What does replacing the motherboard in my SII mean? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello once again audience,
I have a question and basically the title says it. The repair shop is going to replace my phone's motherboard, so what does this mean? Does the motherboard come with new core components like the CPU and GPU? Because my phone was water damaged, and I would prefer all the key components replaced along with the motherboard so it wouldn't corrode over time. And of course the CPU might have been worn out? I hope my phone's performance would be as good as new...
Thanks

You might as well buy a new phone if he is replacing everything, most likely it will cost more than a new phone if he is to replace everything and there would be no warranty.

Get a new phone. Cheaper and more reliable option. The motherboard IS the whole brain of the phone. You can get an s3 or s4 for basically the same price

Mobo is about 150 bucks.
But well, you didn't say if warranty/insurance covered your device.
If so, yes, performance will be the same as new.

There is some very strange advice in this thread.
There are several other components that maybe need changing as well as the mb.
If it was me;Id sell it as water damaged on ebay.
And if s4's are the same price as s2's motherboards....Ill take 20.

Lol, as he said if S4's cost the same as S2's motherboard Samsung might have shipped 100 million devices instead of the 10 million. (and I am using only a rate of 10x instead of the underlings 20x).

I reread it and he states that the OP can get an S3 or an S4 for basically the same price as the S2's motherboard?? Wtf? here an S2's motherboard is 8k rupees and and an S3 costs 29k and S4 costs 42k I was just stating that it's not like that at all now, and I quoted you because you said something what I was thinking, and what the hell do you mean I was attempting to change what somebody said, I was saying if the S4 costs that less, the sales would go over the roof.
Edit :The sarcasm was meant for the third poster if that's the problem, when I said "like he said" I was actually referring to your statement "if S4 cost same as S2's motherboard, give me 20" which I thought was a good joke.

Right ok.The OP doesnt need clowns like that guy in post 3 saying a s2 mb is the same price as an s4 phone, this is why I posted originally.
Also I wouldnt bother keeping a water damaged phone;as said earlier maybe just about everything may need replaced.
The OP may get about £100 for it on ebay, and if its any help I could possibly sell him a s3 mini for £100.....so he ends up with a working phone with warranty.
I bought the phone for the wife at xmas unlocked for £300,and Ive given her cash to get an iphone5.

There are genuine sellers on ebay like me,or my wife, but we only sell phones that are fully paid for when we buy them.
But if a seller(and theres loads of them) says hes selling because of "unwanted upgrade" then
1.WTF has he got it if its unwanted
2.Means to me hes still got to pay some sort of contract, and if he doesnt pay phone gets blacklisted.
Anyway,I would try a new usb port kit,and if its still faulty, then stick it on ebay.

Research + eBay + Patience = Save Money
I just replaced the motherboard of my S3 for essentially <$40. I bought an S3 on ebay with a broken screen but good motherboard (keywords like 'it charges', 'turns on', 'vibrates', and 'plays sound' come to mind) and swapped it into my S3 in about 20 minutes or so total with great success. The other super important thing is to verify a clean IMEI / ESN number because that lives on the motherboard too {However, I assume you could inject the 'good' IMEI from your old board into the new one with some pain and research. Not ideal.}
Anyway, yeah, the broken phone cost me a tiny but under $100 including shipping and I resold it just now on ebay for $66 including shipping. Big win, as the random tech guy in my town was going to charge me $220 and said it would almost definitely cost as much or close to as much as buying a new/refurb unit. My functionally and cosmetically perfect phone and the fact that my wallet is only ~$34/35 lighter determined that was a bold faced lie.
Disclosure: I do have electronics experience, but not with phones. And this fix was literally about 10 or so small screws and a few adorable itty bitty lil ribbon cable things. Easy day.
TL;DR-- Enter the Google Fu and observe your enemies upon the fields of eBay to fix things for cheap and/or at least know when it's good time to give up :good:

Man it sucks so bad. iPhone 4 is off at the shop having it's battery terminal soldered back on and I really wanted to use my GS 2 but the LCD is like 150 bucks.
Anyone had any luck with AT&T giving a one time warranty replacement for issues like this?

