As translate now offers offline translation I want to move that big amount of data to external SD if this is possible. I am on 4.2.2 custom AOKP ROM .

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm looking for a solution to this as well. Using a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505 with Android 4.4.2, would like to transfer the offline translation data from internal sd to external sd (want to download all possible languages before travelling, won't fit on internal sd).
Google Translate is automatically creating a folder on my external SD in the same place as on the internal SD, but not putting any files in it. Results from a google search indicated I should just move the data files to that folder, but it's not working. Google Translate still shows them as downloaded (does the same if I just delete them), but if I turn off data and wifi and try to translate something it just comes up blank.
Ideally I'd prefer to avoid rooting my device or using app2sd or link2sd or anything similar. Just looking for a solution for this one app, and maybe a few others. The other apps I'd like to do the same for are google voice keyboard, google text to speech and possibly some GPS software (if I install any). Really just trying to create a micro SD card to use when travelling while keeping the internal memory free for everything else.
If there'd be some way to duplicate this data onto another phone as well, without re-downloading it that'd be even better.

Hi there,
I could be wrong here but, I have the Big brother S4 i9505.
Just tried the instructions above, and it did work.
I think each time you do a download with the app it will save the new downloaded pack to internal storage, then you have to go to the internal storage, cut, and paste new stuff to sdcard each time.
But so far the app itself has not tried to re-download the packs I have moved over to the sdcard to internal storage, just new ones I have chosen since.

Hi, you says "whole folder" - you mean all with the icon ? I made that that way, does it make any problems speed etc, should I remove anything on internal sd ?
Something funky about folders and or permissions that seems specific to Google Translate, of course with other factors, perhaps something like this:
In order to have the proper permissions maintained as the material is moved the steps in the posted instructions are all important because certain rules of file/folder copying/Moving/creating will be followed by the system (as with PC or network permissions).
In this case it seems that the material must be moved into a folder that was created by the same user that is moving the material so it inherits permissions that make it accessible to that user later in the app.
If there is no such folder on the external SD and the user creates it according to the provided instructions I can see how this works for some people however.
On my phone, and most likely others, that folder already exists having been created the first day I had the phone by ??some app or system function?? as apps got installed and the phone got configured. So, because I don't own the location that the files are being copied to, the files end up with the wrong permissions. Consequently even though they are physically present the app cannot access them.
Since that folder structure may be important to stuff I use I don't really want to fiddle with permissions within it, not that I know how to do so anyhow. Also there is this -
Titanium Back stalls when trying to backup Google Translate.
I would imagine there is some way to work around this or....Google could provide an option to save to external storage (good golly what folly for the failure to provide that).

Yes, that would be the whole folder that is named "com.google.android.apps.translate". That folder will get recreated if Google Translate is re-installed. If you successfully get it onto the external SD you would want to delete it from it's original home or the system would just use it there instead of where it was copied to. If the test fails you would (as was the case for me) want to uninstall Google Translate and delete the "com.google.android.apps" that you copied there before reinstalling Google Translate.

But is there a way to prevent Translate from using external SD?
Each time I insert the SD, Translate stops offline translation. It automatically creates its empty data subtree in /storage/sdcard1/Android on each run if SD card is present. Only card removal restores offline translation.

I've not played with this for some time but am not surprised to hear what you've experienced. Microsoft Translator, which is quite nice, allows ofline language packs to be stored on external SD and used off line for text translations so I switched.

As I explained, Google Translate allows them to be stored in external SD too. But the problem is that GT forces external SD to be used if present. Even if you had downloaded offline files to the internal memory while SD was not present, GT forcibly switches to external SD as you insert it. Since it contains no offline files, GT stops offline translation until you remove the SD.

AFAIK Google has never officially added any functionality to store language packs on external SD, and the effectiveness of workarounds may vary across to Android and ROM versions. This makes it both odd and ironic that you are being forced to use external SD when that is just what others are trying but unable to do.
I'm not sure how to fix your situation but I'm inclined to look toward what it is that is allowing the offline files to be saved and used from an external SD in the first place, which could be due to one of the following:
- New functionality in Google Translate? (unlikely).
- A quirk of the Android version and ROM that you are using perhaps allowing storage on external SD in your case but not others?
- The result of a workaround applied in the past?
- Using Marshmallow with Adoptable Storage (ext SD used as internal).

I use Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm (Android 5.1.1) and Mi Max (Android 6.0.1). All other apps that don't offer an explicit selection, use internal memory (/sdcard/Android/data).

