The Google GS4 is Good news For Us on Big Red - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Woo Hoo!
I've been on the Galaxy Nexus for a while running custom ROM's: Currently the latest JBSourcery. I've been lusting on a new phone for a while but am spoiled with the pure Google experience; it would be difficult to go back to a locked and skinned phone.
When the unlocked GSM GS4 was announced, even though I'm on Verizon, this was great news! With the added resources of an unlocked natural Jelly Bean phone out there, it can't take too long for the developers to put together some custom ROM's for our version. I was willing to wait til the fall to see if there was a CDMA Nexus 4 Plus or something but now I don't have to!

agreed!

If 32GB it would be real cool. Knowing Google, Samsung had to remove the sd card slot

i thought i read somewhere that the 32gb S4 is exclusive to AT&T for a while on the US Shores. *shrug* could be wrong.

The only JB rom I have flashed has been CM 10.x nightly
How would a pure JB compare? Is it basically the same?

pure JB would stock android, like the Nexus 4. So basically, you're removing all the samsung features and gimmicks and TouchWiz.

I agree, but seems the only one that will is already carrying the option. Nothing from the other carriers.

Yeah that'll definitely be nice to have but the CDMA RIL will still be a pain as always.

Android 4.2 waiting thread... screw jellybean

Ok rumor is key lime pie aka android 4.2 will be announced next month or earlier... so why wait for jellybean when 4.2 is about to be released. Also why only 6
months or less between 4.1 and 4.2 as it takes atleast a year or so for makers to skin the android and butcher it. I cant wait for google to remove blur from my xt912 nexus razr...

Have you ever tried JB? It's awesome! We have some great custom roms here. You want to wait for Motorola releasing an update to JB? Have fun...
And btw: As soos as 4.2 comes out Google will release 4.3 and so on...Then you could open a "screw 4.2 thread"! If you want have Blur removed from your device go ahead and flash one of the great custom roms!

Thats not what i am saying.. what i am saying when they announce key lime pie android 4.2 then jellybean is yesterdays news no matter how great it is. I always want the latest and now its gonna be 4.2 so google and moto should just skip 4.1 and just give us 4.2 or 5.0

Waiting for JB on our Razr's is wishful thinking and we could be waiting for ever. Waiting for 4.2 is even more ridiculous. Not to diss you OP, I just feel I know where we stand. It's always a possibility that we'll get JB but I doubt it. Mainly for the fact that Motorola and Verizon already have new and better phones coming and they will be more focused on selling those. Once the Razr HD and Maxx HD come out, that's pretty much the end for the Razr/Razr Maxx. Why would Verizon invest in our old Razr's when they have 3 new ones (Razr M included) to make money off of? Remember that Android updates now have to go through Verizon's approval.

Google's plan is to release an major update of android every 6 month.
Since motorola take almost 1 year to update, you're done.
If you want to be sure to have all new version of android, you should buy a nexus or at least a popular unlocked bootloader phone, like htc or samsung.
Sad stories, last time i buy a phone without checking if bootloader is locked or not

I thinking all moto devices will be nexus devices but i think usa verizon will demand like they did on the s3 that all phones be locked with the bootloader as vzw said that the Unlocked requirement only applies to apps.

4.2 is actually still likely going to be Jelly Bean, according to Android Police and Google's server logs (look under the section "Laying the Foundation"), not Key Lime Pie. This may change by release, but for now, it is still using J in the build number, signifying that it is still currently Jelly Bean. If that's the case, it may not be something worth getting hyped about, and we should still be glad if we get 4.1.
But my phone works good now

like how they did 2.0 and 2,1 how silly
Fact: Motorola will give you ONE upgrade which will be Jellybean. On all their devices they usually only go up one more Android version then they ditch the device in order to support all of their new devices which will also end up with the same fate. Enjoy Jellybean. You won't get 4.2 at the least not from Motorola.
I'm currently running JB, in the KOA Resurrection flavor, on my razr and it has made me very excited for the official JB release, when it (hopefully) come to our phones. JB, at least as the rom I'm running, is fantastic.
Like others have said, the current trend for devices seems to be one to two android updates before being left on the back burner, if not being taken off the burner entirely, to allow focus on supporting newer money making phones and devices.

we should always get the latest android as soon as google releases it. now that google owns moto mobility then i suspect that all future devices will be apart of the nexus certified program meaning that google atleast on gsm will push all updates to the phone the same day as announced. However those of us like me on verizon will never be apart of the nexus certified program as vzw along with other cdma carriers play their natzi best to delay all updates for the sake of testing.... well i thought google already tested the stuff anyway... we need to take back control of our phones from verizon (axis power alley) and give that power back to us (the allies power)...

New to galaxy player. Question

Hello community. In a new galaxy player. 3.6 owner. My other devices are the Verizon fascinate and Verizon galaxy s3. I would post this in q and a. But it seems xda skipped it.
I realize this forum is for. 4 and 5. But what are the differences and similarities between these devices? Is there any ability to cross roms or kernels? Is there development for 3.6?
Via my Google Galaxy S3 running magic beans
well the 3.6 and 4.2 do "live" in this section as they are considered the "second gen" of the 4.0 and 5.0, so your in the RIGHT spot but no the 3.6 is the crappy defective "runt of the litter" and virtually no DEVS have one, this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31823330 is ALL there is.

That's a bummer. Got it for my mom for Xmas. Was hoping to speed it up with Aosp (she has never owned a smart device) and would not know the difference. Just wanted to butter it before wrapping.
Also would be nice to have long press volume skip.
Thanks for the response. I was a little lost and confused when Google didn't find any development results.

