[Q] Screen scratched, what can I do? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've just received my tablet Z and manged to scratch the screen! Is there a way to reduce scratch depth on the original screen protector (a kind of polishing). I'd like to avoid to remove the screen protector but if I have to do it, is there a good tutorial (not the one for the Xperia Z phone)? Is anybody already remove the original screen protector?
Thanks

If it's just the screen protector, what's the big deal? Buy a new one and replace or let it replace in a shop with the new one. But if it's a scratch on the digitizer itself, you can use display polish to minimize the scratch but not fully remove it. Or fully replace the digitizer but I'm afraid this will break the watertight seal.

yes it's the screen protector but I'd like to keep it (i'm not sure to find one that is as good as sony's original).
If I have to remove the screen protector, what is the best way to do it without damaging the glass

There was a discussion a few months ago in the Sony Tablet S forum about removing the tablet's factory-installed screen protector. Most everyone described themselves picking at a corner of the protector (some used a straight pin) until enough of it was lifted so it could be grabbed and then slowly peeled off. Several people said they were not going to replace the protector because the screen image looked much better without the protector. Others installed a new protector.

[Q] Factory applied screen protector?

Hi guys,
Is there a pre applied screen protector on the Tablet S? Looking closely at the corners of the screen to does look like it but I haven't found any confirmation of this. I have a scratch on my screen and would obviously like to fix that.
Note that it was exactly like this on my Sony Ericsson Xperia arc where I just removed the pre fit screen protector and found a perfectly unscathed glass screen below. SE however declares that they apply a "shatter proof film" to avoid cracked glass displays
Can anyone confirm for the Tablet S? Has anyone tried to remove it?
Thx
Mine never came with one lol
Are you sure? Looks exactly like my phone. You would never have guessed it is there and you need to look really closely.
I bought one last week, and I can confirm there is a screen protector on the Tablet. I bought it in The Netherlands
- SnEAky
Yes, there is indeed one applied from factory, just as there was with my Xperia Play. I did go ahead and add an anti-glare protector on top of mine so I essentially have two protectors on mind now, but I think for most the hassle and frustration of trying to apply a protector without dust/air bubbles etc, simply isn't worth it as you are already protected.
There is a screen protector on the Tablet S just like most of the Android phones from SonyEricsson.
It is quite different from what you can get in the market. The screen protector from the factory is to prevent cracks or breaks. The screen protectors selling on ebay or whatever amazon are for anti-scatching.
I was recommended not to removed the factory screen protector on my X10 once before but I did it. After removing the screen protector, the glass is quite fragile like iphone's. It ends up with cracks at the edge when I dropped my phone from my pocket. Because I was sitting at that moment, the height is approx. 30cm.
Sorry for my bad english.
Mine has a screen protector. It's a 16gb one from the US.
Thanks, looks like the scratch is just on the screen protector then which is good news
On Xperia phones we know it's fine to remove (providing you don't drop it) but would like to hear from someone with a Tablet S. The my scratches aren't big enough to motivate the increased risk of breaking the glass, yet at least..
I have scratch on my screen already, so worry... now since everyone said there is a screen protector I feel better...
It seems redundant to put another screen protector over the factory installed. I can tell there is one on mine since it feels like plastic when I touch the keyboard...Is everyone still putting the sony screen protector over the factory installed?
I did, but it was a b*tch to do so with all the bubbles. But I managed to get them all, but one. See no reason why not use an extra screen-protection when you got one.
Has anyone managed to get this screen protector off the screen? It's a terrible dust magnet so i want to get rid of it and put on the "other" sony one.

I used a fine kitchen knife and peeled it of gently. I did it on the sony lcd-protection. Not the pre-installed one.

