Thinking of selling DNA - HTC Droid DNA

With all these SIM issues and my phone being used for work I'm completely debating on ebaying my DNA and getting the HTC One. What are your thoughts?

Just read into it, the Tmo/ATT versions, according to another XDA post do not work on VZW.
Ah, if only the S4 had root. If this keeps happening, I definitely need to find another phone for VZW that's been unlocked/rooted.

This might worked for me when I was having issues with my SIM. Take the SIM and and use an eraser to lightly rub off the wax that's on the metal part of the SIM. I did that and have had no issues since. Hope that helps. Also, those work work because they're specifically gsm models. U need the one directly from HTC to get it to work on Verizon.

I ended up putting tape on the back of the sim to make it thicker. Almost taped it down, but that could cause problems. I just hate to keep removing my otterbox to replace the sim, it's getting loose because of it. Tempted to just go into VZW and make a big deal with the fact that I went through 3 of them even though I didn't and get them to give me the S4. Not sure if it would ever work. And either way, I'd have to wait until the S4 gains root.

FYI the S4 has root/unlocked bootloader. However the release of said exploit has been delayed until Verizon's S4 has had a chance to get out to customers to allow everyone a chance to utilize the exploit before it gets packed much like the scenario we (DNA owners) are experiencing.

Any of the Galaxy s4? They will be fully unlocked (for a short time at minimum) and unless the carriers locked them down they should stay that way. Or do you mean the DNA become fully unlocked?
I do (have done for nearly 10 years) Microsoft .NET development, but have little experience with Android development. However based upon what I've heard it at this time it seems unlikely that there will be an unlock (outside of JTAG/Riffbox based) at all. I don't mean to be pessimistic but it looks like quite a challenge that the devs are facing. Being a DNA owner I hope that I am mistaken as I quite dislike not having root

Hmm, what on earth is with the carriers locking them down? It's not like they ACTUALLY lose anything by having them unlocked.
As for the HTC One on VZW. I checked with HTC. The only bands that don't match up are the 3G bands. Then again, does VZW even have GSM bands for 2g? I just compared the bands to the DNA.

VZW uses a different LTE band than T-Mobile or AT&T. Also VZW doesn't use any GSM they are a CDMA carrier. This is why when connected to 3G you can't make use data while making a voice call (CDMA limitation). When connected to 3G your normally connected EVDO (i think) for data and CDMA for voice. The bands differ when falling back to 2g/1g but they are still CDMA.
Generally the reason (supposedly) the carrier locks the bootloader etc down is that it increases the ability/likelihood that a user will brick or otherwise damage the phone. This generates increased costs for the carrier with warranty work/returns. Also there is the potential there for a user to load something that has malicious code on their phone which could possibly cause damage to the carriers network etc.
If you really want an unlocked phone and don't mind paying the full price developer versions of most phones are available. They are fully unlocked, and for example you can get a dev HTC one with 64gb memory for 650$. However it is not compatible with VZW if I remember correctly.

Hmm, yea, the only band that matches up is LTE, otherwise it's GSM. Meeh. It doesn't seem like there are many dev phones available for VZW. May as well just JTAG if I end up swapping out. No clue what I want to do at this point. All I know is I can't switch providers and that the apps I use for work require root since I work with network monitoring.

I'm going to get either an s4 or a s4 Mega depending on the features it brings. HTC one has too small screen size. Haven't ordered JTAG because almost everyone I see that has had that done has at least a broken tab on the case from prying it open/close. That kind of stuff bugs me to no end, and I'm going crazy without root access. So my time with the DNA is probably going to end in the next month or so.

If I did it, I'd have to buy the S4 outright, then sell my DNA. I'd pay quite a difference, unless I can convince VZW in store to trade my 6 month old DNA out for an S4. Might be worth a shot, or just straight humiliating...what do you think? How are you going to do it?

I'll buy the s4 outright for the 650 or so. Then sell the DNA on craigslist or swappa and hopefully get around 400$. If your at the 6 month mark your not getting them to trade it out. Your other option is to look for someone selling an s4 on craigslist that can't afford it or needs the money.