I make it a thing, when I have to replace something (like my SGP 4.0, because my microSD slot is failing) to look for devices in my price range and then come here to xda to see what the DEV scene is like and if it's strong enough to go for it, thats how I ended up with getting Tab 2 7" to replace my SGP 4.0, it has many ROMs of all Flavors ICS, 4.1 JB, CM10.1 nightlies just started this week just a good strong and fast little device, and since it has a 4,000 mah battery I can go 3x longer between charges.
The only thing that exists for the 3.6 is root on the stock rom. If you are using a 3.6 with a physical home button then use the eu rom, otherwise (capacitive home button) use the us root.

Ultrapixel is included from the presser I read.
“A special edition of the new HTC One running stock Android will be exclusively available through the Google Play store in the United States starting on June 26th. This edition pairs the all-metal unibody design, low-light capabilities of the UltraPixel camera and dual front-facing stereo speakers of the new HTC One with the stock version of the latest Android software, Jelly Bean 4.2.2.”

Of course that would work too. I'm just thinking conversion would be a one time thing.
So much for HTC saying that there was no truth to a stock Android HTC One.
Also, what gets me is, why is the Stock One priced at $599 and the Stock S4 at $649? They're running the same software and the build quality of the S4 sucks compared to the One. It seems the prices should be switched. Are all the media brand specific sheep now? There is no way a stock S4 is worth more than a stock One. It's just not possible. Everything the S4 had going for it (software features) is gone. They're adding $50 for the Samsung brand? BS.

Perhaps, but of those sensors are still in there then it will drive up the cost even if they aren't used.
These are supposed to be developer phones to allow developers to use anything hardware wise the phones come with. Samsung might even release the drivers so they can be implemented into AOSP kernels.
But either way, that explains why the SGS4 cost more. It has a lot more sensors and removable SDcard plus a slightly bigger battery.

[Q] Verizon S4 vs Google Edition S4

I am new here, so be gentle I am wanting to get the S4 for Verizon, but I like the idea of having pure android on it. I know the Google Edition S4 will be released the end of this month. what are the chances of someone releasing it so I could put pure android on the S4 from Verizon? They are a big price difference so I would prefer to save the money.
Thank You all for your time
Do you not root? CM10 is out already for the S4. Honestly I don't even know if the Google edition is coming to Verizon, I haven't heard anything about it.

I would much rather have pure android that CM10, Google said they would be releasing a Google Edition for Verizon at I/O. Available through the play store.
honestly, do what I did. get the vzw gs4, root and install a loki recovery on it ASAP. for all flashing purposes, loki is basically an unlocked bootloader. rom and kernel support is fantastic (touchwiz and aosp). I was debating the same thing you were, even considering moving to t mobile, but I made the jump to the vzw gs4 about 3 weeks ago. I'm happy with my decision so that's my 2 cents on the issue

I actually find some of those features great (like the IR) I don't think CM supprts them, but if the google edition supports it then it may be worth waiting. Or like others have mentioned just root and install the rom when it is ready

No.
IR may eventually be hacked/put into AOSP/AOSP-base ROMs, but the rest... forget it.
This is why a lot of us are going to be running AOSP-themed TW ROMs.
Anyway, the main difference with the Google Edition is that it won't work on VZ. But the devs will port the AOSP code to the i545 soon enough, don't worry.
As far as I know the Nexusized GS4 is going to be on T-mobile only... and as soon as I figure out if the Watch ON will come to AOSP or is supported on AOSP, I'm totally there.

Lol. Grinch of salt? Must be close to Christmas already.
Just because we haven't gotten 4.4.4 doesn't mean T-Mobile or Samsung won't skip to L.
I had a sprint s3 on 4.2 and it skipped the 4.2.2 update and went straight to 4.3. So there's a possibility of that happening for our devices.
Why do threads like this pop up every time some news article quotes an ETA? This is how it goes EVERY TIME for US carriers....International gets the update first....maybe 1-3 months after the OS update is released...then US Carriers "may" see the update based on the carrier's prerogative 3-6 months after that. So don't even think of holding your breath until you see the international version get the update.
But certainly use this thread to discuss upcoming features if you like rather than see another 10 of these threads pop up.

Got it on my s4 and it really isn't much different.

Hopefully I can still upgrade with mobile Odin when it comes out a keep root.
I finally have my Linux box setup correctly so I can make a firmware only file from it too as well as make a custom rom which I can remove the tethering checks and enable 180° rotation too

yea 4.4.4 is not a big deal either for me...... I prefer we get L quickly and not take even longer because they release 4.4.4 a month before
The audio enhancements (low latency) alone are well worth the wait for Android L. RAW format and other camera enhancements will hopefully be embraced and enhanced further by Samsung.
Yes, skipping 4.4.4 straight to Android L with little delay on release would be my preference.

Of course, many things would have to fall into place for all this to happen. But if it did, the T Mobile S5 would be a great phone to have.

Of course, many things would have to fall into place for all this to happen. But if it did, the T Mobile S5 would be a great phone to have.

Great news, Galaxy S5 owners: You may not have to wait that much longer to get Android 5.0 Lollipop on your favorite phone. SamMobile’s sources indicate that Lollipop will start rolling out to the Galaxy S5 sometime in December, which hopefully means you should get it on your own device before the year is over.
SamMobile says that Samsung is making some adjustments to its TouchWiz overlay to make it fit in better with Material Design so hopefully this means there won’t be too much of a jarring difference between what you’ll get on the Galaxy S5 with TouchWiz and a Galaxy S5 with stock Android.
