[Q] In-call screen blackout issue. Help please! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'm hoping someone has a solution to this very annoying issue I'm having with my Note 2.
It's Verizon - stock - 4.1.2
When I dial a phone number and put the phone to my ear the screen goes black - as it should. But when I move the phone away from my ear the screen doesn't come back on. It stays blacked out and I can't get it to come back on with the home or even the power button.
This means I can't hang up, I can't put the phone on speakerphone mode, I can't use the touchtone pad to navigate through menus. It's made my phone a real pain in the arse.
Anyone have any thoughts on what to do or what's going wrong?:fingers-crossed:

A couple things I'm thinking... Try pulling out your spen when it happens.. Do a battery pull if nothing else.. It might be the proximity censor... Do you have a screen protector on it?

I'll try the s-pen, maybe that will work.
I've got a screen protector, but it's the same one I've had on since I first bought the phone months ago. I've pulled the battery several time, it's the only way to hang up!
I too think it's the proximity censor, which sucks because I don't want to trade in my phone for some refurb that's gone through God knows what.

Good luck...those were the only things I could think of. ..

Take a look to this thread http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-...when-making-call-screen-doesnt-turn-back.html maybe it help!

Check your case and your screen protector. and clean the proximity sensor. Know it sounds weird, but have problems before with screen protectors getting oil on them when placed to the ear and the sensor thinking you are still close. Also lighting from cases makes the sensor go fruity. Not a science but worth a check.

THANKS! I used the compressed air method - I blew it through the ear hole and open the back of the phone and blew it through any openings I saw. Now the sensor works perfectly again. :highfive::highfive:

[Q] Horizontal calibration problem

Ok Looking for some help to see if anybody know how to reset the horizontal calibration on this phone.
I flashed a new ROM yesterday and when I went to set the calibration after I pressed the horizontal calibration and green circle centers it will shoot off to one side once it's finished which and forces everything to be in landscape mode. The only way I can get the phone to not stay in a constant landscape mode is to off the auto rotate function.
It wasn't the ROM because after several downloads and flashes (thinking something may have not downloaded or installed right) it kept doing it. Trying other ROMS gave the same results. ODIN back to stock gave the same results.
Has anyone ever had to reset this or have any other suggestions on how to go about correcting this problem?
Thanks in advance
Just lay the phone down on its back and push calabrate horizontal in the gereral settings

LOL thanks but that is the problem, when I push calibrate the green circle brings the ball to the center and when it finishes the ball shoots to the right side and stays there. not sure if its a hardware or software problem but it happens no matter what I try do do. I even odined back to pure stock hoping it would reset it but no luck so far.
Just to clarify, when it's done calibrating and still lying on a flat surface, the green ball moves?

Yes, the green ring brings the ball to the center and when it's done calibrating that you get the little pop up "calibrated" the ball will shoot to the right side of the screen. Iv'e look all over the internet for a solution and downloaded some apps that monitor sensors, looks like the horizontal axis seems to almost stuck in that position. I was hoping a reset of some kind may do the trick but there seems to be no way of resetting the accelerometer on these phones. Vertical axis is working just fine according to the sensor apps I have tried..
Sounds like a hardware problem. Has the phone been dropped or jarred in some way?
Actually I dropped it a distance of about 6 inches while sitting on my desk at work. The phone landed on my desk, it slipped out of my hands while I was rebooting it. It's got that thick T-Mobile rubber cover around it so it's well protected but who knows guess stranger things have happened.
It sounds like your going to have to send it back to Samsung to get it repaired.

You are absolutely right about that, good thing for insurance and being a T-Mobile customer for 5 years. They are sending a replacement phone 100% free of charge even though I've had this phone since day one of rollout.

Touch screen not working

I put a skinomi skin protector on and after that touch screen stopped working. I took it off and screen is still not working.
I got it to work by doing

Well, hard reset may help you fix this ASUS Transformer Prime touchscreen not responding issue: 1. Unplug the power cord and shut the unit off and Press and Hold the power button and the "Down" volume button together for 6-10 seconds and let them both go. 2. Wait a few more seconds until the term "Cold Boot" appears in the list near the top of the screens and just press and release the "Down" volume button again and let it reboot. If you own the dock be sure and do this with the dock connected.
Nevermind its not working again

That's a wet screen protector, right? Definitely sounds like water damage. Same thing happened to me with the original Droid phone. Power it off, put it in a bowl of rice over night, and cross your fingers.