No matter how we do it, it's a lot of money. Worse to worse. Buy S4, play with it, hate it, resell it.

i717 vs GT N7000

Hey guys
I just bought the international version of the note N7000 a month ago and now they are available here in Toronto. Rogers and Bell has them and they seem to be the AT&T i717 version. I went to purchase the Flip Cover for the note but the AT&T cover does not fit the international one. So in order to do so I was planning on selling my International Version to get the Bell version.
Anyone got any suggestions or comments in the difference between N7000 and i717? Also can i unlock the phone to use another sim card?
or if someone has the international cover black and lives close to markham, toronto msg me too!
You should be able to find a flip cover for the international fairly easy online.
However, there are pros and cons to either version. The main differences are:
International has the Exynos processor, i717 has the Snapdragon. Either processor is adequate, however people seem to have more love for the Exynos.
International will recieve ICS sooner, as it is scheduled to be released within a month I'm pretty sure. Hoever, the i717 will receive it this year most likely, and being as you are in Canada, your i717 will likely receive it before the US version.
i717 has LTE, international only has HSPA+. However, if you are going to unlock it for another carrier, it is unlikely that you will be able to use LTE on the i717. Also, if you are not in an LTE area, it doesn't make any difference until your area has LTE.
You cannot use international ROMs on the i717, and vice versa. The i717 will still have a great community once things ramp up though, so you will likely be happy ether way.
If you choose the i717, you will have warranty through your carrier.
Either way, both phones are great, but you will be able to get the subsidized pricing on the i717 through your carrier with an upgrade, so it will be slightly cheaper, though you will be locked into a new plan.
From what I have heard, there is various success with which carriers you can use your device on if you carrier unlock it. Best to do some research into which other phone service you are wanting to use, just to make sure it is possible before buying. I suggest contacting the other carrier and asking if they will support the unlocked i717.

I had the i717 and sold it and bought an N7000. LTE in Vancouver is so hit or miss that it wasn't worth having the phone set on searching for LTE and wasting battery when it wasn't available. For me, HSPA is fine in terms of data speed, and the bigger dev community was the icing on the cake. They're both excellent devices, but the N7000 satisfied my needs more than the i717.

International devices will always be better than the US version. Because it has to go through the hands of AT$T first before it reaches the consumer. Only advantage the AT$T Note has is LTE.
My opinion, yes. Hands on experience, yes too.
Edit: Perfect example, since there so much talk about it.

Which yields the capability to run with an AWS provider like Wind Mobile Canada.
If I were the OP i'd be selling it too, since the i717 has much more potential now that AWS 1700 can be flashed on demand
while the international version can only do NAM bands
so the switching the phone due the cover thing... that's a ver weak excuse
it's so cheap and easy to find international note covers or accessories on ebay with free shipping or even any of the local shops in the malls

I could be wrong, but the International version doesn't have NFC built in at all, while the AT&T version has it, just disabled. So there's that as another advantage. BTW, love the redirection.

Advantage? AT&T disabled it. How is that an advantage? Is yours enabled? Why cripple the phone when it is clearly capable of doing it.
Edit: Not trying to start anything, but my point is that ATT tends to cripple the phone one way or another. Yes you have NFC, but why disable it? If the phone came with it, don't prevent the end user to use it. Or at least give you the option to enable or disable it. It's your phone.
When I first got the Galaxy S Captivate, I was wondering how to turn on the front facing camera. But it's just two holes that looks cool there

Yea, huge deal breaker. And NFC is so much fun.
BTW, I have both. So don't know why you guys are getting so defensive. I'm just saying... Which is an opinion from my experience.
It already has been...the mod with the .xml files for the I717 already available and working!
No NFC is moot.

Yes but I have no reason to enable it. It's not a deal breaker for me like I said, I'm just saying ATT shouldn't of disable it in the first place.

[Q] Are you really okay with what Verizon does to your phones?