Suck man. Same thing happened to my Captivate. The SGS2 came out 2 days later thankfully.
Maybe you have an upgrade lying around somewhere and can get a skyrocket for 199?
If I were you, id be hunting around for someone who broke just the touch layer and is wanting to part with their paperweight. Also, I was under the impression that AMOLED's are on a metal plate or some such, not a glass screen like an LCD? maybe I'm wrong?

Broken screen after 2 weeks.

I just had a horrible experience today.
I was putting my phone on the fireplace and caught the corner on the edge of the phone.
You can imagine my shock when I looked at the screen and it has a number of cracks across it and looks shattered in the lower left corner.
This was only a slight tip but it still took out the screen.
Has anyone any idea how much it costs to replace the screen here in Ireland.
I only have the phone 2 weeks and this happened. I'm devastated.

Use your phone insurance to get it repaired. Job done.
I don't have phone insurance. Car phone wear house wanted €15 per month and I could not afford to pay that.
I was going to see if I could insure it now with a third party and leave it a week before reporting the problem.

I've no issue with you scamming an insurance company - I'm firmly of the belief that there is a special place in hell for those parasitic bastards. But if you do go legit, I'd expect to pay easily over €200. I had to replace my screen in Sweden and it set me back the equivalent of €300 so I would guess Ireland is probably not that far off.
fonefunshop.co.uk charges about €250 plus shipping I'd guess and will deal with customers in Ireland.
Found this on adverts.ie. €165 but that sounds very cheap considering that to buy replacement screens alone to fit yourself is more than that. Would be wary.
And what CFWH is doing is extortion.

Yes it is you pleb. It's fraud, end of. And the reason we're having to pay £15 a month is so that the insurance companies can recover some of the costs from people carrying out bogus claims like you're encouraging him to do.

I contacted Samsung Repair and they gave me the number for Fondmenders in the GPO. I called them and they will replace the screen for €160.00
Its going in on Thursday and should be ready Friday.
I also get insurance for €37.00 per year with Zurich so I'll keep that just in case something else happens to it another time.
€37.00 per year is a long way off what Car Phone Warehouse where charging.
Anyway I'll know on Friday if I get a happy ending.
Don't you have something like household insurance in Ireland?
Something similar happened to me.. 3 days after i got it, dropped it in SAND (yes, SAND!)
The edge on the left side got chipped, like a small paranthesis ( - it was outsided the used screen, in the space between the used screen and the edge.
However.. 2 days later.. it got stolen, i never got around to fix it
Now i've got a new one..

And since I work for an insurance company don't tell me that the £15 recovers some costs because it's bs.

If your saying that what I was considering is fraud then what do you call it when the insurance company pay an uninsured no tax and no licence driver then put my premium up to cover the cost 3 fold.
Don't talk to me about insurance fraud when the biggest fraudsters are the insurance companies them self.
I have had lots of occasions when the insurance companies screwed me over.

Just to update on the broken screen.
My phone went in to FoneMenders in the GPO Arcade (http://fonemenders.ie/) yesterday morning at 9:30
They replaced the screen within the hour and only charged €159.99
I had got prices from other compaines as much as €270.00
The phone looks brand new so I'm over the moon with the repair, very professional.
I now also have a flip cover and screen protector on the device. Only short of wrapping it in bubble wrap
I really don't want to go down that road again.
I still have my insurance policy on the device so should anything happen again I have that to fall back on.

