMs have problems. Just looking for a more stable than others one that is more up to date than just stock. Thanks, will give it a try.

Use the kernel already present in the rom...
And use the UCLF6 modem.....g
I'd recommend ptmr3's Padawan V8 7005 Base OR Padawan 5.1 UCLF6 . I've been running Padawan ROMs for 5 months and they all have been pretty stable. Take a look! :good:
Flapjaxxxx's FJKang is really stable, along with his h0tcakez kernel. It's 4.2.2 JB, too.
One of my favorite roms is definitely AOCP 4.1.2. Not the latest jb but by far one of the most stable roms I've ever used.

Yes, but the 4.1.2 build. That one is 4.2.2 and while it is pretty stable I still find the 4.1.2 version to be a bit more solid. There's a link to older builds in that thread I believe.
I am not an expert. I know very little about these ROMs.
I AM A USER.
I always look for a stable but capable, and fast ROM. I love some of the freedoms these flashes give to me, and some of the "flow" of using my phone is better when stupid stuff is turned off and productive stuff is turned on and preinstalled.
Everyone is different and that is why many EXPERTS here will suggest trying each one.
For me, I do NOT like flashing. I do it when I feel there is a reasonable step forward or I hit issues and support dwindles for my current ROM.
All that said... Today...
I am pretty happy with flapp jaxxx and jellybeer.

Hi there,
I have a i717. For the past several months, I had been running CM 10 stable build (10.1.3 I believe), but found it to be anything but stable...Lots of random reboots, screen no always very responsive on attempted wake...It got bad enough that I went back to my previous ROM, waaay back to FlapJaxx's Build 12. FJ's ROM is incredibly stable, always has been and I'm very tempted to just roll with this until my contract is up...but at the same time, this is Android version 4.0.4 so it makes me feel a bit old fashioned.
It seems much of the community here has moved onto other phones, so my options may be limited...but anyone got a shout out for a good STABLE ROM?
Besides the rock solid stability of FlapJaxx, I am also generally impressed with the battery life (on CM 10 it was pretty awful), and IMHO BLN is superior to Dynamic Notifications...
Now I am pretty sure that my reliance on BLN will limit my options, but I'm just curious what other options folks here might recommend.

If you want stable, stick with the stock 4.1.2 version. Or any stock version for that matter.
No one will be able to tell you what custom rom is stable but you. Not all devices will perform the same for 2 different people. What suits one person might not perform the same for another. Xda recommends you try all the custom roms and see what works best for you.

As near I can tell, if I want a rooted/de-bloated stock MD3 experience I'm looking at Padawan or Blackstar?
Since these use stock kernel, will BLN work or if I absolutely must have BLN working am I stuck with a 4.0.4 kernel?

XDA is a development site not a support site. As such members are expected to do the research, read through the development threads and decide what is BEST for them. The only results that would be posted here are what each member has found to be BEST for them by experimentation based on their phone/usage/setup/apps/signal strength. Please take the time to read through those development threads to learn all about the software you are about to drastically alter your very expensive device with.

I recently switched back from the Nexus line of phones to the Galaxy S line,which I have NOT regret at ALL, but where are all the ROMs for our S5? I am not being ungrateful to the dev's who are producing the current selections, but I am looking for ROMs such as Paranoid Android, PACman ROM, etc.... and before anyone says it, no, I am not a dev, so no, I cannot port it over or build it myself, just asking if anyone has an insight on the current status of amount of ROMs available. TIA!!!
Check the SGS5 international threads, you'll find plenty there. They're cross compatible with your device.

Almost all of those ROMs you listed are based on CyanogenMod device trees. We barely have a working CyanogenMod at this time. Check out unified development. Also as said there are plenty of stock based ROMs floating around in the G900F section which are compatible with G900T.
I expect once the S5 gets most features working properly and starts getting merged into the main CyanognenMod codebase you'll see development take off more. Right now plenty of issues to work though such as camera, media apps (YouTube) FCs, senors being flaky, etc.
Reading the threads in the unified development section is a good way to keep up-to-date, as well as Twitter and G+ of course.

Not sure what you mean by "stock custom ROMS". Anything in the international section that is compatible with the G900F (almost all of them) are compatible with our phone. Every single one except the ones that are made for the G900H, the exynos model.
So I'll just pick one at random then? Thanks for the help...
There is a thread with links to all the stock firmware releases. But downgrading has been debated if its even possible. The procedure is detailed in a couple different posts from what I've read. I doubt you will be able to run a kk ROM with the a LL bootloader and modem.

There are still Cyanogenmod 11 (KitKat) builds in the unified development section, that's probably your best bet. As mgp53 pointed out it's difficult if not downright impossible to downgrade android versions using the official firmware, if you're already on 5.1.1

Thanks so much! I am pouring through it now... might take a bit since I don't see a column for version number http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development#romList but I'll just sort by latest release and click on every single link manually till I see a 4.x that isn't a buggy PoS. I was originally hoping to steer clear of AOSP/CM because I heard the battery life isn't as good as TW or "superslim" style stripped-down stock fws, but at this point I will take what I can get. I've had terrible luck getting any kind of answers across multiple subforums on this site. Your post was the most useful by far. Thanks again.

It really is a shame that 1) the download links on the 600+ Infinity ROM thread are all dead, 2) SlimROM doesn't seem to exist in any meanful/useable state for the s5 even though they have tons of devices including the s3/s4, 3) Sick n Twi5ted for 4.x is a buggy PoS, 4) Liquidsmooth has major missing features such as no camera (You thought releasing a ROM on a 16megapixel flagship device with no camera function was OK enough to start asking for donations and then never got around to adding support for the camera? At least have the decency to put a list of major bugs and missing features in the OP. It is debateably fraudulent to put a donate button where the 'Major Issues' section should be and then not even have a disclaimer.
Users of this site really ought not to have to pour through 60-600 pages to find out major flaws on a ROM. In all the dozens of threads I've sifted through over the past week there was exactly ONE who was up front and honest including a section devoted to missing features/major bugs.

On the bright side, all this madness had led me to seriously consider developing my own ROM and that would probably be a good thing for me in general to learn anyway. Or alternatively I could create a website devoted to archiving older ROMs since there seems to be quite a few that have gone missing here. (think oldversion.com circa 2005)