I'm posting this here because the Note II is a prime example, but we could also look to the Galaxy Nexus, which is two software versions behind and can't really even be called a Nexus at this point.
I helped my boss set up a Note II and was showing him some features I thought he would like. The first one was the "blocking mode" (do not disturb), which my AT&T model has, as does the International model. It was absent. It first, I thought I just wasn't seeing it or it was moved, but a google search confirmed my fears. I learned later that Verizon removed this because they have a competing service.
Then, I was looking for the S Planner widget (the full screen calendar version) because, as an executive, it was a good fit for him. It was also missing. I'm still baffled by that one.
There is also the branding, including the home button. Verizon seems to treat their phones like Stock Cars these days. The bloat, the missing features (HTC Hub on HTC devices), the numerous modifications, etc.
AT&T is far from perfect. They put a lot of bloat on their phones. But out of all of the Android phones I have bought in the last few years (since they restored "unknown Sources"), I have not noticed them actually removing a lot of features. They did remove screen modes from their version of the GSIII, which was confusing, but otherwise they have just been content with adding bloat that you can disable.
I know Verizon has great coverage, but does it ever really bother you that they remove/modify so much functionality on the phone? Sound off in my poll. I'm curious if I'm the only one who hates Verizon for this. To me, it wouldn't even feel like my phone. It would feel like Verizon's.
TLDR
Removed features (blocking mode, S Planner Widget)
Nascar envy (Logos everywhere)
Severely delayed updates
It sucks but what you gonna do, you know? It's VZW.

Doesn't it say something when the first thing you have to do with your new phone is root it and install your own software, though?
I just bought an Optimus G from AT&T. It had a lot of bloat, but I disabled it all and I'm happy with it otherwise. At least all of the intended features are there.

Going off of your list, because yeah it was tl;dr:
Splanner widget might just be broken (its in the rom). Blocking mode doesn't work on Verizon (afaik).
Logos do suck. Samsung is slow on updates already.
Also, I compiled 4.2.1 for my Gnex. I still call it a Nexus.
You know what, I use to be a strong and proud supporter of VZW. I've been with this company for over 10 years now and over the last 5 years i have progressively become more and more displeased with my service. Yes there coverage is the best in the nation. However, in my case i live in NJ, all 4 major cell phone providers cover the entire state of NJ. I hardly ever leave this state unless its going to one of the surrounding cities (NYC PHL DC) and those places are all covered by all major cellphone providers.
With all the limitations VZW puts on the phones, I do believe I will be changing carriers in 2 years (as i just upgraded both my lines tot he note 2). As of now, i want to kick my own butt for upgrading/extending my contract i should of switched when i had the chance.
I get what your saying and it pissed me off on those same exact points. I decided to live with it because I would have rooted for other mods anyway eventually, but probably not as fast. I couldn't wait to get the note 2 and decided to upgrade instead of waiting a few months and going to another carrier. Since this phone is worldwide I'm not worried about updates. I just won't be waiting for Verizon. I think I'll be content for longer with this phone and when I want the next big thing I'll wait till my contract is completely up and switch carriers. Sprint just got lte here so maybe it will be mature in a couple years.

Do you hate what AT&T does to your phones? My phone came with multi-window and didn't need to wait for an update to enable it. Maybe you should go complain to AT&T for not giving you multi-window at launch.
S-Planner, as mentioned is in the ROM, but not functional, and blocking mode, even when enabled, doesn't work. It's entirely possible that with an OTA, S-Planner will be fixed. Blocking mode may be network related. You know, since AT&T is GSM and Verizon is CDMA, but I doubt you've given that any thought.
Also, delayed updates? Yes, the Nexus has delayed updates, but it is still ahead of most other devices. Also, how long does AT&T take to update phones? You don't have a lot of room to talk there because they aren't so great in that department themselves. How long did the Infuse 4G take to get Gingerbread?
Does it suck, a little bit, but it's nothing to go and create a whining post about, especially if you don't even own the phone.

Okay, you need to chill out. This isn't a "Verizon vs AT&T" thread. I acknowledged that AT&T was far from perfect. It is my opinion, however, that Verizon has been much worse in this area lately. My experience being based on several years of service with both providers.
My role in my company puts me in a unique position to use phones from all of the carriers, so yes, I do have room to talk. I also have years of experience in mobility. I'm not "whining". I was asking for feedback from the community.
I suggest you check your attitude. This thread wasn't a personal attack against you or any other Verizon customer.

