External SD card speed question - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I thought the data transfers seemed a little slow to my external sd card so I decided to check it. I'm using a Sandisc class 10 64gb card. My internal card reads and writes at about 30mb/s. My external card will only write at about 8mb/s and read at up to 20mb/s. The same card in my GS3 would write at about 12mb/s. Shouldn't these class 10 cards be faster? I would expect the external card to be as fast as the internal. Could formatting be the issue? I am using an app called SDCardTester for the tests.

I've got a sandisc class 10 32gb and just used the same app you did. I'm getting 30.05MB/s write and 31.5MB/s read. I haven't done anything special to my card that I know off. It was used in my Bionic previously.

Wow, that's awesome. Did you format the card in the phone or in a PC? I did both. Also, what directory on the external sd card did you test in? I used the root folder of the external card. The app is kind of a pain to get it to switch from internal sd to external.

I just formatted my card again and tried the test. I can only get 7-8mb/s on the external card. My S3 used to get better speed with this same card. I have no idea why.

Wow I feel like a total noob...it was testing my internal storage. Sorry for misleading you. I tested again after changing to sd card and got only 5mbs write and 15mbs read. So yeah, mine is even slower than yours. I dont remeber ever testing on my Bionic so I couldnt tell ya if this is better or worse.

It is easy to do that with that app. Thanks for checking. This must be the reason the camera features are limited when not using the internal card. It sucks.

You should test the card from the computer too.

Slightly OT here, but the SanDisk Extreme Pro is currently the fastest, but the largest size is 16gb

SD card corrupted:(

Hi have a Lexar class 10 sd card that I purchased ~6 months ago for my Evo. Had issues with other cards, and this was the one card that was rock-solid for me on the EVO.
This morning, my Photon started acting very laggy. Programs would refuse to launch, and it was generally having issues.. Upon rebooting, my sd card was gone..
In windows, the sd card has a partition, but requires formatting now this card was rock solid for me in the EVO, so concerned that it died within 24 hours of having it in the photon

No issue here from my 2 year old 8gig and it has been in since Sunday.

I had problems with the same microsd card, and wound up having to RMA it. I've heard of others who have had similar failure issues. I'm highly skeptical that the Photon actively caused it, as opposed to just poor coincidental timing.

I'm a Sprint Launch Ambassador supporting the Photon and I would also recommend backing up the data on the SD card and reformatting it. Keep me posted on progress.

it was corrupted to the point of not being able to see it in windows
A recovery program that I tried (EASUS recovery) showed the files and gave me the option of recovering them, but since I didn't have much on there, I opted to just format it..

While I do not know about the wintec card, but the Lexar one has been known to do this. There are a few xda threads scattered throughout the forum as well as over in Amazon that have mentioned the card as well as a few others that work for a while and then poof they act like this. it seems to be common with 32GB class 10. Another one that has issues is Patriot (see xda thread) but at least Patriot has acknowledge the issue.

FYI. Estrong's File Explorer does not work correctly on the Photon. I have a 16gb sd card and Estrong's File Explorer will only detect 8gb of it. Use the factory installed file manager instead. I thought my card got wiped when I first got my Photon but that was the culprit. Windows showed all my files still intact.

All I know is that when in Estrong's File explorer I can switch between sdcard and phone memory and it only sees 8gb of my 16gb card. Im very familiar with Estrong's File Explorer. I've been using it quite a while. Not sure what else it could be because the stock file manager on the Photon sees all 16gb of my memory card.
If you're not seeing internal phone memory, internal SD card, and external SD card) three separate locations) then you're just not accessing the SD card correctly.
Try browsing to /sdcard-ext

I have a microSD card in my phone and I don't have any problems with it not recognizing it. Maybe you have a bad card. Make sure the card works or the files you have are corrupted.
I a Sprint Product Ambassador and would love to look into this further to help. I need to narrow it down to any specfics I can get. So...
To anyone having the issue:
What was the brand? (i.e. Sandisk, Lexar)
Size of the card?
Any other information that may be pertinent.
One thing I noticed about file explorers in general, esfile explorer, astro, etc, they detect the internal memory as the sd card and not your actual sd card.
Also, I reformatted my sd card from my 3vo after backing it up, because in general when you put an old drive, or something similar into a new computer it may handle it differently than your previous computer did, in our case our phones. Now this may not be the case, but this is just my thoughts on how it may work. Which could in turn bork your card. Should be okay after a reformat.