[Q] Buy SGS3 of tmobile and terminate the contract

Hello all,
How about buying an SGS3 of tmo and than terminate the contract..
I don`t know if I am right but it would be $99 for the SGS3 on the web + $200 termination fee..
that is it??
Thanks!
Reckon the termination fee would be a lot more expensive than that.
You can get a second hand one for about 350 anyway
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
There's no way that'll work out others would be purchasing all their phones that way. Check their terms of termination first.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Terms of termination usually say you have to pay every bill within your fixed term. So if you're on a £34/month 24 month contract you have to pay it all up front when you terminate.

u cant just cancel when you want. If it s monthly term you will have to pay for the full period, e.g if you sign up for a 24 month £25/month contract and immediately cancel you will have to pay around £900 in total.
On occasion they will let you reduce your contract toward the end of the term or will waver the extra termination fees but you are always going to have to pay the monthly fees regardless of whether you have made calls or not.
Alternatively try building you're own SGS3 out of some old cornflake boxes and sea shells, it can be done, you will just need a special machine which enables the rearrangement of atoms on a quantum level

LOOL No mate people already thought about that they have it covered, You will end up paying the 200 ONLY for the contract termination fee then you have to pay for the mobile handset which is extra fee BELEIVE me you will be out of pocket $200 More then buying the phone outright from the shop. Say the phone is $600 You will end up paying $900.
I already looked into that they are tricky and if you dont pay, Your name gets ruined. Everytime you want to get a loan, house, mobile contract, anything with a credit check. = FAIL

Maybe so but they still ain't going to have a lame arse temination policy of $200 dollars considering that its a $600 dollar phone are they!!! If they did then ever mother and his brother would have done this, properly 50 times over and then sell on the phones via the bay for a profit..
Regardless of being us or uk - as suggested the OP should read and double check the termination policy... at best guess if it is a $200 fee then it would be on condition of the phone being returned as in new condition or charged for the phone cost on top

Is $200 to cheap for this device.

Condition pending ...
If the device has been "fully and properly" returned to stock software, and is in excellent cosmetic condition...
Then $200 may be a bit low..
But if you sell it rooted ....and it has a few scratches or marks on the bezels or screen, then $200 is fair.
Of course, it really comes down to the right buyer, and what they are willing to pay.
And for the record, I am an advocate of honest dealing between buyer and seller.
Nothing makes a person more upset than buying blind, and having their trust betrayed...
So if any issues exist with the device, disclose them up front ...IMHO ....g
Appreciate the advice and i believe in the same. ill ask the buyer what they want rooted or not. and I'd return it to stock. Also I'm throwing in 2 cases and a spare extended battery.

$200 is on the low end for a one in great condition.
You'll know if its too low if you get a lot of hits for it (Craigslist) and people want to buy it immediately.
Why go through the extra steps of rooting it? To me that makes the phone look like its been run through the ringer...

I would think thats a good price , BUT.. it's 2 weeks before Christmas....
People need their dough for other holiday giving.
It's going to sell when the right prospect sees it...
Youde probally have better luck getting more money if you wait till after the holidays..
when folks are ready to spend money$ on them selves..
IMHO.. good luck
yes, yes it is.to low.. but its market sell value.. here in bc canada 300$ is the bottom price.. but no one is buying when you can sign up for a 3 year and get a new note 2 for 200$

True, but its hard to get that price locally when people will constantly compare your price to the latest phone.
What i heard once; S4 is coming out so you should drop the price on your S2.
made me chuckle

On a positive note the S3 goes for around $400-$450 online so you could work your way up.
If you still have it I'll trade you my one x that's in my signature.

How much? Will it have a bad ESN? I want to get one so I can actually test Carbon on it. Someone donated one to me but it was already locked. So maybe I can swap screens and enjoy carbon on it
Sent from my LG-VS980 using xda app-developers app
You would just have to swap the board and I can guarantee it will have a clean ESN I would take 100 shipped pm me if your interested

Verizon has started open enrollment for warranty coverage again. So $10 bucks sounds like a great deal for a new phone and stick the old in a box.
Good luck!