At least Verizon has never disabled sideloading. Carriers suck. All of them.
My post wasn't a personal attack, and really has the same basic tone as your OP. Your OP is essentially "VZW sux, let's all go to AT&T", I'm pointing out that AT&T isn't really all that much better, but you don't see people coming into AT&T forums and saying "AT&T sux, lets go to VZW". You pointed out a bunch of faults with Verizon, but seem to forget issues with AT&T. Their track record for OTA updates isn't that much better than VZW, significantly worse in some instances. How about network coverage? They do a good job of screwing their users on plans and plan features too. Your phone supports video chat over cellular, but your data plan doesn't. How is that different from removing/limiting software? Maybe I'll go create a thread in the AT&T Note 2 forum to voice all my complaints with AT&T service then...

No, YOU INTERPRETED my thread as "VZW sux, let's all go to AT&T". You should probably take a moment to recognize that.
I'm not advocating for any carrier. I would prefer unlocked devices, if not for the lack of LTE. When AT&T had side-loading blocked, I hated them for it and yes, the Facetime over Cellular was a dik move, too.
But I also love Smartphones and these days, AT&T does much less damage to the device than Verizon (T-Mobile and Sprint treat them the best) and it's something I'm hoping that AT&T doesn't suddenly decide is okay (again).
Getting my hands on the Verizon Note II really drove it all home for me, thus my post here in the Verizon Note forums asking how other users felt about it.

In regards to this list
Dont care cause I wouldnt use these things.
the home button logo is annoying
AOSP roms are better than stock anyway.
Coverage and reliability of the network far outweigh the downside of an annoying logo. I wanted to switch to Tmobile cause of their pricing but tried a month and coverage was simply not good enough. Friends in my area that have ATT and Sprint complain about coverage all the time. In the end I agree with Adryn. All the carriers blow donkey. For me the least of the evils is VZW.

I interpreted your post to be the same as Imnuts mentioned.
So either your worded it poorly, or there is something in the water.
Clearly you are angry at Verizon and felt the need to vent. Yeah, I am not too pleased with them as well, but so be it. You make it sound like everything is a constant measured response to screw people. Blocking Mode wasn't blocked because of a competing service. It just doesn't work. Do you ask Samsung to recode it to be removed, or just hide it? I doubt they cared. They just told Samsung to deal with it. You can bring it back. It doesn't work on Verizon though. Splanner widget is probably an oversight, and time will tell.
HTC Hub isn't on devices because they SHUT DOWN THE SERVICE. https://www.htcsense.com/
Otherwise, who knows, maybe it would be there on future devices. That service too didn't entirely work right on Verizon and was very limited to the devices it supported everywhere else.

I think his post did seem necessary since you don't seem to get it. You point out good things about Att and trashed VZW. So others did the opposite. Everyone seems to have read your post that way. Perhaps you need to learn how to articulate your thoughts better.

Yeah, because the way everyone READ my post (I'm pretty sure you mean "interpreted") is my fault. I can't control when Verizon fanboys decide to be defensive. I posted a neutral poll with feedback from my experiences. I'm not the one trolling here. I suppose it's just easier to troll than to actually read my post and think for yourself.

A few words for my fellow Photoners

My contract with Sprint is going to be up soon and, sadly, I am moving on to a different device. Although my Photon was a great device the unfulfilled promises from Moto/Sprint and lack of a trouble free ROM above Gingerbread leaves me no other suitable option but to upgrade. Tie that to the fact that I have moved to an area where Sprint service barely exists and my P4G's fate is sealed.
That said, everyone here in the Photon forums will be missed. There are some very talented dev's here that I owe a great amount of Thanks to. Loki, th3bill, jokersax and so many others made it possible to unlock much of my device's potential. If only Moto would have coughed up what they promised the Photon would have truly been a formitable device for anyone to reckon with.
Anyone have suggestions on the best place to list a near mint Photon4G with an unlockable bootloader? I'm sure it could possibly be of some use to a devloper somewhere.
(Mods please don't delete, I am not trying to sell here. Just want to know the best place to list.)
I got a Photon Q used for $100. No LTE here yet, but was able to Unlock bootloader and running CM10.2

Sounds like a good deal. For me I'm going to Big Red, Sprint has no local service here (only roaming) and everyone else is either more $$ or bad service (did a lot of research). So I gave in and am getting the GS4.