Just had my SDcard become corrupted while in phone. Showed "Damaged SD Card" warning in Notification bar. I then had to reformat the card. It's working just fine now. I think perhaps some data while writing to card becomes corrupt.
Others report if you have similar issues.
My card is a 16GB Class 10 Patriot (I think)

WTF is wrong with my Evo and SD card??

OK I'm at a loss. I've searched for this issue and haven't seen anybody else experiencing this problem.
My Evo is relatively new. Had it just about a month now. Still stock. Haven't had any real problems until I bought a 32GB SD card. I've purchased 2 actually and have had the same issue with both. The phone reads the card fine supposedly. Shows 32GB available (just about). But I'm having the HARDEST time copy files to the card. I've got a ton of music, pics, ringtones, etc I'd like to get on this device. I can connect the phone to my PC, mount as a disk drive and copy to my heart's content. But then when I disconnect the phone and try to access some of those files, they're gone. I mean just GONE. The entire directory I just created with all of it contents... GONE!! Not misplaced or deleted by accident. GONE like they were never there. Like I didn't just spend 10 minutes copying 2gigs worth of files. And this happens just about every time I try. I unmount the phone properly, see the message on screen "preparing sd card" and all seems fine. But my music player says there are no files. Gallery is empty. Go back to look for the files I just copied on the card and nothing. Nowhere to be found. Now of the few hundred times I've tried this now, the directory actually stayed put a couple times. I was able to view my pics, or listen to my music. The folders stay right where I put them. But guess what. The next time I try to copy more files, my directories will disappear again. I've tried 2 different brand SD cards with the same results on both. I've used both Astro and ES to view the cards but it doesn't make a difference. I've even used and external card reader and copied files directly to the card. Still no luck. Please help. This is driving me crazy. Could this be a problem with the phone itself? I don't get it...
Well if you have used an external sd reader without success then the problem is not your phone. Your saying if you copy files to your sd,you cant see them after? So it doesn't copy from an external reader?

I strongly believe the problem is the format of your card or your computer.
If you are transferring files from your external sd reader and if its still there when you check, but gone when you insert it in your phone. Then I also strongly believe that you are looking in
/sdcard directory which you should actually be looking at /sdcard/ext_sd/
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I'm saying that no matter if I use an external card reader, SD adapter, or connect the phone directly with a USB cable, the files I copy to the card will disappear "magically" once I dismount the card from the PC and attempt to read on the phone. Usually this is the case. But like I said, a handful of times, the files were where I put them, but disappeared the next time I tried to copy more files to the card. And no I'm not looking in the wrong directory. I know the difference between the sdcard and ext_sd folders.
What brand of cards are they? Do you have the same problem with cards of a smaller capacity?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
This looks like a problem with your computer settings. With some configurations, if you don't explicitly eject/unmount the drive from the PC, it won't actually move the files. It will only truly copy them when you begin the eject process.
I tried a Kingston 32GB class 10 card first, then bought a generic 32GB class 10. Same issue with both. I do have a smaller 8GB SanDisk class 4 card that I have not tried yet.
I made sure to "safely remove" the cards when connected to the PC. I've tried from both a desktop and laptop. Same results all around. I thought maybe the problem is with class 10 cards but I haven't heard anyone else having issues. I also thought to try a 16GB card. But that would suck since other folks are having success with 64GB cards.
I'm about to try to reset my phone and see if that makes any difference. I may be headed back to the Sprint store this weekend.

Where did you buy these cards? This seems like a fake capacity card symptom to me. Try copying just one or two songs and see if they stay. The cards are probably fine but this is something I ran across with a friend's card before who unfortunately turned out to be a fake. I hope it's not the case for you. Also (since the cards seem to be empty for you) run this to be sure the SD card is genuine.
If you actually bought it from a reputable source, then my bad but it's best to get all bases covered.
Now if the above is not it and you had the problem with two different cards, then the issue (probably) lies with your computer/transfer cable. Try doing the reverse, copy some things on the card from the phone and try to read it on the PC. If you need something to copy you can always copy the ringtones that come with the phone at /system/media/audio/ringtones.
Let me know what you find out
I seem to recall issues initially with 32g cards acting up, but I thought only if they were a certain class but could be related? Try the 8g you have. I had issues mounting the 32g I had, class 4 I believe, when I was still on stock. Sometimes it would mount, other times it would dismount for no reason without any warning. I would just know bc I couldn't access any thing on it.

