[Q] Why No Google Wallet NFC Payments? - AT&T LG Optimus G

I think this might have been answered before, but why can't the LG Optimus G use Google Wallet to make NFC payments? I use Vanilla Rootbox (the May 18 build) and it lets me install it, but I've been worried that running it might damage something since I read we can't use it.
My main question: Why can't we use it when the Nexus 4 (by most all regards, the same phone) can?

No secure element.

Since it works for them, I guess so. I don't really know anything about it other than the ATT OG not having it so it will never work.

This may be why.

yeah. And our phone IS isis compatible (well, in the two cities it exists in, which mine is not one of.)

Your assumptions are wrong. Go through this thread and you'll see that it doesn't work. Not without the xposed mod. And even then it's a hit and miss.

So why can't we use the Xposed mod? I just have a hard time believing that the Spring LGOG and AT&T LGOG could be so different (I thought the only real difference was the camera, TBH. I'm probably way off though. Idk.)

You can use the xposed mod. It's not just for us. It's for any phone. The xposed framework has more use than just the wallet mod as well. But if I had to guess, I'd say it'd be hit and miss as well. (besides the radios, design change, and camera, they pretty much are the same)

We don't have secure element because AT&T sucks and wants to use ISIS which isn't even available outside of like two places.

I just wish Isis at least would be in my town.
I have SimplyTapp, but it's kindof worthless for me right now, since I can't use it anywhere (only two cards are available, and my town has neither store.)

Visitor here from the s4 thread. Just wanted to shed some light on Isis for you guys. I for one hate Isis and will stick with Google wallet for as long as I can but if you want to try Isis, you can. They're testing in two markets. However, you're still able to get the Isis sim without being in those markets because Isis works where any paywave/paypass terminals are. Not just Isis terminals. I wanted to try Isis and be open-minded. After an hour on the phone with the rep at the call center and reps at the test markets, I found out the correct item number for the Isis sim which is 'item #41005'. Just ask them you'd like an item shipped and you have the item number. They'll ship it for free. Once you receive it, you activate it and launch Isis. As you're well aware, it won't work with rooted phones. If you're willing to try it, go for it. But for me, I didn't like it at all. It is very limited and clunky. They only support two credit cards but there is an Isis reloadable card you may use if you don't have the cards supported. But I'm sticking with Google wallet on my phone.

And that sim will work with an LG Optimus G? I am willing to try it. After getting it you go to a local ATT store and have it activated? I'll miss a 4.2.2 ROM though :/

As I understand it, the Isis SIM Card comes with a Secure Element in it, so devices like ours (which is compatible with Isis) can use it.

It doesn't use "secure element" like in Wallet. The SIM essentially acts the same as a secure element would but is not Wallet compatible.

Google Wallet for Note?

So I updated Maps yesterday and out of boredom clicked on the more apps by Google Inc link. Noticed that Google Wallet showed up, clicked on it and it says it's compatible with my phone. Downloaded and installed fine. Haven't tried opening and running it yet cause a) I'm rooted (know it won't run with root since update and b) even if I unrooted I read on xda somewhere that if Wallet doesn't find the secure element that it will show an error and will never work on the phone again.
I'm running stock rooted with cwm. The only things I've done to my Note are installed the nfc.zip, swapped the mms.apk to the international version and installed vvm.apk.

Same here, I noticed it in the market and installed as well. Running completely stock phone, just rooted.

Well when you run it it says hardware incompatible... You raised my hopes up for no reason...
It's the same with any other non nexus nfc capable phone. We do not have the secure element so it will not run. It's almost comical how many times this has to be said

From what i've read, Isis is going to be SIM based, so it won't be dependent on the NFC capability of phones. My assumption is that most NFC capable phones have the secure element, it's just not activated or accessible. The problem is, that the carriers are trying to monopolize the NFC system for payments, and any other 'hacked' way seems too risky in my mind.
Hopefully regulators will force carriers/manufacturers to allow other systems/apps to use the hardware, and we will end up with a somewhat 'open' environment for NFC. It all reminds me of the 'bluetooth' lockdown that Verizon implemented when it first came out on phones.
Sorry my intentions were not to get anyone else's hopes up but rather to see if anyone else had the same results. With both my Nexus and Skyrocket Wallet would show as not compatible on the store.
And I also knew about the secure element hence why I said I didn't try running it yet.