[Q] anyone else notice!!??

has anyone else noticed that when you answer a phone call the screen turns off ...I hate it ...I have to hit the power button to wake the phone up and end the call .. does anyone have a fix for this ? thanks in advance
thats how all phones have been
is this your first smart phone bro?
if u dont cover the sensor it wont shut off
The screen should only turn off when you put it to your face . Once you pull away the phone the screen should wake . Check your settings you shouldn't have to use the power to wake it .

Yea I noticed the same thing. During a call pulled phone away from my face and screen stayed off. I thought something was wrong but if the call is active screen will come back on, if person hangs up and ur not quick to uncover sensor the screen stays off.
do you guys have screen protectors on your phones??? zaggs perhaps??
If anything is "blocking" your sensor, then it assumes that your face is up to the phone. The phone would then only wake up when the call is ended or the power button is pressed.
You must not have ANYTHING covering the sensor
I would say that this is most likely the case
Mine doesnt do that unless I put the phone up to my ear. Normally I just answer the phone and click it to speaker. When I do that the screen stays on....unless my hand/finger happens to be covering the light sensor.
I have Invisible Shield HD. And there's a cutout for the prox. sensor. Have the same problem. Hopefully HTC will fix it on the next firmware update

I'm not so sure about that. My OG Evo has a standard screen protector that "covers" the sensors, and they still work just fine. Maybe those crappy Zagg orange peels will interfere, but I still don't see that being too likely, as they're not really blocking any light.
I have this issue as well and after reading all over for the past two days it appears some units have this issue and some don't. Further complicating the issue is the fact some have screen protectors and some don't. Some have made cutouts on their screen protector and then it works as it should. Very weird.
As soon as I make a call the phone screen goes black while laying on my desk. When the call is over sometimes I can hit the power button to disconnect the call...sometimes I have to hold the power button down 10 seconds to soft reset the phone or I cannot get back to any screen and the call stays connected. Very weird. I got my phone at BB so I am going to stop back and see if they have had any returns and what their thoughts are.

Yeah I wish that was my issue....I don't have a screen protector on my phone and it doesn't work as designed.

I bought a Zagg and had the issue. They left a hole for a sensor but I think that's the light sensor with the proximity sensor being just to the left and covered. It's a small red light that turns on when making a call. So I made the hole bigger by making it a rectangle uncovering the proximity sensor. Now my phone goes on and off like it should when putting it to my ear. Maybe that'll help some of you? Though I have read some people having the issue without screen protectors.

Not sure if this will help or not, but in settings/accessibility settings there is an option to end calls using the power button. Might help.
OK, this is a bit OT so I apologize. But I can't figure it out and really dont feel it warrants a new thread. I hope you dont mind me dropping this in here.
Yesterday, at some point, this icon came into my notification bar and i CANNOT, for the life of me figure out what it is.
It looks kinda like a hearing aid or Bluetooth headset icon. But I use neither. I've looked all thru settings trying to figure it out. Checked thru accessibility . Just stumping me, and making me feel REALLY stupid.
Much thanks to anyone who knows.

I experienced the same issue with the screen turning off as soon as I placed a call. I pulled the Zagg HD off and the issue was resolved. I'm going to best buy today to exchange the Zagg for a new one and I will cut a little notch into it to see if it works.
After the screen goes off you have to press the power button but that little red dot next to the proximity sensor stays on unless you flash a bright light on it. I think regardless the proximity sensor is really sensitive and the Zagg HD just makes it that much more finicky.
Being in a dimly lit area makes it worse too.
**Update**
I went to bestbuy and exchanged my Zagg HD for a new one. I got home notched the cutout for the sensor a little more. Installed it and now I don't have any issues with the screen turning off.