Make sure the cards are formatted Fat 32 to begin with. And yes, definitely try the smaller sd card you mentioned.

OK well here is an update.
It turns out the generic 32GB class 10 card was defective. Was able to verify that with the test utility racer posted. Thanks for that btw. I'm running the same test on the kingston card to see what it says.
I also did locate my 8GB class 4 card and that worked like a charm. No problems copying data to or from the card and definitely no disappearing directories. I just want a larger card. LOL. Hopefully the kingston one is ok after I format and test it.

[Q] Is it me, software, hardware or a bad SD Card??

I bought a no name 64GB Class 10 MicroSD card to replace my 32GB but I can't seem to get my data transferred over cleanly. I've formatted it numerous times (exFAT) both on my PC and my GNote. I have the 32GB card backed up to my PC. I've tried copying from my phone (32GB) to the PC (64GB) and vice versa. Sometimes it will go all the way through without a problem but always only some of the files and folders are copied correctly. Other times, it will throw one of several different errors and the stuff that looked had been copied will vanish. For example, this morning I was copying certain files, essentially one by one and checking in ES File manager to see if they were on the phone's external SD card (64GB) and they were. Then after doing this for a bout an hour it would hiccup and everything I'd copied over and verified with ES File Manager would be gone!?
If it matters, I'm running Windows 8 PC with 4GB ram and 1.31 TB of HD storage. On my Gnote i've tried it with both a stock ICS TW ROM and JellyBeer 4.1.0 with no joy. I've done a bunch of searches here and on Google but nothing seems on point. If it's a bad SD Card, how do I test for that?
When I had a weird problem like that it turned out the SD card was fake. This program determines your actual SD card size.
http://fightflashfraud.wordpress.co...ld-standard-in-detecting-fake-capacity-flash/
Other then that, fat32 is what you should use in Android. Maybe even try letting the phone format the card through settings/ storage. Be advised there will be data loss so backup anything beforehand.

The validator is certainly in my toolbox now. Thanx again. It takes forever to run on the large capacity drive but it was definitely worth. The white lettering is beginning to smudge. Really low class work. I'm getting my money back . . . I think. I think the poor schlub who sold it to me bought and is selling a bunch of them. I think he now knows how exposed he is.

MicroSD unmoounting all the time...

So my MicroSD card (32GB SanDisk Class 10 Red/Grey) has been acting weird lately (since I upgraded from ICS to JB). Not my phone automatically unmounts the card from time to time and I don't know why. I have trying formatting from Windows and from the phone, with FAT32 and ExFat. And I don't want to wipe my phone or install any other ROM or similar stuff.
I will try another card, but is there something I can do to prevent this?
This has nothing to do with your ROM or your phone, it's your SD card itself which is causing this problem. Just try another SD card and I'm sure the problem is solved.

I insist, maybe it's my phone because it happened right after the upgrade, maybe something in the ROM, OS, kernel, or something... so I guess it's a lottery... I'm trying another card now...

Wait I finaly found a solution
Step One: Format SD to exfat.
Step Two: Set SD as Portable in Android
Step Three: Format SD as Internal in Android.
Step Four: THIS IS IMPORTANT. The process will eventually freeze and timeout. Do not cancel it. Let it timeout. When it does do not fret. Shutdown the phone by holding power and tapping Power Off. It will take a while to fully shut down. The time it takes for the process to freeze and the time it takes the phone to shut down seems to depend on the size of the SD Card. My 128GB card took about 6 minutes to timeout and about 12 minutes to shut down. DO NOT FORCE SHUTDOWN*. Let the phone shut down on its own. When it does, boot the phone back up and the SD will be set to Adopted Internal Storage.

It's called exactly that, fat32format. I don't recall where I got the program exactly but download it from a reputable site like like cnet's download.com site or softsonic. Do know that since it's fat32, it will not support any single files above 2gb so no 1080p rips and the like.
I agree with the others sounds like you have a bad card that is on its way out... I had a early sandisk 64gb that one day just vanished nothing could be done to bring it back either... I avoid sandisk cards for now I want wd to have plenty of time to wash the crappy cards out of the market.
Fat32's file size limitation is 4gb!
If the SD card is inside the device better pick exFat.
there's no actual android app that has single files that big so you can use fat32 just fine, just won't be able to save big files on it like ripped movies