Nor have I. Although I strongly dislike adaptable storage I had to eliminate it as a factor.
You may not want to take your testing this deep but, I would wonder if the same thing occurs with a different and completely blank SD card which has nothing on it except what you are testing.
You are rooted,
1:Create any folder on your sdcard
2: Copy (Preventing mistakes instead moving), all the downloaded language data to the new folder on sdcard
3:Test the following commands using terminal emulator:
busybox mount -o bind /mnt/yourSdCard/yourNewDir /data/data/com.google.andrhoid.apps.translate/(the_app_languagedataDir).
Open the translator and test.
If does not works, due to sdCard permissions (some data on sdcard is unusable because fat permisions on unix),
You will need create a virtual disk using dd command with the specified size of your language data, on someDir inside the sdcard, format the disk in ext2 fs, mount the disk inside the /data/data/com.google.android.apps.translate/(LanguageDir), and finally, move the language data contente (STRICTLY FOLLOWING THE CONTENT PERMISIONS), and test again.
That is all.

- Uninstalled GT.
- Rebooted the phone.
- Inserted a freshly formatted (FAT32) SD card.
- Installed GT (5.2.0RC10).
- Downloaded an offline language.
- Language files have been placed to the /Android/data/com.google.android.apps.translate on the SD card.

When you say "SD card" do you mean the external SD card? If so, then I'm totally stumped about this one.
[EDIT] One more thing. I could see how, if the app is stored on external SD the data might also be saved to external but the last time I tested (months ago) even with app on external SD language data only saved to internal SD.

No matter where the app itself is stored. getExternalFilesDirs() return a list of all external data storage paths starting from a primary one. If there is an "internal emulated SD", it is the primary storage. In old devices with small internal memory, only external SD card can be a primary external storage.

I know. And it once again confirms that GT uses a strange storage selection logic. No other app (I have more than a hundred) behaves like GT.

I want to change the backup directory of Titanium Backup to the external SD card. But in the preferences, I can't choose any other directories except the current one which is in the internal SD.
Is there any way if doing it?

It hasn't really got anything to do with the Galaxy S II (the name of this forum), but Menu --> Preferences --> Backup folder location, is where you set it. You might need to tap the back button to go to the parent folder, which is described in the app. Works fine for me.
Follow the previous posters instructions, but first;
Copy the titanium backup folder from internal sdcard to external sdcard. Then do the steps previously outlined. You will then have 2 directories to select one only. (ie. It will "detect" the new location after scanning). Delete the redundant TB folder if you wish.

It doesn't work for me it keeps on going back to the internal storage, even when the folder is erased.

Do you actually have an S2 ??? I can't see in any of your posts or signature ............. If this is the case, better to post in your own device Q&A forum.
This is an extremely old thread and newer firmware is out. If you have KIT KAT, you may require mod /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml file to permit applications to write to external sdcard. For this scenario, easiest way is try some of the play store apps (root required).

i can navigate the dir/folder but it will not allow me write , it allow me write only on one folder that is on internal SD, and i want to make backup on external SD card.
i am on note 4 SM-N9100 , KITKAT , Rooted.

Easy to use one of the many kitkat sdcard fix apps in Google Play. Blame Google, not Samsung.
the app on google play fixed it for me.
backups on ext card now.
so the deal here is that i wanted to put a 16gb sd from 8gb that i was using. i had the old sd card (8gb) in my phone, i copied the whole thing on my computer's hard drive. put the new one in my phone, then formatted, then copied back everything from the computer.
Now, i only see 129 apps on the phone out of 285 i used to have. most of the apps i used to have were moved to sd using apps2sd.
i tried searching but i found results regarding how to backup before using new sd, or how to format etc. if i got blind for some reason and have missed the thread can someone please direct me to the right thread? or else can someone please help me that how can i get those apps back?

According to me , you have the hidden files and folder disabled on your PC. So enable it, the from your old sdcard(8gb) copy a folder named ".android_secure" and put it in 16GB, then check again if that worked.

If you do that you may be subjected to random freezes,lockups,etc. Not saying this for a 100% but usually that's the case. When you install apps and run them certain apps place folders on your sd card that are linked to the app. Also if you move apps to your sd VIA program/mod they are stored in the android_secure folder located on your sd card. When you format,move,alter,etc the folder from the sd or alter the contents inside of the .android_secure folder you remove/break the links, and just dropping the folder back on the SD will work but in most cases it dosent restore the links correctly from my understanding. IMO your best bet is to just uninstall the apps you had moved to your sd and then reinstall them. Also for future reference don't move or alter the
.android_secure folder folder if you have a nandroid that has some of the apps you installed moved to the sd. This is just my understanding. Hope this helps

use a linux based system to copy the files and folders over...it overtakes the permissions left behind in a windows format

To start with i have my S3 two days now and i absolutely love this phone...:')
But,after installing lots of games my internal memory has gone full and i can't download any data in-game because i have low storage space...
My external sd on the other hand is around 10gb free but when i try to move the data to the same folder on the external the data isn't identified by the game and it asks me to download again?
It has become really frustrating,it seems i can't do anything about it...
Any suggestions to try?