I switched to ATT for the same reasons you're talking about Verizon. I also got the S4 and I LOVE it. It has the best battery life of any phone I have ever had, bar none. I bought two extra batteries and a charger, as I always do when I get a new phone, it's been two months now, and I have yet to use them. One day I got the battery down to 17%, but otherwise, never below 30%, and I do use the phone a lot. I don't miss my Moto phones at all. Never again. Regarding selling your phone, I think they promote swappa around here. You could always use craigslist too. But if you're in a position to consider it, as I was, think about donating to one of the developers. I donated my phone and honestly hope some good has come of it.

For me, I cannot think of a phone I want LESS than this moto phone. They used to have better radios but I don't think that's true anymore. My S4 works everywhere I've needed it. No dropped calls, 4G service that's much better than Sprints service, and we had 4G LTE here in Houston. Step away from the moto addiction, you won't be sorry you did. There is GOOD life without moto, and Punit Soni doesn't need your buisness, trust me on that. That guy has deluded himself about his honesty and ethics, to the point that he doesn't even realize he talks out of both sides of his mouth.
I agree with the sentiments expressed on the development here, and the community that was built. It was the friendliest, most helpful group of people I'd ever been around bar none. I miss that a lot, but I haven't missed the photon for 5 minutes. Well, I kind of missed it while I used the Galaxy Nexus I bought off ebay for six months, that thing had horrible battery life, but otherwise was an equivalent phone. Since I've had the S4, not missed the photon for a minute.
Thanks retailguy, you're the second person that has told me good things about the GS4. Hopefully I'll get the MDK build instead of ME7 when I pick it up this week.
I'm ditching smartphones completely and moving to the Omate TrueSmart. If I'm going to loose Ubuntu for Android functionality I see no reason for me to waste my money on a smartphone.

Most likely. Motorola has built a website to unlock the bootloader. But beware, the moment you use it, your warranty will be voided.

Truthfully, I don't know which build I even have. Other than access to wireless tethering, and removing the ATT bloat, I see no reason to even root the phone. It's THAT good.

Yep, you're right. Not having Verizon, I forgot about that. Unless someone finds an exploit, the bootloader will stay locked. And considering that no one has found an exploit for the Photon, it's doubtful that anyone will find one for the X. Personally, I believe that's why Motorola never unlocked the photon bootloader, it was their unofficial "test" to see if the community could defeat their security. But, I've also been accused of being a bit paranoid too.
You must be talking about the Photon Q. I remember reading that before it was released. The Photon 4G was put out with an unlockable bootloader. That was the reason I picked one up. Mine runs CM10.2. I really like the features that Cyanogenmod puts into their ROMs. That's why I'm hoping to get the MDK build. If I do CM will be on my GS4 in a matter of hours.
If you are on Verizon or AT&T, expect every phone you buy to be locked down tighter than Fort Knox. To the people looking for the MDK build of the S4, YOU WILL NOT FIND IT. YOUR PHONE WILL BE PERMALOCKED OOB. The turnover was brutally fast, and 99.9% of all new units after the OTA were shipped with ME7 pre-installed. That's for both carriers. Unless you buy used or can verify that it wasn't updated. My friend has the AT&T one, and I keep telling him that I feel his pain haha.

Motorola pushed an update that locked the bootloader. Anyone who had 2.3.4 and accepted that update got a present of a locked bootloader that no one has been able to defeat. My understanding is if you got 2.3.5 from the factory you did not have this problem. Only those who participated in the soak test have locked bootloaders.
You must have a factory 2.3.5 phone, or one that originally had 2.3.4 and was not updated as part of the soak test.

Wow. This is surprising and disappointing, but truthfully, I haven't even thought about unlocking the bootloader on this phone. The stock rom does everything I want it to do, and since it's the most popular Samsung phone out there , it'll probably be supported longer than I care to use it. It will affect what I buy next time, the whole locked bootloader really ticks me off, but c'est la vie. I will survive. At least they didn't lock it during a soak test and take functionality away from me. I stupidly didn't investigate before I bought the phone. Won't do that again...

Any hope for someone porting over KitKat to our device?
i guess the same people which care about porting 4.3 to the evo will go on and port it, somehow.
if they are at the same pace as for 4.3, in less then a month there should be usable ROMS.