Don't let them fool you lol $10 a month then $99 deductible..not worth it to me..I think the best repair/warranty service offered is by BestBuy.. No deductible..I forget how much a month.. But no ?'s asked when needing a replacement

Are they offering open enrollement for phones not purchased at BestBuy?
Verizon is and $110 would be the cheapest way to get a new phone replacement.
I bought my Note 2 on ebay last year for $200 and cracked my screen with no warrenty.. called Verizon they have open enrollement right now. Only question I was asked was whats wrong with the phone?"screens cracked" New one in the mail next day..cancel the insurance afterwards if you think it's a rip there's no contract on insurance.
I've never dealt with BestBuy so maybe they can fix it right now cheaper then $110

No they wouldn't fix it now that it is broken..but I do believe they offer insurance on phones..but a: they either have to purchased there or b: you take it in and they (geek squad) exams the condition of the phone and then decides from there

I have a question regarding open enrollment for Verizon insurance.. I cracked my screen on 2 separate note 2's and apparently asurion dropped me months ago. Now I came across this thread and was curious as to if the open enrollment is indeed factual. Any idea? Thanks a lot

@tennisjunkie I used this open enrollment insurance about 1 month ago.. He said it was ending in March or April. Call ASAP and I'm curious to know when it ends myself.
Good luck
Just called Verizon warranty and they said it ended on March 17th. He said they will have it again in the future, he wasn't sure when. Good luck maybe try mobiletechvideos.com to fix it.
Thank you for checking. That is a bummer. I tried fixing one and it was a disaster. Any other options or insurance?? Or am I soL?

I suggested previously send it to mobiletechvideos.com I haven't used them but there highly trusted by people on XDA for there work and have a clean professional website with fees posted.
Mobiletech does great work. Honestly you can get led combos off of eBay for like 130 and it's super easy to change yourself.

This. I bought the full assembly (AMOLED+Digitizer+Metal Frame) from this guy:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191076189569
And followed this tutorial (there were some small differences since he used a Global N2):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT-2zrZ_aNo
With some patience and a mini-screwdriver I was able to bring a Note II to like new condition. If you get the full assembly with the frame you should be able to restore the phone to near factory state. I definitely wouldn't try replacing just the glass, or even glass+digitizer without the frame, there's too much risk and you're never going to be able to get the adhesive just right.
@funnyperson1 I thought you had a cheap fix for people with cracked screens it's the same price to have a professional do it lol
Heck... I seen a sweet looking mint VZW SCH-1605 - stuck in a simple bootloop on ebay sell for $150 today free shipping
Sadly there is no cheap way on the note 2. I mean if you wanna risk doing just the glass and curing loca glue then yea.

roflcopterssoisoi is right, there isn't really a good cheap alternative for the Note 2.
You can replace just the glass and reglue yourself for $30, but it's risky and probably won't come out right (at least I know it won't if I do it).
You can get a professional to replace just the glass for around $125 (that's what MobileTechVideos charges)
For around $80-123 you can replace the lcd, digitizer, and glass but that still requires melting adhesive, prying, and hoping you don't mess up.
For between $120-150 you can get lcd, digitizer, and frame and replace the components yourself. This is what I did and it was pretty easy, hard to mess up.
For $200+ you can have Samsung, MobileTech or someone else replace the screen for you.
For me the decision was easy because the digitizer and amoled were completely dead, otherwise the MobileTechVideo repair for $125 is appealing. Still, for a couple bucks extra and an hour of my time I like the idea of having a like new, non-damaged assembly.
Yes almost all the options are expensive, but a working Note 2 goes for $300+ on Swappa and eBay. If you repair it and resell it, you'll probably get your money back. You could probably repair it, use it until the Note4 is released and still get your repair money back.
If you had another phone to use you could even sell the parts for a cracked Note2 for more than $200 total. The motherboard is going for $150-180 on eBay, selling the cracked screen and other parts may add up to $100+. You could certainly get enough to buy the bootloop N2 and fix it via Odin.