Have you found that the sony screen protector has reduced screen sensitivity... especially when typing?
can't said that I had. Did not play around with the screen before i placed the protection over it. It feels fine and responsive. The only thing is that it gets a little harder when it's hot outside and your hands gets warm, but that goes for all touch-devices I guess.
ditto
the matte finish is worth any loss in sensitivity, its fine with the official sony extra cover on and the matte is a BIG diff.
In fact it was a major selling point for me IMO, saw it in store next to the samsung tabs and the glare was hilarious. It wasn't until I was checking the box contents that I realised that the matte finish was due to an extra cover, but since that was part of the deal I didn't care. I didn't realise that it would have any impact on touchscreen sensitivity (?), in my experience with other devices I've not seen such an effect.
I also bought the matte one and applied it over the "other" (since there seems to be no way to peel it of) screen protector. The matte finish is great, and the touch feeling is much better than before. The original screen felt sticky and kind of rubberish when swiping with the finger, the matte one feels more dry. Great improvement!
Didnt get one in the Netherlands, but myn Tablet was a Demo machine in a store
I bought the official Sony protector and I actually really don't like it. I got it on with no bubbles or dust, and the matte finish looks nice when you put it on and feels nice when swiping etc.
Unfortunately, in my case, the touch sensitivity took a steep dive and made swiping vertical lists, vertical combo boxes, etc a real pain to do. By far the worst thing I've found is that the official protector leaves horrid fingerprint marks all over the screen, which kind of ruins the Sony's lovely sleek and shiny looks.
I love my Tablet to pieces, but the official protector I bought here in Australia is truly dreadful.
Don't be a fool, leave the factory applied protector on. It would be like peeling the safety film off of your windshield on your car. There is no practical benefit from doing it.
Either buy a clear aftermarket one or the matte Sony one, but don't degrade your tablet. If you have kids, however, encase it in carbonite ASAP.

Xperia Active - removing factory mounted screen protector?

Hi Xperia Active owners!
Anyone of you, who has removed the factory mounted screen protector? If so, do you have any scratches in the glass?
Best regards.

And why would one do that?
For example, if the screen protector itself has scratches and doesn't look nice anymore.
Good question, I having trouble taking my factory mounted screen protector off to replace it. Any ideas?
I removed mine after the phone fell screen first from my Bike handlebars on the sharp cut-off ends of another handlebar lying on the floor. The scratches were quite severe and i was totally shocked but luckily the glass itself was perfectly fine. I did buy a replacement protector but was too lazy to put it on. Meanwhile i don't think i need one anymore. My active has had some additional falls to the ground while i was running and the screen is still perfect.
Regarding you troubles removing them, yes it sticks very well but it can be removed from the bottom where the cut-outs for the mic are.

I removed my original screen protector also, becouse of the scratches.
But seems that now I can't use touch screen under water or with wet fingers.
Before, with original screen protector, it work under water with no problem, but now the it looks like screen does not detect the touch on screen with wet fingers.
Had anyone similar problems when removed the original screen protector and replaced it with replacement.
Does anyone know where can I get the original screen protector?

Screenprotector

The xperia s has the shatterproof sheet pre-applied. This seems to somewhat receptive to scratches.
What exactly is the purpose of this sheet? Is it to strengthen the screen, so it won't break so easily if you drop the phone. Or is it just to hold the glass together when it breaks?
If I want to apply a screen protector like a martin fields or brando ultra clear, should I apply if over the shatterproof sheet, or should I remove the shatterproof sheet?

It's there to help protect your display from from getting scratched, damaged etc. If you're thinking of getting your own screen protector, i would certainly remove the shatterproof sheet before putting on your new one. If you dont, the screen MAY end up less responsive.
I am in the exact same boat. I got my phone last night, been playing with it at work and literally 5 minutes ago I noticed that it already has a sheet on the screen?
But last night after picking up the phone I immediately bought a screen protector on eBay.
Should I keep the sheet on the phone now until its worn and scratched and then replace with the ones I have got on eBay?

Yeah I would just keep the original on, and when it's worn out, put a new one on.
I think I'm gonna do that as well. Just keep it the way it is, until it starts to annoy me. Then I'll take it off and stick a new one on there.
I wouldn't recommend taking it off. I did it on my Play and once the screen gets greasy, some random touches start appearing by just blowing at the screen, so you often have to clean it.
I'm getting an XPs soon ...by for now I have my old desire ... never fitted a screen protector etc...
How many scratches have I got?? None...
Do I have to clean the screen ?.. Yes...
The XPs has strong glass ( gorillia glass MK2 ) sure your get smudges etc, but that adds to the charm !
As long as you have a good lint free cloth you should be fine !!