CDMA?
I see gsm has 4.4 , but is anyone working on a port for the cdma version?
A bit offtopic but I couldn't hold off saying it, when do people make questions about CDMA devices and their support (generaly) I'm always like, Why the hell people buy CDMA devices? Why? Why do people give in into carriers locking them by buying something that looks like a phone but it's actualy a lock between their hands, their rights, their pocket and their carrier which grants them to violate you in many ways? They really don't understand that paying nothing or little for a device that actually costs something else in the unlocked GSM version comes with a catch and first of all it means that you don't actualy own the device? When is this USA CDMA Carrier ballooney going to explode? People don't get that what they have in their hands is not a phone, it's an instrument that carriers will use against you, ah, and on top of that, since you haven't paid for it, ofcourse you don't own it.

Some people have TERRIBLE tmobile coverage but can't afford ATT? Where do you go? -> Sprint MNVO or Virgin/Boost mobile. Can afford ATT but dont want tmobile budget network? You go to Verizon. It would be nice if our governments forced ALL carriers to not tie simcards to specific phones but that isn't the case. We can't really do anything about that unless everyone in the US does a boycott or something(which is unlikely). I mean most of us here probably KNOW the downsides to CDMA but we have don't want to inconvenience our self with worse coverage/increased price for our specific needs/budget just to have a phone that takes a stupid sim card LOL. I mean its not that serious in the scheme of things to be worried about...
I own mine. Paid $150 over a year ago.
I pay $25 a month for a phone, with WiMAX coverage btw.
I don't see it getting a whole lot better.
When I don't want to use this phone anymore I will sell it, or throw it in a draw....I feel I have definitely gotten what I paid for and then some....

It's easy, this is what I would do. If I really HAD to go on a CDMA network, I would never buy a phone that the carrier would even have the interest to use it as it does against me, so I'd get a cheap feature phone, and grab a smarthphone on a GSM network that offers nice prices and pay for it cash. I don't think it's really such a big deal that people make it over there, been in the US and in different states and I had anything else than bad reception. If you show that you don't like something a company does they will eventualy be forced to change it, and I don't really see you losing really anything at all. The first thing is also NOT to give in to that idea-balloney that just because a company has a premium device for a funny price or for free with a X year contract thinking after that you actualy own the device. Oh dear, no, you don't, that's the catch, these companies are not stupids.

Possible Good News Towards Bootloader Unlocking

Evening everyone. Just thought I would share an article I found over on Droid Life today.
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/08/07/moto-x-bootloader-unlock-qualcomm/
While there is no specific mention of the G3 (only G2), this is an intriguing bit of news. Dan Rosenberg has pulled some outlandishly amazing stuff in the past, so if he says this a vulnerability that affects all Snapdragon processors, I believe him. The S5 and M8 may have been patched already, but I have a feeling that if we keep our devices from updating, this could be something that works for us.
Food for thought, people.

The LG official unlock?
I signed the thing but I doubt it will happen anytime soon
I don't think the official unlock will be done anytime soon. I just like that those guys are working hard at it and seem pretty confident that they will be able to get all variants unlocked with their method they are developing. It will be a while, but I'm thinking it's very possible still have it before the new year.
I believe the "official" unlock may happen in time. It wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if LG adopted the same practices as HTC in that regard. With that said, it's not something Verizon will ever allow on their devices. In the past, we may have gotten lucky. Now, we only have that option if Verizon and the manufacturers offer us a "Developer" or Google Experience edition. Personal advice would be to lock down your phone via Titanium Backup concerning OTAs, regardless of how enticing they may be, and wait for the Dev community to release their method.

Verizon was not included. You either must use the exploit of find someone with a USB S-Off service card.
Verizon probably won't even let the official unlock work as it'll "mess up the network". Oh FFS.
Verizon just plain sucks as far as these things go...they lock everything down, then also they don't even want us having any Nexus devices. But it's OK you can pay around $650 with tax for a Dev S5 or something that you have to get from Samsung lol

Agreed. If I was in a part of the country with better coverage from the other providers, I would have sold my unlimited line and jumped ship a long time ago. But alas, only AT&T has decent coverage outside of cities in SC besides Verizon, and their coverage drops significantly if you veer off an interstate onto a back highway surrounded by countryside around here. So Verizon it is.
