[Q] Wireless network for phone + tablet + computer? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've just gotten a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 to go with my S3 and now that I have more than one device floating around my house, I'm wondering if there is a better way to share files and data among them than to hook each to my computer separately and then transferring stuff around by USB. I'm looking into Kies, but in the past, I've never been able to get it to work correctly, so I'm not sure if this will work any better on this attempt. Am I on the right path, or is there something different / better than Kies that I could use to have all three devices available on the network for sharing?
I guess I should probably ask if what I want is even possible... I'd really like an always on type of networking where as long as the device is online, I can push data back and forth (ie if my tablet is at home sleeping, and there is a file I want to get from it, I can access it from my phone and vis versa). In addition to that, I'd like a similar connection to exist between my two mobile devices and my computer so I can transfer files back and forth with the computer without having to take up desk space by connecting the device with USB. Please let me know if this is possible, and if it is, the best way to go about doing it in a stable and secure way.
Thanks.

bump in hopes of getting some guidance...

Good friend trying to use modem to get internet on her XP computer

Hey guys long time no see. im usually in the Android Kiaser section, but I got a different question for today. A good friend of mines recently got a old computer. It had a lot of viruses on it and I cleaned them out. Once I was done with that, I had her o/s up and it was running a lot faster than before.
Anyway, she wanted to use her Optimus T as a modem because she doesnt have internet connection or DSL in her house. She is a genius and all, so she picks up stuff very fast . especially in IT and computers .
Well she followed the tethering instructions for XP and downloaded it to her phone. She then hooked it up to her computer and when we searched for the file, it was there but it could not be launched.
Now I advised eher to come here and ask you guys for help, but she is very prideful and wants to figure it out on her own. Now if this were a simple hardwre issue no problem . but since this is a networking issue , and well you guys are far more experienced in these matters, I was wondering if theren were a special program she needed or something like that for her computer to properly launch the program needed for her phone to go online
Well I used to be in the same boat With the internet. Although It wasn't a smartphone. The solution i came up with after days of trying was the phone in question needed an initialization command pointing to the apn of the phone. This was accomplished with no special software just windows built in capability, on a standard sp 2 machine. I would try my optimus but i have win 7 x64. Anyway not sure whether it helps or not but the proper initialization command would be something like AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”epc.tmobile.com” the number to dial should be " *99# "
The post below me is also good. It is usb network instead of modem.

You basically have two options to go about doing this. Switch on Data on your phone ..
1. Connect the phone via the USB cable and select the LG PC suite application, under Tools there is a option of Internet connection using Phone.
OR
2. Connect the phone via the USB cable, do not run the LG suite, instead on the phone in Settings -> Wifi & networks Use the portability and tethering option. The first option is USB tethering, the second is Wifi. Just select the USB one. THis will create a local network between the phone and computer and allow you to access the internet ...
Cheers !

..Well third option is to use P500 as a bluetooth modem to access Internet.
You have to pair the devices and use bluetooth dialup profile. This post is sent that way from my Compaq nx8220 laptop
use pdanet

[Q] Questions Before Purchase (Need Advice)

Im over in Afghanistan right now (such fun) and my wife is going to be purchasing me a tablet to use (mainly e-reader, messing around with it etc and send it over here to me. Ive pretty much settled on the Tab at this point. There is no WiFi, however I've got internet on a computer through a LAN. However, Ive been trying to do some research and find out how I can install apps and what not onto it without being on WiFi, and not looking good so far. Know Im going to need to root it and what not (Ive had a ton of droid phones, so familiar with that). Is the only way I'll be able to update/download stuff on here is by loading the APK file onto the Tablet itself via USB? Or is there a tether possibility, having the USB hooked up to the Tab from the computer with internet, and I can use the Tab as if it were on the internet at that time as well. Anyone who could offer some advice on this, I'd appreciate.
Lastly, If I use it as my ereader as well (using the Kindle app), will I not be able to load books on it due to the fact that its not on a wireless network (in other words, can the books be downloaded and loaded onto the tab via syncing after Ive got the Kindle app on?)
Any thoughts/ideas with any of this or workarounds would greatly be appreciated!
It comes with a usb cable, plug it into the computer and it acts like an external drive. Copy files from computer over to tab, and you should be able to open and install them with the tab. I've transferred a few APK files from my PC to my tab and used File Expert to open and install them. I am not rooted, by the way.
Could you get a cheap wireless router to plug into the computer to give yourself wifi?
Unfortunately we cant use wireless routers out here. So really, the only way for me to get anything on it would to be downloading the APK on to the computer, and transfering it that way im assuming. Would I be able to download just the APK for most apps and do it that way, or am I pretty much limited due to the fact that I cant connect directly to the market over wifi. Thanks for the reply.

Anyone know why WirelessTether would appear as a device, and not a WiFi network?

I've been using WirelessTether on my TBolt for ages. Had to get a new one though through insurance, but now my WirelessTether is showing up in a really strange manner.
On my computer's wifi list its showing up as a "Device" not as a WiFi network. That never used to happen. And when I try to connect to it, it seems to look like a device to device connection (aka: no internet pass through).

Any idea what might be happening?
PS - In related news, my phone can't connect to 4G either when i put in my old phone's SD card in. But with a fresh one it can. (old SD was a different ROM, possible cause?)

[Q] Remote HDD access

Hi,
I have a HTC Sensation XL running ICS, the device is not rooted. Does anyone know of any apps that I can use to remotely access a hard disc attached to my home router?
What I want to achieve is kind of my own cloud storage system, I have seen these networked hard drives that attach directly to your broadband router rather than being inside a P.C and then computers on the home network can access this hard drive via the router, kind of like a central storage area for every one in the household. Well I want to set up the same thing but with the added bonus of being able to access the HDD when I am out of the house as well, via my phone or android tablet. I spend a lot of time in the country on my own and fill my devices with music and films etc and basically I want to access my entire library of media remotely. I have tried drop box, sugar sync, Skydrive etc but they do not provide any where near enough storage space for my needs, at least not for free and if I can achieve the above I will not be limited by the storage capacity of the device.
I currently use Pocketcloud to access files on my PC when I am away from home and this is fine for when the computer is turned on but when its not obviously I cant access anything, my theory is that a HDD connected directly to my router would be accessible 24 hours day as it should be independent of my PC, the question is how to actually set this up.
I have tried using ES File explorer to detect my home network but it wont for some reason, I was hoping that if I got it to find my network it might allow me to do the above however I could be wrong so any advice that people could give regarding this would be great.
Thanks
Ben

A Few Problems When Running Android 4.4 (x86) on PC

Hello, I recently have been going nuts with booting different OS's on my Windows PC, and came across good ole' Android!
There are just a few things keeping me from using it a lot more.
1. Internet Connectivity
Is there a way to use the laptop's built-in WIFi adapter as the "Android's" default adapter? Or would an external USB adapter be the way to go? I've tried USB Tethering on my fiance's Galaxy J1 but it says "No USB devices attached". This would be a big one to figure out for sure!
2. App Compatibility
I'm able to install and use some APK's i've copied from my other devices just fine, but some of them won't start up, force closing immediately. I figured with Android 4.4 most apps should be (and are) able to run okay, but I get about a 50/50 rate of the ones installed on PC working and not. Would there be a way to get around this? I'm no expert by any means but one of the things floating around my head was through editing the "build.prop" of the PC-booted Android.