I don't think NFC will ever be implemented. People will develop malicious software that allows one to stand ass-to-ass in a bus or subway car and steal ppl's credit card chips lol
I really want to try Google wallet. In the ics leak the nfc option is in settings. So att has to be implementing it soon.

I gave up on Google Wallet for my phones. I've installed ISIS on my Verizon Droid Maxx; and it's okay. Accepted everywhere Wallet was here in Los Angeles, which is to say not many places. Not as good as Wallet in terms of seeing your purchase receipts on the phone, and limited credit cards, but it uses Amex, which is all I ever use.
I'd be happy to install ISIS on my T-Mo HTC One, but of course, T-Mo is way behind Verizon in rolling it out nationally. My VZW Maxx came with an ISIS SIM, and you can order one on VZW website. T-Mo still makes you go to a T-Mo store in Austin or SLC. <sigh>
I'm going to file complaint with the FTC. The Verizon users are filing against VZW with the FCC, since part of their LTE spectrum deal was that they would not block users from installing any apps on their phones.

Modded Google Wallet?

So, there is a modded version of Google Wallet, which allows phones not on the whitelist to use NFC payments.

I have it downloaded and installed per the directions in the linked thread, but it has been stuck on the "just finishing up a couple things" screen for about 30 minutes now. Don't know what that means, but will let you know what happens.
Update : it doesn't work. Left it setting up for 2 hours, and it gave me a settings FC until I got rid of it. It also seemed to use a ton of power, but thankfully I was plugged in.

Yeah, I've been using houstonn's 4.4 PA Alpha and Wallet and Tap & Pay are both configurable, but I haven't had it actually work yet. I tried at Radio Shack last night with no luck. Has anybody else had better luck?

FWIW, I did get a Google Wallet update last night. Looks like it added some cool features, like adding a debit or credit card just by taking a picture.
Hopefully it will also now allow us to use our phones for tap and pay.
Still no tap and pay, it seems. I guess this is because we don't have the secure element? I was hoping Kit Kat and Google Wallet updates would get around that.
Tap and pay didn't work at the two stores I tried it at. I'm using a e970 running houstonn's KitKat rom. The wallet app indicates that tap and pay is setup correctly. Android beam works fine.

Unfortunately, LG OG and most of the phones subsidized by carriers are made with NXP NFC controllers. NXP has not provided the sources/drivers to enable HCE from KitKat. I'm sure the carriers paid big money to NXP to not provide drivers and lock down their customers to using ISIS payments only. ISIS sucks, you need a secure element SIM, unrooted phone, and only can link certain credit cards with high fees. Phones with Broadcom NFC controllers are already enjoying tap and pay with Google wallet.

You'll know if the SIM card is secure-element-ready (for Isis Mobile) if its the fully white sim card. The old ones are half red and half white, they do not contain the secure element. But neither will work for Google Wallet.

So here's an update to the above. I went back to Best Buy and after explaining what had happened, they were very kind and helpful to give me a sim card from another of their Note 3's from their stock. Evidently the card taken out of my was discarded somehow.
So can anyone tell me what happens when I try to activate this sim card? Will I be charged another activation fee? What will the swap affect on my phone? Should I expect any flack from Verizon after explaining what happened?

i actually work at Best Buy and you wont get an activation fee or upgrade fee. Doing a hardware swap is free and can be done multiple times in a day if needed. You actually can do it all online if needed through your verizon account.
The only time you will get a fee for activating a phone is if your are switching carriers to start up a new line or if you upgrade. It used to be called a contract fee because the fee only applies when signing a contract. however they changed the pricing on it so now the new line fee is $35 and the upgrade fee is $30.

Has anyone else experiencing issues with the One Max's NFC being detected at stores?
I'm currently using the Power Flip case, and not sure if that is affecting it, or if I'm tapping wrong part of the phone's back plate.

It's a third-party thing, and being pushed pretty hard by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Thanks to this, I can't use Google Wallet as an option NFC mobile payments.
i remember when I had a note 2, with ATT, a few folks had ISIS on their phones, and we also not able to use google wallet; ISIS adds some files to your phone, that keeps Google Wallet from working..
I think there's more to it than that. Both my current and previous (Droid DNA) phones did not come with Isis installed. It's likely not supported in the Google Wallet app (device not certified). Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile probably made a big enough fuss.
I remember when Wallet first came out, and Sprint was the only carrier to support it. Seems like nothing had changed.