The Xperia S doesn't have gorilla glass, it has glass scratch resistance
Has anyone actually removed the pre applied screen protector? Does it change the feel of the screen?

easy to scratch screen

I am not happy with my new Xperia S or Sony's attitude. I only had the phone a week and the screen has many fine scratches. I am extremely careful with my phones - my original Desire's screen is unmatied. With the Sony statement forth Xperia being scratch resistant I felt I was on safe ground - after all I'd come back to Sony to rediscover the quality I yearned and always had on previous Sony phones since my Z1 back in '96.
I've treated my Xperia the same as those before it - the most extreme condition being loose in my inner suit pocket with my work BlackBerry. And this is exactly what has covered it in scratches - the pitch of the scratches matching that of the cheap plastic keys on the BlackBerry.
And to insult me properly I get the below response from Sony, as if they are sniggering from around the corner.
"Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We can confirm the handset is scratch resistant, however not scratch proof, it is still possible to scratch the screen of the handset, we apologize for any confusion caused by this."
I though this was Sony trying to get back on a level with the top guys... With gorilla glass everywhere else many (me included) assumed Sony's claim of scratch resistant meant some proprietary equivalent.
One Sony Xperia S for sale. ....... Only loads of minor scratches...
You aren't aware that your Xperia S came screen protector preinstalled? Glass underneath is scratch proof mineral glass.
Mate i believe you scratched the protective screen protector, as it is really easy to get scratched, even with a fingernail you will be able to scratch the screen protector ( minimal scratch ofc )
Remove the screen protector and your scratches will be gone
watch from minute 2:40:
is it really the screen or the screen protector?
The preinstalled plastic is not a screen protector, but for keeping the glass together if the screen cracks so the glass is not going everywhere in the air.
I would say as the ppl above, this is scratched, not the screen
Dont worry. U can take it off and use the actually screen protector that came in the box!

Believe it or not.
2 weeks ago i was getting the screenprotection off..
It just wont go off.. No it just wont..
Damn that thing was stuck on the screen..
Got a screwdriver in to it.. Putting it in with power etc..
I thought by my self.. Screen is now f8cked..
Finally i got it out.. Cleaned with a glass cleaner...
Nothing?
Still no scratches.
I've had mine about 5 weeks and the pre-installed shatterproof sheet is showing a few scratches. Just ordered a screen protector from PDair.

Thanks all for the info. I'd seen talk of removing the protector, but had assumed this was the additional plastic sheet that was in the box and that maybe in some places this is already stuck on.
It is very odd that when I contacted Sony they did not point this out or suggest replacing it.
I assume if I search around the forum will I find plenty of good advice on replacement screen protectors? ie one that don't scratch when you sneeze on them!
Any advices on removing preinstalled screen protector? It'll drive me mad!
EDIT: Did it!! A Very sharp knife and a fair share of pressure did the trick!

Try a brando ultra clear or martin fields screenprotector. Both are high quality and much better scratch resistant. Both brands have protectors for the xps that can be ordered online.

If you dont want to see any scratch in your screen, I'd recommend you to search for a 'Matte' screen protector, which I've chosen to be from Steinheil for my past phones: They -are- the best ones offered. A bit expensive though...
They seem a bit blurrier than the crystal clear ones, but I guarantee the 'soft touch feeling', no more oily screens and no scratches makes up to that.
Specially because we have a bright screen with sharp colours so there'll be no problem I guess.
Wait, so there's actually a screen protector on the phone from the factory?
Can I remove it? Any benefits to removing it?
I can barely see it on the glass, almost missed this.

Yes there is.
Look closely to the corner of the screen.
Yes you can take it out.