As the system now uses unified storage all apps will remain on internal memory; moving the data alone to an external SD card will have no use without altering the application to look for that location for its data. i.e. in the GS2 you had a move to SD option since the phone was partitioned. With the S3 however this option is not there which means that when an application is downloaded all of its information needs to be stored on the internal storage. When the "Move to SD" option was selected within the S2 or prior phones, it informs the application that its new location is within x folder rather than the folder it was originally downloaded too. Since this option is no longer there then the application has no way of being told where its new location is.
Maybe move to SD could be an add-on with a mod/hack but I am not sure if this is possible. Maybe check with a developer?

In my galaxy s 1 i had no problem having the games data on the sd card,i havent moved and application to the sd but i had the data on sd and everything worked great...now...i don't get it....:/

I did check for you; the S3 physically doesn't look for application data in the external SD (I edited original post after testing few things).. There probably are ways around it as mentioned but you would need to speak with developers for further insight.
If worst comes to worst application developers may have to implement a look in x location first, if no data found, look "here" in to their applications.
As the phone is unified storage you can store applications in the full ~12GB storage space (All the ones I have, have roughly 11.3GB after OS and all is on it) so have you used the phones storage itself for only applications; and the SD for media etc?
I am interested to know how you have managed to fill at least 11GB of space with applications; how many do you have? How is the performance of the phone with this many applications on it? Any lag navigating (I know there shouldn't be with quad core processor - but it's interesting to know if hundreds of applications cause lag between screen scrolling).
You can use an app called directory bind to link the game data on the SD to a mounting point on the internal SD. Search for it and you'll find it, not sure if I got it here or the play store.

To put applications on the sdcard, you could use symlinking (confirmed this works myself).
Install the application, then go to /data/app and move the apk file to your sdcard (/mnt/extSdCard) or inside a folder on your sdcard.
Then type ln -s /mnt/extSdCard/your-apk.apk /data/app/your-apk.apk

Move WhatsApp Media To External SD Card
This App automatically redirects WhatsApp media to the External SD Card in order to save memory: I cannot post the link, but you can search Nicola Rosada On Play Store and download Photo & File Redirect.

@afridi.shahriar, I'm also this need. Can you explain in more detail about how you could solve? My native language is not English but can read and write normally.
I'm with Android 5.0.3 (Lollipop), not-root, and the app the user @Niky20000 said is not compatible with my device (MotoG 2).

I reply here because I spent a lot of time searching through very old posts and trying outdated methods. I didn't know that actually today there is a very easy solution to move whatsapp media folder to SD card. It perfectly worked on my Samsung Galaxy A3 A320FL:
1) Root (I used twrp + magisk method)
2) Download "App2SD" (the original by Vicky Bonick; it's free) and follow instructions on how to create partitions
3) Use "folder mount (app analyzer)" feature, which apparently was not considered in the old posts in this forum, so I suppose it was recently added to Apps2SD.
It's like folder mount, but it's pre-set for some common apps, including Whatsapp. With this feature, you can successfully move Whatsapp media folder to SD, in one clic.
In my case everything worked fine. When I reboot I have to re-mount folder, but it takes one second (just open Apps2SD, tap Folder Mount, slide "whatsapp other").

i want to ask if this way work with android 11
Since updating to Lollipop I cannot download maps or voices with Here. App says: Cannot load maps. My other phone with Lollipop works fine with Here. Anyone else?
I just downloaded it. And I also downloaded a Pennsylvania map. My Default Storage is changed to SD Card. I'll bet that is your issue. I had different problems, especially with pictures, before changing my Default Storage to SD Card.
Wish that was the cause. My default storage is SD Card too. Thanks anyway.

I just ran into the same problem that you did. Did you ever find a solution on how to get the app to load maps or voice?
Here works good now on B322 update. I also uninstalled and reinstalled it. I don't know which made it work. It also saves maps to sdcard 1.
Phone default storage need to be internal for Here to work. It does not matter where you save maps foe Here.

Initially, when I had the phone's Settings->Storage->Default location as SD card, the HERE Map app could not download language or map files. (I am running B322 - Lollipop). The HERE->Settings->Storage memory choices were Internal and emulated, but neither one would allow HERE to download map or language files.
1. Like MT2-User said, I had to change the phone's default storage to Internal storage (vs SD card), and that makes the phone restart.
2. After the phone is restarted, the HERE->Settings->Storage memory choices have changed and are [Internal (selected) and sdcard1].
I changed the HERE Storage memory selection to sdcard1 and HERE restarted.
3. Could now successfully download and install HERE map files and language files as necessary. Tested HERE app and it was now functional.
4. Discovered that the Internal storage folders /.here-maps and /Android/data/com.here.app.maps are not necessary as the maps and language files are now on external SD storage. I deleted those two folders and contents and HERE was still functional.
5. I changed phone Settings->Storage->Default location back to my desired SD card (vs Internal storage) and phone restarted.
6. After phone restarted, I noticed that HERE->Settings->Storage memory changed to sdcard1 (default selected) and emulated. I downloaded/installed more map files which are definitely being stored on my external SD card and HERE continues to function.
