transfering large films to sd card - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi when I transfer 8 gig movies to my sd after a while laptop says device has stop responding is my tablet timing out or sumat?

If the SD card is formatted as FAT32 then only files up to 4GB can be stored on it.
You have to use exFAT or Linux filesystem (ext3 or ext4).

format the SD card to exFAT in windows 7 above

thx guys its worked:good:

Did anybody try ext3 or ext4 on an SD card with Xperia Tablet Z? Does it work?

Yes, I tried ext4 earlier but it refused to read it and made me reformat...

[Q] SD card file-system and the 2GB per file limitation

As far as I know the SD is formatted as Fat32 and we are limited according to its specs. It means we can't write a file larger than 2GB on it.
Is there any way to format an SD card for Nook as NTFS, ext2, ext3 or anything R/W supported in Windows or OS X natively (or with additional drivers)?

Windows supports two filesystems: fat, and ntfs.
Of those two, Android only supports fat.
So... no.

That's a shame. I was downloading a video file larger than 2GB and then my Nook suddenly got rebooted and I realized about the limitation...
And the file size limit is not 2gb but 4gb

so it's Fat32 then? not Fat.

ok. 2gb is for fat and 4gb is for fat32 I guess.

Window also supports exFAT with file size limit, which is exceeding contemporary mobile storage devices maximum capacity, but, unfortunately, Android doesn't support this file system.
As an alternative, I've tried formating my SD to ext4(Ext2Fsd allows to mount ext2-3-4 partitions on Windows), but NT didn't recognize it.
I found a utility called Drive Mount, it can mount storage device with FAT/NTFS/EXT file systems, but it doesn't support Android 2.x.
I also tried to mount my SD manually, but Nook Tablet handles SD card in a way unfamiliar to me.
If you insert FAT formatted SD card, then NT will mount SD(block device /dev/block/vold/179:17), but if you insert ext4 formatted card(I bet the same goes for ext3 and ext2 too), then NT will not mount anything and /dev/block/vold/179:17 will be inaccessible(the device still will be at /dev/block/vold, but both cat and mount will tell you that there is no such device or address).
UPDATE
I was able to mount ext4 formated SD card via /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
NT thinks that SD card is blank or has unsupported file system, but it is fully accessible for both read and write.
So if you desperately want to watch some 4+Gb video, you need to format SD to ext2/3/4 and mount it to some empty folder on your NT internal partition, I wouldn't recommend using /mnt/sdcard, though.
If somebody interested, I can make a step-by-step instruction for Windows users.

[Q] My Xperia Neo is not detecting a 32GB SD card after I partition it for Link2SD

Dear Friends,
I currently have a 16GB memory card partitioned with a 2GB ext4 partition which is used by Link2SD. A couple of days ago I bought a SandDisk 32GB Class 4 memory card and partitioned it using MiniTool on Win 7 and created a 2 GB ext4 and the rest was FAT32.
I did it while the card was inserted into my Neo. Now, after reboot or so, the phone doesn't recognize the card.
What can be the reason behind this and could you provide any solution on this?
I would be very thankful to you. Thanks.
Try formatting using cwm recovery...
I formatted and partitioned my 32GB SD card several times, using MiniTool, with SD in phone. Never had any problems.
AFAIK both partitions should be primary. First FAT32, and second ext.

You would need a memory card reader for this. Put the memory card into card reader and then insert it into your pc. And format your memory card with allocation unit size as default. But your memory card will still remain partitioned.

no need not use a chip reader, i several time created 2nd partition on my 16GB micro SD SD card by connecting my phone into the PC. If you use "USB connectivity" as "Mass storage mode" we can mount SD into the PC and create another partition using minitool.
Try to create both partition FAT.

Thanks keekoo, the only thing that I may have missed would be that I did not make the ext partition primary. I am already partitioning and formatting the SD card as I type this with your advice. Hope it works.

THANKYOU SOO MUCH. This solution helped me get my xperia play's 16GB SD card mounting correctly. I had created the 2nd partition as logical instead of primary and I was wondering why it wasn't doing anything when putting it in my xperia.
I have been following several guides on how to partition my sd-card but everytime I end up with the phone looping at boot.
I have a xperia v with a 32 gb sd card. the card works but when I partition it to 2 new partitions the phone wont boot.
All help are welcome.

yes, when you using minitool partition wizard to create a new partition and dont forget to mark it as primary. then it can be recognized by your phone.

Hi,
the specs of the Acro S say that maximum SD Card size is 32 GB. Has anyone tried a 64 GB card?

Yes, I did try 64GB MicroSD card on my Acro S. It works fine and great. Haha. For your info I was equipping my Acro S with the ORIGINAL SanDisk 64GB Class10 UHS-1 Micro SDXC MicroSD Card MOBILE ULTRA.

If I remembered correctly, I never used exFAT format. Why don't you try and let me know what's the results?
Now... I've moved to Xperia Z and V. My Acro S... Accidentally dropped into a >2m deep swimming pool and it got waterdamaged! LOL! Was running stock firmware with ROOT as well as CM9.1 by FreeXperia though.
everything always says expandable to 32, I believe its because that's what fat32 support supports as a maximum. but in most cases exfat will actually work they just never state it

No the Acro S does not support exFAT. You will need to reformat the SD card to use in your phone.
Code:
dev/block/vold/179:33 /storage/sdcard1 vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1015,fmask=0702,dmask=0702,allow_utime=0020,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,utf8,errors=remount-ro 0 0
/storage/sdcard1/ 59.4G 58.1G 1.4G 32768

Hi everyone, ive already figured this out.
i inserted 64gb card on acro s as exFAT formatter. it says blank sd card and wont mount.
tried formatting under win7 as fat32 it failed,
Solution:
used easeus partition manager and formatted it as FAT32, it is now being recognized by AcroS 58.99GB.
we just need to format it to fat32 for it to be recognized by the device. techincally as long as the file system of the sd card is fat32 it will be recognized by AcroS
(please note on the file size limitation of fat32 file system)
Quote from wiki:
"The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GiB minus 1 byte or 4,294,967,295 (232 − 1) bytes. This limit is a consequence of the file length entry in the directory table and would also affect huge FAT16 partitions with a sufficient sector size.[1] Video applications, DVD images, large databases, and some other software easily exceed this limit."
Thanks everyone for the idea
I have been playing with this idea for some time...

Many people would recommend "exFAT" file system, also some would recommend "FAT32" but due to the limitation of the file size, i won't recommend it, "EXT4" is good, but may not be a good choice for SDcard if you wanted to view the files on the PC using a "SDcard reader" one day, your sdcard then would be limited to read only, so you have 2 options:
1-format it as "exFAT"
2-just put it in the phone, Reformat the SD card with your phone Settings --> Storage/Storage & USB The file system on the freshly formatted SD card is the type that will give you the best performance with your phone.... in other words....(let the phone choose)

As i told you, Individual files on a FAT32 drive can’t be over 4 GB in size, but in exFAT it has no limitations, if it worked good for you in phone or pc then it's fine, if you faced any problems reformat it to FAT32.

1st off all. Why would you format your external SD card to F2FS. F2FS is only used for partitions like system/data(aka internal storage) and cache. There's no need to format your SD card to F2FS, all you can do now is format is back to FAT32 or exFAT (since that's what most SD card uses) and you should be able to use your SD card back.
Hit Thanks if this help you

It's quite different but any FAT type filesystem will work.