Even gorilla glass can be scratched with keys or against another hard object like another phone, every phone to date is susceptible even your Desire which doesn't come any protection against ware and tare.
It's toughened glass not steel, Sony is exactly right with the screen being scratch resistant, not scratch proof just like any other mobile maker will tell you and just like all other mobiles/tablets currently in circulation.
Seriously don't put your brand new mobile in with your keys, coins, junk etc, wait a few months at least like I do lol.
Completely agree with ErichSan, I hate the oily/smudgey feeling screen protectors also.

He's peeling of the plastic that is there to keep the glass together if it breaks. The preinstalled plastic filter does NOT protect against scratches (it may work a little bit against scratches). If u really want one who protects, the phone came with a screen protector in the box.

thats a screen protector for the regular xperia z. its misleading in the title as the name of the glass is ultra glass. lol i know armorz is supposed to be coming out with one but they havent replenished stock yet. the armorz one is a bit pricey though. you could also find plenty of them on ebay for pretty cheap. i had planned on getting a tempered glass screen protector, but purchased a warranty instead.
I have the glass-m.
It's really good, easily the best protector I"ve used for the Ultra (the gearmaxx being the worst, then another plastic one which was much better).
Very few fingerprints, hardly ever need to clean it...
Looks very nice. Feels great.
At first it felt like I lost some screen sensitivity, but now I'm not so sure...
I too own a Glass-M on my S4, great screen protector! Feels a thousand times better then the shatterproof sheet. (Even a generic plastic screen protector i have on the ZU is better anyway)
My choice, for Ultra:-
(1) Armorz Stealth Extreme R Tempered Glass:
Pros - round edges
Cons - 0.4mm thickness
(2) SGP GLAS.t Slim Tempered Glass:
Pros - 0.26mm thickness
Cons - sharp edges / not available yet
I am tempted to go for the Glass-M one for $31.50.

I still have the easy peel-off screen film on my Z Ultra....do I simply peel them off then apply the Glass-M ?
What is the shatterproof cover I hear people talking about ?
Thanks guys

I bought my on ebay from china it have not got it yet. Maybe I will get it today. It has been at least 15 days.
I bought a tempered glass protector off eBay (from China) as well. It arrived cracked. I contacted the seller, and they sent me a replacement. It took 17 days to arrive, and when I opened the package, it too was cracked! I'm now going to try my luck with the the Glass-M. I'm dying to use a pen/pencil on this thing but wont until I put a tempered glass screen protector on...
I'm a little irritated by how quickly Note 3 accessories became available - including tempered glass protectors. Seems like most of the big names (spigen?) wont be making tempered glass for the ZU....
do you need to remove the standard shatterproof film on the ultra to apply this glass-m protector? In some cases, Sony voids warranty upon removal of this layer.
Has anyone added the glass-m on top of the layer, and does it affect touch sensitivity? certain screen protectors make the screen go crazy, registering random touches.
very interested in the glass-m, but would like to clear up some quesitons first

Unless you remove it, it's applying a tempered glass protector on top of a plastic glass reinforced protector. So you can imagine how the touch would like that combo...
As stated. Removing the shatterproof protection is a pain. But it is totally worth it. I've never had this level of protection and comfort at the same time on any mobile device before.

Touch is not affected by the tempered glass. Using it with a pencil or any metal object registers as if nothing is on top of the screen. I'll post the photo of the brand of my tempered glass.as I forgot already.

Hopefully that will not happen to me.
Just ordered the Glass-M from here http://theglass-m.com/collections/f...-glass-screen-protector-for-sony-xperia-ultra
Hopefully all goes well and I will receive my order in pristine condition. I need this cause I just realize that there is a deep scratch on the generic screen protector that I bought from the telco.
Finally got my Glass-M. the size is smaller than the screen so its not difficult to align with your device. There is a problem with it though, the edges of the glass-m doesnt seem to stick to the device properly. I have it under a hardbound book right now in hopes of make it stick properly.
did you put it on top of your stock screen protector? or took it out?

Removed it. Can't stand it not sticking properly and also making the device less sensitive especially on fps games. I originally placed it on top of the ASF. Now I'm just waiting for my screen to be scratched then I'll remove the ASF to finally touch the glass o this phone.

Watch out, having an issue after the purchase may just leave you in the cold.