I dont know if its just sprint phones but i assume most Note 3's will experience this issue. Something about the sensors not reading accurately. When i clean the sensor area with a cloth it works correctly. Hold the phone to my ear for a few minutes and it stops working. Clean the sensor area while still on the call and it will start back working... Issue probably started day one but just now realizing its a issue.
I had issues with this as well, the screen wouldn't turn off during a call, but turned out to be my screen protector. Pulled it off and works perfect now. Cheers!
Returned mine yesterday with a little headache as the rep i first spoke to decided to play with my phone vs doing a exchange. Manager sorted it all out and gave me a new phone. Also knox was tripped but i don't think they care. Dont think im going to root again till KNOX is out the way.
The sensor works like it is suppose to now. Funny story is that the sensor tried to act right at the sprint store. They have spot lights so the sensor was reading correctly. Explained to them i didnt walk around under spot lights they agreed and did the exchange.
So, I had this issue on my phone. Tried a bunch of stuff. The fix for me: can of compressed air targeted into the earpiece. Immediately solved and perfect again.

Will report back if problems return. Hoping for the best I already tripped knox.
Hello everyone. I found the cause of this I hope. The main culprit is hardware. 1st I will tell solution for this problem. Just push hard the earpiece chrome grill inside with ur nails and the proximity sensor will work properly. problem is when we use phone and it gets heated at top then the glue which is holding earpiece grill will loose itself. its hardware problem and eventually many note3 users will face this. im using exynos note3.

You can also get a micro fiber cloth a wipe the sensor area. And the light will cut back on. Before returning the defective one i did that a few times. Never even touched the ear speaker grill.
So once you have the phone to your ear and it cuts off....Wipe just the sensor are with the micro fiber cloth. The screen will come back on. It will happen again the next time you use the phone but i am just saying its not the ear speaker.

[Solved] I think I killed it

Hey guys. I was using my phone to check email, browse facebook, normal stuff. When all of the sudden it emitted a high-pitch squeal and shut off. That was an hour ago. I've been unable to get it to come back on. If i pull the battery and reinsert, it'll show the Samsung logo before beginning and endless series of vibration pulses. It won't stop unless I pull the battery. I've tried getting into recovery, no luck. I tried putting it into Odin mode, but as soon as the Odin screen loaded, the phone went black and back into the vibration pulsing. I've tried pulling the SIM, memory card, new batteries, anything I can think of. I've got plenty of backups on my SD card, so wiping it isn't an issue if i could just get to a recovery screen.
Any ideas what the hell this is??
Bad battery.
Stuck power button.
Your power button may be stuck. Try flicking it with your finger.
Well, i tried booting it with only the wall power connected, no battery, but nothing. I tried flicking the power button to loosen it, but no joy there either. It feels like the power button is releasing itself like it should, doesn't feel stuck. I could possible spray a tiny bit of switch cleaner in there to loosen things up.
EDIT: What is a stuck power supply supposed to feel like? Mine feels like it's making a full movement. There's a solid click on a full press and a smaller click when releasing it. Feels like it's working. I'm tempted to just crack her open and get a better look. I'm on a replacement Blackberry while my note is down and this dumbphone is KILLING me! Gotta get the note back up and running.
The power button looks like this on the inside.
It's a tiny micro switch. Sometimes the tiny mechanics get stuck on the inside. When it's stuck, it constantly reboots. It's a very common problem and sometimes an easy fix.
Parts of your problem resemble a bad battery like capt mentioned. As well as the stuck power button symptom. You can take the phone apart and try to clean it. It's not hard to do. Spraying in the external button probably won't reach the actual button though. Sorry if our first two ideas aren't fixing your issue. Maybe someone else will come along with another idea.
I'm pretty sure we are correct.

This is EXACTLY what I experienced, noise and all. Sounds like I need to take my phone apart and examine that switch. Is it as easy as blowing compressed air (PC cleaner type) through it to clear it?
EDIT: Well, I gotta give it to you guys. You were spot on. I took the phone apart and really did nothing more than tap on the switch directly and it booted right up. I hit it with some canned air just to be safe and clean it all out. It's currently charging back up and looking fantastic at this point! Thank you guys so much. Thanks!! In the spirit of helping others plagued by this issue, it's interesting to note that my power button always "clicked" like it was making good contact, but never worked. As soon as I cleaned the switch, it started working, the click stayed the same either way. Moral is, even though the power button feels like it's working, CHECK IT!! :highfive:
